- [Narrator] One chilly autumn afternoon,

Little Nutbrown Hare wandered happily through the meadow

with his father.

As he looked around, questions kept popping into his head.

[birds chirping]

- Why are all the birds flying the same way?

- Winter's coming soon so they fly south to where it's warm.

- Oh, and why do the trees lose their leaves?

Oh, look.

- So they can rest and be ready to grow more leaves

and fruit and nuts the next summer.

There's a reason for everything.

- A reason for everything.

Yes, there is.

What a beautiful tree!

- [Big Nutbrown Hare] And so tall.

- It's lost a lot of leaves!

[panting]

[giggling]

Leaves, leaves, everywhere!

- And a very cosy bed they make too.

Why don't you see if you can find some unusual ones?

- Okay.

[gasping]

Look at this yellow one Big Nutbrown Hare.

- That's great.

- Oh! Brown and crunchy.

[gasping]

Oh!

A little creature?

Big Nutbrown Hare!

[snoring]

[giggling]

He's having a snooze.

Hello, little, green, hairy creature.

- [Little Field Mouse] Hello!

[gasping]

[giggling]

- Tada!

It's me, Little Field Mouse!

And that's not a little, green, hairy creature!

- How do you know?

- It's not a creature because it doesn't have any legs!

- Some creatures don't have legs.

Like worms.

- Well, it doesn't have eyes or a mouth either.

I think it's a something, not a someone.

It's a...

- You don't know either?

- No.

- If it's a something, then I wonder what it's for.

There must be a reason it's here.

[panting]

[gasping] Let's ask Little Redwood Fox!

- Great idea!

[panting]

- Oh, looks lovely and scratchy.

I think it might be a special thing

Little Redwood Foxes use to scratch their backs!

- A back scratcher?

- Yes, why don't we try it out?

- Like this?

[giggling]

- That's good but just up a bit.

A little bit harder.

Oh, it works.

- Oh, I wonder if it wouldwork for Little Nutbrown Hares?

- I don't think so [giggling]

- Is it really a back scratcher?

[laughing]

- I don't know but can you keep doing it?

- I don't think it's a back scratcher at all!

Whoa! [giggling]

I think it's for making Little Field Mice taller! [giggling]

See how tall I am! [giggling]

Oh, it's very tickly on my feet [laughing]

[laughing]

Whoa!

- Are you okay Little Field Mouse?

- I'm okay but where's our little, green, hairy thing?

- It is down there, near that rock.

[panting]

- Wow, look!

There's something inside it!

- [Everybody] Wow!

- [Little Nutbrown Hare] And it comes right out.

- Mm, it smells nice.

- It's very shiny.

- And hard.

- How did such a lovely, brown, shiny thing

come to be in such a green, hairy case?

- Maybe there's something inside it!

- Huh.

- Or maybe not.

- But there must be a reason

it doesn't need its green, hairy case anymore.

- Big Nutbrown Hare knows lots of things.

Maybe he'll know!

- Of course!

Let's go.

- Could I have a turn please?

- Sure!

[giggling]

- Could I have a turn too?

- Catch!

- Got it!

- Me next!

Got it [giggling]

- Throw it up high for me to catch.

That might have been just a little too high.

- Where is it?

- I've got it.

- No, me, I've got it.

[laughing]

- Oh no!

- Quick!

- After it!

Maybe our little, brown, shiny thing is meant for chasing!

[laughing]

- [Everybody] Oh no!

- How will we ever find it again

under all these leaves?

[giggling]

- I thought I heard you.

Hello everyone!

- Hello, Little Grey Squirrel.

- We've lost our little, brown, shiny thing

somewhere under all these leaves!

- Oh.

Little, brown, shiny thing?

- Yes, about this big, hard, smooth.

- And brown.

- Let me see.

Ah!

Is this what you mean?

- Woo-hoo!! - Fantastic! [giggling]

- Yes, that's it.

[giggling]

- Or is this it?

- [Everybody] Huh?

- There's two little, brown, shiny things?

- Not two.

A lot!

They're called chestnuts.

- Chestnuts!

What are chestnuts?

- Nuts that are a little bit like seeds.

Little Grey Squirrels love to eat them! [munching]

- They grow right here, on the ground?

- No, they grow up there.

- [Everybody] Oh!

- Look, they're all in green, hairy cases.

- Yes.

- Oh!

Oh, look!

A little, brown, shiny thing!

- The cases protect the nuts

until they are ripe and ready to eat.

- And then what happens?

- Little Grey Squirrels collectthem to keep for winter.

- Can we help you collect some?

- We're good at collecting!

- I would love some help!

- [Narrator] And so the friendsspent the rest of the day

gathering chestnuts for Little Grey Squirrel.

[giggling]

Green hairy ones and brown shiny ones.

- Oh, Big Nutbrown Hare is awake.

- Hello!

Did you find lots of leaves?

- I've got something, but not leaves.

- Not leaves?

- Look!

It's a chestnut.

- I see it is!

- Chestnuts are for playing with.

- Standing on.

- Scratching backs.

- And eating.

- And there's something else they're for.

- You mean this huge, big tree

grew from one little chestnut?

- [Big Nutbrown Hare] Right.

- [Everybody] Wow!

- We could plant a chestnut if you like

and one day it will grow into a big, tall tree too.

- Yes, please! - Hurray!

- Oh, yes!

Let's plant a chestnut.

- [Everybody] Yay!

- It will grow tall.

- And strong.

- And leafy.

- With lots and lots of delicious chestnuts!

[laughing]

- But why do chestnuts grow into big chestnut trees?

- To keep the meadow growing.

And that is the reason for most things.

So that the meadow will live on.

- Oh!

Guess how much I love you.

- Hmm, as much as all the chestnuts you found today?

- No, I love you as much as all the chestnuts

that grow on the tallest chestnut tree.

- Well, that is a lot of chestnuts!

- [Little Nutbrown Hare] Yes, it is.
