- [Little Nutbrowm Hare] Pumpkin Patch.

- [Narrator] One Autumn morning, Little Nutbrown Hare,

Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse,

sat bazed in the early morning light,

fascinated by one of Little White Owl's stories.

- The friends heard the strange sound again.

- Was it like this? [growling]

- Ooh! Yes, yes.

It was just like that.

[giggles]

- Then, through the bushes came a lumbering creature.

- Ooh! Was it bigger than me?

- Much bigger!

- With huge sharp teeth!

[roars]

[giggles]

- Through the bushes came an extra big creature

with huge sharp teeth, and it was lumbering.

- Lumbering?

I can lumber!

Ready? Watch!

[soft music]

[leaves rustling]

[roars]

[laughs]

- Everyone was frightened. [Little Field Mouse roars]

They'd never seen a creature like this before.

The oldest and the bravest of the friends stepped forward

to face the creature.

- Ooh...

[roars]

- Ooh, what do you want here,

extra big lumbering creature?

- Ooh. Nothing happened to the oldest,

bravest one, did it?

- [laughs] No. Of course not.

- Phew!

- The extra big lumbering creature

[roars] might have looked scary,

but he was really a very friendly creature.

He was just lost, and only wanted to know the way home.

- Ooh.

And did they tell him?

- Yes. Straight away.

- I'm the extra big creature - Ooh! Ooh.

- with huge sharp teeth,

lumbered off home.

[leaves rustling]

- And they all lived happily ever after.

- Hooray! - Hooray!

- Is that a true story, Little White Owl?

- Well, it is true that it is my story.

- What a great story!

But, time for us to go now.

- Aah. really?

- You know Little White Owl sleeps during the day.

And besides I have something to show you

that I'm sure neither of you have ever seen before.

Come on.

- Ooh! Goodbye! - Goodbye, Little White Owl.

[yawns]

[Big Nutbrown humming]

- Where are you taking us?

- Oh, that would be telling,

and where's the fun in that?

You'll just have to wait 'till we get there.

- Mmm!

- Maybe we're going to meet the creature

in Little White Owl's story.

So we can see what it really looks like.

- That creature wasn't real.

- But we can pretend, can't we?

I think the creature would have looked like this! [roars]

[giggles]

- No, much more horrible, like this! [grunts]

[pants]

- Maybe scary-looking ears too!

- [laughs] More like funny-looking ears.

- [laughs] Come on now, we're nearly there.

Here we are!

- Ooh! Giant orange things!

- Wow!

- [chuckles] They're called pumpkins.

- Ooh! Pumpkins.

[giggles]

- They look like giant heads! [giggles]

Imagine the size of the body if it had a head this big.

- Enormous!

I think Little White Owl's creature was that big.

- The best thing about pumpkins is, aah!

They're tasty!

Just take a bite.

Like this! [bites]

Mmm!

- Ooh. [bites and chews loudly]

Mmm!

- Mmm!

- [bites] Mmm! Delicious!

- Hey! Look what we did!

- Woow!

- [Little Nutbrown Hare] We made a face!

- [Big Nutbrown] Eyes and a mouth.

- If this is the creature's face,

I think it should be scarier!

- Let's give it some sharp teeth.

[giggles] - And what about scary ears?

[laughs]

- Now that looks like a scary creature.

[grunts] [Big Nutbrown laughs]

- [Big Nutbrown] It certainly does.

[distant grunting]

- I'm not sure that sound is scary enough

for a two headed creature.

- That wasn't me.

[distant grunting] - Hmm? [gasps] Look!

[leaves rustling] [creature grunting]

- Oh. Don't worry.

I'm sure it's just a creature from the meadow.

[creature grunting]

- I think it's lumbering.

[creature grunting]

- Lumbering. [whimpers]

Definitely, lumbering!

- [Creature] [struggles] Aah! [struggles] Aah!

- Wow! - Wow

- The scary creature! - It's the scary creature!

- Oh, What scary creature!? Where!?

- [laughs] They thought you - Ahh!

were a creature. - Ahh

No, sorry, just a Little Gray Squirrel with a bushy tail,

storing some pine nuts for the winter [grunts].

- Ooh.

- I knew it all the time.

Besides, squirrels aren't scary.

[grunts]

- [Little Gray Squirrel] Little Field Mouse?

- Yes!

- Boo! [squeals]

- [laughs] Little Gray Squirrels can be a bit scary

when they want to be.

Bye!

- [chuckles] Goodbye scary Little Gray Squirrel creature.

- Still not scared.

[laugh]

- Ooh, look! Here's a pumpkin small enough to roll home.

We can have more pumpkin to eat tomorrow!

[grunts]

[Blue Jay squeaking]

- [gasps] Did you hear that?

- It's probably Little Gray Squirrel trying

to scare us again.

[Blue Jay squeaking]

- Mmm! That's not a sound a squirrel can make.

- Ooh?

[Blue Jay squeaking]

- Mmm.

- Look, it's left a footprint.

- With three toes!

- Look at how small the footprint is.

Oh, whatever it is, it can't be very big.

- It might be very, very big,

but it just has very, very small feet!

- And two heads!

- [giggles] There is no such thing

as a creature with two heads.

[laughs] There'll be a perfectly ordinary explanation

for the noises.

Let's go and find out.

[Blue Jay squeaking]

- Ooh! Ohh! Wait for me!

[Blue Jay squeaking]

- Look!

There's your creature!

- Wow!

[squeaking]

- It's a Blue Jay.

[squeaking]

- It's so pretty.

- I knew there was an explanation for the sounds.

Blue Jays sometimes make sounds they've heard

other creatures make.

[squeaking] - Ooh

[squeaks]

- Ooh! There's two of them!

- A real creature you've never seen before.

And nothing to be scared of.

- Oh, I wasn't scared.

[squeals] - Ooh.

- Owh!

- Oh! [laughing]

- [Narrator] The day was over

and the Nutbrown Hares were nearly home.

They'd had a wonderful adventure,

but there was something Little Nutbrown Hare wanted

to tell his father.

- Big Nutbrown Hare?

- Hmm?

- Even though Little Field Mouse said she wasn't scared,

I think she was.

- [chuckles] I think she was, too.

- And so was I.

- Well that's alright.

We all get scared sometimes,

especially when there are things we don't understand,

but look how it turned out.

No scary creature, just a couple of beautiful Blue Jays.

- Aah!

I did feel brave when I was holding your hand.

- Ooh, guess how much I love you.

[giggles]

- More than all the creatures in the pumpkin patch?

- No! More than all the creatures in the whole meadow,

real or imagined!

- Hmm. Even the scary ones!

- [chuckles] Even the scary ones.

[growls]

- Well guess how much I love you!

[growls]

- Oh no! Ooh.

It's the giant two headed, - I love you

- Ooh! [giggles]

Three toed, six-eyed creature, - [growls] I love you [growls]

Ooh, lumbering at me.

Oh, save me! [laughs]

[light happy music]

[barks]
