I was feeling a little bit nervous

about the fact that the blind audition is coming up.

Any time something big happens in my life,

I always do a tarot reading beforehand.

So I asked the deck,

how was my blind audition gonna go?

I'm really looking forward to it after that reading.

It gave me a lot of hope

for what's to come.

My name is Ryleigh Modig.

I'm 18 years old,

and I'm from Spencer, Massachusetts.

My dad, Wayne, what a guy.

Hello.

He's a businessman during the day.

Then by night, he comes home, and he puts on like a tank top,

and you can see his, like, sleeve of tattoos,

and he plays his guitar, and we record music.

For as long as I remember,

he would let me come up on stage and sing with him

when he would do gigs.

He's just always been a huge inspiration,

and performing with my dad on stage

had an impact on the fact that that's what I want to do

for the rest of my life.

Growing up,

I feel like music was a really good outlet for me.

Being gay and knowing that I was different,

I've struggled with anxiety and depression.

After I came out, I lost a lot of friends.

Everybody turning against you,

the things that people are saying about you ‐‐

obviously, that is awful for your mental health.

But I feel like the biggest battle for me

was definitely trying to love myself

and accept myself for who I am.

"When the Party's Over" by Billie Eilish.

This song means the world to me

because it's about not wanting

to lie about how you feel about things,

and I feel like I shouldn't have to lie about who I am

and I shouldn't have to lie about who I love.

Billie Eilish is so comfortable in her own skin,

and it just inspired me.

I was like, "Why can't I just be like that?"

I just went with it.

I shaved my head. I started going to concerts.

I made new friends.

I wanted to be me so people could see

that there's nothing to be afraid of.

It was awful seeing her struggle,

but she shaved her head and found herself.

And it's been amazing ever since.

To see her on "The Voice,"

being the person that she wants to be,

it's been an amazing journey for her, I think,

and we're ‐‐ we're very proud of her.

My family is so supportive.

They just love me for who I am.

I am forever grateful

for everything that you've done for me.

We love you. Love you.

If I could tell my younger self one thing,

it would just be to live your truth

because there's light at the end of the tunnel.

about the performance that were not perfect.

One thing I know how to do is coach nerves.

And the other person that turned their chair

has said many times

that she has trouble coaching nerves.

Each day I show up on set to this show,

I'm incredibly nervous, so when it comes to nerves,

I think, you know, it could be a natural fit. That was good.

I don't coach nerves well.

But you didn't come across as nervous.

What you came across ‐‐ and I do relate to ‐‐

is you get lost in it.

You start singing... Yeah.

...and it's almost like you are the character

in that movie that you are singing about,

and I do that all the time.

I cry very easily. Everyone knows.

since the very beginning of the show.

Yeah, Blake! Did you have anything to do with that?

Conversations with John Legend are mind‐numbingly boring.

What do you think of the artists that you've seen so far?

The talent is incredible. I love the team I'm building.

Everybody is literally from a different genre right now.

John, I have noticed you have your little

mini keyboard there. I do!

I'm trying to erase the nightmare

that was the rubber hand from my memory. Never.

In my life,

even when I was a full‐time musician,

I've always had some type of trade

or some type of career.

I worked in accounting.

I was a truck driver.

And not any kind of trucks.

I drive tanks.

I'm flying this bad boy.

I was a flight attendant for like two whole weeks.

A voiceover artist.

But I'm a mother first.

So being a starving artist was never an option for me.

I'm Pia Renee. I'm 37 years young.

At 15, I found out I was pregnant.

Me being so young

and walking down the streets of my neighborhood,

and my belly's getting big,

I felt ashamed,

and I had to deal with all of those emotions.

I had to grow up fast, paying bills on time,

going to work, going to daycare.

I learned a lot of things by trial and error,

mostly error.

I didn't see not graduating high school as an option,

and I graduated on time.

I went to college to learn music.

My two kids were right there with me.

We were sitting down, doing our homework together.

In my 20s, I was in a reggae band,

and reggae has been a big, big part

of my development as an artist.

Whether I was in college learning music,

a full‐time musician,

or a corporate professional

doing music on the side,

it's always been a part of my children's lives.

Growing up with a mom who sings,

it's not the "regular," like, job that most moms have,

but being a single mom,

she always did a really great job

with providing everything.

It was very important to me

for my children to have a solid mama.

I want them to know, whatever I got

to bulldoze through, I got you.

Love you, little baby. Love you, too.

Being on "The Voice" is a bright moment for me.

I have been a creative most of my life,

and I'm excited to see

who my voice and style resonates with.

As a songwriter, as a singer, as a musician,

this is huge.

I've done R&B, soul, but reggae has my heart.

I heard a little Rahsaan Patterson in you too.

My name is Andrew Marshall.

I am 21 years old,

from Boxford, Massachusetts.

I've been singing ever since I was in elementary school.

Me and one of my sisters started doing theater together.

I want to make people smile or feel something.

We really didn't know he could sing

until he was in his middle school show.

His voice at that young age was phenomenal ‐‐

we thought, of course.

We're his parents.

I remember looking, and I go, "Who's this kid?"

We were kind of blown away.

Junior year, I go to chorus, and the people are like,

"Yeah, Andrew, your eyes are yellow."

I'm like, "What?"

And so I, like, take a picture of it,

and I send it to my mom 'cause my mom's a nurse,

and she's like, "That's weird."

My parents picked me up. We go to Mass General.

And I started a couple days of testing.

Day three comes around, and all the doctors are like,

"I don't know what to do. I think that you're fine."

Then this one doctor, she was like,

"I would feel a little bit more comfortable

if we just did one more test."

We knew it was a leukemia test.

She came in, and she said, "Let me grab a chair."

And from there, you just knew.

I remember just kind of sitting in the bed

and just being frozen for a while.

He just ‐‐ Obviously, as a 16‐year‐old boy,

felt like, you know, "Who pulled the rug out

from underneath my life?"

And together, we, as a family,

tried to really be there and support him

and laugh when he laughed, cried when he cried.

I guess that's all we did.

Three‐and‐a‐half years of treatment

really messed me up.

Music got me through it,

knowing that, one day, I'm gonna be back on the stage

in some capacity.

I remember we had a phone call from the doctor

and yelling at Andrew, I go, "You're in remission."

He didn't let this disease define him.

When you get diagnosed, you're so blurred.

That's why you have your parents there.

You know, it definitely brought us closer.

I mean, my parents are my best friends.

Like, I love them to pieces, you know?

Oh, Andrew.

Yeah, I just really appreciate them, so...

But I don't ‐‐ I don't tell them that enough, you know.

We're so proud of you.

Your strength is inspiring.

For my blind audition,

I will be singing "Gravity" by John Mayer.

You know, when I was sick, I listened to his music,

and that was the music that got me through.

My Make‐A‐Wish was to meet John Mayer,

and it was one of the most

validating experiences of my life.

Going through leukemia has strengthened me in so many ways

that I wouldn't have even expected.

It allows me to keep

pushing forward when life gets harder.

And I know that there's light on the other side.

Everyone's smiling when the person walked up.

They seem so happy.

He must have a dog with him.

My name's Emma Caroline.

I'm 25 years old,

and I'm from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Tuscaloosa is

a big college football town.

I went to the University of Alabama.

Every Saturday during football season,

you're glued to the TV or on the quad.

I think if I wouldn't have gone to the University of Alabama,

my dad would disown me.

This is just a tremendous blessing

and a tremendous opportunity.

As a parent, you always think your child is talented.

Emma genuinely has a gift, and she's unique.

My dad is a military helicopter pilot,

and he was deployed when I was in third grade.

And since then, he's been in Afghanistan,

Saudi Arabia, and other places.

It was pretty difficult growing up without him there,

just because we're super close.

But it pushed me into writing songs.

About a year ago, my dad was actually training

in, like, another state for, like, a couple days,

and he was supposed to go directly back to Afghanistan,

and he had told me he was getting on the plane.

But I made it home, surprised her when I came home.

No way!

I'll never be able to forget.

That look was the most precious thing.

I'm very excited because my dad

will be able to watch my audition,

and that just makes it even more special.

With him being gone, he never really got to come

to any shows or anything,

so he's really going to hear me

sing my heart out for the first time.

I'm the only one with the block now. Yeah.

on the island of Oahu.

The beaches are beautiful around the island,

but I feel like, Waianae,

there's something special about it.

Like, it's so pretty,

and it's really good to go hang out and relax.

I am 20 years old.

I am originally from Waianae, Hawaii,

but now residing in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Vegas is known for amazing casinos, their Strip,

but many don't realize that

they call Las Vegas the Ninth Island

because a lot of Hawaii people come here.

It's cheaper. That's why.

In Hawaii, for us singers,

there's really not many opportunities.

We're stuck on an island. It's very small.

This is the first time we lived on the mainland.

Part of why we moved here is to give her

that opportunity, that dream.

She's been wanting to do this her whole life.

When I was 8 years old,

my mom posted a cover

of me singing "If I Were A Boy,"

and it just went viral.

I had the chance to perform at the Staples Center

and sing the National Anthem for a basketball game.

to be able to do that from Hawaii.

Right now, it is hard for me to perform in Las Vegas.

My name is Halley Greg. I'm 29 years old,

and I'm from Seattle, Washington.

The universe is massive.

For the past couple of years,

I was teaching science to high‐schoolers,

but I have been a science teacher by day

and a singer/songwriter by night.

I was exhausted leading this double life.

I would spend 9 to 11 hours working on teaching,

and then head to whatever was happening

in the music scene that night.

Performing in the Seattle music scene,

I really fell in love with the thrill

of being on stage and being a part of a band

and making music with other people.

And it inspired me to start writing my own music

and performing as a soloist, so I was like,

"Okay, I'm gonna take a year off to focus more on music."

January 2020,

I submitted my letter of resignation to my principal.

All this momentum that I had going was just gone.

So I feel so incredibly grateful

I'm Durell Anthony.

I am 34, and I live in San Diego.

Ah!

I have two little kids,

and I get to spend a lot of time with them during the day...

Night‐night! ...'cause, as a musician,

I work mainly at night ‐‐

gigs and ‐‐ and sessions and stuff.

I started singing in church with my sister

and started taking piano lessons with the nuns

down at the convent with the pointy pencil,

you know, smacking the paper and all that.

Growing up, I was a chubby kid, and once I got to high school,

I stopped playing sports and I was just about music

and trying not to fail math.

And, um, that's when, like, the weight really shot up.

The weight definitely impacted my self‐confidence

and just feeling like I didn't belong on the stage.

It was just hard.

So at college, I just finally decided,

like, "Man, I got to do something about this."

And I started walking.

That led to just eating a little healthier,

and then it just started coming off.

I met my wife, Kim, at weight‐loss camp.

We were both counselors and trainers,

and we've been together ever since.

And she is ‐‐ She's my biggest supporter.

She's the reason why I'm here.

He's always singing, always practicing.

Music is just such a part of him, and...

He definitely helps so much with the kids,

When you were putting the keyboard down and we weren't

ever hearing that song again,

but now it's back in your lap again.

It's back, and it's stuck in your head.

My God. I'm starting to hate this job.

My name is Jesse Desorcy.

I'm 29 years old, from Burrillville, Rhode Island.

Wow.

I grew up in a woodsy lake town,

so I was always outside swimming or running around.

After high school, I joined the Coast Guard

because it seemed to be a great fit for me.

I grew up around water. I love water.

We were actually ramping up to go to Guantanamo Bay

when my whole plan turned upside down.

I was actually driving home, and I was going

to read a road sign, and I look up,

you know, trying to read and I‐I couldn't read the sign.

I was diagnosed with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

It's a very rare genetic mutation

that affects your optic nerve.

You know, in the beginning, you don't really notice it

because it's a tiny little blind spot.

That blind spot expands,

so you're left with little to no central vision at all.

I can see my hand here if I'm looking straight,

and then I move it in, it slowly disappears.

I ‐‐ I can't even see my fingers wiggling right now.

It's classified as legally blind.

I tried not to get too down,

but for me, it was ‐‐ it was overwhelming.

I found myself just doing nothing all of a sudden

and going from a really busy life at 21 years old

to not knowing what you're gonna do for the rest of your life.

I started playing guitar more,

and I started trying to sing for the first time, really.

I ended up putting a band together

just from guys I met.

We were lucky enough to gain the opportunity to open up

for Big & Rich, Jo Dee Messina, and Frankie Ballard.

It was crazy, and I can credit my confidence

probably to the fact that I couldn't see

the thousands of people there.

The way that Jesse has handled his blindness

and everything he's lost,

it's amazing the way that he has moved on.

I believe I'm at "The Voice" because I want ‐‐

I want to do more.

Doing music full time, it's like I'm just drawn to it.

It's like a calling to me.

I couldn't think of anything else I'd rather do.

I'd get so excited that I'd go straight downstairs

and pick up my guitar and start playing, you know?

My grandpa, he was in a bluegrass band.

But my dad is the number‐one music inspiration for me.

When I was little, I'd watch him play

with his two cousins in Nashville,

and they had a song on the country charts.

So then I went that way, and I ended up loving it.

I perform mainly at coffee shops,

a couple bars, and the senior center.

I feel like all the old women love me.

They always say, "You look like a young Elvis,"

or "I love your eyelashes."

Made me feel like a superstar.

The younger girls, they never say that.

Performing in the local senior center,

that's my biggest audience of a live show I've ever done.

It's been a while. I need a win here.

The storyteller vibe,

that was the coolest part for me.

I have an inkling, but I will tell you,

I have won this show with a male country singer.

I've had hits in country music,

and I'm not gonna know everything down there

that the cowboy is gonna know,

but I did grow up on country music.

a concrete understanding of country music

because you can't know where it's going

unless you know where it came from.

I actually started off singing pop

because my voice was too high when I was little,

and about sophomore year in high school,

it started growing a little bit.

My granddad and my dad, they both did country music.

I've always loved country music.

That's just kind of where I'm at now.

Started from pop, now I'm at country, so ‐‐

Wow, so you're saying maybe a coach

that's lived in pop and in country

might be a great coach for you ‐‐ just saying.

Just saying. Or Texas who now lives in Hollywood.

As a songwriter, I reference songs

that have been inspiring to me,

and a lot of times, it's country music,

and I've been fortunate enough to work with now

Thomas Rhett, Dan + Shay, Shania Twain.

And who knows, maybe we'll be able to write together someday

and write some country music or pop music,

whatever you want to do, because I don't think it matters

where you're from, if you're Hollywood or not,

or if you're pop or country or soul.

Whatever the genre is, it's music at the end of the day.

You do you, man. I'll support you every step of the way.

That's what it should be about as a coach.

Avery, I know I'm not the obvious choice

for a country artist.

I turned for you before any of the other coaches

because I heard a beautiful, beautiful voice.
