I think he might've been a stalker.

I speak to dead people, and they speak to me.

He will kill you. He has killed people.

But there's only one way to know if my findings are real...

They're being possessed.

So I'm up here in wakefield, massachusetts.

It's about 20 minutes north of boston.

I got a call from a young mom named alyssa.

Now, she moved her family into a duplex

To help take care of her 86-year-old grandmother,

But the activity is so bad there,

She doesn't think anyone is safe.

She's in a pretty tough bind and desperate for us to help.

Amy: I don't like it here.

♪♪

I feel dying and death over here,

So I don't know if a living person is currently dying here

Or if somebody just died here.

♪♪

Maybe a female -- I'm thinking an older female.

My guess is not good.

♪♪

Steve: So, alyssa, when we spoke on the phone,

It sounded like you were at the end of your rope.

The paranormal activity here in the house

Is just out of control.

I'm scared for me and my family.

I'm afraid I'm going to die.

How long have you been here?

It's my grandmother's house.

I've lived here off and on, though, my whole life,

But I've been back here permanently

The last three years.

I came back to take care

Of my grandmother and my grandfather,

But he passed away.

How long ago? A couple years.

Do you think whatever is in the house

Might have had anything at all to do with that?

I do. I definitely do.

I know even before, when he was getting sick,

He seemed very depressed and not present.

All right. So who all lives in the house?

It is me, my husband, cory;

Our daughter, kenzie;

And then my grandmother, rose, lives on the other side.

How old is kenzie? 3.

Give me an idea of what kind of experiences

You guys are having here.

Things moving on their own, hearing voices,

Shadow people, physical attacks,

And my health has been declining rapidly.

What are we talking about?

I'll wake up in the morning

And feel like I ran a marathon and hadn't slept a wink.

I'm having heart issues.

I've been on a holter monitor,

And it's been just since I moved in here.

I'm afraid that I'm going to be here

With my 3-year-old,

And I'm going to fall over dead.

But you think that's being caused by the paranormal?

It has to be.

I've had so many tests done.

They can't find anything wrong.

I got to ask you, why don't you just leave?

I can't leave my grandmother here

To deal with this alone,

And I don't think my grandmother will leave.

I'm hoping we can figure out what's here

I'm seeing a path with a bunch of dead people on it.

If some of the random dead people that are on there

Choose to go off of the path for a little while,

Then it could affect the area.

So I'm seeing this guy.

He's a white male.

I think that he was a farmer.

He has no eyes, and he goes inside from this path.

He makes me feel nauseous, very specific,

Like I'm going to throw up.

He's very clingy, very needy, very physical.

He's so physical, he actually reached out and grabbed my arm.

All right. So what's going on down here?

I've been physically attacked down here.

Okay. Tell me what happened.

I was doing laundry and was pushed.

It felt like strong, like, maybe male hands

Right into my back and pushed me right into the dryer.

Okay, anything else?

Yes, I've seen a huge shadow figure

That looks like a spider,

But it didn't look right.

It didn't look natural.

It was otherworldly.

Okay, so where do you see it?

All over the house, and when I see it,

It'll be in different sizes sometimes.

Sometimes, it's the size of a large dog, like, huge.

Either way, it's a creepy thing to see.

Absolutely.

I'm not a fan of spiders myself. Yeah.

You see anything else strange like that spider thing?

Yes, a really abnormally tall shadow figure.

It looked human in shape.

I feel like it's attached to me.

What do you think this thing wants?

I think it wants to suck the life out of me.

That's what I think.

Amy: This farmer guy is very much present.

He's attached himself to a living person

That he feels good about, who he feels nurtured by,

Likely a female, like, a mother figure.

I think she feels like she's being watched.

I think she feels like something is on her.

Feeling like being touched, being held.

Whoever this woman is is experiencing pain a lot,

Especially with the eyes, probably headaches,

Massive anxiety, fear.

She may stay up because of the anxiety,

So that's what he's putting onto this woman.

All right.

So I got to assume this is where you and your fiancé sleep.

Yes, or where I try to sleep.

What's going on?

A lot of anxiety.

My heart will start racing.

I get sweaty, short of breath.

My vision goes really bright,

And I feel like I'm going to black out.

I've never heard that vision thing described to me before.

Anything else?

Sleep paralysis.

I will wake up from a sound sleep.

I feel like the air is being sucked out of my lungs.

I can't breathe. I can't move.

Sleep paralysis is an actual thing.

Mm-hmm.

So what makes you think it's paranormal?

I never had anything like that happen to me

Before coming here.

This happens to me sometimes every night

Or several times a week.

All right.

Anything else?

I will feel like I'm nauseous.

I'm going to vomit.

Okay.

I get these pains.

I call them phantom pains.

So where on your body are you feeling these pains?

I'll get a pain in this leg.

Okay.

And it will travel, and then it'll be in this leg,

And then it'll go up my arms.

Sometimes, it'll be in my head, as well,

Like, all over my body.

Yeah. Sometimes I think like,

"what could I have possibly done to deserve this?"

Amy: The farmer guy likes the person in this room.

I think he's kind of in love with this woman.

I literally see him, like, sleeping in the bed.

There's been things

That are not really appropriate that he's done.

I don't think she understands that this is the one

Who is giving her all this physical pain.

And what kind of effect would that have on this living person?

All I can gather is that

It's causing them a lot of, like, physical issues.

I mean, it could become something, you know,

Far more detrimental, you know, like terminal illness.

This is bad.

Steve: Your daughter called us in

Because whatever is here could be deadly.

I mean, do you agree with that at all?

Absolutely agree with that. Okay.

I firmly believe

That this house has breeded illness

And actually killed my father.

Okay. Now, she alluded to that.

She feels that it's going on again now with her,

And she's worried about your mom.

I think the house is trying to do something to her.

Okay.

Any experiences that you can recall

That you can tell me about?

I would hear voices all the time.

So in those voices you're hearing,

Could it have been anybody in the house?

Definitely not.

They were voices that did not sound like anybody.

Okay, and so anything else?

I would hear all kinds of noises and movement, like,

Down happening from the basement area.

Could it have been any kind of rodent in the walls

Or anything like that?

No, and you'd stand

At the top of the stairs in the kitchen,

And you're hearing this,

And then finally, you open the door,

And you're like, "stop."

And it would just get silent.

Really? Yeah.

Interesting.

Amy: I'm seeing this monster.

It's evil, looks like a spider, very low to the ground.

I'm seeing it goes right up the wall

And sinks flat into the wall.

It likes to bother people.

The living are hearing this weird tapping,

And the living have experienced voice borrowing.

So this thing, this weird creature,

Puts thoughts into the living.

So, ann, are there any other experiences

You can tell me about?

I was in bed, and all of a sudden,

There was this black swirling mass

That started up around the ceiling.

And it just got bigger and bigger

And darker and darker,

And it just kind of started coming down towards the bed.

And it just kind of went...

Up like that and just went back to the ceiling

And just went away.

There was no smoke or any kind of fire in the house,

Nothing like that? Absolutely not.

Any thoughts on what the hell that weird thing might have been?

Evil -- it felt really evil.

You seem to have a lot at stake here.

I mean, you got your mom,

Your daughter, your granddaughter.

Mm-hmm.

So what do you want them to do?

Personally, I think they should just get out.

My mother needs to realize

She needs to get out of here, too.

I almost feel like

The house has somehow got control of her.

Amy: The spider creature likes it down here.

So this creature thing,

Which I totally thought was not human -- it is.

It's this old man.

Okay, so this old man has now been transformed into,

Like, an animal thing?

♪♪

Matt: Can you describe it?

Just imagine pipe cleaners bent into the shape of an "m"

With little, like, feet, and its head is black.

It almost looks like an orb and kind of shiny,

And it's kind of floating.

♪♪

He goes after people because he's a bully.

♪♪

He's, like, kind of making me nauseous.

I think the living might become extremely drained from this.

Well, he says, "I want you out of my house."

I think he's dangerous.

♪♪

So, rose, I was talking to alyssa and your daughter.

Mm-hmm.

And they both think it's not safe here

Because of what's going on with the --

Right, right. How do you feel about it?

When my husband was alive, things would happen for us,

But we never worried about them.

We never got frightened.

We just accepted them and never thought anything was wrong.

But you've experienced it yourself?

Oh, yeah, yeah, I've experienced things myself.

Okay, so give me an example.

Sitting in my living room looking towards the stairway,

A shadow appeared there.

Did this shadow look like somebody, or --

Just a big, big blob.

It stayed for a matter of seconds and then moved.

Anything else?

We lost two daughters.

I'm sorry to hear that.

We lost one in 2003 with cancer,

And we lost another one, 2013,

With multiple sclerosis.

So we were in bed,

And I woke up around 2:00 in the morning.

I had one picture.

It's a big, large picture of my two girls

When they were little together.

Okay.

Beside this picture, two flashes of light came in.

So you think those flashes of light were your daughters?

Yes. Wow.

I had a hard time with it because it frightened me.

Okay, so if amy finds something here is dangerous,

Would you consider moving?

My whole life is this house.

Even if I'm wrong,

And something could be really right that could hurt me,

I can't leave.

Not even for your granddaughter?

I mean, she doesn't feel safe here

But doesn't want to leave you behind.

I'm here 37 years, and I can't leave behind

Everything that was my husband's, either,

That we had together.

I can't leave that behind.

Amy: There's, like, death here.

It's just kind of everywhere.

Getting really bad lower-abdominal pains

All the way through my back, my hips.

It feels like I'm being either hit or punched.

I don't understand what's happening.

♪♪

Nobody can feel physically okay in here.

It's impossible.

I would think that the living are feeling constant nausea,

Constantly drained.

I don't know how anybody can live in here.

Death is here so much that there's actually, like,

A little gateway.

So what is this thing?

So you know how people talk about, like, the white light?

That's this. Okay.

And it came because

Death constantly was visiting this area.

Not good for the living, for sure.

Living people would feel vertigo and nausea and things like that.

Like, I'm so drained right now.

I, like, can barely move.

Before I got to town, I asked a local historian

To look into alyssa's property for me.

Now, she says that as soon as the original owners

Set foot on the land,

Family members started dropping dead,

And their terrible luck lasted the entire time they were there.

So on the phone, you mentioned

That the original owners of my client's property

Suffered from a lot of death.

Yeah.

Before we even get to that, who were they,

And when did they get to the property?

Well, see, it was david wiley

Who moved to the property in 1820,

And then he brought his bride, sally.

All right, so, nancy, he gets there in 1820.

How old is he at this time?

He's 21 years old.

Okay, so he's a young man.

Yeah. What does he do for a living?

He was mainly a farmer, and sally, of course,

Was helping him on the farm,

Keeping the house and taking care of the children.

There were eight children.

Okay, so, nancy, let's get to the death and the suffering.

What happened?

In 1824, they lost their infant son, william.

Okay. And then in 1825,

They narrowly avoided being killed in a house fire.

It took down the house and most of their property.

All right. So the house is destroyed.

Did they ever rebuild? Did they stay on the property?

They definitely stayed on the property,

And they did rebuild the house.

Okay.

But the misfortunes didn't stop there.

In fact, in 1839,

Their 9-year-old daughter died.

She had contracted scarlet fever.

Oh.

And then, a real catastrophe for the family,

Just a few years later, david died.

He was 43 years old.

He had contracted consumption,

But trouble wasn't done with them yet.

Okay.

Just a few years later,

Their 7-year-old daughter contracted consumption, too.

Oh.

And she died, and here's her death record.

And then a few months after that,

David's father, eli, also died also of consumption,

And the next one was in 1853.

Little james emerson wiley died, 2 years old.

He was her grandson. Okay.

And then in 1867,

The daughter-in-law died at age 44.

This family couldn't catch a break.

What happens to sally?

In 1874, she would die of a heart condition.

Okay, so if I got this right, nancy,

Sally suffered for 47 years

Of seven family members dying...

Absolutely.

...And her house burning down to the ground

And having to rebuild. Right.

So when you said they suffered

When they got to my client's property,

That's basically an understatement.

Yeah.

Amy: I'm seeing that farmer guy again.

He's got curly, dark-brown hair.

He's wearing an old-fashioned hat.

I put him at 20 to 30 years of age.

Any idea when this was?

Between 1830 and 1860.

[ groans ]

He was married.

There's a strong attachment to the land.

♪♪

There was a cemetery that was shown.

There's seven graves.

One in particular is a dead baby,

And then I see this woman.

Just her hands come out,

And she's gathering these baby bones together.

And she turns to me, and she has no face.

It's all bloody and gore,

And then the last thing was fire, big fire.

Steve: So far, I've got a family living in fear on a property

Where one of the original owners lost seven family members

And their home to a fire,

But I want to see if there's anything else.

As I was searching through old records,

I find a brutal homicide that took place in 1900.

Turns out the victim was murdered

Very close to alyssa's house.

So I asked a local journalist

To look into this homicide for me,

And she says the victim was a guy

Who waited his whole life for his inheritance

Only to get murdered in cold blood

Before he could collect it.

Well, emily, thanks for helping me out with this case.

So this murder that happened near my client's property,

What do we know about the victim?

The victim was a man named john w. Crowell.

Okay.

There's a picture of him,

And he was a coffee and tea salesman.

He was 66 years old when he died.

All right. Now, you mentioned on the phone,

This guy had some money and stuff.

What's he doing selling coffee beans?

He thought he was part of the crowell family

Over in England,

And he thought he was the rightful heir

To part of a $30 million fortune.

John crowell wasn't quiet about it, either.

You know, he would tell his customers along his routes,

You know, that he'd be getting this money soon, and...

So now, when we spoke, you said he got killed

Before he was able to inherit this money.

Yeah, he never saw a penny of any inheritance

Of any type.

What happened was on December 3, 1900,

He went out to the barn,

And while he was out there,

His wife, in the house, heard gunshots ring out.

She immediately rushes out.

As she's rushing out, she can hear john yelling,

"mother, mother, mother."

He says a few more things.

He says, "the guy is gone.

The guy is gone. They got my pocketbook."

She runs into the barn,

And she finds john lying there

On the straw on the floor of the barn.

Okay. He'd been shot twice.

Do we know where?

The stomach and the chest.

We have a death record here.

Okay.

Pistol shot wound, hemorrhage.

All right. So he bled out.

Okay, so now he's dead.

Was anybody charged or arrested?

No.

So it's still an open homicide?

It is to this day.

So this guy is dead. What about this inheritance?

Did the family get any of it?

No, they never saw a penny of it.

It's really questionable if it even existed.

So this poor slob might have got killed

Bragging about a fortune he was never going to get?

Yeah. What a shame.

Amy: That old man who looks like a spider is down here.

Matt: Do you get anything on him in life?

He came from, like, extreme wealth

And a line going back probably to England?

Sense of entitlement, like the world owed him.

He's saying that basically, he stole and robbed people.

He was a very not a good person.

He just wanted money, money, money, money and power.

He was very, very attached to his mother.

He wants to see his mother.

I think he was murdered outside.

So wakefield is practically next door to the city of salem,

And you know what that means -- witch trials.

I'm headed over to meet an author

Who's written a lot about them.

She says some of those witch hunts took place

Right in my client's neighborhood,

And one of the victims was captured right down the road

From alyssa's house.

Steve: So I know a little bit about the witch trials,

But can you give me a little bit of a crash course

And tell me what the hell happened?

By the end of the 1600s,

At a time when people generally thought

That evil magic was a real possibility,

Sometimes, if there was an unexpected death,

It would be assumed that maybe magic

Had something to do with it.

So basically, this hysteria has to do with

People having things go bad for them...

Mm-hmm.

...And then blaming it on the witches. Yes.

How many people were actually accused of it?

There were just under 200

Who were suspected during that time.

I know when we spoke on the phone,

A lot of this witch madness made its way

Toward my client's neighborhood.

What can you tell me about that?

Of the approximately 200 who were suspected in that year,

Six of them lived

About a mile from your client's property.

Okay, so why'd they get accused?

There were four girls in the salem village area

Who had been acting oddly.

They complained of aches and pains,

Which escalated even to convulsions.

The doctors were called in.

They couldn't figure out what was wrong,

And finally, one of them,

Using the medical knowledge of the time,

Thought that if it's nothing obvious,

Then maybe it was witchcraft.

So do we know who these women were?

The first one was a widow, lydia dusten,

Who was arrested on April 30th of 1692.

That's a copy of the arrest warrant,

And two of her daughters,

A granddaughter, and two friends and neighbors

Are also accused and arrested eventually.

Six of the women

That lived near my client's property were arrested.

They're in jail. What happens?

There wasn't a way to prove anybody was a witch,

Which, of course, they weren't to begin with.

Okay.

So they were free to go

Once they paid their room-and-board bills at jail.

Unfortunately, lydia died

Before her family could get the money together.

She winds up dying in prison.

Yes.

That is a sad story.

Yep.

Amy: I don't like this.

There's just death and dying.

It's a [bleep] nightmare.

♪♪

It's draining, and it's adding

To the whole heaviness of this location.

And I'm just seeing, like, bodies going out.

I see bodies going out, at least two bodies

Going out the door in body bags.

[ sighs ] this is awful.

♪♪

I saw several disturbing things on my walk,

But the spider creature tormenting the living

Has me the most concerned.

This thing, he has an orb.

♪♪

The actual orb itself was clear.

Then in the center was, like, this dark, black thing.

♪♪

I do like this scale better, though.

Okay.

Amy, is this what you saw?

Yes, that's what I saw.

Steve: Now that amy and I have completed our investigations,

We're ready to reveal our findings to each other

And our clients for the first time.

So, amy, we've got three generations across from us.

This is rose.

She owns the house.

That's her daughter ann,

And this is her granddaughter alyssa.

Alyssa moved in here with her family three years ago

To take care of rose.

This is her family here.

But ever since she did do that,

Activity has been violent and dangerous.

Now, alyssa is in a serious bind.

If she stays, her daughter is in danger.

If she goes, she's abandoning her grandmother.

When amy is ready, she'll describe her walk for us.

Amy: In the backyard, I encountered a male

Between 20 and 30 years of age.

He has a direct connection to the land.

He had on the old-style kind of farmers hats,

And I thought he was maybe alive around 1830s.

I also saw a cemetery that I felt was here,

And there were seven graves.

There's only one person from that particular cemetery

Who isn't at rest, and it's a female.

I believe her name may have started with an "s,"

But I'm not sure.

So a few things amy said made me think

Of the original owners of the property.

His name was david wiley,

And he bought this land with his wife, sally...

Ah.

...In 1820.

Now, he was 21 years old at the time.

Like a lot of people in the area, he was a farmer.

His wife was a homemaker.

Now, you mentioned seven graves.

Correct.

Between 1824 and 1867,

The wileys lost seven family members

On the property, including david.

Oh.

I figured out that he actually has attached himself

To a female here...

And it's whoever lives upstairs

In the room with the painted furniture.

That's alyssa's room.

Oh.

You might get physically touched.

I did see him, like,

Getting in bed with you and maybe being...

I think he's, like, in love with you a little bit.

[ gasps ] oh, dear lord.

I have felt several times that my fiancé

Will have already been in bed with me.

He's asleep, and it's clear as day,

Like a real person sits right down on the bed.

He's also in a lot of physical pain.

He doesn't want to feel that,

So he does give it to you.

That's exactly what I've been feeling like.

I get these --

I call them phantom pains all over my body.

Yeah. It's not good.

It could make you really, really sick

If you're exposed to this long-term.

It's something that could be terminal.

[ voice breaking ] I have a 3-year-old.

That's exactly how I feel.

Steve: So what else?

So the next thing that I encountered

Was this bizarre-looking spider-like creature,

And it took me some time to figure out

That it was actually a deceased male

Projecting this way to make himself scary.

I got that he came from extreme money,

And this was from a family back in England.

He was all about money and power

When he was alive, definitely not a good person,

And he's, like, whining for his mom.

He's like, "I want my mom. Where's my mom?"

A lot of what she's talking about

Reminds me of a guy that was murdered.

What?

It happened about a mile from here in 1900.

Now, the victim was a guy named john w. Crowell.

He was 66 years old when he died.

Now, the guy you saw you said came from big money, right?

Yeah.

Crowell claimed to be the descendant

Of an english multimillionaire,

And he told anyone who would listen

That he was the heir to the family's huge fortune,

Which was about $30 million.

Wow.

On December 4, 1900, he was shot and killed

While he was working on his farm down the road from here,

So now when the wife heard the gunshots,

She ran outside to see what happened.

And he was screaming out, "mother, mother, mother."

Police believed the murder was a robbery gone bad,

And they never found out who did it.

I got a drawing of him.

So do you think john crowell might be the guy you saw?

Yes.

So can he do anything to the living?

Yeah.

He hates living people.

His main goal is to scare y'all out.

He'll do a thing where he'll tap.

Yeah, exactly, the tapping.

You did, too, right?

I've heard the tapping. Yeah.

He also likes to try --

Try -- to imitate your voices.

We've heard voices for sure.

Lots of voices.

And I have heard my husband call my name after he died.

He likes to hide in the dark and in shadows

Because, you know, it makes him look scarier.

He showed himself to me as an m-shaped spider creature.

I see this --

It's like a shadow of a spider.

Okay.

I'll see it on the wall closest to my head.

Ann, now, you saw a black mass over your bed, right,

When you were in the house? Ann: Yes.

It started to get more solid, and it started to descend,

To come down right at my face,

And then it eventually went back up

And it dissipated towards the ceiling.

So the tapping, the voices,

This creature, it's all the same person?

That's "m," yeah, who I call "m," or john.

So I was in the lavender bedroom,

And I was seeing "m,"

But he had put himself in the wall.

Mm-hmm. And I had a sketch done of that.

Grandma, this is your room.

♪♪

Oh, for heaven's sake.

♪♪

Well, that's something, huh?

That's scary.

Steve: What's this thing doing to rose?

Amy: He was feeding. Alyssa: Mm!

And when the dead feed off the living,

They are sucking your energy out,

Like, your life energy.

Oh.

So I'm very concerned about that situation.

Well, I have woke up a few times with short of breath.

Okay. Yeah, I have had that happen.

What you just described is exactly what happens to me.

Oh. I wake up gasping for air.

I feel like the life is being sucked out of me.

It's probably traveling around the house

And feeding off of everybody.

The other thing that I experienced in that room...

Getting really bad lower-abdominal pains

All the way through my back, my hips.

It feels like I'm being either hit or punched.

This whole stomach area... Yeah.

...Continuous pain that never left.

[bleep] is it possible

Kenzie has interacted with this thing?

Yeah. Oh, my god.

That's why she...

Wakes up sometimes at night,

Kind of like I do.

She'll be, like, swatting at herself and saying,

"get it off me. Get it,"

Like she thinks there's a bug on her or something.

Steve: Did you see anything else?

When I went into the dining room,

I did feel an overwhelming sensation of death

Coming from every direction. Mm-hmm.

I got that someone had died here recently

Or that someone here was close to death,

And then I saw a tunnel.

Now, this is the same tunnel

That some people see when they die.

The dead are constantly passing through this tunnel,

And being around it can make you drained

And it can make you very sick -- very sick.

Now, you feel nauseous a lot, right?

Oh, my gosh, yes, all the time.

Amy: There are several things I want you guys to do,

So the first thing would be a medium

Would need to come to reunite the farmer, david,

With his wife, sally.

The medium will then help them to move on,

And once this is complete,

You're going to feel a lot better.

The second thing that this medium needs to do

Is to summon "m," or john.

The medium will also pull john's family,

And when he sees his mother,

He'll go with her and leave everyone here alone.

So she'll stop seeing those shadows

That look like big spiders and stuff.

Yeah. I can't wait for that.

The third thing that I would like you to try

Is to have the medium go to the location of the tunnel

And try to possibly relocate this tunnel.

I guess you have a 50/50 shot.

And if it doesn't work out?

Even if the medium can't remove the tunnel,

It will still be safe to stay here.
