You're probably wondering why Brian and I are here.

It's because music is a big part

of every skater's performance.

>> Over the years, I have had to choose

a lot of music for my routines and I

noticed one name kept popping up

over and over again.

I was so drawn to his music,

but I didn't know who this guy was.

>> It was the same for me, Brian,

but I also noticed that many of the

themes and songs used at the opening

and closing ceremonies of the Olympics

were written by this same guy.

Here to performance his magnificent

theme from the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics

is the Hit Man himself.

It's really hard to imagine it's

been two a half years since we

were here in Vegas taping my first special.

And guess what?

We left out many great songs, many great stars,

we just had to come here and do it again tonight.

So I was always this guy that people knew,

but they really didn't know because

I was working behind the scenes,

producing and writing the music.

Sliding it under the door, they

slid food back under the door,

and I never saw the daylight for 30 years.

Early in my career I was a piano player.

Like most musicians, always looking for a gig.

I found out that there was this

band that needed a pianist, so I asked

my neighbor Willy to give me a ride

to the audition.

We get there, my friend Willy

jumps on the drums just to "help out,"

and of course he gets the gig and I don't.

I hate Willy.

I hate him, I hate the band, I hate everyone.

Oh, and the name of the band?

Loggins and Messina, I hate them.

(laughing)

Fortunately, I got over it and

years later I had the chance to

write and produce for one of

the all time great voices and talent,

this California genius, doing a couple

of songs we wrote and produced together,

ladies and gentlemen, give it up

for Kenny Loggins!

What a way to start out, man.

Wow.

Now I wanna go back to 1975.

I was a piano player playing piano

and arranging on a lot of sessions,

including an album with George Harrison

which was thrilling to me to actually

be with a Beatle, so George called me

and he asked me if I would play on an album

with a friend of his from a band called Spooky Tooth.

Now I never heard of a band called Spooky Tooth,

but it just sounded kinda interesting to me.

What ends up happening is the drummer,

Jim Kellner and I, end up doing

the whole album with this guy.

I was mesmorized by his talent

and especially by his wizardry,

his machines, he was into synthesizers

and it was amazing to me.

Here he is, this song was such

a mega mega mega hit.

35 years, brother.

So I often get asked, when you write a song,

do you have someone in mind.

And the answer is always no.

Never.

There's only one occasion ever

where I actually had somebody in mind.

I was so positive that that artist

would do this song that when I wrote

the instrumental with my friend

Tom Keene, I actually called it Chaka.

And then my friend, Cynthia Well,

put a stunning lyric to it.

After the 80s, my 90s were actually pretty good.

I thought we might perform a couple

of number one songs, but I had

trouble figuring out who could perform them.

Then like an idiot, I realized...

Why not get the guys that did these two songs with me?

Here's the funny thing.

We made this record almost 20 years ago.

These guys are still in their early 30s.

They sound amazing still and we're gonna

relive a little bit of our history together

for the last two years called Betty Boop.

Betty Boop's grandfather Marvin

is a failed inventor.

He fell in love in his 20s with Sally.

But he disappear from her life suddenly

for no apparent reason.

So in this scene, they meet again, but with a catch.

Poor Marvin's memory is all but gone.

So for her, the spark is still there.

For him, well, I'm sure it would be

if he could just remember.

Now to play the part of their younger selves,

two up and comers with incredible voices,

Mark Masri and Megan Hilty who

was in Wicked not too long ago.

For the older couple, this is so cool,

she is the lovable but nosy neighbor

on the hit show Desperate Housewives.

And he is her new TV husband on

that same show and they're both

so delightful, both television legends,

The world mourned when Michael Jackson passed away.

For sure.

For me, there'll always be special memories

because we worked together a lot over the years.

I wrote a song with my friend Carole Bayer Sager

on his breakout album Off The Wall.

I played and arranged on the Thriller

album with my friend Quincy Jones

and I produced some songs on the

History album, my biggest regret with

Michael was in all the time that

I spent with him, I didn't

cherish those moments more because

we were sitting at the piano together,

we were writing, we were thinking,

we were planning, even something

as simple as when we went to

the movies together, none of us

could possibly have known that

he wouldn't be with us today.

So I thought I would pay my own homage

to probably the greatest song and dance

man of the last 50 years by performing

a couple of songs that I produced for Michael.

I was actually shocked when Michael Jackson

told me that the favorite song he ever

recorded was a song I produced for him,

Charlie Chaplin's Smile.

It was meaningful to him I guess

in a way that we'll never understand.

I thought it would be interesting

if we went a different way with it tonight,

so I presented it to our next performer

and she said I was hoping that you'd

ask me to sing something outside

of what I normally do.

And Smile is perfect.

She has had the perfect career in country music.

Every award possible, millions of fans,

millions of albums sold, she is a country icon.

But like every true superstar, she dared

to go outside of the box trusting me

to make this great for her.

>> All right, so we're here at center staging in Burbank

rehearsing madly for the big show on Friday night.

Let's just try it.

We're heading out to Vegas actually tonight.

Two more days of mad rehearsing.

Friday night, it's like turkey dinner

at Christmas, you spend days preparing it,

only in this case it's a couple months,

and then it's over in three hours.

(transition guitar music)

When we had done The Hit Man two and

a half years ago, and the response was so great

it exceeded I think everyone's expectations.

For the second Hit Man, I had to dig

a little deeper, so I did unique things

like invite Gary Wright to play on the

show, now he had a hit called Dream Weaver

which I played and helped him arrange,

so it was a little bit of a cheat

to have him on the show, but it was,

it's a piece of my past.

>> You can sing that way twice

and then I say (mumble).

>> And then we went to Chaka Khan who

was not able to make the first show,

I wrote the song Through The Fire

for her and produced it, but we did

dig a little deeper and we cheated

a few times, but I cheated a couple

of times on the first show, I had

Brian McKnight and Josh Grobin

sing Bridge over Troubled Water,

now everybody knows I didn't write that song.

Or did I?

please welcome Olympic gold medalists

Kristi Yamaguchi and Brian Boitano.

>> It kinda made sense, last time Andre Agassi

introduced me and I thought let's just

keep that sports theme going.

I wanted to open the show with my

'88 Winter Olympics theme anyway,

so I thought that would be great

to have two gold medalists who

have actually skated to a lot

of my music to intro me.

>> Voiceover: Okay David, here we go, David.

He's making his entrance.

>> The Hit Man himself, David Foster.

>> Good evening everyone, and welcome

back to Mandalay Bay!

We shot the show at the Mandalay Bay

which is a great arena, that's where

we did the first show.

It's really hard to imagine it's been

two and a half years since we were

here in Vegas taping my first special.

Guess what?

We left out many great songs, many great stars,

we just had to come here and do it again.

(transition jazz music)

Can I have a little string help

with this, do you know, do you have a chart?

We were rehearsing in Los Angeles mostly,

but then we got to Vegas on Wednesday

and then just crammed on Thursday and Friday.

The repeat is good, but not really.

When I go into rehearsal mode where

everything just stops and all I know

is I gotta get through 31 pieces of music

and they've all gotta be done,

they've all gotta be played,

they've all gotta be right.

It's a slugfest.

Michael Bolton comes in, Seal slides out,

Martina McBridge comes in,

Donna Summer goes out and for me

it's like it's day and night focus.

(transition piano music)

We're going good now, we're picking

up steam now, I think we're doing good.

Bit of a scene, but we're rocking.

We've got 34 minutes to get this right.

I have this saying that you get it

done in the time you're given.

Had we been given another week

it would've been great, had we been

given one day less, we would've

made it work somehow.

Let's try to top that, steal the cameras.

God help you if you get it wrong.

(laughing) My band, well I say

my band, but they're not my band,

it's just the band that I'm lucky

enough to get to use and these are guys

that have been with me, basically I

played sessions with some of them in the 70s,

so 30 plus years.

You think about Nathan East on bass,

arguably the greatest bass player on the planet.

Dean Parks and Tark Aconi on guitar,

it's just all veterans, and JR the drummer

who was Michael Jackson's drummer

back in the day, Quincy's drummer.

Then a couple of great keyboard players,

Bo Cooper and Mo Pleasure, both

incredible players, both better than

me by the way by a long stretch.

'Cause I think I might talk instead of play.

Musically, I was definitely the weak

link up on stage, and I really mean this

because I had so much traffic cop stuff to do.

The entire time that I was playing a song,

all my brain was doing was thinking

what's coming next, who's coming on next,

how do I introduce them, what do I say,

how do I get this person out on stage.

The strings, there was just so much

going on in my head and trying to

look cool which is hard to do sometimes,

so my playing suffered.

(transition rock music)

David Horn, we're gonna try running it,

can we have a little stage help?

Poor David Horn, the director,

who's magnificent, really didn't

get a dress rehearsal and I think it's

to his testament that he made this

show look as beautiful as it does,

there's the occasional crane shot where

you can see the crane in the shot

and we just didn't have any other choices,

but it's because he didn't get a rehearsal,

I mean he literally did not get a dress rehearsal.

He was calling the show on the fly.

>> Just tell David he surprised me,

I didn't know he was gonna talk.

>> You know with me, things always

happen out there, the unexpected always happens.

>> Good evening everybody, guess what just happened!

I already screwed up!

>> Yeah, the beginning of the show was

really rocky, adjusting for monitors

and clicks in the ear and entrances and exits.

Somebody said to go out, so I went out

in the middle of your speech, so

we're gonna do that one more time, okay?

The song, it's a great song which

I can't take credit for, it's called...

What's it called?

>> Can you imagine anything worse

than having to stop a superstar

while she's singing a song?

She will never speak to me again,

but when she watches this back

in the March pledge of PBS, she'll

be very happy that I stopped her.

>> Okay.

>> And it was nothing you did,

it was something I did, I was

actually playing it in the wrong key.

But we got rolling, and the magic

of television is you can make it perfect.

I don't like to leave any mistakes in the show anywhere.

They're all cut out, but it was great

and it's editing down into a beautiful show.

Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Kenny Loggins!

Kenny Loggins and I have had a long history together.

>> Were you there --

>> Hi, I'm David.

(laughing)

It got cut out of the show, but the story

that I told about I auditioned for his

band when it was Loggins Messina

and my drummer friend next door gave

me a ride up there and he jumped

on the drums, he ended up getting

the gig and I didn't get the gig,

so I hated Kenny Loggins for years.

I always walk the fine line with

artists of no, it's gotta be this way,

this is my show or whatever power trip you wanna pull,

but I could never do that because

it's, really, it's their face.

>> It's just in the middle (mumble).

>> So on that particular instance, a thing

we had to change, that took about

half an hour to change that one thing

because I had, in editing his song,

I cut his lyric in half, something

that I don't pay that close

attention to, but obviously he does,

they're his lyrics, I had written

the music, he wrote the lyrics.

It just didn't work for him,

so we had to drill down and that

took a half hour of super super valuable

rehearsal time, but he needed to be

the way he wanted it.

>> So you go...

>> Five, six.

Well with the pairings, you know, if you

could imagine, I was like a kid

in the candy store, okay I've got

20 artists and basically any of them

are pretty much willing to sing with anyone.

These are the kind of things that

kept me awake at night laying in bed,

I literally woke up at 6 o'clock one morning

think wow, Bolton and Seal,

that's just too good.

♫ You're gonna (mumble) ♫

>> But then how does that end,

it just ends that's not gonna be right,

so then that's when I came up

with the Chaka thing.

>> I think we got a little trouble here.

What I told Chaka is I said well

you come out and interrupt them.

I want you to come up there

and just bust out and interrupt them

and go wait a minute, I got a different take on this.

Then go into I'm Every Woman.

She busts out and she goes

with the great line that I could

have never thought of.

>> There's just way too much testosterone up here.

>> And I planned that in my mind,

Bolton into Seal into Chaka in this

great 10 minute piece of theater.

It's just fun, I mean it's what I do.

>> Voiceover: Okay here we go guys, stand by.

>> So second half opens.

Yeah, well when we were trying to

build the show we were thinking,

we knew we had to have an intermission

and I wanted to end big and I wanted

to start the second half big.

You can't believe how excited I am

to introduce my favorite band of all

time, Earth, Wind, and Fire!

I was the guy that would stand in

line at midnight at Tower Records

waiting for their new album.

So I was a super fan.

>> They started my career.

I mean really, I had been a successful

keyboard player and session player

and arranger a little bit, but in 1978,

when I was brought to them by my friend Carol Childs

and I sat down and I played...

(plays "After The Love is Gone")

♫ How could you lead me on ♫

>> And they went yeah, we'll record that.

We'll record that right now.

That started me off on a journey

with them and I learned so much

from them because they were

my favorite band.

I'll be when...

It's just always hard when you're

in the moment, and I did my share

of cursings, like oh I can't do it,

I'll never do this again 'cause

it's like moving a giant wall,

it's like moving a mountain.

I don't remember.

Oh, I see.

>> Oooh, I'll be.

>> Artists by nature are particular.

Artists by nature are peculiar, and that's

what makes them wanna get

up in front of 20,000 people

and pull it off, it was just amazing

that they all came out for me

and the camaraderie and the,

I mean they were just all so willing

to try and make it work.

They knew that I was putting in the work.

That I wanted it to be great and

I wanted it to be great for them because

in the end, when you're watching the show,

you're not watching me play piano.

You're watching Donna Summer sing,

you're watching Seal, you're watching Martina McBride,

you're not watching me playing the piano.

I am still the guy behind the scenes

that gets to jump up from the

piano and introduce everybody

and sing their praises, so all in all

I think it was a job well done.

It was a team effort and when people see the

final show, I think they're gonna be thrilled.

I know I am.

And I'm a hard guy to please.
