- [Narrator] Summer was at its hottest

and the meadow was bathed in golden sunshine.

All the meadow creatures were busily going

about their day except for two little friends

who were cooling down in the shade of a leafy tree.

- Do you want to play again Little Field Mouse?

- I do Little Nutbrown Hare.

But it's nice and cool here in the shade.

- And so hot in the sun.

If only we could take the shade with us.

That way we could play anywhere

in the meadow we wanted and be cool too.

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Do you mean take this tree into the meadow with us?

[Little Field Mouse strains]

Come on tree!

[Nutbrown Hare laughs]

- No it's much too big and heavy!

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Oh!

Oh look.

[upbeat music]

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Maybe we could play under a rock like these clever ants.

That would be nice and cool.

- [Little Gray Squirrel] You're much too big

and tall to play under rocks.

- Huh? - Huh?

Oh hello Little Gray Squirrel.

- Hello!

[Little Gray Squirrel giggles]

- What a lovely big leaf.

- Thank you!

The best thing about it is

it's light and shady so you can take it wherever you go!

[Little Nutbrown Hare gasps]

- A leaf shade!

What a clever idea, Little Gray Squirrel.

I wish I had one!

- You can have this one.

- Thank you thank you it's so shady!

Now I can play in the meadow and be cool at the same time!

But what will you do?

- I can get another one!

- Can you get one for me too?

- Okay.

Hm.

- Oh thank you!

Look, it's perfect.

It keeps the sun right off me.

- No good.

Too small.

Not quite right.

Oh never mind.

- Ready to play?

- Let's go! - Let's go!

- Whee! - Around and around!

- Yippee!

- What a beautiful leaf dance.

- Hello, Blue Bird.

Did you really like it?

- It was magnificent.

Just like that big leaf you have, Little Nutbrown Hare.

Come on, let's go show Big Nutbrown Hare.

[Big Nutbrown Hare sniffs]

- Mm a perfect rose.

[Little Nutbrown Hare laughs]

- We got you, Big Nutbrown Hare!

- Oh you did.

What wonderful big leaves to hide under.

- They are wonderful aren't they!

- Oh especially that one, Little Nutbrown Hare.

It's very impressive!

- Oh thank you!

It is impressive.

Little Gray Squirrel gave it to me.

- Watch me leap!

[Little Field Mouse giggles]

- Wow let me try!

Whoo whee!

- And me!

Ah look at me!

- Ooh that looks like fun!

Oh you nearly flew like birds.

- It was really fun!

- Ooh and what a marvelous big leaf Little Nutbrown Hare.

- Thank you, Otter.

I think it's marvelous too!

It's my special leaf shade.

- Hmm.

- Oh!

- Ooh here comes a summer shower to cool us all down.

[Otter laughs]

Oh I hope those leaf shades keep the rain off.

[Otter laughs]

- Oh let's go!

[Little Field Mouse laughs]

I'm dry!

Well, almost!

- I got a bit wet.

[Little Gray Squirrel exclaims]

- That's because there's a hole in your leaf.

- Not a drop of rain on me thanks to my impressive

and marvelous leaf shade.

- Mm.

Can I have it now please?

- What do you mean?

- My leaf can I have it back now?

- But you gave it to me, didn't you?

- Yes you did give it to him.

- I know but I've changed my mind.

Now I want it back.

- Oh okay I guess.

It stopped raining so let's play!

[group pulls]

- Got it yay!

- Enormous!

- Gigantic!

I've never seen these leaves before.

- I have but I'd forgotten all about them

and you helped me remember Little Nutbrown Hare.

- I did?

- So let's play come on!

Ah!

[group laughs]

- Hm I wonder where Little Nutbrown Hare is.

- Surprise! - Surprise!

Ah oh!

- We got you again!

[Little Nutbrown hare laughs]

- This leaf is even more fun than three leaves!

- Because we can share it.

- Let's play some more!

- [Narrator] And on that golden summer's day,

the friends learned just how much fun there was

to be had by sharing.

- You know, this leaf must have been very special

to Little Gray Squirrel.

- Why's that?

- Because he wanted it back so much.

- So it was good of him to let you keep it

and good of you and Little Field Mouse

to let him take the enormous leaf home.

- It felt good but the best feeling of all

was being friends again.

[Little Nutbrown Hare jumps]

Guess how much I love you.

Hm let me see.

As much as you enjoyed sharing the enormous leaf?

- No as much as all the things I share with you.

[Big Nutbrown Hare gasps]

- Me?

- Yes like tasty green grass shoots.

Mm. [Big Nutbrown Hare chews]

And warm summer evenings.

- And colorful sunsets?

- Mm yes and the great big silvery moon.

[gentle music]
