- [Narrator] After a long winter,

springtime had finally sprung in the meadow.

When the warm morning sun shone down

on Little Nutbrown Hare, he woke up,

stretched lazily, and lay listening to the birds.

[Little Nutbrown yawns]

But soon, he noticed something unusual.

- Aah. [sniffs]

- [yawns] What is it?

- Something is different, Big Nutbrown Hare!

- What something?

- There's a smell that wasn't there in winter.

[Little Nutbrown sniffs]

Everything seems the same, but [sniffs]

I can smell a new, very special smell! [sniffs]

- [yawns] What does it smell like?

- [sniffs] It's sweet, and pretty, and fresh, yes!

- Oh, it sounds quite wonderful!

- It is!

Can you smell it?

- [sniffs] I can smell lots of wonderful smells,

like juicy grass roots, and [sniffs] fresh spring leaves.

- Oh!

I know!

I'll go find what's making the special smell

and I'll bring it back for you to smell, too.

- Okay [chuckles], I'd like that.

[Little Nutbrown giggling]

- Aah!

[Little Nutbrown panting]

[Little Nutbrown sniffs]

[Little Nutbrown panting]

[sniffs] If I stretch up really high

I might be able to smell it! [sniffs]

No, maybe it's down really low.

That's [sniffs] kind of like it, hmm.

[Little Nutbrown sniffs]

- [giggles] Hello Little Field Mouse!

- Oh hello, Little Nutbrown Hare!

I'm dancing my spring dance! [humming]

What were you doing down there?

- I'm searching for something special.

What are we looking for?

- Well, we're not exactly looking for it.

- Oh?

- We're smelling for it!

- What does it smell like?

- It smells fresh, sweet, and pretty!

- [sniffs] Oh, I know that smell, yay!

[Little Field Mouse giggling]

- [sniffs] Smell this blue flower, Little Nutbrown Hare!

- [giggles] Oh!

- [sniffs] See, sweet and pretty.

- It's not exactly the smell we are searching for.

I'll take this one back so Big Nutbrown Hare

can smell how lovely it is.

- Okay, so what can we smell next?

Oh, little white flowers! [giggling]

[sniffs] Ooh, do come and smell them.

- [sniffs] Hmm, sweet and orangey,

and a little bit like thesmell we're searching for, but.

- But not the exact one?

- Right.

- [sigh] For Big Nutbrown Hare. [squeaking]

[both giggling]

- [sniffs] Ah ha!

- Ah ha what?

[Little Nutbrown panting]

- [sniffs] Over here!

[Little Field Mouse panting]

[Little Field Mouse sniffs]

- [Both] [giggling] Lovely!

- A bit like honey!

- And a bit like the special smell.

- [Both] But not exactly like it!

- Oh!

[lighthearted music]

- [Both] Boo!

- Whoa, [chuckles] you startled me!

[both giggling]

- Look, we've brought someflowers for you to smell, here.

- [gasps] A hyacinth! [sniffs]

Mm, sweet and pretty.

- [gasp] An orange blossom! [sniffs]

[gasp] Bluebells, mm! [sniffs]

Sweet, like honey!

Wonderful smells.

- [sighs] But none of them are the special smell

I smelt this morning.

- We haven't found it anywhere.

- Hm, have you tried the woods?

- Mm, I love this huge old tree [sniffs].

- [Both] Mm!

- Smells damp!

- And woody.

- Is it the special smell?

- [sniffs] Almost, but not exactly.

- That smell must be around here somewhere!

[gasps] Ew!

- Let me smell it.

- No Little Nutbrown Hare, it's yucky!

[Little Nutbrown sniffs] - Oh!

- I like it!

- [sniffs] It smells nutty to me, yummy!

- Well that's odd.

- I guess we don't all like the same things.

- Because we're different!

- We are, but we like some things the same.

- [Little Field Mouse] Do you think

I'm going to like the special smell?

- Oh yes!

[sniffing] I can't stop smelling everything.

- Me either! [sniffs]

- It's all so new and different from winter.

[sniffs] Mm, like this damp moss on the rocks.

[Little Nutbrown sniffs]

- Mm, and the soft, green grass that grows by the water,

all sweet and fresh.

- It's nearly time to go home.

[gentle music]

Do you know something?

- What?

- The air smells different beside the creek.

- [sniffs] Yes, it does.

- It's a little bit like the fresh smell of this morning,

but not exactly it.

- [squeaks] Well, I suppose I should go.

I've had heaps of fun today, Little Nutbrown Hare.

- Even though we didn't find the special smell?

- Even though we didn't.

- Goodbye Little Field Mouse.

- Goodbye! [panting]

- [sniffs] Hm.

[peaceful music]

- You're very quiet.

- [sigh] I really wish we'd found

the special smell Big Nutbrown Hare.

We searched all day!

- Don't worry, maybe you'll find it tomorrow.

Good night, Little Nutbrown Hare.

- Sleep [yawning] tight [yawning].

- See you in the morning light, mm.

[birds chirping]

- [Narrator] The next morning,

Little Nutbrown Hare awoke and stretched as usual,

but this time he didn't lie listening to the birds,

because he smelt something.

Something special!

- Big Nutbrown Hare!

I know what the special smell is!

- [chuckles] What is it, Little Nutbrown Hare?

- It's the smell of springtime in the morning!

All the lovely smells of yesterday rolled into one!

- [sniffs] You're right, Little Nutbrown Hare!

It's springtime in the morning. [sniffs]

And it's so sweet!

- And fresh!

- And pretty! [sniffs]

And there's even a touch of woodiness.

- I can't wait to tell Little Field Mouse!

[Big Nutbrown laughing]

- But why does spring smell different to winter?

- Because [grunts] lots of pretty flowers grow in spring,

and the grass is long as sweet,

and the trees have fresh green leaves.

Come on, let's go and see!

[cheerful music]

- Where are we going?

- Right here, into the middle of the meadow.

- [Both] [sniffing] Mm!

- Springtime!

- [grunts] Whee!

[both giggling]

- Guess how much I love you?

- As much as the pretty flowers?

- Not exactly.

- As much as the fresh green leaves?

- As much as all the [sniffs] smells of springtime!

- Even the smelly ones?

- Even the smelly ones!

[both laughing]
