"The Nest"

- [Narrator] It a beautiful spring day in the meadow

and all of nature's creatures were busy.

[snores]

- Around and around and around

- Now, open your eyes.

What do you see?

- [gasp] Big Nutbrown Hare fast asleep.

[giggles]

[snores]

- And he's still snoring, too! [giggles]

My turn now!

- [giggling] Now open your eyes.

What do you see?

- [gasp] A Hawfinch!

[bird tweets]

And she's singing!

- My turn again!

Whoa.. Ooh.. [giggles]

- Can you see anything from down there?

[giggle]

- Yes! Blue Bird is making a nest!

- Oh, so she is!

[bird tweets]

- That looks like fun.

- If we had our own nest,

we could play in it together.

- Why don't we build one?

It doesn't look that hard.

- Yes, let's do it!

I'll get some leaves

- And I'll go and find some twigs and sticks!

[cheerful music]

- [collides] Whaoh!

- [giggles] Sorry, Little Field Mouse.

- [giggles] It's okay, Little Nutbrown Hare.

Now what do we do?

- Hmm.. Well..

I suppose we put them together

in some sort of nest shape.

I'll put this here

and that there

- and make it kind of roundish

- There! Our very own nest!

- Wait! I've got one leaf left

- We didn't make it strong enough.

- Then let's try again! [giggles]

- There! That should be stronger.

[sighs]

- It's much stronger!

- Eer...

- Oh!

- [sigh] But it's still not quite strong enough.

- Then let's try again!

[cheerful music]

- There

- Do you think it's strong enough?

- Let's try.

- Ooh..

Aah..

- Ooh

- Aah..

It is strong enough!

- [Both] Hoorayyy!

- Well, what do you think of our nest?

- It's a bit

itchy!

- Yes, the sticks and twigs...

Ooh..

Are very pokey and prickly!

- And scratchy and stickly!

- We need to find something soft

to line the nest with,

to make it more comfortable.

- I know just the thing!

[panting]

[giggles]

- A thistle bush!

Won't that make the nest even more prickly?

- Not the prickly thistles!

We'll use the soft down.

Feel how soft it is

like a feather.

[blows]

[giggles]

- It tickles

[sneezes]

[chuckles]

- I told you it was soft like a feather!

This should stop our nest being so prickly and pokey

- You're right.

Our nest isn't prickly now,

it's. [giggles] tickly!

- Yes, the thistledown is tickling me, too!

[giggles]

- We can't.. [laughs]

use the nest.. [laughs]

because we'd be... [laughs]

laughing all the time! [laughs]

- We'd never get any playing done! [laughs]

[Both] [laughs]

- Ooh... How can we make a comfy nest now?

- [Sigh] I don't know

Yes, I do!

The thing that makes the ground soft

..is the grass!

We can use this to make the nest comfy!

- Yay!

[bird tweets]

- And the good thing about using grass

is that you can eat it when you get hungry!

[eating noises]

- Yummy!

- There! That should do it.

- Yay!

It looks as comfy as a meadow in springtime!

Mmm! It feels comfy, too!

- But doesn't it feel...

too cozy, now?

A bit tight?

- Ooh! Yes, it's all the grass.

- Hey!

Your tail is tickling my nose.

- There's not, er,

as much room as there, er,

was before.

- But we can't take the grass out,

or the nest will be all

scratchy and tickly again!

- And if we leave it in, there's no room for us!

It's such a good nest, but no good for us.

- Ooh... Then let's give it to someone else!

[playful music]

- Hello, Little Grey Squirrel.

Would you like a cosy nest?

- It's very comfy.

- Thank you. I don't really need a nest.

I already have a fine drey, high in a tree.

But it might be just the thing to carry my acorns in!

- Then it's yours!

- Thank you, that's very kind of you. Ooh

There's a hole in the bottom!

- We're terribly sorry, Little Grey Squirrel.

- We'll try and find someone else to give it to.

[laughing at a distance]

- I can hear Little Nutbrown Hare

and Little Field Mouse coming,

and when they get closer..

[chuckles]

I'll leap out and [startled]

- Hello, Little Redwood Fox!

- Sorry, Little Redwood Fox.We didn't mean to surprise you.

- That's all right.

- What are you doing hiding in a bush?

- I wasn't really hiding

I was just staying out of the hot sun.

- We're looking for someone to give our cosy nest to.

- Would you like it?

- Aah... Thank you, but

I don't really need a nest.

I already have a fine den.

- I know! You could use it to keep the sun off you!

- Ooh?!

- It's perfect! Now you can go out in the hot sun.

- It does keep the sun off, but it is

hard to keep on my head - especially when I do this..

[playful music]

[gasps]

- Thank you. It's a fine nest

but it's not something that I need right now.

- Big Nutbrown Hare. Would you like a cosy nest?

- Oooh.. It certainly looks like a fine nest..

Ooh.. [chuckles] But it might be a bit small for me.

Besides, I already have a kind of nest that is just right,

because it fits both me and a Little Nutbrown Hare

perfectly. Especially when we snuggle!

- [sigh] Doesn't anyone want our cosy nest?

- I wouldn't say that.

In fact, I think I know the perfect place for it.

- Where?

- There!

- Who will get it there?

- Let's find out.

- [startled] Ooh!?

[bird flapping wings]

[running and panting]

- Yay!

- Yay!

- Of course! A bird! It's a bird's nest!

- [sighs] I wish we had a nest of our own to play in

- But we do! We have the whole meadow to play in!

- Yes! And it's big enough to fit all our friends! [giggles]

- [Narrator] And so, Little Nutbrown Hare and

Little Field Mouse spent the rest of the afternoon playing

with friends in the meadow,

which was after all their very own great big nest.

- [yawns] Guess how much I love you.

- How much?

- More than all the different nests in the ah... world!

- Guess how much I love you. As much as only one nest.

- Only one?

- Yes. This one. The best nest in the whole world

because it's got you in it.

[yawns]
