That was really good Charlie, you are really improving.
Oh look it's Tom and his wee weirdo brother eh.
Look at the state of him. We had a right good laugh watch you trying to get you to kick that ball today.. didn't we?
Pathetic!!
Tom where are you taking him?
keep him here. We will teach you how to play football
He is going home to learn from his mummy ha ha .
I'm glad my wee brother doesn't act like a RETARD
Don't you ever say that again.
Can you not take a joke
Come on Charlie
Here are you letting him away with that? No way!
(intro music)
Right. I'll phone you when we are in.
I know Marie... don't start will you
That's me away
awww I wonder who that will be
what are you talking about
it will be wee Jess wont it
Right... that's us nearly ready to go
are you finished up there?
Charlie.
I just need to sort them. Get them in the right order, get them in the right order
Are you not finished up here yet?
I need to sort my books
Are you kidding me on? I gave you one job and you've had all morning.. .
mmmmm I need to sort them, I need to get them in the right order
Ok. Ok
them in the right order. ok? Ok.
CHARLIE V.O. (Voice Over) My name is Charlie Joe Mitchell. I am 25 years old
I love books and gardening. I hate watching soap operas and shouting.
I have a brother called Tom.
My favourite food is chinese food.
I have always lived with my mum but today
I am moving into my own flat. I am happy to get my own flat. I am Charlie. This is me
I am me. And this is my story.
My brother Tom helped me get my new flat ready. Tom is 32. Tom always looks out for me
He put up my lists and numbers and all my favourite pictures.
The garden has lots of pots in it. I love my pots and I love having my own garden.
I love helping my brother Tom Right Charlie, you can do that later, there is plenty still to be done inside
We have your bed to build and you are planting merecats
CHARLIE V.O. Tom stayed for 3 nights after I moved in.
He took time off from his job. His boss said it was fine. But his girlfriend Maria was
not happy. Mum could not come because she is not well and the doctor has told her that she has to stay in bed .
I made macaroni cheese
in the microwave and Tom said it was awesome.
That was awesome,I tell you I think it was even better than that stuff mum makes
Don't tell her I said that. You know what's she like with her cooking.
It takes 4 and a half minutes in the microwave.
Then leave it to stand for one minute and make sure you don't get burned.
(From kitchen) Good tip. I'll remember that.
I need to sort my books.
They're all sorted Bud, they are looking great. In fact the whole place is looking fantastic
It's not easy moving house, it never is, but you're doing great
ok
Right, well I better make a move. I am meeting Maria later on. Remember Maria?
Maria is 27. She has blonde hair and she drives a red car. It smells like perfume.
That's right
Well she wont be happy if I am late
Maria is never happy, she only thinks about herself
have you been listening to my phone calls again bud
Right now remember all the phone numbers you need
are by the phone and when you go out you remember and take your card with you because if you feel upset
you follow the steps to help calm you down!
Now Amy is going to come over tomorrow and go through everything with you
Now if you need to phone me And you can phone me whenever.
Your going to be great Bud. I'm going to be great. Thanks Tom.
CHARLIE V.O I like having my own flat. I like doing what I want. getting to watch what I want on tv
I like having Tom as my big brother. Tom always looks out for me and makes sure that I am ok
He says that no matter what happens he will be there for me.
I love my brother Tom
Can you just drop it now please I have had a rough couple of days
I just don't like how you are making out that I don't
care about him. I never said that.
That's what it sounds like...And of course I care about him.
He has a name you know. I know and know he is your brother and you need to help him I just don't know why our whole lives have
to revolve around him. Charlie! His name's Charlie!
CHARLIE(V.O.)
I miss having Tom in the flat and helping me but I like being on my own
and being independent
CHARLIE V.O I have been in my flat for 1 week and 5 days.
I love having my own flat and my own garden
I like my plants. I like my new evergreen plants the best.
Hello.
eh hello
I have been meaning to introduce myself. I'm Mandy. I live down the road - number 32.
The one with the red door. I'm Charlie. My full name's Charlie Joe Mitchell.
My date of birth is 22/5/89. I'm a gemini but I was nearly a taurus.
It's lovely to meet you Charlie Joe Mitchell. I'm Mandy Young.
I can't believe how good you have got this place looking already!
Maybe you can sort my garden out for me?
Just tell me when and I can come round. I can come round anytime as long as it's not before 5 o'clock. And not on Fridays.
Oh no Charlie. I was only joking I just meant - well you've inspired me to do something about it
Anyway I just wanted to say hi and bring you these
Thank you. I love cake.
Well I better let you get on. It was really nice to meet you Charlie Joe Mitchell
And I'm sure I'll see you around.
ok
CHARLIE (V.O.) I like living in my flat and speaking to Mandy Young
from number 32 with the red door
I like having my own garden and doing my shopping and sorting my books.
CHARLIE (V.O.) The only thing I don't like about my flat
is some people who live near me.
Here, there's that wee guy I was telling you about. The one that has just moved in there
check the state of him
I still can't believe that he has been handed his own flat
my dad says its ridiculous
aye your dads right....what a FREAK
why does the likes of him get his own place
it's not right man
aw check it, he just dropped his wee pile of books
what do you need those books for wee man
(laughing) it's not as if he can read
can't believe we have got to put up with the likes of him around here
tell me about it
CHARLIE V.O sometimes when I am out they shout things
I don't like shouting
and I don't like the words that they say
Hey Cal. Oh hi Jess.
How come you haven't been answering my texts? And I facebook mailed you
Oh you're in trouble now Cal.
Shut it Bryan. Ah haven't checked my phone.
I think I left it in the house I just thought we were going to do something tonight remember
I should have known you'd be with him.
What's wrong with that? He's my best mate. Is he not allowed to have pals anymore
Sorry Cal I didn't realise you were married?
Cal! It's just a joke.
Oh no look who's back
alright pal
who is that?
Just a wee guy that's moved in over there
Some wee spazzy you mean
you can't say that Brian, that's a shame
ahh don't be feeling sorry for him
he's the one that's got it easy
just been handed that flat for nothing
aye Jess my dad says it's people like him that are screwing the rest of us out of money
too right
I don't really know about stuff like that Cal
Well I am telling you it is true
oh right
Honestly, I don't even know why you hang about with him anyway
He is my best mate Jess
well you act like a total idiot when he is around
why were you giving that guy a hard time?
It's just a laugh. I thought you liked a laugh
I do
well then it's not even like he knew what was going on anyway
CHARLIEV.O It happens a lot
sometimes when I am in my garden
looks like they have let the freak out (laughing)
sometimes I am out
laughing and mimicking
sometimes when I am in my flat they shout things
what you looking at you paedo
and they drop litter
cans and bottles and crisp packets
I don't like litter in my garden
sometimes they throw things at my window
I try and ignore it like mum said
but it is hard
sometimes I wish it would all go away
Hey bud it's me
I'm just trying to tell you that I am running late. I have been held up at a meeting at work
I should be with you before 7
right see you soon
Sorry I am late
I was trying to phone you actually. what have I told you about answering your phone
Are you alright bud?
look I brought you your favourite
sweet and sour chicken
well I will go and heat it up in the oven for a bit
Now I know I promised to bring mum round but
she wasn't looking great to be honest
I just told her to go back to bed I think she has been trying to do too much
Charlie are you listening to me
Mum was meant to be coming round at 6
I know but I am just after telling you that she is not
feeling well
she did however send you this
round for your garden
its going to be looking like the botanics out there soon
what do you reckon
it's a rose bush plant
I like rose bush plants
I know you do and that is a particularly nice one
mum was meant to be coming round at 6
she was meant to bring chicken pie
and mashed potatoes and Heinz baked beans
yes I know Charlie, but I have just told you that she is not feeling well remember
I see Amy was round today
yes she came round at 10.23 and we had tea in the garden and chocolate hob nobs
that's good
are you not hungry bud?
you have hardly touched it
listen I'm sorry I have not been round as much as usual
its just this new job is really taking it out of me. you know
we have a new project we are trying to get in London
hey what about your food?
I thought that was your favourite
I need to sort my books
so was Amy saying anything else when she was round?
she says I might get a new job
a new job, that's brilliant bud
did she say where
no
still that will be good for you back working again eh
and your still liking being in the flat?
I like my books and I like my garden
and I like getting to watch my own programmes on tv.

Mandy Young

I am a nurse remember
I work in the hospital that your mum's in
the ambulance is on it's way
make you all better
Charlie everything that has been happening to you
it is going to stop now ok
I am going to make sure of it
Tom
Yeah don't worry we are going to get Tom for you

They are on their way
I hope you realise what you have done to him
I do mum I really do
cheers
sorry about earlier
don't be daft
I totally understand
Its just
seeing him like that... you know
I know
I was the same
but he is going to be fine and that's all that matters
I wasn't there for him
you know when he needed me
I should have protected him
you didn't know
I knew something was up
I have just been really busy with my work
but I don't think Charlie wanted anyone to know what was going on
I'm telling you if I could get my hands on those two wee guys
leave it to the Police
they are not worth it Tom
I get so angry because
he has had to deal with stuff like this his whole life
I remember
I used to hear my mum crying at night
I would go in
would ask her if she was crying
because of the way Charlie was
she would say no, it's not the way Charlie is
it's the way everyone else is
you will set me off again
sorry
the thing is my mum
my mums not going to be around for ever you know and em
getting him into the flat was really important
I understand
It's 4 o clock in the morning
I can't believe you are still here
CHARLIE V.O I had to stayin hospital for 4 days while
the doctors made sure I was ok
Tom came back from London to help look after me
he said he was very angry with the boys for what they had done to me
he said I should have told him what was heppening
I told him I didn't want to get him into trouble
I don't like Tom getting into trouble
Tom said that he would let the Police deal with it and the only ones who would get into trouble were the boys
he said he would never let anything like this happen to me again
Thanks Tom
you are welcome buddy
VO Mandy Young and Jess came to visit me in hospital
they were worried about me too
Jess said she wished she could change what had happened
she brought me some books and Mandy Young brought me cake
so the Doctor reckons that he will get out tomorrow
I'm going to take him back to my place for a couple of days
just until we get his flat back to normal
That's a really good idea
Anyway I just wanted to say thanks
Mandy for everything
being there for him
staying with him
just for understanding
you are a really great brother Tom
Charlie is really lucky to have you
no
I'm the lucky one
I need to sort my books
fair enough bud
fair enough
(music)
V.O I stayed at Tom's flat until the Police sorted stuff
then Tom helped me get my flat back to just how I like it
My garden looks better now
I got lots of new flowers for my pots
Amy helped me when I moved back in
She comes to visit me in my flat
and we have chocolate hob nobs and tea
I like Amy
I went back to my job in the garden centre
sometimes Lizzie comes into the garden centre
I like Lizzie
I have been back at my group and I love it
Jess works there
Her mum made her volunteer at first but now she comes because she loves it
Everyone loves Jess
We walk home together sometimes and we always talk about books
I am happy that Jess is my friend
and she isn't friends with those boys anymore
Mandy Young comes to visit too and she always brings cake
everything went back to the way it was for a while
me and Tom would visit mum at the hospital every Tuesday and Friday
and I would always take mum roses
mum loved me bringing her roses
things are different now
Tom said that it is ok and that change is a normal part of life
I don't like it when things change but Tom said that I was not to worry
and that no matter what he would always take care of me and make sure that I was ok
Mandy Young said that she would always be there for me too.
I like Mandy Young
Tom you may kiss your bride now with love and compassion
My brother Tom likes Mandy Young too.
My name is Charlie Joe Mitchell
I am 26 years old
I love books, walking and gardening
I hate watching soap operas and shouting
I have a brother called Tom
I have a new sister called Mandy
she looks out for me just like Tom
my favourite food is Chinese food
I have a learning disability
and I have autism
sometimes I might not always act like you expect
sometimes I might get scared or I wont understand what you say
but I am not ashamed of who I am
look at me and you will see there is so much more to me than that
I am someone's child
someone's brother
partner or friend
I am the passenger on the bus
the stranger on the street
the customer in the supermarket
the person you pass on the way to work
the inconvenience to your life
the neighbour down the road
the child in the park
so you have to look out for me
don't ignore me
don't be scared of me
don't turn away and pretend you can not see
I am who I am
because I Am Me
