It's also the most difficult. It starts at
the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado...

... and begins a spectacular climb
over 6,000 feet into the Rocky Mountains...

... finishing nearly 12,000 feet
above sea level.

And that's over the highest paved road
in North America.

Not many of these cyclists
have ever raced at this altitude.

In Europe, for instance, the courses
through the Alps are much lower.

It's a torturous course.

Even the fittest athletes can't get
enough air to maintain a normal speed.
