We got started this morning,
but we ran into too much mud.

So we decided to let it dry out.

Look what "Maine Cabin Masters"

has done while we've been gone.

Oh, this is beautiful!

Yeah, we're going to a new camp.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: Back in Belgrade,
who are we going to see today?

CHASE MORRILL: We are headed
to meet Linda and Mike White.

They are newlyweds...
Well, getting close

to their one-year anniversary.

How many years are we out, Ryan?

Your honeymoon
is definitely over.

We're upset.

Ha!

Gus, our honeymoon is
over, but not yours and mine.

CHASE MORRILL: This camp
has been in Linda's family

since she was a little girl.

She claims her father bought
it for her personally.

They are looking to put
a foundation under it,

and then put a small
expansion on it

for a screened-in porch area.

And it will have a
daylight basement, as well.

It'll be good practice.

It's going to be
on a foundation?

Yes.

Wow, we're getting
lucky this year.

CHASE MORRILL:
You know, luckily,

they've hired a jacking
and foundation company.

ASHLEY MORRILL: Oh, not us?

CHASE MORRILL: Not us.

We'll come in, just do the demo.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: Perfect.

CHASE MORRILL: Yeah.

I think we're here, Gus.

What's going on here?

Oh, this camp is up in the air.

LINDA WHITE: It is.
We're really excited to put a...

That's a sign of progress.

Yeah.

...Put a foundation under it.

This is a family cabin
that goes back to 1957.

My dad had purchased a
1956 Ford convertible.

And he repaired it,
and then he resold it.

And that $1,500, he applied
to buying the cabin.

So I'm so thankful that
I have the cabin now.

And I just want to expand
it, upgrade it for us

and for future generations.

MIKE WHITE: And we're going
to add a new roof to it,

put some new windows.

ASHLEY MORRILL: You like
the trim color, the green?

Yes, we do.
We do like the trim coloring.

Yes.

ASHLEY MORRILL:
OK, so find a color

that looks nice with that trim.

LINDA WHITE: Right.

CHASE MORRILL: And so it's
going to be a full basement

with a daylight front.

LINDA WHITE: Correct.

I see a chimney up there.

Is that our heating source?
MIKE WHITE: Yes, it is.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: And are
we going to keep that?

If we can.

There's a fireplace
inside that's...

Fireplace?

...Made out of aluminum.

OK.

We could insert.

LINDA WHITE: I prefer
not to burn wood,

whether it's electrical,
or gas, or whatever.

It's bright red,
so it stands out,

it kind of goes with the cabin.

So I really don't
want to lose it.

So once the camp's back
down on the foundation,

we're ready to get started.

When would you
like the camp back?

Well, we were in
kind of in hopes like,

maybe late September?

And so how much are you looking

to put into the construction
piece of this project?

It would probably
be approximately

$50,000 to $60,000, rebuilding,
remodeling part of it.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Because that even... that
includes the new roof,

the new windows, the
expansion off to the sides

for the screened-in
porch, the daylight

basement down below,
expanding the kitchen area,

and redoing the
bathroom upstairs.

I think that's a
reasonable budget...

Correct.

CHASE MORRILL:
...to get that done.

So you can enjoy the place.

LINDA WHITE: Yes, exactly.

Exactly... giving us more time
to enjoy the fun on Great Pond,

because Great Pond has
a tendency to offer more

fun than anyone ever expected.

And we're approaching your
one-year wedding anniversary,

MIKE WHITE: After watching
many, many episodes on TV,

we felt strongly
that "Cabin Masters"

was the most qualified.

They seem to cherish that
thought of remodeling camps

that have a history.

And we just can't wait.

You guys did all the hard work.

RYAN: Yeah, well, we got
started this morning,

but we ran into too much mud.

So we decided to let it dry out.

CHASE MORRILL: Turned
to mud fast, didn't it?

RYAN: Oh, yeah, it did.

We raised it two
and a half feet,

put an eight-foot
basement in it... gives

"you 7'10" for wall height.

But it needed it
anyway, because it

was so low that the
ground was up here,

and the camp was down here.

So when is the
foundation going in?

We're hoping to have
it done next week.

Oh, next week?

RYAN: You know.

Can't plan anything
in construction.

ASHLEY MORRILL:
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, next week, and then we
can come back and get in there.

Then we'll do the floor
and backfill it, and...

CHASE MORRILL:

and find out what I can keep,

what I'm going to be
able to work with.

But today, we just found mud.

CHASE MORRILL: So the
Whites have $60,000

to put into this project.

That involves screened-in porch,
access on the side addition,

new roof, new windows up above,
finishing off the basement,

bathroom downstairs,
enlarging the kitchen,

finishing off the interior,
new bathroom upstairs.

So it's a larger budget,
but there's a lot to do.

ASHLEY MORRILL: Ryan?

Had enough of this.

RYAN ELDRIDGE:
She's in good shape.

ASHLEY MORRILL: No, no, no, no!

RYAN ELDRIDGE: We're back
at the Whites on Great Pond.

And we are doing
things out of order.

Normally, it's... meet the
homeowner, call the guys, demo.

This is... meet the homeowner,
bring a team in, set the camp

back down, and then demo.

So it's going to have a
huge, finished basement,

and a big, huge, covered
porch on the side.

The foundation's
quite a bit bigger

than the house, so we
had to build some walls,

put down the plates
on the whole thing.

And then we can set it
down and get on to demo.

Now, the problem
we got to deal with

is, we got to get
around this beam

and keep all our
heights the same.

And it's running downhill.

We've got to prep this
thing so the concrete

and the jacking company
can bring it down.

One of the challenges
is, there's

beams coming everywhere.

So we have to leave pockets.

On the back wall, where it's
all concrete, they left pockets.

We'll either put a window
in, or board it over.

So it sets down on the plates,
you peel the beams out,

and it's go time.

And that beam's in
the way, which sucks.

So 48 and 42 is 90, right?

MAN: Yep.

Plus a quarter and
an eighth is 3/8.

What did you have?

93 and 1/2.

And then we also got to
add an inch and a half

for the top plate.

That gets us to...

MAN: [inaudible]

We're an inch off.

MAN: Huh?

We're an inch off.

We're trying to build
the basement walls today,

but we're having a lot of
trouble with our measurements.

This was a pretty
difficult project.

You know, if we had used a
Transit and stuff all the time,

would be one thing.

But we usually
use a laser level.

So we're trying to chase
around the right height.

What sucks is you can't... we
couldn't even get a laser in.

There's no clear path to even
get a laser on it, you know?

That's why we got
Nick "The String Guy."

We decided to go old-school,
and use a string level

to determine the wall height.

Level?

NICK: I think you're
going to like it.

It's pretty level.

Let's just run with it, then.

We'll get our little jacks in if
we have to, and microadjust it,

put shims in.

But it's going to be close.

And hey, we're going to be
working off of concrete floor,

so it'll be perfect.

Four stars, just
like this job site.

Right, guys?

Brian from the jacking
company, he came by,

saw what we've done.

And we've got mini walls
with bracing and blocking,

so they won't get crunched.

And we're going to put
some 6-by-6 pressure

treated posts, where
we have half-flats

on the existing building.

And he's confident it's going to
come all down, him and his team

will have it perfect
for when we get there.

Yeah, you know, this
isn't your typical camp.

Normally, it's... meet the
homeowner, call the guys, demo.

This is... meet the
homeowner, call the guys,

bring a team in, set the camp
back down, and then demo.

CHASE MORRILL: We are on
Great Pond in Belgrade, Maine.

And we are back
at the White camp.

They're still working
on the foundation.

They still need to get the
floor poured on the lower level,

and backfill around the camp.

But we're here to kind of get
inside, to start demo, get

into it, and see what
we're working with,

and come up with a plan for it.

Wow, she's up on foundation now.

CHASE MORRILL: Yeah, so
we just need safe access.

So we'll build a
bridge to get in.

Bridge builders
anonymous... get to work.

I'm unionized.

Not only did we have to set
the camp down and get here

before the demo
team, we had to build

a bridge to get over there.

So it's been interesting,
to say the least.

CHASE MORRILL: Ryan
and Ashley and I,

we're here to meet the Whites.

But they haven't been inside.

I've been inside it when there
was still a lot of stuff.

So it'll be good to get in
and actually tear into it,

see what's behind the paneling,
and see what it's going to take

to actually, you know, do the
changes that the Whites are

looking for.

Whoa, there's
nothing left in here.

When I met Linda,
she was telling

me all about this red stove,
and how special it is to her.

This is the red
stove that she loves.

So her dad painted this.

And she loves the red.

I actually like the red, too.

It's really neat, actually.

We never, ever, ever, ever,
ever see wood stoves like this.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: Well,
I was nervous to walk

across that bridge
with my heavy tool bag.

And I was very surprised
when I got there.

It's really nice
inside, you know?

So it's kind of cool that
that's not going to be

the hugest amount of work.

You know, we're going
to focus on making

it all one big
area, screen porch,

and redoing the basement.

That's coming out
because the kitchen is...

You know, we're extending
that living space.

The bedroom, we're going
to pull down the paneling,

put up more pine to match.

Finish the ceiling, obviously.

CHASE MORRILL: Finish
that ceiling off.

So it's two bedrooms right now.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: Yeah,
making one big one.

...Bigger, and then increase
the size of the bathroom

up here, as well.

All right, we've got a plan.

This camp is going to
have so much more room just

by putting it on the foundation.

And you're going to get
two bedrooms downstairs.

So then the bedroom
upstairs can now get larger.

The living space
can now get larger

because they're going
to add an addition as

well, with a screened-in porch.

I mean, this place is
going to be able to hold

all of their family.

There it is.

Nice job, Ryan.

I'm ripping and
tearing right now.

Had this exterior
doorway here that

led into the screened-in porch.

We're going to get
rid of this wall.

And then along
that kitchen wall,

once the counters
are out, then we'll

be able to open this right up.

And we'll move our kitchen
to the front windows.

The Whites love the idea of
having a screened-in porch.

But the screened-in
porch is going

to be moved to where the new
addition off to the side is.

And once we move that
screened-in porch,

we'll be able to open
up the kitchen area

and make it the larger kitchen
and the living room area.

Ryan?

RYAN ELDRIDGE: What?

CHASE MORRILL: Beautiful
floors under here.

Nice!

The hardwood!

CHASE MORRILL: I know!

They never even used 'em!

Probably throughout.

We just... I don't
know if they're glued.

It's almost... it's unfinished!

RYAN ELDRIDGE: I got to
see what's under this.

beautiful floor under here.

RYAN ELDRIDGE: The hardwood!

They never even used 'em!

Under that, too?

So when we were
pulling everything back,

I peeled back a piece
of the carpeting

in one of the bedrooms.

And it looks like beautiful wood
floors... unfinished, untouched.

It's almost... it's unfinished!

CHASE MORRILL: Yeah,
they're gorgeous.

They... look, it goes all the way

throughout the whole thing...

CHASE MORRILL: It is!

Yes!

DIXIE: Look under here, Chase.

CHASE MORRILL: Yeah.

DIXIE: It's in the kitchen.

We'll kind of leave all
that stuff down as a protector

so that we don't damage
the floors any further.

And once we get further
along, we'll peel it all up

and see what it's going to
take to refinish the floors.

If we can salvage those
floors and reuse them,

that's fantastic.

This is a major score.

This has hardwood floors
under it that never got used.

And this camp's not that old...

Probably the '80s, maybe?

Who would do that?

Fake brick... looks
like Santa Claus set

something, and then hardwood.

People did that all
in the '60s and '70s.

It makes no sense.

So that's going to save
thousands of dollars,

and it's going to
save days, you know?

This camp is taking
a lot more time

to jack and level and get back.

So hey, that might get them
back three or four days earlier.

And that's awesome,
that's a big score.

This porch is
really, really little.

You know, it's nice for
like, a good chair, too.

But I think it's going to
be nicer to have this all

opened up as living space.

JEDI: Yeah.

Yeah, yeah, you got
fatty grilled cheeses.

MAN: Get a large fries...

RYAN ELDRIDGE: I
need an ice cream.

CHASE MORRILL: Today, we
are pulling off the siding

on the existing screened-in
porch, pulling out the kitchen,

and peeling back the
paneling and the wall

in-between the two bedrooms.

It's week four
at the White camp.

And we're focused
on getting the two

sliding doors and the bay window
in the basement framed out.

One of the biggest
challenges with basements

is the feeling of darkness.

Basements are always dark.

It's called a daylight
basement, but the back half's

full of concrete.

So you want to try to get as
much light in the daylight side

as you can.

Once that's done, we can
start sheathing the exterior.

We're here at the White camp.

It's a beautiful, muggy morning.

Few things on the
docket today... we're

going to get all our
downstairs basement framed in.

That way, Doug can come in
and get all his plumbing done.

We're getting the
upstairs all finished,

and demo-ed, getting
everything out of there

that doesn't need to be there.

All right, hold on.

Dixie and I are working
on the new addition.

We've got our two
walls framed up.

And now, we're going to
do our post and our beams

in the front end of
the screened-in porch.

So what I'm doing is, I'm just
notching out some of the old

sheathing on the existing
building so our 4-by-4

and 6-by-6 can fit tight to the
framing and existing building.

Today, we're working on getting
the rafters and the roof sheath

ASHLEY MORRILL: Ready for mine?

Sure.

We'll do your outside one,
and then we'll do the...

These last two, and figure
something out for the outside

so we can start sheathing.

We're looking good,
in terms of time.

There's a little bit to do.

We have some milling to
do, and some tying in, too.

But I think we can potentially
start to roof it on Monday.

JEDI: We're here
at the White camp.

Got our sheathing
boards up, paper down.

We're ready to
lay some shingles.

Climbing up in that
morning dew, it's

a little slippery to start.

But sun's popping
out, it's drying off.

We're able to rock and roll.

This roof's really
straightforward.

There's just one chimney
coming out of it, which is

really easy to step and flash.

Other than that,
the two rooflines

came together really well.

So it's just putting our drip
edge, and laying our shingles.

We're here at the
White camp today.

We had a lot going on.

Everybody was here,
everybody had a job to do.

And I jumped on our
belly band, our flashing,

and our clapboards.

So do we do the windows first,
and then adjust the belly band?

Or do we do that belly
band across, and figure

out the windows after?

Ideally, those windows
should be in there, right?

Ideally.

There were four openings
where the jacking company

and the foundation
company left open

in order to remove the
I-beams after jacking

up and leveling the camp.

And Ryan had ordered
some custom-sized windows

to put in those openings.

And it was just a matter
of figuring out how

those windows are going to sit.

Generally, you want
some wood framing.

Because actually, if we
put anything on the bottom,

that's going to bring
that up to there.

Those cut outs in
the concrete were there

to move the I beams
through the house

when they moved the house,
so it wasn't really straight.

It wasn't square.

It wasn't plumb.

Yeah, I don't know, man.

The issue we're
dealing with out front

here at the White
camp, the homeowner

wanted windows back
here for the basement.

These weren't really initially
built or poured for windows.

These were poured, so he could
slide the beams in and out,

and lift the camp,
and put them in.

We've got some custom windows.

They're a really tight fit.

Unfortunately, when
you have a tight fit,

working with concrete,
it's not always easy.

How are you doing this?

I don't know.

I don't know.

So what?

I'd like to have
framing inside my window.

So you cannot build a box?

We cannot.

We have 24 and 3/4
inch wide windows.

3/4 inch on the
bottom, 3/4 inch on top.

You will still be able
to get your window in.

Well, the windows
are made to screw.

They've holes through the sides.

What's going to stop
them from coming out?

They'll have a stop,
and then we'll silicone.

On both sides, we'll
stop front and back?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Oh, OK.

Because they're going
to get these stops.

We're going to
silicone the window in,

and then silicone the
stops on the side.

It's not going to...

The side ones are, basically,
just a weather seal.

Yeah.

We were able to frame up inside
those little mini windows,

you know, just a
little bit of stuff

that we had kicking around.

We get them to lock in
there, filled our stops.

Now, we have a nice, sealed
off window in the basement.

Generally, this is what we do.

We tie-in new
stuff to old stuff.

Very rarely do we start
with new construction,

and it's just part of
what we have to deal with.

Custom windows call
for custom framework.

All right, last one.

It's a beautiful,
sunny, windy day here

at the White camp in Belgrade.

Windows are going in.

Doors going in.

The side over here is finished
off, just ready to be painted.

The front here,
we've got the doors

that need to be
installed, a few windows,

and then get the
place finished off.

Originally, this camp
was sitting on posts.

It was jacked up, a new
foundation put underneath,

and a 10 foot wide addition
was put on this end.

That allowed for a
large second bathroom,

two extra additional sleeping
rooms, and a nice set of stairs

up to the main camp.

This will be an enclosed,
heated space with a doorway

out onto the screened in
porch and a nice, wide entry

into the main living space.

We've got a larger master
bathroom, a larger master

bedroom, and by removing
the old screened in porch,

we were able to open up this
for a new, larger kitchen area.

The ceiling will
come across, and then

we'll just close in some walls.

It will give the Whites
a lot more living area.

The view's amazing.

You know, it was amazing before,
but now that it's raised up,

you can see a whole
lot more of the lake.

And it's just a
really nice space.

Even the basement's
going to have a great view.

We're going to put in
these huge French doors

and let a lot of
light into this place.

Normally, you have
you pressure treated

plates and your KD plate.

And we'll just cut
the KD plate out.

Well, because of the
levels and stuff,

we had to put a pressure
treated strip in here

to get the floor thick enough.

So we can't take this plate out.

So now, I've got to
gnaw away at the header.

It's really a pain
in the butt, but we

have a big 10 inch skill saw.

I should be able to do it OK.

It's going to look like I
gnaw away, like a beaver.

But it'll be practical.

It'll work.

CHASE: You always
run into issues,

and the level of
the foundation floor

was a little bit higher
than we had planned for.

So Ryan ended up having to cut
out a little bit of the header,

which is no big deal.

Because there's a six by six
header that the entire building

is sitting on.

That was just kind of
an additional support,

so losing an inch or inch
and a half isn't a big deal.

Come on, guys.

Let's go find daddy.

This place gained
a lot of space.

- It's huge, isn't it?
- Yeah.

Its huge.

So you guys are going
to spray this all out?

Yeah, I'm not sure
what color it is.

Its a color similar to this.

- Oh, cool.
- They liked the colors.

They wanted to stick
with the same colors.

Nice.

So the Whites really liked
the color scheme a lot,

so we just decided
just to freshen it up.

So we were painting the trim
a nice deep, forest green,

and then the body is going
to be a little bit lighter

of a tan color.

And we're going to keep that
dark, forest green at the trim.

This was originally
a screened in porch,

and there was just
open screening.

I had the guys frame
in for new windows

that we were going to order.

But I didn't realize we had two
windows left over that we had

ordered that, I
think, we had planned

for another one in the
bathroom and probably

one on the opposite wall.

But we decided we
didn't need those,

so we had two extra windows.

So I know it's going
back and redoing

the work they've already done.

But instead of waiting three to
four weeks to get new windows,

I figured it's worth
changing this out

in order to use the
windows we have to get

this place entirely closed in.

Lovely.

Keep our fingers crossed
and see if it fits.

Yes, lovely.

The next big steps are
finishing the exterior.

We're pretty close
there now that the doors

and windows are mostly in.

We'll get the siding
finished, so that Jay can

come in and paint everything.

And then it's going to be
go, go, go on the interior.

ASHLEY: Come on, Charlie.

Get up.

So Linda has a very particular
style, a particular taste.

So I wanted to just
stop by, and kind of

get a feel for their
style, and see if they have

any pieces that were
taken out of camp

that I could put back in.

So Linda loves, loves,
loves this red fireplace,

and actually, it's pretty cool.

It's not like anything
you seen in any cabins.

Yeah, it's very, like, retro.

Very.

Mhmm, I like it.

Yeah, it's cool, so I feel
like a lot of our design ideas

should kind of be
focused around that.

We can go poke around
in the storage to see

the furniture they left me.

You have the red fireplace
that her father painted,

and that fireplace is
kind of the focal point

of the whole upstairs
living space.

So it's going to be
really great to be

able to pull in pops of reds to
kind of complement that stove.

So when I first
came here, there was

this, like, round
sort of piece of art

on the end of the building.

They're called barn quilts, so
they're just pieces of wood.

And you paint them, so they
almost look like a quilt.

And I feel like that's something
that they would appreciate.

Yeah, it seems like their style.

Yeah, as I see quilts
in the background.

Yeah, all the quilts.

Yeah.

DIXIE: So today, I'm
here on Great Pond.

We're at the White camp.

We are plugging right along.

90% of the windows are in.

So now, we've started on
putting pine up on the inside

and just working on some
miscellaneous stuff around.

I'm just wrapping up the
smaller basement windows that

were in the front, allow
light into the bedroom

and the bathroom that's
going to be in the basement.

And the rest of the crew,
Brad, Brian, and Sarah,

are all working on putting up
the one by eight [inaudible]

that we're putting on the walls.

It's week seven
of the White camp,

and Dixie and my painting
crew are out there,

spraying out the White camp.

They really wanted to
give it the same color,

brighten it up or spice it up a
little is to add a barn quilt.

So we have enough to finish this
room out with all the old stuff

with the same patina.

then the different rooms

will be new.

Then downstairs, this
will be all new pine.

little stuff up here.

to pour, finally,

This week, our hardwood flooring

specialist Rick is
here to refinish

the floors in the White camp.

The unfortunate part is the
carpet had been glued down,

so we called Rick to
refinish the floors.

He came in, and he said he
probably went through a stack

of sandpaper about this tall.

But he was able to get
all the glue off the floor

and get them restored back
to their original beauty.

You know, we
definitely saved money

by refinishing the floors.

If we had to install
all new flooring,

it would have taken
a lot more material.

We also need to put flooring
in the new screened in porch.

Instead of trying to match up
what was original in the camp,

we decided to go with a
click together flooring

that is perfect for areas
that need to be waterproof

and where there's not going to
be heat, so changing whether.

It's all plastic.

So if you have dogs,
if you live on a lake,

especially for a mudroom coming
in with wet shoes, sandy shoes,

it will definitely
withstand a lot of abuse.

These floors look unbelievable.

They do.

Imagine how much
sandpaper he went through.

That's just getting all
that white stuff up.

It was the glue
that banged them up.

It's beautiful.

Totally worth it.

it family friendly, a very

warm, welcoming feel, but
still be accommodating

for the whole family

downstairs, while the adults

can relax upstairs.
