Today we are on Clary
Lake in Whitefield, Maine.

And today we are
meeting Charlene

and Penny Lynn Anderson, two
siblings that own the camp.

We're going to be
there any minute.

It's right around the
corner, according to my map.

This camp is owned by
Charlene and her siblings.

to use it recently.

Seeing the Cabin Masters
come down the road was like...

How's it going?

Oh my gosh, we're
finally going to do this.

So what do we
have going on here?

My parents and grandparents
bought the cabin in 1964.

We've been coming up to
Clary Lake since 1958.

When my father passed away
in 2010, we got this cabin.

CHASE: What are some of the
major issues you guys have?

[laughs]

RYAN: Besides everything.

Where should I begin?

As you can see, there
hasn't been much TLC to it

in probably two decades.

CHASE: Hasn't been stayed in.
RYAN: It's still standing.

CHARLENE: It hasn't
been stayed in.

Two decades, no
one's stayed in it?

CHARLENE: No, no.
It hasn't been used.

I can smell it from here.

[laughs]

I really can.

Actually, it has been stayed
in by lots of rodents.

CHARLENE: Yeah, it
is one of those.

So definitely, it is not level.

It twists and turns.

There's no power.

CHASE: No septic, no water.

So there's no bathroom, so
we'd like to see a bathroom

be put into it and a mud room.

There's what I call
widowmaker windows

up front that all need to be
replaced, which you'll see.

RYAN: No weights on them?

ASHLEY: You open and
they come slamming down?

above your head.

- They hang up on the ceiling.
- Yeah.

When I was a kid,
I was so afraid

that that thing was going to
come down on me, and I'm like...

Now, in terms of color,
is there anything you

would like us to stay clear of?

Yeah.

So when my parents bought
it, it was gray and white.

Please stay away
from those colors.

ASHLEY: OK.

Kind of like something that like

pops and brightens it
up and adds some color.

We know how to make things pop.

And do you have
access to the water?

CHARLENE: Yes.

Right now we don't have a dock.

We've got what I would
call a trip and fall...

[laughs]

...To the lake.

Yeah, it would be nice to maybe
have some steps or even a dock

maybe.

How much are you looking
to spend on this?

So thinking like $50,000.

I think $50,000 is probably...
With the holding tank,

new plumbing, new electrical.

We'll come in here,
put a holding tank.

Hopefully do something
about all these roots,

because these are definitely...

ASHLEY: Toe stubbers.

CHASE: Tripping hazard as well.
CHARLENE: Yes, they are.

They're speed bumps.

I don't know if you want

I mean, we are at camp.

Our understanding is these were
fish camps that were used way

back in like the
'40s, and that for $5,

not only could you
stay at the camp,

but you could also get a bottle
of moonshine and a massage.

$5 goes a long ways back then.

I don't know how much
of a fish tale it is,

but there might be one.

That's what we've been told.

We're excited to get started.

We've got a good time frame.

We've got a good budget.

We just need a set of keys
and we're ready to go.

CHASE: I kind of like having
those windows in the bedroom.

you wake up in the morning,

you can still kind of
look up and see the water.

RYAN: Inside is just
definitely full on hazmat,

dust mask gross.

CHASE: I don't think
there's any insulation

in this place whatsoever.

I can see why that
would be sketchy.

You guys need to call.

On the inside,

we're going to go
from two bedrooms

to one, which allows us room
to put in a bathroom and a mud

entry area, and also enlarge
the kitchen by stretching it

down the camp a little further.

Oh, yeah, we got options.

How do you pick out
your colors, Ashley?

Hm, by the Tupperware
left in the cabinets.

I can taste the iced tea
from grandma from these.

some inspiration

from one of the colors and then
find a nice complemented color?

new windows, a deck

off the side down

and a new patio area on
the back of the camp.

It's going to be pretty
tight quarters in there.

as big as the camp.

JEDI: I thought we were putting
the whole camp in the dumpster.

Today we are on Clary
Lake at the Anderson Camp.

We've got a dumpster
today, so we should

be able to get the
place cleared out

and see what we're working with.

Do not run your tags through

in this master bedroom.

There's a little nest in there
and I didn't know what it was.

I thought it was a little
mouse nest and I swept it up.

All of a sudden, the bees are
swarming and we all took off.

ASHLEY: They're mad.

CHASE: If we go real
quick, we'll get a shovel

and someone hold the bag.

ASHLEY: Are you crazy?

RYAN: Let me know how they feel.

Those ones hurt.

Might as well call it a day.

A bee holiday.

Did you find the nest yet?

There's a little
bit left in there.

I mean, there were mice,
animals, you name it in there.

And there was one nest.

Pulled that back, and
Ashley had stumbled

into an active beehive.

I can't see them.

So there was something
whipping around.

They were the black
and white wasps.

Yeah, they were.

They looked nasty.

Nothing you want to mess with.

Where was the nest, in the wall?

I think it is.

We're lucky nobody got stung.

Yup, we didn't have any bee
spray or anything like that.

It worked well.

RYAN: But that's
the way to do it.

From now on, you

This whole camp is shaking.

Right now, we're just
pulling up the plywood

to see if this floor
has potential to save it

or if we are going to have
to put a new floor down.

The floor is not salvageable.

The time you'd put into
patching it in, patching this,

and to match up,
it's not worth it.

But I feel much more comfortable
putting new floor down

on this versus down
on the plywood,

because then you're
just building up more

and we didn't know
what was underneath.

And now we can see
what we need to do

right here to patch this in.

If we change the wall layout,
it's all on the same level,

so it's going to go a
lot faster and smoother.

We got it back as far as we
could to the original camp

to rebuild from here up.

This demo is going to be
a huge transformation.

And the big thing was just
getting it cleaned out

and getting fresh air in it.

It's good to get as much of
that out of there as we can.

Let the rain, let it
all just get in there,

and then it'll be
good and ready when

we start closing it back in.

Here we are at
the Anderson Camp.

We are getting this
thing up off the ground.

Front was pretty well high and
dry, but it wasn't very secure.

It wasn't very stable.

The back of the camp
was sitting right

in the dirt, the
number one no-no

in all these camp situations.

Get them up off the ground.

We're working on that right now.

We've got the back end
up to where we want it.

We're going to run
some new beams down.

[construction noises]

Catch everything.

Get everything up in
the air and keep it dry.

And we'll be able
to get some supports

underneath, get some new PT
legs sitting on some pox,

and keep it sturdy.

I'd say we're Cabin
Master perfect.

We're 16 and 15, 16.

So we've run into a little issue
here at the Anderson Camp...

Ant-erson camp.

We found some ants.

We've got a lot of
extensive ant damage

that we didn't
realize was there.

When we were trying to
put our new plate down

to frame out our windows
on the front gable,

we felt it was a little spongy.

Went right through
the floorboards.

We removed the plate
and uncovered this.

More destruction ants.

Those are not carpenter ants.

They're not building anything.

They are destroying everything.

She is toast.

That sill was just absolutely
ruined from ant damage and rot.

So out of the six... oh, oh.

I'm all right.

Sarah just went
through the rotten floor.

What a disaster.

Here at the Anderson Camp...

Ant-erson Camp.

We found some ants.

It's already lapped right there.

We're going to
pull this front out

and we're going to get a new
four by six hemlock in there

and get something
solid to nail to.

Not much support in that
bad boy right there.

That's pretty weak.

I just spent the morning
replacing that front sill.

That just had to come out.

It set us back a day or
so, but it was a quick fix,

and now we're
straight and solid.

A lot of times we
come up to a camp

and you can tell if it's going
to be straight and narrow.

This camp was a
curveball can of worms.

It was high off the ground.

Being high off the ground
usually eliminates some

of that, but it was
just so old and twisted

and there were so
many layers of stuff,

it was definitely
a can of worms.

Next step from here, once we
get all our windows framed up,

we'll be waiting on Windows.

Windows will come in, and
then we can start our siding.

We're at the Anderson
camp this morning.

Things are happening.

Tommy's in there
with the machine.

He's got all those
stops stripped off,

the ground cleared up.

Getting the gray water
tank set, which is huge.

This is a big request.

Now they've got running
water in the camp.

We've got a few
windows here that we're

going to get installed.

Finish up a little
bit of framing inside.

And then we're ready to
just stand and paint.

This is Heidi.

Heidi, nice to meet you.

Heidi, this is Jedi.

We're here to check out the
place and pick out some colors.

We're ready for paints.

We found these cups
during the arrival,

and we were maybe going
to use them as inspiration

for the color for the camp.

So I'm coming today
with my assistant Heidi,

with my swatches of paint.

And as I'm putting this
color up to the camp,

I realize it's going
to look really nice.

The homeowners want something
that's going to pop.

I think the orange is going
to be, but what do you think?

I think whatever.
It's going to be nice.

It's going to be pretty.

It's going to be a
fresh coat of paint.

It's going to be
different siding.

It's going to have a
totally different trim.

Well, I say we go with that one.

HEIDI: Yeah, that's nice.

We are back at the Anderson Camp

on Clary Lake in Whitefield.

We've got two windows here
looking into the master

bedroom, or I guess
master bedroom

looking out onto the water.

Got a porch area here.

Totally rebuilt. A lot
more rot than expected.

Jed came in, rebuilt the front.

New windows right
across to let all

the light in and take advantage
of looking at the water.

Long living space right here.

A doorway into the single
master bedroom with the closet.

Got a long area
here for a kitchen

tucked back in that corner.

Got a bathroom here with
a composting toilet.

Entrance to the bathroom
will be right here.

And you got a mud room slash
storage area right there.

So today, the plan is to
finish siding up this.

Tree stumps are gone.

Roots are out of here.

Working on getting
this side today.

Waiting for the
windows to arrive.

Waiting for the door to arrive.

But we can frame
in the new deck.

It's going to come
off to the side.

And the front is
totally completed,

and this is shows what
it's going to look like.

It's nice off-white trim
with the orange stain.

The place is going
to look great.

This is our go-to siding
when our camp's a little wavy.

We got this camp back.

Jed and his team did a
really good job getting

the camp back as
well as they can,

but there's some waving to it.

With the rough cut siding
and the nice stain on it,

you won't even see it.

So this is a go-to for us
when we have wavy camps.

With a little in and out
stuff, you'll never know.

One of our secrets.

If we want to
start siding, we got

to have a door in, unless
let's you want to put

the cart before the horse.

My biggest fear when
installing a door is it's

not going to fit.

So even being a half inch too
small can lead to at least a

half hour to an
hour's worth of work.

You're always better off to make
a larger opening and shrink it

than you are to make
a smaller opening

and have to cut it apart.

Oh, look at that.

Oh, this didn't get
cut all the way through.

Didn't get ripped off.

JEDI: Just do your job.

DIXIE: A little ahead of myself.

JEDI: Wah, wah.

So when I was lifting to
door up into the opening,

I realized that we needed
at least another 1/2 inch.

So I was able to put
one-inch stock back in

and it was actually
a pretty easy fix.

It was just a little
bit too small.

So we took one of our
two by four jacks out

and replaced it with
a piece of one by,

so at least it will still have
a jack with a header to sit on,

and it gave us ample room
so we can adjust the door.

Love the colors on this place.

I don't know why I love
this place so much.

It's pretty sweet.

Jedi about the plan.

pulled out, all repainted.

You know, this white
trim's really going

to need make that orange pop.

The homeowners really
wanted a cool color.

The orange, pretty much they
took the cup in to match it,

Ashley did.

This really makes it pop.

It looks really good.

They're going to be known on
the lake as the cool camp.

So this is the
side entrance here.

There's going to be a 10'
wide, 8' deep deck right here.

In front of the camp
is totally done.

Windows are in.

Trim is up.

Siding's up.

We got Gavin here
today, finishing,

staining a lot of the boards.

We can't put them
all on because we're

still waiting on some windows.

While we're waiting on that,
we can get the back end,

the non-water side gable
done, and then we can frame up

the deck for the side entrance.

A carpenter's
favorite tool, you know.

Actually a hammer,
bu you know, chisel.

Works with shovel, rope puller.

Does it all.

I wouldn't have my nice
framing hammer in here,

but this is Chase's hammer, so
as long as he's not looking,

we're OK.

here to frame up the deck.

We got the frame done
with the pressure-treater.

We're going to use some cedar.

It's a small deck,
so might as well do

from Great Northern Dock.

They brought down a new dock.

That was one of Charlene's
asks was for a new dock.

They had an older,
frustrated one, heavy.

They brought down new aluminum
with composite decking,

and we got two sections out.

Did an L. Has solar lights.

Got a bench to sit
right out there.

It's got a ladder
out of the water.

It's a great new
setup that will really

help them enjoy the water.

Let's set the
guys up for success.

CHASE: Now that the
dock is being installed

and we've got a good
rhythm going on,

Ashley's working on helping

I was just sketching out a
moonshine bottle chandelier.

Supposedly, you can get
a bottle of moonshine

and a massage for five bucks.

That's actually a
cool idea, because you

can get a nice Edison
bulb, put it in here.

And then I was thinking
right above the sink here.

Three would probably be enough.

I don't think anymore
because it's a small space.

I mean, obviously, it's going
to be a little bit better.

But picture this.

the idea I'm going for.

What I want to do is
make a chandelier.

Remember the whole
moonshine situation there?

So I came out with
the materials.

I just needed something to kind
of case them to hold them in.

Chase had this old...
Of course Chase

had... this old light fixture.

So I took it apart, sanded
it down, spray-painted it.

And then Chase took the
Mason jar, drilled a hole

in the top of the Mason jar, put
the light fixture in, and boom.

We have a Mason jar chandelier.

Whoo.

- Yeah.

To give it an updated look,
we've chosen Edison bulbs,

and I think it came out awesome.

And started to get quotes

And bringing in the Maine Cabin
Masters, just their experience,

they were able to just get
in there and get it done.

Without them, this
wouldn't have happened

in such a short period of time.

I'm overwhelmed by it, and I
had really high expectations

and my high expectations
were exceeded.
