Diana, Princess of Wales.

- Here is the stuff
of which fairy tales are made.

But behind the fairy tale,

the couple are living a lie.

The story of the Windsors
becomes a soap opera

as a voracious press
hounds Diana.

- Could I ask you to respect
my children's space?

narrator: The Queen's
carefully constructed image

of the perfect royal family

is threatened
by an anguished princess

determined to tell her side
of the story.

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

[crowd cheering]

- And here are the cars.

A stunning, silver,
glimmering, shining

Princess of Wales.

- By 1985 Diana has become
the best-known woman

in the English-speaking world.

She is a huge deal.

- She was a superstar.

She was bigger
than anyone in Hollywood

- Everybody wanted to know
all they could about her,

her life, and what the
future was going to be.

- [indistinct speech]
- You go get Harry.

narrator:
By the time she's 24,

Diana has been married to
Prince Charles for four years.

They have two sons.

Prince William,
who is three,

and one-year-old Prince Harry.

- [indistinct speech]
[laughter]

[indistinct speech]

- They are, for all
intents and purposes,

the perfect image
of the royal family.

- I feel my role
is supporting my husband

and also most important thing
being a mother and a wife.

And that's what
I try to achieve.

Whether I do is another thing,
but I do try.

[soft dramatic music]

- She gave this wonderful
impression to the public.

- Have you actually tried
to change Prince Charles

in any way since
you got married?

- Nothing dramatic.

Much.
- [laughs]

- But behind the scenes,
she is very much living a lie.

- Did you know
what you were taking on?

- No, I didn't.

♪ ♪

- Throughout Diana's
marriage to Charles,

there was a third figure
hovering around--

Camilla Parker-Bowles,

the wife of one of
Prince Charles's old friends.

- She was his first love,

and he had never stopped,
really, adoring Camilla.

- Wilt thou have this woman
to thy wedded wife?

- I will.

- Charles really believed

that he was doing
the right thing

by marrying Diana.

But he always knew
it wasn't the deep love

he felt for Camilla.

- And at some point, he resumed
his intimate relationship

with Camilla Parker-Bowles,
who was then still married.

- Princess Diana knows about
Charles's love affair

and she was deeply unhappy.

[indistinct chatter]

- Diana goes and speaks
to the Queen

as she did regularly
in those days.

- And the Queen, all she said
was, "Oh, he's hopeless,"

and did nothing about it.

♪ ♪

- For hundreds of years,
Princes of Wales

have had mistresses.

They've had extramarital
affairs and it's been condoned

at court,
of course, in secret.

- Her husband is unfaithful.

She has two young sons
who require all her attention,

and the royal family expect
that she should shut up

and get on with it.

[soft music]

- Diana found it very difficult
to live in the public eye

with this tremendous
toxic secret.

She was trapped
in a gilded cage.

narrator: For the cameras,
Diana is all smiles.

But people are beginning to
question the way she looks.

- Diana is very thin.

That is concerning.

- Some people say
that you're so slim.

- Um, maybe I'm so scrawny

because I take
so much exercise.

I don't know.
[laughs softly]

- In secret, she's suffering
from this illness

called bulimia nervosa,
which has afflicted her

throughout her royal life.

- The bulimia was partly to do
with the stress

that she was feeling
in their marriage.

♪ ♪

One day she just sat
on the floor, just crying,

just being so distraught.

- But gradually she came to
sublimate a lot of her pain

into the causes
that she took on.

[light music]

- She decided that she wanted
to do something different

than what she perceived to be
the normal run-of-the-mill

of royal things,
of just opening shops

and--and supermarkets
and so forth.

- Leprosy,
domestic violence,

drug addiction,
mental health,

none of these
is mainstream royal territory.

But Diana embraces them
because, as she said,

she knows what it's like
to be unloved,

uncared for, undervalued.

- The Princess of Wales felt
not the slightest apprehension

about her visit
to the Middlesex Hospital

and its AIDS ward.

- AIDS was being described
as some sort of gay plague.

People talked about it
almost in terms of leprosy.

That if you touched
someone with AIDS,

you might contract
it yourself.

- Diana made a point
of wearing no gloves,

showing the world
that she had no fear.

- HIV does not make people
dangerous to know,

so you can shake their hands
and give them a hug.

Heaven knows, they need it.

- The older members of the
royal family were appalled

that she used her
royal position to promote

something which they felt
very uncomfortable about.

- I remember one particular
day when Diana went to see

the Queen, and instead
of saying, "Oh, well done,"

she said, "Well, what do
you want to do that for,

why don't you do
something nice?"

♪ ♪

- In choosing to get
involved with AIDS,

she was no longer just a
glamorous, beautiful Princess.

This was a person who had
decided she could actually

make a difference in the world.

- Charles, too, was reaching
out to the dispossessed

to try and make a difference.

- He provided work,
support,

encouragement to an enormous
number of young people.

- The secret is to enthuse
people who have become

demoralized and perhaps
resigned to the hopelessness

of their position.

- But his work did not attract
the same attention

because the media liked
the glamour surrounding

the Princess of Wales.

It got to him.

"Why is what I do
being ignored?"

- Charles was way
ahead of his time.

He was there before anyone
else with organic farming,

with climate change,
with the environment.

[glass shatters]

- Uh, was it meant to do that?
- Yes, sir.

- He was green before
anybody was green

and he was mocked for it.

The media used to write,

"Oh, Prince Charles
likes talking to plants."

Whereas, Diana was seen
as Mother Theresa.

- Just as he'd seen
his father walking one step

behind the Queen,
Prince Charles possibly

expected his bride
to walk one step behind him.

But Diana was the star,

and he found
that rather galling.

- They rowed constantly
and then would have to go out

and meet the world.

This was very stressful.

- And it was only
a matter of time before

something would go public.

[lively orchestral music]

narrator: Five years
after the marriage

of Charles and Diana,

the Queen departs
for Westminster Abbey

to celebrate the wedding
of Prince Andrew,

the third of her
four children to marry.

- Royal weddings are glorious
moments for the monarchy.

They're opportunities
to refresh the fern,

to refurbish the image.

- Andrew had been seen
as a playboy prince.

He'd been seen as having
unsuitable girlfriends.

- What reputation?

- [indistinct speech]
- How dare you impugn

my brother's honor.
- [indistinct speech]

[laughter]

- And so, it was a real
relief to the royal family

once Andrew got married.

Sarah Ferguson, or Fergie,
as she came to be known,

was a really spirited,
fun-loving character.

- And already from the royal
bride a new royal salutation.

A thumbs up.

- Her father was a polo
manager for Prince Charles.

She was an avid horsewoman,
very outdoorsy.

They both had
racy senses of humour.

- Ow, don't squeeze
my fingers, ow!

- Kiss me, then.

- Why do you want me
to kiss you?

- Go on, hurry up.
- Well, then.

- Hurry up!
- [chuckling]

- They're filming. Quick.
Go on, dare you.

- You're a monster.

- They were,
at least initially,

a breath of fresh air.

[crowd cheering]

- Ah, the kiss.

[indistinct chatter]

narrator: It was Princess
Diana who had played

matchmaker for Prince Andrew
and her friend Sarah.

- Diana certainly welcomed her
as a comrade in arms,

a friend who was
her contemporary.

- These two sisters-in-law
wanted to have a bit of fun.

[lively orchestral music]

- Diana and Fergie were
were partners in pranks.

Tabloids in particular
delighted in following them.

♪ ♪

They crashed a party
in police outfits.

They were poking people
with umbrellas at Ascot.

- They formed quite
a double act.

The public were
obsessed by them.

The Merry Wives of Windsor
they were known as.

- Charles privately
disapproved of this behavior.

He was unimpressed that Diana
and Fergie were going out

to these social events
and playing up.

[laughter and applause]

- I'll see you later.
[laughter]

- The royal family want
royal women to be dutiful,

beautiful, and silent.

- Fergie did not behave
in the formal and dignified way

that royals normally behave in.

- I am quite opinionated.

I like to know
what's going on.

- Do you sometimes
say things first

and then think afterwards?

- I used to.
I'm getting better

at not doing that.

- She was, in the words
of one courtier,

"Vulgar, vulgar, vulgar."

[laughter]

- Sarah Ferguson famously
showcased that she had

this very privileged lifestyle.

- Check out the hair.

- The British public,
knowing they're paying

for that lifestyle,
are not at all happy.

And very quickly the media
turns against Sarah Ferguson.

[tense music]

- The press really started
to set up a division

between Diana, who was slim
and graceful and beautiful

and never put a foot wrong,

and then Fergie,

who they said was fat
and badly dressed

and always making mistakes.

She really got hit

with every misogynist bullet
you can imagine.

♪ ♪

- You don't want to read nasty
things about yourself,

but I also don't really
want to change at all.

I'm quite happy
with my own figure,

quite happy with myself.

So I'm really not going
to listen to it anyway.

♪ ♪

- Fergie becomes
the object of derision.

For a while, she takes
the spotlight off

Charles and Diana.

- The public are becoming
more and more infatuated

with the prince and princess.

- The majority of the public
have no idea what's going on

behind the fairy tale of
Charles and Diana's marriage.

- Confident of their public
image as a united couple,

they at last agreed
to separate walkabouts.

- But this is the point where
the press are beginning

to get some wind of the truth
of what's happening.

♪ ♪

- The first public clue
that there's a lot of trouble

in the marriage
was when they went to Portugal

and the press sussed out

that they were staying
in separate suites.

- And I remember writing
a story for my newspaper

saying that they had,
you know, separate bedrooms,

separate schedules,
separate lives.

And that sparked a whole lot
of focus on the royal couple.

- We saw Charles and Diana,
but not often together.

And it was increasingly clear

that they were spending
an awful lot of time apart.

- Prince Charles has been off
to Italy sketching.

He's been off
in Southern Africa trekking.

He's been up in Scotland,
fishing, farming,

uh, almost doing
anything he can to be away

from Kensington Palace.

♪ ♪

- Slowly, slowly,

a picture was building up
that this was not

the happy marriage that
we'd been led to believe.

- People now were speaking
openly about the fact that

this marriage is not
obviously working.

♪ ♪

[thrumming tense music]

♪ ♪

narrator: In September,
eight-year-old Prince William

is starting at his new school.

- [indistinct speech]

narrator:
But behind the scenes,

his parents' marriage
is disintegrating.

And the media are circling.

- The press did,
of course,

begin to pick up on all of
the stress and tension,

and they did take sides.

[siren wailing]

- Prince William of Britain
received a fracture

when a school mate hit him in
the forehead with a golf club.

- Diana and Charles
were inevitably apart

when news came through from
William's boarding school

that the prince had been
rushed to hospital.

[suspenseful music]

- Diana spends the evening
with her son,

nursing him as he recovers
from this injury,

whereas Charles,

on discovering he wasn't
seriously injured,

then goes off to the opera.

- Charles felt it was
his duty to carry on

with his royal program
for that day.

- But Diana is very agitated,
she's very upset.

And she is sitting in the
waiting room in the hospital

on her own.

- It played very badly
for Charles.

Rightly or wrongly, that's how
it was presented in the media.

[tense piano music]

- The eight-year old
who is second in line

to the British throne
left the hospital

with his mother Princess Diana
after a two-day stay.

- The popular press
had created a narrative.

The Princess was a mother
beyond compare.

♪ ♪

He was a selfish man

and didn't know how
to bring up his children.

♪ ♪

- Diana was very press savvy.

She developed
a great understanding

of how the media worked.

She knew the power of images.

♪ ♪

- She would take her children
to theme parks,

and she would tip some
photographers off

that she would be there.

So they would have some
wonderful photographs

of her
having a wonderful time.

♪ ♪

- When she and Charles
were in India,

she went by herself
to the Taj Mahal.

♪ ♪

She sat on a bench with
this beautiful monument

to love behind her.

♪ ♪

- That picture of her
as a lonely, neglected,

beautiful girl who didn't
have anyone to love her back

just broke everybody's hearts.

She knew what she was doing,

and it made Charles
absolutely crazy.

- It was frustrating.

Of course it was frustrating,
because it exacerbated

the sense that
she was the heroine

and he was the criminal.

- It was a source of great
resentment to Charles,

at how good she was at, quote,
"manipulating" the press.

- Diana wants her situation
to be recognized,

that she is in
a lose-lose marriage.

So it suited her to engage
in a kind of guerrilla warfare.

[intense music]

narrator: Summer 1992.

A book hits the shelves

containing disturbing
accusations

about Charles and Diana's
relationship.

- New biographers claim
to tell all about a woman

they portray as an unhappy
suicide-inclined Princess.

- Andrew Morton's book
was one of

the biggest bombshell books
of the 20th century.

- "Diana: Her True Story"
claimed to tell from

the inside the tale
of a loveless marriage.

- Behind the fairy tale image
of the perfect princess,

her heart was broken,
and she was devastated.

- It was a no-holds-barred
exposé.

It was really damning
of Charles.

I mean, it was cataclysmic.

- Buckingham Palace denies
the Princess of Wales

cooperated on the book
in any way.

♪ ♪

- Diana was cross-questioned
about it quite closely

by her father-in-law,
by Prince Phillip.

She flatly denied having
anything to do with it.

narrator: But the royal family
don't believe her.

They're right not to.

Diana has secretly used
a friend as a go-between

to tell her side of the story
to journalist Andrew Morton.

- I remember vividly going
to a café in north London.

I put on the headphones.

And there's this voice.

And it's Diana.

- It was like entering another
world, a parallel universe.

I was being let into
this secret,

this secret that Diana
was deeply unhappy.

- I was left reeling.

This information is dynamite.

narrator: One revelation
is most damaging of all.

Prince Charles,
the future king,

is in love with another woman.

- This was the moment
when the public discovered

that Prince Charles in fact
had been having an affair

with Camilla.

- The whole world now knows
that Prince Charles

committed adultery
with Camilla Parker-Bowles,

someone that he's had a passion
for throughout his life.

- Charles is an unloving
husband, he's neglectful,

and he's having an affair.

The public were
completely shocked.

♪ ♪

- The royal family had never
had their privacy invaded

in such a way.

They didn't really know
how to handle this at all.

- The Queen and everybody
in the royal family viewed it

as a massive act of treachery,

and it was all orchestrated
by Diana.

♪ ♪

- Here she was, not just
attacking her husband,

but undermining his future,

undermining the throne,

undermining
the royal succession,

undermining the dynasty.

♪ ♪

[gentle music]

♪ ♪

narrator: As they gather
at the Queen Mother's home

to celebrate her
92nd birthday,

the royal family presents
a united front.

But the public knows
that all is not well.

- The publication of
"Diana: Her True Story"

really set the cat
amongst the pigeons.

- The public were obsessed by
Charles's affair with Camilla

and what it told us about the
state of the Wales's marriage.

- The British public warm
to Diana's plight.

They side with her immediately.

They were very sensitive
to the strain

that the Princess is under.

[phone ringing]

narrator:
But an intrusive press

always needs
its next royal scoop.

- Andrew Morton's book was
rather like a starting gun

to all the other papers
to find all the secrets.

Things they hadn't printed.

Finally, they could
put them out there.

- A number of media outlets,
mine included,

had received anonymously
in the post

a cassette tape recording.

- This is a recording of
a private conversation between

Princess Diana and a friend
of hers, James Gilbey,

that had been recorded
two and a half years earlier.

- He's being very affectionate
towards her and it's clear

that the relationship
was more than just friends.

- Diana is talking
to her lover,

complaining about
the royal family,

about how mean
they are all to her.

- And she's reflecting,
rather unhappily,

on her role in the household.

- How it came about,
nobody knows.

My assumption has always been
that it was done by people

who wanted people to know
that Diana was not,

uh, as pure as the driven snow.

- They were very important

in forming public opinion,
those tapes.

It shows Diana not just being
the victim and the tragic

ignored wife.

She actually has a boyfriend.

[quiet dramatic music]

♪ ♪

- The marriage of the
Prince and Princess of Wales

is the marriage
of the heir apparent.

When that seems to go wrong
so publicly,

it endangers the monarchy.

♪ ♪

- The Queen and Phillip
want Charles and Diana

to stick together
for the sake of the children,

stick together
for the sake the country,

for the House of Windsor.

- So the Queen tries
to fix things.

She tries to sit Charles
and Diana down and say,

"Let's talk things through."

Because the last thing
they want is for Charles

to get divorced.

[light dramatic music]

- The whole question
of divorce

was anathema to the Royals.

For the Queen,
as Supreme Governor

of the Church of England,

divorce was something
she hated.

♪ ♪

- Her feelings reach all
the way back to when the Queen

interfered in her
sister's love life.

Princess Margaret was famously
in love with a divorcé,

and the Queen made it clear
that it wouldn't be acceptable

for her to marry him.

- Divorce--it's something that
royal people just don't do.

For the Queen,
this is desperately worrying.

♪ ♪

narrator: But by 1992

the marriages of all the
Queen's children

are in crisis.

In April, Princess Anne and
Captain Mark Phillips divorce.

And Prince Andrew and
Sarah Ferguson's relationship

is falling apart.

- On the front page
of the "Daily Mirror"

had these extraordinary
photographs

of a topless Duchess of York,
Sarah Ferguson,

and a man who was not
her husband.

- This caused
the most enormous scandal

and actually brought
the marriage

effectively to a close.

[mournful piano music]

- The Queen could see
the younger generation

was basically undermining
the whole framework

of the royal family,
which is to be a model

for the rest
of their subjects.

- If they're like us,

equally prone to neglect
and cruelty

and unfaithfulness,
why on earth are we giving them

all this money?

- The Queen was aware the
reputation of the royal family

was at something of a new low.

It was a severe
personal blow to her.

narrator: And in November,
another disaster strikes.

- Fire has swept through
Windsor Castle

and caused enormous damage.

It was probably caused
by a spotlight

overheating a curtain

in the Queen's private chapel.

- On the day of the Queen's
wedding anniversary,

Windsor Castle is in flames.

Most of the state rooms
are destroyed.

It was just a horrible moment
for the whole royal family,

particularly the Queen.

- The Queen loves Windsor.

I mean, that is,
I think her home.

And she was there as a child.

I mean, they lived there
in the war.

[quiet dramatic music]

- You saw that picture
of the Queen in the rain.

♪ ♪

This little diminutive figure
in the raincoat and the hood,

you know, looking
extraordinarily small.

♪ ♪

- The cost of repairing
the damage will be

many millions of pounds.

And it's likely
that the taxpayer

will have to foot the bill.

- Far from being sympathetic
to the Queen,

the public saw people
bringing out treasures

that'd never been seen before.

And there was a tremendous
kind of backlash.

"Why should we pay
for her house,

particularly when she was the
richest woman in the world?"

- It was shortly after
the fire that she gave

her famous speech
to the Guildhall.

- 1992 is not a year

on which I shall look back

with undiluted pleasure.

- She called 1992
a horrible year.

- It has turned out to be
an "Annus Horribilis."

[audience chuckling]

- It is unprecedented.

An acknowledgment to the nation
how things had gone wrong.

- No institution should expect
to be free from the scrutiny

of those who give it
their loyalty and support.

- The Queen realized
it was a time of reckoning.

- That speech is the prelude
to a whole series of reforms.

♪ ♪

narrator:
It is finally agreed

that the Queen
should pay income tax.

And to help fund the repairs
to Windsor Castle,

she'll open Buckingham Palace
to the paying public.

♪ ♪

- But no matter how much good
she does,

it's completely being surpassed
by the war

between Charles and Diana
played out in the press.

♪ ♪

[soft dramatic music]

- In 1993, secret tapes
are released by the press

relating to Camilla
and Charles's relationship.

It's a private conversation
between the two.

- They were speaking in
the most intimate of terms.

[laughter]

- Embarrassing,
appalling for Charles.

♪ ♪

- Charles became
a global laughingstock.

A whole lot of ridicule
was poured on his head.

It was difficult to respect him
as a future king.

He found it very difficult
to cope with this.

And as a result, he thought

he should present himself
to the British people

through the eyes
of a sympathetic listener.

♪ ♪

- I was approached
to make a film

about the Prince of Wales.

I went and saw him,
and we hit it off.

- Harry, Harry, Harry!

- So he opened up.

[indistinct shouts]

- Of course, I do.

It gives me enormous pleasure
and pride.

- He's presented in
a very favorable light.

It's almost
a royal commercial,

but Dimbleby could not help

asking about his relations
with Camilla Parker Bowles.

- The most damaging charge
that is made

in relation to your marriage

is that you were
persistently unfaithful

to your wife.

- It is not a question
that you want to ask anyone.

Let alone someone
who's on the stake.

Did you try to be faithful
and honorable to your wife?

- Yes, absolutely.

- And you were?
- Yes.

Until it became
irretrievably broken down.

♪ ♪

- Here was proof that

everything that Diana had said
was true.

The Prince of Wales
was involved in a relationship

with a married woman.

[tense music]

- If the prince had seen
the morning papers,

he showed no sign
of reacting to them.

- Charles exposing himself
as an adulterer

had a terribly negative effect

as far as public opinion
was concerned.

- Perhaps Prince Charles
should have learned a lesson

from the "Royal Family"
documentary of 1969,

which let in too much
kind of sunlight

into the mystique of royalty.

- Prince Philip couldn't
believe that his son

would do something so insane
as to actually admit infidelity

in a television interview.

- Diana was appalled
by what Charles had said,

and she began formulating

how she was going to hit back

with her own
television confession.

♪ ♪

- Diana was the most priceless
interview possible

in the world.

The interview was planned
for a Sunday evening,

the quietest time around
Kensington Palace.

She had told
the security people

that she was expecting
the delivery

of some new hi-fi equipment.

♪ ♪

- She was interviewed
with those big eyes

threatening tears,

and she gave the most
extraordinary performance.

- Do you think
you will ever be Queen?

- [laughs softly]
[sighs]

No, I don't, no.

- Why do you think that?

- I'd like to be
a Queen of people's hearts

in people's hearts.

- She called herself
the Queen of Hearts,

which really stuck
a knife in the Queen,

because it was saying,

"I know how to connect,
and you don't."

- I don't think many people
would want me to be Queen.

Actually,
when I say "many people,"

I mean the establishment
that I married into

because they've decided

that I'm a non-starter.

- Diana's actually speaking
about her unhappiness,

about her misery,

and Diana used that phrase

that can never be forgotten.

- Well, there were three of us
in this marriage,

so it was a bit crowded.
[laughs softly]

- And she also said Charles
was unfit to be King.

- I would think the top job,
as I call it,

would bring enormous
limitations to him,

and I don't know whether
he could adapt to that.

Hmm.

- I watched
in complete silence,

and I said, "This program
may end the monarchy,

"or it may end the BBC,
or it may end both,

"but we have absolutely
no choice but to broadcast

every single word of it."

- The most heavily hyped,
international interview

hit the air tonight.

- The night that it went out,

the streets of London
were silent.

Everybody was watching.

narrator: All over Britain,
23 million people tune in.

- The program was a difficult
one, because it dealt,

of course,
with a lot of private matters,

and to have them on television
was obviously upsetting

for the Queen.

♪ ♪

narrator: By the end of 1995,

the war between Diana
and Charles

has been raging publicly
for more than three years.

- And the Queen finally said,
"This is enough."

- Before Christmas,

Charles and Diana
simultaneously received

handwritten letters
from the Queen

saying they now had a duty
to divorce.

- "You are damaging
one another.

"You're damaging
your children.

"You are damaging the country
and the monarchy.

Stop it."

[brisk orchestral music]

- Matter of a minute,
I would've thought.

She's here now.

- The 15-year marriage

of the Prince and Princess
of Wales

was brought to a formal end
this morning.

A court in London
issued the decree

absolute finalizing
their divorce.

- The divorce of her eldest son

was obviously a bitter blow
to the Queen.

♪ ♪

- The Queen is very
family-minded,

and as a very religious
person,

she has a strong commitment
to marriage,

but equally she's wise enough
and experienced enough

to know that, you know,
marriages can go wrong.

- The Princess will continue
to be involved

in all decisions relating
to the children.

She will remain
at Kensington Palace.

- She is given a very big
divorce settlement,

but in the end, she loses
her Royal Highness title

mainly because the Queen
just doesn't feel

that she deserves it.

- But she had something
in a way

that was more powerful
at this particular moment,

which was her celebrity.

crowd: Diana!

- Her popularity grew,
after the divorce.

She was seen
as the woman wronged,

cast out of the royal family.

- But she's still
outshining them.

Every picture of her
is all over the newspapers.

Every charitable act she does
is covered in huge detail.

- She had the power to turn
the spotlight onto the causes

that she really wanted
to be involved with.

- She loved
being photographed.

She revelled in exposure.

♪ ♪

- But when you unleash
