it was mildly apocalyptic.

preexisting health conditions.

I'm just not prepared
to risk it.

I've got a very good
support network at home.

I'm very lucky to have
two partners

and we are in a thriving,

to my parents' house,

I just didn't have money
to keep up

the house we were in,
so we all had to move out.

So I had to apply
as homeless,

and I was just staying
with friends at the meantime,

trying to just like stay

found me a place.

Luckily, I was blessed enough

to have found a place
very, very quickly.

It's my first time moving out,
I've never moved out before,

with anyone,
and I've moved out by myself,

so it's definitely
been a learning experience,

to say the least.

But now I've got my own space
to do whatever I want

which accommodates me,
all of my stuff,

as well as all
of Ellie's stuff,

and so that is my drag room.

I battled with
my mental health.

It's just kind of like learning,
well, what can I do

to not lean into being
a big sad Mary today?

Most people, we all
overthink and overanalyze

certain situations,
and when you've got

so much time on your hands,

like we have in lockdown,
it's easy to really, you know,

go to a bad place.

I would be just staring
at myself a lot of the time

in the mirror, just like
finding things wrong with me,

and just really, really
getting into a weird mindset

where, like, I was starting
to like, knock my confidence.

I cry a lot, but
that isn't weakness to me.

That is... just a release
of emotions

and once they're released,
we move on.

It's just a thing that I do.

It's not weakness.
It's just... emotion.

People need...

a release.

Like that's what...

that's one of the things I enjoy
so much about doing drag,

is making people happy,
seeing people...

people see me performing,
all the other amazing people

that I perform with,

and...

People can just forget.

That's why we need
dance floors.

We need clubs, we needs bars,
we need these places

where people can escape.

Especially young queers as well
that are finding themselves.

It's so necessary.

When I first just
moved to London,

it would have been detrimental
for my mental health

because...

that's where I really found
myself.

In a club.

In a sweaty club,
I found myself.

It's hard to not...

get, um... down and
lose sight of everything

and just kind of fall in
on yourself.

That's... that's where
having friends

and being able to talk
to people really helps.

I think maybe I went
through a bit of a depression,

um, over the summer.

I literally didn't
leave my bedroom

for a couple of days.

But then those days
turned into weeks

and those weeks
turned into months.

I didn't leave the house.

Like I wasn't even
there in the room.

I'd just be staring
into space for hours on end.

I shut the world out.

Didn't want to talk to anybody.

Steve would come into
the room every morning

and he would wake me
up with a brew.

I realize how alarming
that kind of behavior is,

but at the time,
I felt it was perfectly normal.

We started going out
on the morning walks,

and... that just
really helped to

clear my mind.

This is my first walk

since lockdown started
12 weeks ago.

I've not left the house
in 12 weeks.

Thankfully, the walks allowed
me to start focusing

then on the future
and what I could do

to get myself back up
and running again

and functioning
as a human being.

So me and Steve are out
on the Common.

It feels really good.

I think it was shock.

I had this amazing
opportunity of being

on RuPaul's Drag Race
Season Two,

and that was cut short when
I was doing really well,

to then losing all of my work.

Everything felt like
it was crashing down around me

and I felt like the rug
had been pulled from under me.

And there was no floor,

and I was just falling.
That's how I felt.

Here we are on our daily stroll.

Morning walks have become
a regular occurrence now,

thanks to Steve
dragging me out of bed.

And it's really, really good

to just get out of the house.

[laughs]

There's a kind of ominous
cloud of...

worry...

dread, and fear,

because of course, overnight,

everything I'd really worked for
was just gone.

Since I've moved to London
quite self-sufficient,

I've lived here for eight years
and I've made it work, you know,

and if I'm going to be a bit
broke for a week, then whatever,

but having to ask for like
quite a big bit of money

from like family is not
really something

that I want to be doing.

I've not fully relaxed
this whole year.

I think I've always had
the feeling with Drag Race,

and also the impending
doom of the virus

and the uncertainty of job
and how disposable it was.

I know of three
queer venues

that have had to close
during this.

Since like, 2010,
we've lost 50% of venues.

And we're losing even more
because of this,

and they're safe spaces,
and they're needed,

and they're necessary,

and they need to be protected
at all costs.

I didn't get any
employment grants,

but I did get to go
on universal credit.

Thankfully.

And, um, they kept telling me
to get a real job,

and I was just like,
excuse me, this is a real job.

There's such a stigma against,
oh, don't sign on,

don't do this, don't do that.

Do you know what?
Get that stigma out the window.

We all need to do
what we need to do

to get food on our plates,

and trust me, I know about
food on a plate.

There's no shame,
that's why we pay taxes.

It's why we do everything.

During this quarantine,

I have earned no money,
I've had no work.

I've been skint.

I've written a song called
"I'm Over my Overdraft"

which I should sing
for you, but I'm not.

I'm gonna do another song.

My residencies were gone.

I had loads of fingers
in loads of pies,

and all those pies
have pissed off now.

It's about 6 A.M.

And I am currently
doing the visuals and DVM.

I'm on night shift
in my fast food restaurant.

I'm doing a trash walk
picking up rubbish.

I have been doing night shift,
day shift, morning shift,

late shift, night shift.

Before the pandemic
even hit,

there wasn't that many
opportunities for me to work

full-time in drag
up in Scotland anyways,

so I had to go out and get
my little drive-thru gig

and make as much money
as I could there.

It's all about survival
in these times.

Got to make that coin.

I'm one of the fortunate ones.

I temporarily paused a
office job to come and film,

and that job has been
a blessing.

I'm honestly just past
the point of tiredness now.

This pandemic has
literally changed

the whole landscape
of healthcare.

I'm seen people die
from the virus,

and it's been horrific.

But... to be honest with you,

it's made me really appreciate
life more than ever.

Like, I've always
appreciated life,

because I've seen
people die before.

I've seen people get through
really bad illnesses and not.

But this has just been
really different

because it's affected
the whole world.

It's, it's...

This is really rough.

Mentally,
it's mentally draining.

By my training...

I'm a mental health nurse,
so that's my background,

but during the pandemic,

I've been working so many
different environments

that I've never worked in
in my whole life

and it's sort of changed my
whole perspective on everything.

I've been picking shifts up
everywhere and anywhere

that I can do,

because it's...

It's been very demanding.

And there's not enough of us,

so if you're ever stuck
for something to do,

train yourself in healthcare,

because I don't think there's
enough people doing it.

Usually, I'm like performing
in front of loads of people

and to stop that,

and do things online,
it was weird.

I mean, it was great
that we adapted.

This pandemic has really
tested the drag community.

There were some people that
just hung up their frocks.

And there were some people
that it's made them

really, really got for it.

I was very fortunate because
fans have tipped

and that was wonderful.

Because I realized
how much support I had

as an artist.

And I felt so loved
and appreciated.

without the support of people,

a lovely support.

So today I found out
that I am

returning to doing
some regular drag gig.

I need to pay this rent!

We're now doing performances
in venues that would

originally hold 2.000 people,

and now they're holding
250 people.

When restrictions lifted,

I felt like it was my
first time on stage again,

and it was, oh, goodness me,
it felt good.

If I had to go out there
in a full hazmat suit,

I was gonna go out there in
a full hazmat suit.

I've been working,
I've been gigging,

I've been hustling,
I've been doing the thing.

I've been doing the brunches,

I've been doing
the whole rounds,

I've been doing the circuit.

If you're paying,

A lot of places survived
on brunches.

I think there's a moral issue

with the amount of

and then you expect them to

I am in such a lucky position
to be returning

to Drag Race.

And it's given me a goal
to look forward to.

The Season Two girls
have come correct.

My anxiety is
through the roof.

It's a lot more stressful
this time around,

not knowing what to expect.

In the history of Drag Race,

no one has ever had
this amount of time

to actually
get ready for the show.

There's no excuse now,

where we've been able to
practice our sewing skills,

refine our makeup,
actually hydrate those wigs.
