[Nina Simone] I think what you're trying to ask is, uh,
why am I so insistent upon...
giving out to them that Blackness,
that Black Power, that Black--
Pushing them to identify
with, uh, Black culture.
I think that is what you're asking.
I have no choice over it in the first place.
To me, we are the most beautiful creatures in the whole world;
Black people.
My job is to somehow
make them curious enough, or persuade them,
by hook or crook,
to get more aware of themselves and where they came from
and what they are into, and what is already there
and just to bring it out.
This is what compels me to compel them.
And I will do it by whatever means necessary.
Which one do you think is better?
[man] I mean, I think we could use another music run-through...
Okay.
[man] And get all the departments because...
the people who haven't seen the show,
like seen the run-through over there,
are super unclear on what the vibe is.
-What this is. -[man] Yeah.
Agreed.
I'm with you.
[man] People who have just saw it...
Then they got it. They just now getting it. Got it.
[Beyoncé] Okay, so can we see if it's a good time to do that?
[woman] They can be here til' eight.
-What time is it? -[woman] It's 6:30.
[man 2] Let's go.
-[woman 2] Go over there? -[woman 3] Yeah.
[Beyoncé] I grew up in Houston, Texas,
visiting Prairie View.
We rehearsed at TSU
for many years in Third Ward,
and I always dreamed of going to an HBCU.
My college was Destiny's Child.
My college was traveling around the world, and life was my teacher.
I wanted a Black orchestra.
I wanted the steppers, I needed the vocalists.
I wanted different characters; I didn't want us all doing the same thing.
And the amount of swag is just limitless. Like...
the things that these young people can do
with their bodies, and the music they can play, and...
the drumrolls, and the haircuts, and the bodies, and the...
It's just not right.
It's just so much damn swag.
It's just gorgeous, and it makes me proud. And, um...
I wanted every person that has ever been dismissed
because of the way they look
to feel like they were on that stage.
Killing 'em. Killing 'em.
And I want this to be, uh...
an experience where we all have growth,
we all have to push ourselves and have to dig deep inside of ourselves
to become better human beings.
And I wanna start off with a prayer.
All right.
God, thank you so much for everyone here.
Thank you for bringing all of these human beings into my life.
God, I ask that this is an experience that...
we all remember forever.
I ask that we're able to touch people and give them hope.
To make people feel beautiful, strong...
and united.
God, I ask that you just use us.
I ask that we all grow, and we all connect.
And Lord, thank you so much for choosing us.
Thank you for bringing everyone here into my life.
We give you all the praise and glory, amen.
[company] Amen.
[applause]
[Beyoncé] So, I want us to have fun
and just, we have so much to learn.
'Cause we're here to rehearse,
and eventually we'll get on that stage and just let it all go,
and feel the spirit and have us a good time.
But, right now, it's still janky,
and we got so much to learn and work out.
So I wanted us to feel each other's energy,
and dance, and scream, and holler, and hoot.
Do whatever we feel naturally.
And we're gonna build this thing together.
So let's just do it.

[Beyoncé] I was supposed to do Coachella the year prior.
But...
I got pregnant unexpectedly.
And it ended up being twins,
which was even more of a surprise.
My body went through more than I knew it could.
[baby fussing]
[Beyoncé] I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth.
I had an extremely difficult pregnancy.
I had high blood pressure,
I developed toxemia, preeclampsia,
and, in the womb,
one of my babies' heartbeat paused a few times,
so I had to get an emergency C-section.
[Toni Morrison] Home is something very peculiar.
There is a yearning in it, you know?
Something special, mystical, hopeful,
restful.
-Here we go. First combination. -[choreographer laughs]
-First... -[cheers] I been getting to.
That go:
I been getting to.
[Beyoncé] It's my first time back home,
on the stage, after giving birth.
I'm creating my own homecoming.
And it's hard.
There were days that I thought, you know, I'd never be the same.
I'd never be the same physically,
my strength and endurance would never be the same.
[man] Between SoulCycle and coming in here,
-you're losing like 1,500-2,000 calories. -[Beyoncé] Calories, yeah.
It's true. And, eventually,
I wanna be able to do SoulCycle, the stairs, and rehearse in a day.
[man] Okay. Lit. I'll be right there with you.
[Beyoncé] And you know, a lot of the choreography
is about feeling, so it's not as technical.
It's your own personality that brings it to life.
And that's hard when you don't feel like yourself.
I had to rebuild my body
from cut muscles.
It took me a while to feel confident enough to freak it,
and give it my own personality.
[inaudible]
[Beyoncé] In the beginning, it was so many muscle spasms.
Just, internally, my body was not connected.
My mind was not there.
My mind wanted to be with my children.
What people don't see is the sacrifice.
I would dance, and go off to the trailer,
and breastfeed the babies,
and the days I could, I would bring the children.
[baby giggling]
Like, it gets messy.
Like, it's this-- I'm not even joking, this fast.
Yes.
-[man] It's doable, but... -It's fast.
[Beyoncé] That's why-- That's why I said to take it out. [laughs]
-[Beyoncé] This is grounding. -[woman] Yes.
[Beyoncé] Like, no matter who you are,
-you get in here, and it's real. -[man] Uh-huh.
-[Beyoncé] Yeah. -[Beyoncé and man laugh]
[man] That's what people don't get. That's why--
[Beyoncé] That's why people don't like to rehearse.
-You gotta be humble. -[man] Uh-huh.
[Beyoncé] You gotta be willing to look awkward, and...
-you gotta study, be a student. -[man laughs]
[panting] I might...
pass out! [laughs]
[sighs]
Five, six. Five, six, let's go.
-[dancers] Hup! -[choreographer] Again.
-[dancers] Hup! -[choreographer] Now release it.
[dancers] Hup!
[choreographer] One more.
-[dancers] Hup! -[choreographer] Let's go!
Hup!
[choreographer] Well, I feel a little of the jerkiness...
is going now.
[Beyoncé] In order for me to meet my goal,
I'm limiting myself to no bread, no carbs,
no sugar, no dairy,
no meat, no fish, no alcohol.
[sighs] And I'm hungry.
Just trying to figure out how to balance being a mother of a six-year-old
and of twins that need me
and giving myself creatively
and, um, physically.
It was a lot to juggle.
It's not like before, when I could rehearse,
you know, 15 hours straight.
I have children, I have a husband. I have to take care of my body.
There she is.
Hi, my babies!
Hi, Baba! Hi, baby!
Hi, this is me!
[Beyoncé] I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could.
And I've learned a very valuable lesson--
I will never... [laughs]
...never push myself that far again.
I feel like I'm just a new--
A new woman, in a new chapter of my life,
and I'm not even trying to be who I was.
It's just so beautiful that children...
do that to you.
-You have to get three turns. -[woman] Okay, best out of three.
Okay, this is seriously a huge accomplishment.
Because I did not think I'd ever get back in my old costume,
and I'm actually in it.
And I can still move...
I still have a ways to go, but this makes me feel good,
'cause I've been sacrificing and working hard.
-Huge, huge, huge accomplishment. Yay! -[man] Ooh!
[laughs]
[man] Are you going to wear it for rehearsals?
-No, I'm not! -[man] Okay.
[woman] You're gonna go out to dinner in it?
-No. -[woman laughs]
[Beyoncé] Although, I do wanna tell-- go show Jay. It's a big deal.
[woman] Why don't you take a walk across the--
[Beyoncé] I ain't walking there. Doing too much.
[man] Hi. Can we talk to Mr. Carter, please?
[woman on phone] Of course.
[indistinct chatter on phone]
-[Jay] Yup. -I'm back in my costume.
All right!
Big deal!
-All right! -It's zipped.

It's just all a blessing.

identify with the people, identify with the culture.
And I'm just so honored to be a part of something
that he can watch, and be proud of me, and say,
"My mom was a part of that, my mom did that."
[Beyoncé] It's hard to believe that, after all these years,
I was the first African-American woman to headline Coachella.
It was important to me that everyone
that had never seen themselves represented
felt like they were on that stage with us.
As a Black woman,
I used to feel like the world wanted me to stay in my little box.
And Black women often feel underestimated.
I wanted us to be proud of not only the show, but...
the process.
Proud of the struggle.
Thankful for the beauty that comes with a painful history
and rejoice in the pain.
Rejoice in the imperfections and the wrongs that are so damn right.
And I wanted everyone to feel grateful for their curves,

thankful for their freedom.

[Beyoncé] You know, I respect things that take work.
I respect things that are built from the ground up.
You know, I'm super specific about every detail.
I personally selected each dancer,
every light, the material on the steps,
the height of the pyramid, the shape of the pyramid,
every patch was hand sewn.
Every tiny detail had an intention.
There were so many meetings with Olivier...
before he flew to Los Angeles
so we could understand, "Okay, why do we want these colors?
What do they represent?
What is the silhouette?
What is gonna look the most graphic?
How do we look united?
But how do we have these different characters
that stand out?"
It took months for us to script the show.
When you spend so many months on choreography and arrangements,
and when there are over 200 people on the stage,
you want to make sure you see everything,
and I was very adamant
that we were well rehearsed and we knew the show
front to back.
It was a lot of Steadicam,
and we did things that were very unconventional
for a festival show.
I had three soundstages.
There was one soundstage for the band,
there was one soundstage for dancing,
and there was one soundstage for my creative staff.
And I would go from one to the next.
It takes a huge team, it takes...
a village,
and I think we all worked to our limit.
In the rehearsals, I am...
directing and watching the show.
I'm in the audience and I'm able to be on the stage
and kind of see the stage at the same time.
After every run-through there's a meeting
with, you know, at least 50 people,
all of the department heads.
[Beyoncé] Not only does Derek have to record the choir,
he has to record the rumble of the structure, the stomps.
He has to record everybody's, "Hey! Ah!"
And that adds another element of the performance
that feels so good on the stage,
and it's not translating on film.
Until I see some of my notes applied,
it doesn't make sense for me to make more.
[Beyoncé] And it doesn't matter how many months we've done it,
how many times we've done it.
There are notes every time,
because there's always something that we can improve upon.
[Beyoncé] Just standing up there, and seeing all the beauty up there,
and feeling it--
It is the only way I can articulate why I'm frustrated,
because it's not translating on camera.
So my goal is simply that.
Like, it's just so everyone out there can feel what we feel.
[Beyoncé] And I really have to have dedicated people that are...
down for the cause.
[Beyoncé] Whatever it is, let us know what we can prioritize,
to try to facilitate everybody's needs
so we can be done with having to talk so much.
[coughs]
That's where I am.
It's-- We're halfway there.
We just gotta make progress faster, because we're running out of time.
