At the start of the season,

king of the Klondike,
Tony beets,

is set for his biggest
gold haul ever.

Parker Schnabel is fulfilling
a lifetime ambition

to mine his own ground

and keep every ounce of gold,

we were going into a season
mining our own ground

and didn't have
to deal with Tony.

I was confident about, like,
what we had ahead of us.

Narrator: Rick ness,

in only the second year
running his own operation,

makes the biggest gamble
of his life.

Rick: I made the decision

to move out of the Klondike
this year.

And keno is beautiful.

And just the opportunity
is there

with the big gold.

You know, it seemed dangerous,

but I had to pull the trigger
on it

and, you know, get out

before you get trampled on.

Narrator:
Then a crisis in the Klondike

changes everything.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

Parker: The problem with
these water license issues,

there's nothing you can do.

They suck.

With the way things are going
with water licenses,

I decided I was getting
out of the Klondike.

I know I'm risking...

Everything I had.

♪♪

Tell me again where we're going.

Place called keno city.

♪♪

And what does keno city
have to offer?

Keno city's got gold.

Rick: I made the decision
that I just wanted to get out

before it became a problem
for me.

I didn't want to chance it
at all,

which is why I ended up in keno.

Narrator: From quartz creek,

where he mined last season,

Rick heads 125 miles east

in search of a new claim
above keno city.

♪♪

Rick: If I'm being honest,
riding into keno with my dad

that first time, I was nervous.

I mean, the place was beautiful,

but I really didn't know
what I was getting into.

Narrator:
But before he can mine a yard,

he needs to make a deal
with claim owners

Dean and Stuart gray.

- Howdy, fellas.
- Hey, there.

Interesting place you got here.

Wow.

And our values were anywhere

from 0.3 to 0.6. Ounces an hour

at 80 to 100 yards an hour.

I mean, I wasn't too impressed
in the beginning

with the kind of gold values

the grays said
were in the ground.

Rick: Wow.

[ Laughs ] Holy [bleep]!

[ Chuckles ] No way.

What the hell.

But, you know,
then they pulled out that tin

with the big chunky gold nuggets
in it.

That'll get to anybody
right there.

If I can just go home
with one of those,

I'm gonna be happy.

Narrator: Rick agrees
to a 15% royalty rate,

50% more than he paid
in the Klondike

for the chance
of monster nuggets.

Rick: Got a place to mine.
I'm super excited.

It's gonna be a treasure hunt.

So they call this Duncan creek.

I've been calling it
the rally valley.

Yeah, I've never seen nothing
like this in my life.

We got running right away,

and that's exactly
what I needed,

because moving everything
is not cheap.

You know, I was not
gonna be in a position

that I could be
spending money on fuel,

running equipment

without gold coming in
right away.

It's pretty nice right now.

We've got a ton of pay dirt
to run.

So, we're right next
to our wash plant.

I've doubled the goal
for this year.

I want to get 2,000 ounces.

I've got to make a profit
this year.

Narrator:
After his first week of running,

Rick shuts down.

When you say, guys?

Think we're ready
for a mat pull?

Hopefully, there's something
sitting in the mats.

Narrator: To hit his
massive 2,000 ounce goal.

Rick needs gold coming in
from day one.

Huh?

Ah! Okay.
I'm starting to feel better.

The pressure seemed to just
go away at that point.

You know, we were getting

these big, you know,
nice-sized chunky nuggets.

Ooh-ah!

There's gold.

Everything I had was invested
in moving to keno,

and to be able to start
getting gold right away,

I mean, it was a...

What a relief.

All jokes aside, there could be

a [bleep] life-changing amount
of gold in that pile back there.

Really could.

New year, new beginnings.

Pretty pumped for it, actually.

Narrator: At Indian river,
the beets family

starts the season
ahead of the game,

sluicing 100 yards
of gold-rich pay dirt an hour.

♪♪

Minnie: This could
be the end of us.

I don't know what's happening.

Gotta shut it down.

We don't have a water license.

So, what does that mean
for the season, then?

Narrator: With no water license,

Tony can't mine any
of his Indian river claims.

♪♪

Hey, doing alright?

You wanted us to come up
with a plan

for what the [bleep] to do,
right?

Kevin: Cool.

What about the stuff we brushed
by the airstrip?

Narrator: Kevin wants
to mine a 100-acre cut

that could contain $3 million
of gold.

Four years.

It's good till February 4, '23.

But it's on the little flake.

Isn't that Parker?

Yes, it is.

Narrator: The beets hopes
of mining on Indian river

now depend on Parker Schnabel

sharing his water license.

Parker was 17

when he first got a foothold
in the Klondike,

leasing land from Tony beets.

But it came at a cost.

Now the tables are turned.

Parker: Not too bad.

Give me one good reason
not to tell you

to go [bleep] yourself.

I'd rather keep Tony happy
than upsetting him...

Just purely politics.

I can give a [bleep]
how he feels.

It's just really frustrating
to deal with.

Narrator:
To rescue his mining season,

Tony must persuade Parker

to share his water license.

Well, it appears the shoe's
on the other hoof.

I'm gonna be calling in a favor
one of these days.

And so, you know, right now,
we might not need anything,

but down the road here
this season,

I very well could.

And so I'm fine with it.

What I don't want is,
I don't want to be liable

for any messes you make.

Parker: I don't want to
have Tony as an enemy

any more than I already do.

And so initially
I totally agreed to let him,

you know,
go under our license and mine.

I didn't realize
how much liability

I was opening myself up to
by doing that.

Parker: If anything goes wrong,
it's our name on the license.

What if somebody gets hurt?

You're not gonna sign this,
are you?

I ain't signing it.

Narrator: With Parker refusing
to sign the agreement,

Tony's forced
to shut down the airstrip

and leave the Indian river.

First of all,
I'd like to thank you all

for coming this season.

Narrator: At Indian river,

Parker Schnabel's mission

is to mind his own
royalty-free ground

with enough pay dirt
to last three years.

Going into the season,
I felt pretty pumped

about, like, the prospect

of mining our own ground.

At the same time,
I was pretty nervous.

Narrator:
But the water license crisis

hits Parker hard.

The good news is,
we're gonna be mining here

on a piece of ground we bought
a couple of years ago.

The bad news is,

we're having massive
permitting issues out here,

this piece of ground
that we bought

has one year left...

June 1st, 2020, it's up.

So, we have to mine

the whole piece of ground out
this season.

The crew didn't have
the particularly best reaction.

The whole thing.

Dean: This is three years'
worth of work.

It's a lot of dirt.

We'll never do it.

It's nuts.

Dean was...

I wouldn't say irate,

but he wasn't too happy.

Definitely not the reaction

I had hoped for.

We're gonna wear
everybody out and break

every piece of equipment
we've got trying to do this.

Narrator:
Parker wants to mine an area

the size of 50 city blocks,

foreman Dean Tosczak must
make it happen in one year,

or Parker could end up leaving

millions of dollars of gold
in the ground.

Dean's first big task
was getting a pad

for the wash plant built.

I really needed Dean to step up.

Yeah, that didn't go
particularly well.

♪♪

It's about time
we got a sluicing.

But I've been saying that
for two [bleep] weeks.

Narrator: Three weeks
into the season,

Dean has finally built
a pad for big red.

I've been building berms
and settling ponds

for over 30 years.

I think this might end up being
the best pad I ever built.

Before bringing in big red,

Parker and Dean Mark out where
to put the plant.

You got 40.

We're at 40 feet here,
and at 52 feet,

we need to be 16 feet wide,

and Doumitt needs
to be able to do cleanups.

It was a frustrating thing,

the whole situation
with the pad that Dean built.

It wasn't big enough.

Can can you guys
all [bleep] back off?

That's when I knew...

Like, this was gonna
work out with Dean and I,

I'll meet you back in my office.

I asked Dean to come
see me in my office

after the pad was too small,

and it was obviously,

like, at a state

where things needed to change.

I just wanted to talk to you.

I asked you to come down
to the office, but...

Okay.

Alright.

Dean never gave me or himself

the chance to have
that conversation,

he never did come
into my office.

Hey, Dean.

That's your last paycheck.

I have a lot of respect
for the man.

He is very smart,

and he helped us out at a time
when we really needed it.

And for that,
I will always owe him.

I wish things would have
gone differently,

but that's life.

Right?

Narrator: Weeks behind schedule

and with no foreman,

Parker comes up
with a radical solution.

What I'd really like to do is
for you guys to share the role.

Ultimately,
it came down to a situation

where I just really needed

some people that I trusted
at the helm,

and I trust Mitch and Brennan.

I trust them with my life.

So, basically,
what you're asking

is to have some
co-foremans then.

Yeah,

when Dean left,

you guys are already
doing the job

of filling in that gap
that got left.

That foreman role...
The life span of someone there

is about, like, a world war ii
flamethrower operator.

And not only was
everybody scared

of probably getting
offered the job,

I was scared to offer it
to anybody.

So I've yet to hear it.

Yes or no?

I don't work it
in the kill zone.

Yeah, it seems like
being a foreman around here

has been like
a death row sentence.

Yeah.
And neither of us want that.

So I won't take any offense
if you go, "hey",

we need you to go back to doing
what you were doing

before we got
somebody else in here now.

If you're not happy,
then I'd like to know,

because things are
going great right now.

Mitch and Brennan
being co-foreman,

covered all the bases...

Brennan knowing

and being pretty confident
on the dirt moving side

and Mitch really knowing

the mechanical side.

But the real risk is that...

If they didn't perform,

then you risk losing

your two top-producing guys.

Mitch: Co-foreman
sounds super weak,

I think we need
to change it from bro-forman.

[ Both laugh ]

Parker: With Mitch and Brennan,
I definitely felt like

we're gonna get through
all that dirt.

Narrator: But mining all
this ground in one season

proves a bigger challenge
than any of them could know.

Rick: I feel really lucky
to have found this new spot

surrounded by these mountains.

We're trying to double
the gold this year.

Narrator: Rick is risking it all

in the mountains
outside keno city.

At Duncan creek,

his crew is running 100 yards
of pay dirt an hour

and catching fine gold.

Yeah, man,
we're washing rocks here,

which means there's gold
in the box.

Narrator: But Rick's
got bigger plans,

my dad's flying all the way here
from Michigan on this airplane.

I wanted help to find
those nuggets

that, you know, Stuart and Dean
had showed me in the beginning,

and the only way to do it
was from above.

Narrator: To help them
find the big gold

and hit his 2,000 ounce
season goal,

Rick's persuaded his dad

to make the 2,000 mile journey

in his Piper super car.

Rick: He actually built
that airplane himself.

I don't know where he found
the Patience to do that.

He didn't have that with me
growing up,

that's for sure.

I really hope my runway
doesn't kill my dad.

[ Laughs ]

Narrator: To help Rick
find the big nuggets

and boost his gold total,

his dad has flown

over 2,000 miles

in his light aircraft.

Holy [bleep]!

That ain't the [bleep] runway!

I thought for sure
you would have

a lot nicer strip than that.

Well, the funny thing was,
my dad got out,

and after a minute
of calming down,

he's like, "I don't want anybody
to ever see that landing,"

and I was like, "oh, dad."

I don't know how
to tell you this,

but they're gonna show that
so many times.

[ Laughs ]

[ Laughs ]

We're gonna fire up.

Rick: Cool.

The big gold that
we're looking for

is gonna be up one
of these tributaries.

We did quite a bit
of flying around

and looking for traces

of, you know,
old mining and stuff.

I think below us,
there's some kind of old cabin.

Oh, yeah?

And we did. We saw a cabin.

And that's usually
a pretty good sign.

So once we establish where
that cabin was from the air,

we landed.

- There she is.
- Holy [bleep].

We decided to poke around

because everything
had been overgrown,

and it's just like,
you really aren't gonna know

until you dig around a bit,
you know?

Holy [bleep].
There's an old gold pan in here.

No kidding.

Wow.

I'll be damned.

That's [bleep] cool.

Someone spent enough time here,

found enough gold
to justify building the cabin.

It's probably a pretty
good spot to start.

Narrator: The old miner's cabin

should point Rick
to nugget-rich ground.

We decided that it was worth it
to get a machine in there.

Let's just do a little testing.

Let's clear a little spot

and got a nice creek here
to pan in.

So, we scratched around a bit,

found some stuff that
looked promising,

panned it.

I'm gonna go straight
to the creek.

♪♪

Big Rick: Whoa, whoa, whoa.

What is that?

Rick: Whoa.

What the hell.

That's incredible.

Yeah, there's a nice,
big piece of gold in there,

and it wasn't far
from the surface,

so it looked very promising.

♪♪

Narrator: But with only
80 ounces mined so far,

Rick needs to make more gold

before he can move
into the hills

to hunt for big nuggets.

He now needs to upgrade
his wash plant

to hit his 2,000 ounce goal.

So, in the background,

we're running dirt
with Troy's wash plant,

and, you know, we ain't gonna
get to a 2,000-ounce goal.

So, to run more dirt,

you're just gonna need
a bigger wash plant.

So I reached out
to Freddy dodge.

There it is, Rick.

Narrator: Rick heads to Colorado
in search of a new wash plant.

I was pretty specific with
Freddy about what I wanted.

You know, I wanted to be
pushing 300 yards an hour.

Narrator: And buys monster red,

a wash plant capable
of running three times

more gold-rich pay

than his current setup.

Whoo!

Fire it up!

♪♪

Man: Yeah.

Rick: I've got a half
a million dollars

in this wash plant...

Playtime's over.

Business time starts now.

Narrator: With $300,000
still owed on the plant,

Rick needs monster red
to deliver.

Rick: Buying that new wash plant
took all the gold that I had.

That's just more pressure
for me.

And I really had to scramble
to get the gold to pay it off.

Could you throw two buckets
into the feeder,

and then sit there.

Narrator: Three years ago,

Tony set aside
a massive gold-rich claim

on top of paradise hill.

After being kicked out
of Indian river,

now it's time to cash in
on the bonanza he banked.

Narrator: Youngest son Mike runs
a 300-yard-an-hour Trommel

on gold-rich ground

on top of the hill.

Daughter Monica is looking

for a rich pay streak

down on hunker creek.

Monica: Hunker cut has always

been one of Tony's,
like, a dream spot.

It's always good
to start sluicing.

Hopefully,
we'll be getting gold.

Narrator: Tony has a hunch
this could be good ground.

- Geronimo!
- Oh [bleep]!

I saw my life flash
before my eyes right there.

Kevin: Yeah.

- Yeah.
- I'm game.

Kevin: That's gold.
Look at that.

Narrator: The old mine shaft
goes down over 40 feet...

A sure sign
there's gold-rich pay

running deep
into Kevin's ground.

the old timers left behind,

Kevin brings in the shaker deck

and fires it up.

Let's fire it up.

With all three kids running,

Tony is set to salvage

his disastrous season.

Last season,

Parker paid Tony beets a royalty

to mine the last cut.

I got to do something
about the pay we left in here.

There could be a thousand ounces
in here.

This year, he fires up
Sluicifer again,

chasing the last of the gold,

eventually getting
over 1,400 ounces.

I think it's safe to say that
cut was definitely not done.

- So, what's that? 685?
- Yes.

- In a week.
- In a week.

That's a pretty
[Bleep] good week.

Narrator:
But as the season wears on,

Parker has a change of plan.

There was like six weeks
left in the season.

And we had like 40% or something
of the area

that we want to mine still
in mind.

Narrator: Parker decides
he has only one hope

of mining all his ground before
the water license expires.

Brings Sluicifer back
from the last cut.

Nice job, buddy.

Parker: Seeing those
two wash plants

set up side by side,

chewing through
500 yards an hour,

I was feeling pretty good

about that.

But keeping them fed

became quite the mammoth task.

You've just got to put
everybody you can in a truck

and do whatever you can
to keep up.

Yeah, it's going to take
everything we got

to keep up with
these two plants.

♪♪

Brennan: Parker just
radioed me and said

I have to make sure
I haul enough pay down

to both those wash plants to run
for 24 hours straight.

Let's go, go, go, go, go.

To try and keep
these plants running.

♪♪

Every day, co-foreman
Mitch and Brennan

have to feed the plants

with 400 loads of gold-rich pay.

♪♪

Dennis: It's gonna be
a long end of the season

to get all this pay dirt out,

but Parker's doing the payin',
so he'll do the sayin', I guess.

[ Horn blares ]

Who the [bleep] is that?

[ Metal creaks ]

Hey! Hey! Hey!

Mitch: Dennis!

♪♪

Mitch: Dennis!

♪♪

Narrator: Racing to get
all the gold out

before the end of the season...

...Parker's crew go
a step too far.

Parker:
Dennis had a really close call

in rock truck, actually,

probably the closest call
we had all year,

see something new every day.

You want to be as productive
as you can,

but ultimately, it has
to get done safely.

There she comes!

None of this is worth
people getting seriously hurt.

About the only way to get
through all that ground

was keeping those
two wash plants

fed and running 24/7.

♪♪

Narrator: At Duncan creek.

Rick is running monster red
at 300 yards an hour,

but with six weeks
left of his season,

Rick's pulled in
just 265 ounces.

Despite running flat out,

the gold isn't improving

and running monster red

is costing Rick more money

than he's bringing in.

I was going farther in the red
just by running the plant.

You know,
the numbers just weren't there.

It's [bleep].

We're grinding away
on this mediocre dirt.

♪♪

Just cannot afford to throw
more money at something

that just hasn't been
paying back all season.

With how bad the ground was,

I was losing money
by running that.

That goes home with me.

You know what I mean?

I've got bills at home

that I have because
of trying to mine,

and I thought that might
be the end right there.

Fred: Hey, Rick.
You got a moment?

Gene and myself, we have a plan.

Gene and Freddy decided to
get a little more scientific

with the dirt we were running.

What we're looking for
is stuff like this.

You see all the flat rocks
are laying horizontal.

Well, this has been
mildly reworked by water.

So what that does is
reconcentrate some material.

It enriches it.

It's a little bit like
nature's sluice box.

So, this is the type of
material we need to test.

Yep. So if I can just run that

for an hour,
do a clean up on it,

and see what kind of numbers
come out of it.

After this one-hour test,

if there's not
a quarter ounce of gold

in each one
of these sluice runs.

I'm shutting them down.
I'm going home.

It's as simple as that.

One hour. Exactly one hour.

300 yards.

Rick: There's a ton
on the line for me,

you know, at that point,
where I'm trying to figure out

what's the real
absolute ramifications

of, you know, losing everything.

And it's scary.

Freddy: Oh!

than you've been doing

a [bleep] of a lot better.

At this point,
if we could be pulling

[bleep] 2 ounces an hour...

...change a lot of things.

just a little bit.

and, you know,

probably sending
all my guys home

It went from that to, hey,
we can make this profitable,

and it really
turned things around.

with their own operations

working hard to save

his mining empire.

But after three weeks
of running,

Kevin's operation struggles.

The stuff we're running
has a lot of Clay in it.

In a last ditch attempt

to save Kevin's operation,

Tony heads out
to search for pay dirt

that his shaker deck
can handle in the gully cut.

Tony, you sunk her good, eh?

[ Laughter ]

Tony's plan...

Use the 18-ton Oshkosh

with its two 27 1/2 ton winches

to pull the excavator free.

Narrator:
After Tony's epic fail,

daughter Monica takes over

and brings in friend Lisa Bigras

in the d10 dozer.

All you needed was

Narrator: In a desperate attempt
to keep his operation going,

Kevin runs new pay
from the gully cut

hoping for a big gold haul.

It's been a [bleep]
this year for me.

This is it, man.
This is the final push.

Narrator: At Duncan creek,

Rick has been running
high-grade pay for five weeks.

So with high-grading the pay
like we did,

that went from, "we're done
because this is losing money"

to, "okay, we can keep going

because this is actually
profitable again."

Unfortunately, as you can see,
my pay pile is kind of low.

Narrator: But running
300 yards an hour,

Rick gets through
the Duncan creek pay

faster than expected.

But it's been a long season
for those guys

that have not seen
very good gold.

I certainly didn't come here
to fail,

and if I dare try and clean it
any more than this,

nothing's left in here.

Narrator: Gene scrapes
the last of the pay.

We scraped off
as good as you can.

- Nothing's left.
- Are you serious?

We've got nothing else to run?

We ran out of it a lot quicker
because there was a lot less,

which is fine because
we don't want to be

running that other junk anyways.

But, you know, we ran out,

and we still weren't
at the break-even point.

There's no other ground to run.

We're done at Duncan creek.

We're gonna shut down.
