The boy took to the bottle
right away.

The female was almost
the exact opposite.

And so the decision was made to
transport her to the Bronx zoo.

In order to get her to spend
more time with enrichment items,

It's important to find something
a little bit more challenging

And puzzling for them.

We have a whole new
generation of geladas

growing up here
at the Bronx zoo right now.

I will never lose
that amazement

in watching how quickly
primate babies develop.

If you ask a child
to draw a picture of a zoo,

Chances are they'll draw
an animal behind bars.

We've got to take that image
and change it.

I really enjoy this.

It strengthens the bond
that we have with these guys.

It's not enough
to keep animals in exhibits

just for people to look at.

There has to be
a higher purpose.

And for us, it's conservation
of species in the wild.

This morning, Jim, Don, Kevin
and I are going to be heading

to a private residence
where we were asked

by New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation

to assist them with the
confiscation of venomous snakes.

D.E.C. Is typically not equipped

to deal with
exotic venomous reptiles.

So we're gonna come
and remove the snakes

and bring them back to the zoo.

Quiet, little dead-end road.

We had a gentleman who's bit
by a venomous snake

Over the weekend.

So that alerted us
to the situation.

After speaking with him,
we found out that he had

A lot more snakes in his home.

In the state of New York,

You are not allowed to possess
any venomous snakes

Unless you have a license
to be an exhibitor

Or for educational purposes.

A situation like this
is very dangerous.

When you're in
a residential neighborhood

and you've got over 100 venomous
snakes in your basement,

We take that very seriously.

When we got the call
last night,

We were told that there was
approximately 50 snakes.

Now, when we got here
on site today,

We heard that there may be
at least twice that many.

Well, we've got a couple of
heavy-duty locking trash cans

and a couple of 5-gallon buckets
with locking lids

To move snakes around
if we need to.

We're not allowed
to bring cameras in.

It's nice to be able
to rely on resources

Like the Bronx zoo.

Their specialists are going
to be handling the snakes,

Preparing the snakes
for transport,

and taking them
to a safe location.

First look at the snakes,

They seem to be
in pretty decent condition.

You can't help but be
kind of overwhelmed

When you go into a house
and you see virtually

Every space is filled
with snakes from wall to wall.

This isn't something
that we do regularly.

Snake bites for a hiker
on the mountain...

That's typical for us.

Rare, you know, exotic
venomous snakes

Is not a typical response
for us.

We've managed to safely pack up
all the snakes,

So we've got to take them
back to the zoo.

Let's start loading.

These are exotic species.

They're very interesting
species, some of them.

There are some species
that are less common...

Mang pit vipers,
hagen's pit vipers,

Taiwanese mountain vipers.

This is crazy.

Private people really
shouldn't be housing venomous snakes.

Aside from the issues
of legality

Is just a logistical issue

Of providing the care
that these animals need.

I think that looks good.
Yeah, looks great.

We've been here
about seven hours.

It's been a long day.

We're gonna take them
all back to the Bronx zoo,

and we're gonna set them up
in one of the quarantine rooms

At the health center.

And then we have to wait till
the court gives us custody,

and then we can help place them.

We had two baby pronghorn
that were born here

At the queens zoo,
a male and a female.

The male is still being
bottle-fed.

I'm gonna play mama to him,
and we'll see what happens.

Knock, knock.

Am I disturbing you?

Come on.

Come along.

We hand-rear our pronghorn fawns

Because they can be flighty
and very difficult

To manage as they mature.

Are you coming?
That a boy!

What are you doing?
Are you nervous?

By hand-rearing them,

They become accustomed
to the zookeepers

So that we can provide them
with quality care

Throughout their life.

Oh, you're hungry, huh?

That a boy.

He's eating real well.

He's eating about
16 ounces every day.

Four bottles.

He's gaining weight every day.

Take a break. Got to give you
a break every once in awhile.

Come.

The bottle feeding doesn't
take very long,

But after that, you need to
spend a lot of time with him

To make sure he's getting
exercise and socialization.

They're a very social animal.
They're a herd animal.

We took them away
from their herd

in ordered to hand-rear them.

We as zookeepers take the place
of their herd.

Ready?

As their surrogate mother,
we provide them with food,

We nurse them out of bottles,
we give them protection,

Anything that the babies might
need so that they can thrive

and grow up to be
happy and healthy pronghorn.

Even though I'm not a pronghorn,
he doesn't know that.

So I guess I'm technically
part of his herd.

At the queens zoo,
one of the iconic species

that we have is the pronghorn.

They're found all throughout
the western plains,

From Mexico
all the way up into Montana.

They have huge eyes

That allow them to see
almost 320 degrees around them,

and they can run up to
50, 55 miles per hour.

With the pronghorn fawns,

The boy took to the bottle
right away,

and he's doing great.

The female is almost
the exact opposite.

Her condition was
pretty critical,

and the decision was made to
transport her to the Bronx zoo.

I need you to
start some iso.

We've just brought
a pronghorn Fawn

from the queens zoo,
and she's in really bad shape.

She is weak, and she has
really low blood sugar.

Hold her.

In her case, we have to
put a feeding tube

Surgically into her stomach

Because pronghorn stomachs
are really complicated.

- Let's intubate.
- Yeah.

They have different parts
to their stomach.

And if she doesn't suckle, then
the milk goes to the wrong spot.

We have to put the feeding tube
in through the side of her body

So the milk goes directly
to where it needs to go

So she can absorb that nutrition
and become stronger.

All right,
let's hook her up.

Because this baby is
in such critical condition,

She's a high risk
for anesthesia.

She could have a lot
of complications

and she could not wake up
from the procedure.

But if we don't do
the procedure,

She's not gonna survive.

...pretty much damaged.

The procedure went well.

So from now on, we'll be giving
her milk through the tube

Just so she gets that
directly into her stomach.

Congrats, you just got
your first meal.

The pronghorn is not
fully stable,

But we'll know she's
in the clear

If she is nursing from a bottle
really well,

She stays alert,
she's really active.

But it'll be a couple weeks

Until we can say
she's in the clear.

The goal today is gonna be
to try and get everybody

into the new containers.

People usually use these
to pack their lunch,

Where now they're
packed with snakes.

Look at these things.

Yesterday, we assisted

The New York department
of environmental conservation

in a confiscation.

About 157 snakes were seized
from a private residence.

We've now tripled our
venomous-snake collection.

So, the goal today is gonna be
to try and get everybody

into the new containers.

We don't know his collection's
history, but anything new,

even if we were getting it
from another zoo,

We would put into quarantine to
keep it away from our animals.

It's just a standard safeguard
to make sure we don't bring in

any viral disease
or other sort of thing.

Ok, so, let's get started.

- You ready?

Okay, I'm opening.

All right, lifting.

Really beautiful
insularis.

We have two
east African gaboons.

Little female.

That's a pretty snake.
I like that.

Yeah.

Some are more common
than others.

Look at these things.

The rare Asian pit vipers
come from parts of the world

Where it's not easy to access.

That is a big
rhino viper.

This is super cool.

I mean, it's exciting to see,
like, so many different species

in the same room.

It's crazy this was
in somebody's house,

But these snakes
are pretty awesome.

That one is amazing.

- That is amazing.
- Super variable.

Whenever we remove the tapes,
we had to be super careful

'cause the lids do
come off fairly easy.

I mean, people usually use these
to pack their lunch,

where now they're
packed with snakes.

This is a big task to care
for this large of a collection.

I mean, they're venomous snakes.
That's inherently a challenge.

You have to be careful what
you're doing with these animals.

Kelvin, we'll do
this one next.

Only the reptile department
is currently trained

For caring
for the venomous collection.

And whenever we're working
this room,

We have to have two people.

But of course,
we do maintain antivenin on-site

Just in case there is
some unforeseen accident

That leads to a bite.

There's so many babies.

Geez.

Given the number
of new babies we have,

We assume this individual
was breeding these snakes

For sale to the private sector.

Off-site quarantine.

People who are
serious about snakes

Oftentimes fall into this trap

Where they actually
become hoarders.

They breed them, they sell them,
and you hit this tipping point

where all of a sudden,
you can't manage them properly.

It's a huge task ahead.

We've got to get them
all weighed, I.D.'d,

and then start day-to-day
husbandry of feeding

and watering and cleaning.

It just takes
an enormous amount of time.

And so the goal, if they're
donated to us by D.E.C.,

will be to disperse the main
part of this collection

to other zoos
as soon as possible.

Hi, Vanessa.

Like most pigs,

The red river hogs
are very intelligent.

They seem to enjoy
challenging puzzles or training.

They're always ready to learn
something new, it seems.

We tend to keep it in flakes
like that.

The hogs enjoy breaking up
the flakes on their own.

This is bucharo,
the red river hog.

He's one of two males
that we have here.

It can be very exciting
to try to come up with new ways

to make sure that they're always
being mentally stimulated,

and it can be very challenging
because I always feel like

they're almost
one step ahead of us.

The hogs are a lot of fun
to watch

because they're very curious.

This is Hampton and Topaz.

They like to supervise whatever
is going on in the barn.

They should be on exhibit,
but it's much more exciting

to watch whatever
the zookeeper is doing.

Wow!

Red river hogs
are a type of suid.

They belong to the pig family,

and they're found
in forested areas

throughout the
Central African rainforest.

Pigs in general learn behaviors
very quickly.

When you watch them, you'll see
them using their snouts.

They're smelling for food,
they're moving the soil around,

and basically, they're using it

as a tool to interact
with the environment.

Keepers really work to encourage
the behaviors that they see.

So if animals
are naturally curious

and investigating
their environment,

we always find ways
to then enhance that.

Hi, Nessie pig.

You want to have
some fun?

We're going to give Vanessa some
quick, easy enrichment today,

So we'll smear some of this
peanut butter inside the box,

and we'll sprinkle
some parrot mix into it,

Kind of keeps it
nice and fun.

She has to kind of scrape
that off and tear the box up.

She absolutely loves
peanut butter,

Although I don't think
that's a fair Gauge

because I'm pretty sure
she likes anything.

Most of the enrichment we use
for the red river hogs

is food-based.

They're very
food-motivated creatures,

as one would probably assume,
considering they're hogs.

Okay.

Something like this,
although it seems fun for her

and enriching,

It won't keep her busy
for very long.

So we'll see what she thinks.

First thing she always does
when exploring something new

is she uses her snout to, like,

nose it and sniff it
and see what's going on.

See, the good stuff
is on the inside.

In order to get her to spend
more time with enrichment items,

it's important to find something
a little bit more challenging

and puzzling for them.

That's why we're having
the shops build

a more engaging enrichment item.

Gore... he definitely is the one

that's watching everything
all the time.

He seems like
he's kind of patrolling.

Geladas are very temperamental.

If they notice
any little change,

They will be patrolling
for a little while.

It just might be someone
that looks out of place.

Someone might have
a large hat on.

It could be anything that is
slightly distracting.

Gore is the dominant male
of our large family group.

Last year,
Gore had some health issues.

A cardiac device
had been implanted

So that we can monitor
any possible heart issues.

We were concerned a little bit
because this could

affect breeding.

- Let's glue him up.
- Perfect.

But lately,
he was breeding successfully.

He has sired a brand new baby.

There you can see
little baby eshie

Riding on the back.

I will never lose that amazement

in watching how quickly
primate babies develop.

Eshie has just been
a model student.

She's just ahead of the curve
in every way.

I think that speaks a lot
to Gemma's mothering.

Gemma is our dominant female.
This is not her first baby.

She's had a few.
And I think she's just a pro.

Baby geladas don't so much walk
as they hop and flop.

I sometimes walk in
and they'll be doing headstands.

They love somersaults.

Very energetic.

We have a whole new generation
of geladas growing up here

at the Bronx zoo right now.

The fact that we have geladas
at every age level

for people to see,
I feel is very important.

The pronghorn has been
at the health center

Almost two weeks now.

And she came in
very compromised.

But she's doing much better.

The feeding tube is now out,
and it's our job to get her

Used to nursing from a bottle.

what's this?

We're all cautiously optimistic
about how she's doing.

Every baby feeds
a little bit differently.

They tell us what works,
and we just try to keep up.

She told us she liked
being fed in the dark.

It's just her little quirk.

Today, we're gonna give
the pronghorn access

to the outside enclosure
in the barn.

Oh, oh, okay, okay, okay.

hi, hi, hi.

Did you want
to go in there?

Oh, what a good girl!

Good job. Oh, so good!

Now you can see why she needs
supervised outdoor time.

Pronghorns run really fast.

She has to build up the muscle
to be able to do that.

That was very uncoordinated,
but good practice.

I don't want her
to get startled.

I want her to have a positive
experience with being outside

Because we want her to become
more comfortable with noises

That might startle her.

Good girl!

She's gonna have to get used to
planes if she lives in queens.

She's still very picky
about her bottle.

But honestly, if she chooses to
eat the hay, that's way better!

Hay is better!

It's really important that
we get her back with her brother

So that she gets some more cues

On pronghorn behaviors
that I can't emulate.

That was good.

Every single day we come in,

We check to make sure that
everybody is alive and healthy,

We check to make sure
that everybody has water,

and we also make sure
that everybody is fed.

These are all some of the newer
babies that were born, right?

There's new babies in there,
some brand-new babies in here.

These are
mangrove pit vipers.

They were born yesterday.

A lot of the snakes
arrived gravid, or pregnant,

and they've been giving birth.

So we were at 157 snakes,

and now we have
about 190 snakes.

Venomous snakes
are born venomous,

and they are just as toxic
as their parents.

So, today it looks like

I'm feeding the
red-tailed bamboo pit vipers.

These are just baby mice.
Give them these.

They will often bite like that
and then release,

and you have to wait for them
to actually bite and hold.

Flat-nosed pit viper.

The adults are mostly
eating pretty well.

The babies can be
a bit more difficult.

So close.

I'm gonna call it on him
for right now.

Been here over an hour.

This is the second snake
I've tried to feed today.

And there's like
26 more up there.

How's this working out
over here... this setup?

Now that we've got
the rack system,

100 percent better.

We've lost a total
of four adults,

Two that were
obviously sick

and then two that we didn't
know anything was wrong.

We've had four deaths,

and we've submitted
those snakes for necropsy,

and hopefully that'll reveal
cause of death.

This is another side
of the exotic pet trade

That people don't think about.

You have no control over what
these animals are exposed to

When they're sold in the trade,

When they go from one person
to another.

We've been in
regular contact with D.E.C.

If they say he gets
the snakes back, that's fine.

We'll pack everything up
and send it back.

On the other hand,
if it's a forfeiture,

that goal would be
to disperse the snakes

as quickly as possible
to other institutions

To take the burden off of us.

My main concern
is for the animals.

However it's resolved,

I just hope
the animals fare well.

We're making
an enrichment device

We want to try to accomplish
something that spins

and that we can fill with treats

to give them something
to play with,

Something different,
something new.

We're gonna mount it
wherever the keepers want.

The hogs will be able
to spin this,

and the food, treats, whatever
we put in there, will fall out.

So the only thing we have left
is just to drill a bunch

of different-size holes in it,
and that's it.

Try it out, see how it works.

Got stuff coming out.

So, the original picture of this

Was actually mocked up
out of wood.

So these guys
would have ate the wood.

We're hoping that the plastic
will deter them

and they'll just stick
to the treats.

Who knows?
We'll see what happens.

And if they don't like it,

We'll change it and make it
out of something else.

Red river hogs
tend to use their snouts

For manipulating most
of their environment.

It's kind of how
they move things around.

She's super strong.

But she might
not realize it spins.

So, she's using her
mouth to rotate the pvc bar.

And so then the parrot mix
is falling through the holes.

The treats then
fall into the bedding,

and then she could forage
for them.

Again, that's to mimic
that natural foraging behavior.

My favorite part of giving them
new enrichment

is watching them
try to figure it out.

She's trying to think
through it,

See what the best way is
to manipulate the toy

So that she can get
the treats that are inside.

Looks like Vanessa's having
a pretty good time.

Anything involving food
is a good time.

Look.

It says "ostrich"
right there.

We got test results back

from the university of Florida
molecular lab,

and this particular virus
turned out to be nidovirus.

Okay.

Nidovirus is a viral disease

That causes respiratory problems
in snakes.

There's no cure. You can't
rid them of the disease.

And eventually, the virus
results in death to the snakes.

I need another set
of these.

We have to test the rest of
the confiscated snakes.

We don't know
who's infected or who's not.

And that's a problem
in the exotic-pet trade.

There is no monitoring
of these animals.

We have to do diagnostics
on a lot of snakes.

We have about 180 in the room,

and if they're negative
and don't have the virus,

we would isolate them further.

Animals that are positive would
remain in the existing room

and possibly be euthanized.

All right,
what are we starting with?

We'll do these two
gaboons to get them out of the way.

Put some pressure on it so it
can't do that turnaround thing.

You got it?

In order to pull samples
for this viral testing,

We have to swab the oral cavity
back in the esophagus.

Okay, got it.

- Good?
- Yep.

We'll send the samples
to the university of Florida,

and we're hoping they can
give us test results

Within a couple of weeks' time.

Today, we're gonna go feed
the male baby pronghorn.

And every day is a
new adventure with this baby.

Starts every morning at 6:30.

We come in.
We give him his first bottle.

Right now, he's eating about
25 ounces a day.

He eats four
or five times a day.

He needs a lot of attention.
He needs a lot of care.

I guess it's just like
raising a kid.

You know, you want to see it
just be healthy and happy.

That's it. No more.

Clean-plate club, huh?

He is thriving.

Hopefully, within the next week
or so, we'll actually be able

to get him on exhibit
so that he can run around

and do the things
a normal pronghorn would do.

With any luck,
his sister will be back.

So hopefully, maybe we can put
the two of them out there

To do the same thing.

The plan for
feeding the pronghorn

is to get her
used to you,

make her comfortable
with you feeding her.

And I want to stay as much
out of the picture as possible.

Because the pronghorn that
we have here has been so picky,

It's really important
that we integrate Donna

from the Queens Zoo
as one of the feeders

while the pronghorn is still
here at the health center.

This way, we're not changing
too many things at once

When she goes back
to the Queens Zoo.

So, I now have to take
whatever Lisa was doing before

and whoever else
was feeding her,

Take all that information
and try and incorporate it

into what I'm gonna do,

Because everybody has a
different technique

With the bottle.

Whenever you're ready.

If I start sounding like I'm
stressed, she picks up on that

and she wants nothing
to do with me,

So I just have to keep it nice
and light and airy

Until she eventually comes
across and trusts me, you know.

Yeah,
she did really well.

The pronghorn
has done unbelievably well.

She's running around.

She's doing little
hippity-hop things,

All normal pronghorn things,
which is fantastic,

Which means she needs
more space.

So she needs to go back
to the Queens Zoo.

So it's amazing that she's going
back to be with her brother.

They're huge.
Oh, my gosh.

Into the hot zone.

Wow.

And really, they look
and act normal...

till they don't,
you know.

So, the test results are back,

and nearly 3/4 of
the snakes tested

were positive for nidovirus.

You know, it's kind of
heartbreaking

to put in all that effort

and then find out
that a lot of the snakes

are gonna be difficult to place

or that they may
even be euthanized.

This issue might have
started with one animal

That the individual
brought into his collection

That was carrying the nidovirus.

That could have exposed

the rest of his healthy
collection to this.

Well, it's certainly not
the ending we were hoping for.

Yeah, yeah,
absolutely.

The good thing is that there's
a percentage of the animals

that we were able to clear,

and other zoos
stepped up to take them

and incorporate them
into their breeding programs.

And there's animals
that we were interested in

That we'll be able to keep.

Out of all the snakes that we
got in this confiscation,

it looks like we're gonna keep
13 here at the Bronx zoo.

So, the mang vipers
tested negative?

Mangs are
a negative, yeah.

That was lucky.

Yeah.

The mangs, of course,
were the ones we most were

hoping we could add
to our existing breeding group.

The others that we're
planning on keeping

are a little
less-frequently seen in zoos.

For instance, like these
bothriopsis bilineata.

They're a real pretty
central American species.

They are really nice.

And the brongersma's pit viper
pair up there.

That's a recently
described species.

I think 2014 is when
they were described.

So I don't think there's
any of them

in a.Z.A. Collections
right now.

Really?

This is a snake box.

Some of the stakes
that we are sending out

are absolutely gorgeous.

I mean, some of them
are just spectacular.

Preliminary arrangements
have been made with Cameron park zoo,

Toledo zoo, Dallas zoo,
Nashville zoo,

and then we have
a couple of other facilities

We're looking at.

Their interested
in a variety of species,

Some of the mangrove pit vipers,

The red-tailed bamboo
pit vipers,

Sidewinders.

That's why we get
involved in situations like this.

It's always about the welfare
of the animal.

We'll step in.

We'll do the best we can
and try to guarantee

that these animals have
a good life from here on in.

Today is the day that
we're going to bring home

the female pronghorn.

All I've seen is humans."

We're at the Bronx zoo
health center,

and today's the day that we're
going to bring home

The female pronghorn.

It's nothing exciting at all.
It's just a crate.

One, two, three.
Easy peasy.

This is the last milestone
that I'm directly involved in,

Which is bringing her
to the queens zoo

and helping ease her transition.

I am an anchor. I am something
she is comfortable with.
