the balance, is wrong.

Crazy's not just being crazy.

Crazy is doing the same thing again and again and again

and expecting what? A different result.

That doesn't mean that this person's a good person or a bad person.

There's no judgment in this. Don't expect them to change. You have the power

to make that change. And you know what? You have to control your own well-being.

Can I get a amen?

(cheers and applause)

(phone ringing)

- [hey, sandy.]

- girl, you'll be so proud of me. I finally got-- - [no.]

[this time, I'm going first.]

- ok. Alright. - [I just...]

wanna let you know that I don't wanna be joined at your hip anymore.

- What you mean? I don't understand what you saying.

(cheryl sobs.) - [I can't do this anymore.]

I don't want to do this anymore.

I just need you to understand,

I feel like I can't breathe. - You can't breathe?

What's the problem? What's going on?

- [it's... It's everything. It's you, it's me,]

it's me not wanting to be salt for the rest of my life.

I wanna turn my life over to christ,

and I've tried to make this work, you know that I have.

I don't even know who I am.

I'm in pain all the time.

I've given everything I have to salt-n-pepa. - [you've given everything]

to this group. Like I haven't?

[we both got kids.]

I haven't given anything to this group?

It's been the two of us,

so anything you went through, I was right there. - [I know!]

but that's the point.

I need to carve out a space that has nothing to do with you.

[to figure out what I want from my life.]

- word.

Treach leave, you leave, my father leave-- that's fine.

[you're quitting just like them.]

I don't need you.

(sniffling)

I don't even need you.

You know that premonition I had?

It was of us.

We died.

Yo, this friendship is dead.

(sorrowful music)

(man): Here's wendy williams.

- (wendy): I've got some sad news to pass along to you.

A couple of hip-hop icons decided to hang up their stuff

and go their separate ways for once and for all.

I'm talking about two of my personal favorites,

sandy and sheryl, a.K.A. Salt-n-pepa.

Normally with a group that started out in the 80s,

when they finally decide to call it quits after 15 years,

some people say "it's about that time".

But this one hurts.

If either one of you all want to spill tea, call wendy.

(muffled music)

- well?

- Nah. It's not ready yet.

- Cheryl, you said that about every mix.

I mean, we spent a ton of money on this. We got all the guest collabs you wanted,

the hottest producers you asked for... You telling me you still don't like it?

- It just doesn't sound right without sandy to me.

There, I said it.

Sandy pulled me out of my box,

but I kept her from going over the edge.

- I can't tell you how much of a fan I am.

- Oh, thank you. - I grew up on salt-n-pepa.

So please don't take this as disrespect, but...

I didn't realise that, when I called you, you guys weren't together anymore.

Look, without salt, I just... (phone ringing)

I just don't think it's gonna work. - But we can--

- yeah, go ahead? Uh-huh.

(soft music)

(sobbing)

- I need to carve out a space

that has nothing to do with you.

- Nah, I'm telling you how it's gonna go, bitch! I wanna divorce!

(dramatic music)

- mom? Mom! The phone's for you!

- Ok, I'll be right out!

- Right, right.

Nah, I hear you. Mm-hmm.

Yeah, definitely, I'll let her know.

Ok. Yeah.

Alright, you'll hear from us. Bye.

- Who was that? - Uh...

Vh1.

Producers. They wanna honour you guys

on some, like, hip-hop hall of fame kinda thing.

It's in September.

I kinda figured you wouldn't wanna do it, that's why I didn't give you the phone.

- I have to do it. Vh1 wants to honour salt-n-pepa,

and salt says no? I can't do that.

They don't want us to perform, do they?

- How you feeling, sandy? You nervous?

Excited? Pissed off?

- Yes.

- in the early days of hip-hop, it was basically a boys' club.

All the biggest rappers and djs were men.

And while a few pioneering sisters did manage to make some noise--

shout-out to roxanne shante, sha-rock,

and the ladies of sequence--

it wasn't until our next honorees burst onto the scene

that female rappers were finally able to shatter hip-hop's glass ceiling.

The duo of cheryl "salt" james

and sandy "pepa" denton started ricking the mic in 1985 and never looked back.

Later joined by their dj, dee dee "spinderella" roper,

they were the first female rap group to go platinum.

They've sold over 15 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling

hip-hop acts of all time, male or female. They won a grammy,

they've inspired women and girls across the globe for the past two decades,

and they showed us the true power of sisterhood. (cheers and applause)
