- Hey thank you, Scarlett, bye, see you later!
- Good morning Alethea.
I'm just going to leave these on your desk.
- Great, thank you.
- Hey!
- Hey, how's it going?
- Doing good, got a ciggy?
- Yeah, yeah.
- It's a beautiful day.
- Yeah I know, it's awesome.
- It's your birthday, why's your face all screwed up
like an ugly cat's ass?
It's your mom again, isn't it?
- What's the stupid bitch done to you now,
- It's everything, okay?
It's mom, work, life.
To make things even shittier,
mom must've found herself a new toy boy
because she didn't come home last night again.
The last few years she just seems to forget and pisses off.
Doesn't even leave me a gift.
Like the least you can try and do is buy my love.
I mean Dad left her enough money in the divorce settlement.
- She's just a stupid bitch.
How many times do we have to tell you?
She's a selfish bitch
and you shouldn't have to worry about her.
No wonder your dad left her.
- Like, I just thought she would be more supportive
this year after everything she put Dad and I through.
It's fucked up.
- Scar, Amber and I don't want you to be upset on your birthday, okay?
You know you've got us and we're not gonna let you down.
- Yeah.
- Listen to Julie, we got you on this one.
With the work stuff, you'll sort it out, just relax.
Julie and I never got big, flashy jobs and we do okay.
We have fun and enjoy life.
- That's what's important, Scar.
You know that through all the bullshit
you just find a way to deal, smile, and get on with it.
- I don't know,
I was just so sure of what I wanted last year, you know?
Before all the walls broke down, now I don't know.
- That's right, your writing a piece on domestic violence.
- Yeah, that's it.
And the part where it says, discuss the impact
on our communities and the repercussions
has me wracking my brain.
I should've just stayed with my nine to five retail job.
Quit this journalism course, it's way too hard.
- Don't be silly.
- It's just such a dense topic.
And the repercussions, what the hell?
Take that woman who escaped that man's house.
The kidnapping on Wednesday afternoon.
That was so intense,
and she was the only one affected, of course.
- Jane, that poor woman ended up traumatized
by the ordeal, what about her family?
What about the community it happened in?
- That kidnapping case really shook me up.
It was so brazen and unpredictable.
What made that man think he could do that?
- I heard he was stalking her way before the attack.
- Afraid so.
We're still getting callers contacting us
about the report we broadcast on it.
It seems everybody has an opinion
and unfortunately they're not all in her favor.
- Yeah, she was wearing headphones, right?
- There you go, my point exactly, Jane.
- I have been reading up on this
and I find it very interesting.
Society has some very complex problems.
- You love all that type of stuff
and those feminist blogs I'm always seeing you read.
- I grew up in a traditional household
and it was instilled in my sisters and I
that women belong in the home, men in the workforce.
Time for a change, I don't plan on giving up
my independence and lifestyle when I marry.
- Which is soon, celebration drinks tonight
and bon voyage tomorrow.
- You must be so excited
about your big fat Greek wedding, Alethea!
- Yes, it will be big, but nothing like that movie, Jane.
Anyway, ask Maria about that woman's kidnap case
and she'll help.
Just don't go putting your foot in it again.
- Hey.
- Hi Jemma, it's good to see you again this week.
- Heya Molly, Rich and me are headed off to Bendigo
to visit the oldies.
- That's great.
It's great to get away from St Kilda once in a while.
Long drives are good for the soul.
- It's a whole other world out there, you know.
You don't miss it until you're away from it for ages,
then you notice.
- Yeah, how's your son? Enjoying country life?
- Yeah, I thought Christopher would be more like me
as a teen, you know?
Bored of the country bumpkin life.
But for some reason, he likes it.
Tells me he's going great guns at school,
he's got a whole bunch of mates.
- That's great to hear, Jemma.
- I've got this pic of Christopher on my phone.
He looks like his mom, hey?
- He's a good looking one, I see the resemblance.
Gosh, I think he was like 14 or so
the last time you brought him here.
- Yes, he's nearly 18 now, can you believe it?
I told him he can move in with me and Rich,
now I'm getting my shit together.
May have to get a bigger place but that's cool.
- That's great, you make sure you keep me informed, yeah?
Next time you hear from him
I'm sure you'll be able to line up another visit.
Anyway, is there anything you need for this weekend?
- No, it's all good.
I've got enough food to last me until next week,
Rich went shopping yesterday.
Thanks Molly.
- Always a pleasure.
- How you doing?
- Hey, how's it going?
- Watch your eyes, it's so bright, jeez!
- Thank you very much, you've all been so kind to me.
Thank you so much.
- I can't believe it's come around so fast.
- I know, I'm going to miss you but I'm very excited.
- Now I think it's time for cheers.
- Definitely.
- Absolutely.
- Three cheers to Alethea for getting married, woo-hoo!
- Too much fun and excitement for me.
Hip hip, hooray!
- Look at this baby, just for you!
She hates me, she hates me.
- Come on, I love you.
- You just need to let loose a little bit,
stop being so wound up all the time.
It's so fucking exhausting to watch.
- You're only 19 once, pop a pill, kiss a girl.
It's not gonna kill you.
Come on, it's your birthday, no excuses.
- Richard. Yep darl, you okay?
Yeah, I'm done with that Packer wannabe,
thank God that's over.
No, no, I'm alright.
Anyway what did the doctor say?
Alright, okay.
Yeah well I'm down on Fitzroy Street near the spot.
Yeah, you know it.
You reckon you could get me a little pressie,
a little pick me up?
Take it easy, Rich, it's been fucking ages.
It's my fucking body, alright?
Yup, love you.
Okay, see you in a bit.
And hurry, would you? I'm starved on all fronts.
- You're not wearing that!
- You guys are so mean.
- We're going clubbing.
- No, no!
- Come on, come on, come on, come on!
- Woah, woah, Trudy and Susannah.
- Bloody hell, finally you get your sense of humor back.
- Did you get that for your birthday?
Yeah, that's it, there.
That's my phone.
- I think this outfit would be bangin'
if it just wasn't so long and secretary like.
- Secretary like? It gives me nice shape.
- Well that'll do.
- Can we go now?
- Here love, here's your cut.
You didn't forget, did you?
- No, of course not.
Good girl, I love you.
- I love you right back.
Cheers for dinner.
I've got to get back to work though, eh?
I've got to get a half normal mug, it's all assholes so far.
- I fucking worry about you on nights like this.
You're tired, I hate to see
these little pricks wearing you down.
- I know what I'm doing, I can handle these mugs.
You go and rest your bum knee,
have a night off from following me around, you stalker.
- I can't just leave you.
- I'm a strong woman so don't you worry, okay?
Please love, just go home and rest up.
- I'll go home and take a nap and I'll call you later, okay?
- See you.
- Get a real job you fucking slut!
- You working tonight, love?
Just after a quickie.
- What?
Fuck you!
- Fuck you, you tramp!
- Hey everybody, I'm going to call it a night.
I'm exhausted.
- No, already?
- This wedding excitement has worn me out.
- Please just stay a bit longer, please.
- As much as I would love another cocktail
it's getting late.
You party animals rage on into the night without me.
- Fine.
- Thank you.
- Can you get up?
- I can get up, can you get up?
- Big hug!
- Goodbye!
- Take care, we'll miss you.
- Thank you for everything!
- Take care, goodbye!
- Alethea, I don't want you walking home alone.
Can I call you a cab or maybe wait out front
and we can get one together?
- Don't bother, Marie, it's okay, really.
I don't live far, I walk home from here many times, okay?
- You're sure?
- Hey beautiful lady, how was your night?
You got a light?
- I don't smoke.
- Neither do I.
So you're walking home by yourself,
got a boyfriend, something like that?
Hey all I want to do is talk,
no need to be a bitch about it or anything.
You know what, stuff you then, slut.
- Love this!
- Let's party, it's your birthday.
- I want another one.
- Shots!
- You're still around,
you looking for a girl or what?
- Fucking bitch!
- Please don't trip, shh!
People are sleeping.
- Oi, oi, oi, shots fired!
- Shots! Shots!
- Alright, bye.
- I'll see you later, then?
- Yeah, see you.
- Bye.
- I'm standing here on a quiet St Kilda street
just meters from the alleyway
where the partially naked body of a woman
has been found by a local couple
out on their regular Saturday stroll.
The victim is said to be known to the police
and locals of St Kilda.
And it is now becoming clear
that she may have been a local sex worker.
Her handbag was found at the end of the alleyway,
and although one witness has come forward
saying they believe they heard a woman scream,
they later stated that they thought it was drunks
so they didn't pay it any attention.
At this stage no other witnesses have come forward
to shed light on the attacker's identity.
With the sex worker trade still rife in St Kilda
and a constant underlying issue in this community,
one can not help but think that this woman
became a victim of her trade and lifestyle choices.
Danger just comes with the territory for sex workers,
as one can imagine.
- Just a slut, so predictable.
- She was a prostitute,
what did she expect?
She lured him into the alley.
- Hey, you look pale, are you okay?
- Yeah, I'm just a bit hungover.
This woman was killed, it's just a bit much, you know?
- I know, crazy,
- The messed up thing is last night was my birthday
and I'm pretty sure I walked passed here with my friend
to get back to the apartment.
- Wow, I actually live just down there,
not that far from here.
My work colleagues celebrated my farewell last night,
we had drinks on Ackland Street.
I walked home alone, it was not a first for me.
But Friday night I was actually creeped out by a man.
It was just paranoia but...
- So, young lady, young lady tell us,
you are a local, right?
How do you feel as a young woman in the community
and your safety in St Kilda when you venture out at night?
You must tell us, tell Australia exactly how it feels.
- Yeah, I've been a local in St Kilda since I was 15.
So, five years now, or four.
I've always felt safe here.
I guess it is because it's only recently,
since I've been old enough to drink,
that I've been hitting the local night spots until late.
I've always headed out with friends, at least two of us.
You know, St Kilda does have a rep.
It is known for it's sex workers and drug pushers,
no doubt, but it's not that bad, really.
Like no worse than any other suburb, safety wise.
- Great, excellent, so tell me how do you feel
after you've heard this news?
And will it stop you from venturing out after dark?
- I am quite shocked by what's happened to this woman.
It is very sad.
I can't believe I must've walked past here last night
after my birthday.
Yeah, I find what happened to her scary, no doubt,
but it's not gonna stop me from going out.
I mean, it could've been me.
Or my friend last night instead of her.
It could've been any woman.
Anybody's mother, or sister,
or even your daughter.
