A new day and a new expedition,

one I never could
have anticipated.

Okay,
so I just landed

after flying here
from half a world away.

I literally walked away

from the episode
that we were filming

thanks to potential
breaking news

in the world of "the secret" --

a continent-sized treasure hunt

that's been going on
for close to 40 years.

in 1982,

author byron preiss releases

a daring game of hide and seek.

He encases 12 keys

in 12 ceramic treasure boxes

and surreptitiously buries them

in parks across north america.

The location of each key
is a secret,

revealed only by deciphering

preiss' cryptic verses

and the enigmatic paintings

of renowned illustrator

john jude palencar.

All the clues you need
are contained

in byron preiss'
diabolically difficult book

and yet to date,

only two of the 12 treasures
have been found

and over the last 20 years,

nobody has been able
to advance the game.

The path to victory
sounds simple enough.

Find a box or cask,
as they're known,

and you find a key which
you then turn into the author

in exchange
for a valuable precious gem.

Tragically, though,

preiss passed away
in a car accident in 2005

taking the solutions to
the remaining puzzles with him.

Today, his wife sandy safeguards
the remaining prizes.

Over the last few years,

I've followed countless
puzzle searchers

around the country

and I've received
thousands of e-mails

from people who believe
they cracked the case.

But 48 hours ago,

I received an e-mail
from a complete stranger

that made my jaw drop.

In it, he explains
that he believes

he's found the solution
to the boston puzzle.

He writes that,
"this is not a hoax."

notes that he's "been
working on this for years"

and offers "to explain
his solution in person."

but it's the image
that he attached

that catapulted him

to the front of the line.

The e-mail contained an image

of the broken corner
of a ceramic clock face,

one of the signature symbols

found on byron preiss'
treasure casks.

As one of only
a handful of people

to have actually laid eyes

on the two previously
recovered boxes.

I have to say,
this image looks authentic.

So, where the hell did
this fragment come from?

And how did this guy
get his hands on it?

in boston's historic
copley square.

Where did you first find out
about this book?

Interesting story.
I am a game and puzzle designer.

That's your job.

So, this is like
right up your alley.

About two years ago,
my kids were huge

"expedition unknown" fans.
Good taste.

They were watching the episode
featuring "the secret."

and they called me in,
and they were like,

"dad, dad!
You got to check this out.

There is hidden treasure buried
somewhere in boston."

we spent months
wandering the city

looking for this thing.
Right.

And, actually,
along the way,

I started to find
that I was losing weight.

I've actually lost
40 pounds.

You lost 40 pounds looking
for this treasure?!

[ chuckling ]
40 pounds.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I'm josh gates -- the founder
of the secret to weight loss.

But if I've learned anything

in my years
of searching for "the secret"...

No, no, no, no, no.

...It's, don't count your casks
before they're found.

Let's cut to
the chase here.

This e-mail,
you attached an image

that looked a lot like something
from one of these boxes.

What the hell is it?
Where is it?

I want to see it.

All will be revealed.

To get the whole story,

jason is going to have
to walk me through

every step of his solve.

Step one, convince me
we're in the right city.

Right.
Right.

Every puzzle
from "the secret"

requires matching a painting
with a verse.

That's right.
Which painting did you use?

The painting that was
on the front of the book.

The main one.
The main one. Yep.

Okay, the most famous
of all "the secret" paintings --

the woman
holding the box.

If you actually look closely
at her arm,

you'll see
the letters b-o-s.

Oh! In the sleeve.
Right there.

B-o-s.
Yeah.

If you look closely down
at the bottom right,

you'll see a big globe

and what looks like
the letter "b" around it.

So, boston globe.
The boston globe.

A famous newspaper
here in town.

Right, and on the box that
she's folding in the painting,

something else
really interesting.

If you look over your shoulder,
you'll see an image.

Get out of here.

The trinity church.
Yep.

Big landmark here
in downtown boston.

And it does look a lot
like the painting.

We see these turrets
on top of the church there.

And then the thing
that really seals the deal

is the verse.
Which verse do you use?

I use verse 3.
Verse 3.

"if thucydides is north
of xenophon" --

a very weird
and obscure start

to this poem.
It's strange.

They're actually
ancient greek philosophers

born around
the year 400 b.C.

The burt and ernie
of ancient greece.

And what do these guys
have to do with boston?

If you look over
your left shoulder...

Boston public library.
...Boston public library.

Over there.
Right there.

if you look
on this wall,

there are the names
of philosophers,

historians, artists.

Moses, herodotus.

Thucydides.
Right there, right there.

It's right there.
Yeah.

And is xenophon
on there?

If you look just to
your right...

Xenophon.
...Xenophon.

They're literally
carved in stone.

So, it has to be boston.
Has to be boston.

No question.

Gates: One of the only
other places

where these two names
appear together

is in a letter written
by english historian

horace walpole

who imagined a new age
of enlightenment

in america.

He noted that another thucydides

might emerge in boston

or a new xenophon in new york.

If thucydides is
north of xenophon,

just as boston
is north of new york.

Very, very specific.

And north, jason believes,

is the key to this whole puzzle.

After all, he's noticed
that the north star

is hidden in plain sight
in the painting.

The north is
right that way.

I'm right behind you.

How do you like them apples?

And if jason has, in fact,

found the secrets
boston treasure box,

he's in good company.

You might say they're the most
exclusive club in the world.

Only five people
who have seized elusive glory

by solving the unsolvable

and finding one of
the treasure boxes

of "the secret."

the first cask was dug up

only a year after
"the secret" was published

in the city of chicago.

woman: Three suburban teenagers
uncovered a buried treasure

in grant park

after reading a book
that's called "the secret."

to my right, bob wrobel,
erik gasiorowski.

There's something more to it
than this, isn't there?

First off, inside the box,
there is a key,

and we have to send it
to the author

to let him know that
we've got the treasure.

And then he sends us out
an emerald.

So, you really
got a treasure.

Gates: It was
a remarkable victory,

but nobody could follow it up
for 20 years.

Preiss waited for someone else

to unearth one
of his hidden keys.

Then in 2004,

someone did.

The box was recovered
in cleveland's

greek cultural garden by lawyers
brian zinn and andy abrams.

Years later,
andy walked me through the spot

where it all went down

and I started poking
with the prodding tool

in three strokes.

I had something.

Within about 25 minutes,
we unearth a box

that had been buried
22 years earlier

waiting for somebody
to find it.

Gates: Yeah.
And we did.

gates: 2 down.

10 to go.

And for the last 15 years,

that's been
the end of the story,

but today,
we're on the cusp of finding out

if another treasure
has been found

right here in boston.

Krupat: Josh,
you know where we are.

Gates: I do.

I've spent a lot of time
around here.

We are right near
faneuil hall and haymarket,

and we're kind of on the edge
of the north end.

Boston's historically famous
italian neighborhood.

You know, we know
that immigration

plays a big role
in each of these puzzles, right?

Each one is themed after
a different immigrant group.

The book is infused
with references

to different cultures --

something I learned
several years ago

when I met with
the late author's daughters

blaire and karah preiss
at ellis island.

Gates: And your family
came through here, right?

-Mm-hmm.
-Our dad's dad.

And that's what
I think made my dad

so obsessed with
the immigration story.

Gates: Each puzzle
of "the secret"

celebrates
a different immigrant group

and their journey to america.

It was the irish in chicago.

There was a nod to the greeks
in the cleveland puzzle.

So, is boston
all about italian immigrants.

I think so,
and actually there are

a ton of clues in both
the image and the verse

that leads us
in that direction.

That flower is called
the gladiolus,

and that is...

An italian flower.
An italian flower.

Got it. Okay.
That's one.

And then if you look
at the fairy...

She's holding the gem,
the prize for this puzzle.

Right, and that is
actually the peridot,

which is...
An italian stone.

An italian stone.
Okay. Got it.

So, we are talking
about italians.

Yep, and, josh,
the name of this park is....

Christopher columbus park.

Named after the most famous
italian explorer of all time.

There's a clue that's been
staring us in the face

for like 40 years.

Where?
It's right over there.

Show me.

So, I want you
to take a look

at the woman in that painting.
I'm looking at her.

And then take a look
up there.

Oh, my god.
It's her.

Gates: I'm chasing news
of a possible breakthrough

in the search for a real deal
buried treasure.

Nearly four decades ago,

author byron preiss published
a book called "the secret,"

a series of paintings and poems

that lead to 12 keys
buried across america.

To date,
only two have been found.

Now I've dropped everything
to fly to boston,

where jason krupat
claims to have proof

that he has discovered
the location of a third.

Josh take a look at the woman
on this painting.

Gates: Okay.
I'm looking at her.

And then take
a look up there.

Oh, my god.
It's her.

It's her.

She's columbus.
Yeah, identical.

The eyes, the nose,
the mouth.

Everything.
That's her.

You've cracked
the cover of the book.

I think so.
And thematically,

doesn't that make
so much sense.

It fits.

This idea of people
coming from the old world

to the so-called new world.
Right.

And who is more
associated with that

than this towering figure

who, for better or worse,
hero or villain

opened up europe
to the americas?

And in the case
of this particular puzzle

an incredibly famous italian.
Exactly.

In some ways,
it seems like

such an obvious thing
now that I see it.

Yeah, and that's kind of
the crazy thing

about this puzzle.

It just feels like
it's been overthought

to some degree.
Right.

So, you think about byron,
it's a summer of 1981.

He's got
12 casks to bury

across all of these
different locations.

And it's like
40 years ago.

Think about what
he didn't have.

He didn't have
the internet.

He didn't have g.P.S.

He didn't have
google earth.

So he basically had

his imagination,
tourist maps,

and any research that he'd done
at a local library.

So, it may be that
the reason that

this has alluded people
for so long

is they're over-solving it.

I think
they're over-solving it.

And then the other thing
that sort of compounded it is,

he had to get in,

dig a hole quick,
and get out.

Right. So it's got
to be someplace discreet.

It's got
to be discreet.

So, what about this
incredibly public park?

Not a good spot.
You don't think it's here.

I do not think
it's here.

So, you think this park
is kind of a way station.

There's a clue here.
But we're meant

to go somewhere else.

I think so.
Alright.

So the next line says,

"take five steps
in the area of his direction."

you think "his" is columbus.
His direction.

His direction
is columbus.

And his direction is...

Right out here.

I think the location

where the cask is
is in the north.

So we've got to
go further.

We got to go further.

Gates: Further in this case

means five steps
in columbus's direction,

which brings us out toward
the edge of boston harbor.

It's a lovely view,
but I have some questions now.

Now, jason, I don't mean to be
a negative nancy here,

but I do not
see any steps.

There are no steps.
You're not looking for a step.

You're looking
for a wharf.

A klingon?
The guy from star trek?

Head of security
on the uss enterprise?

No, no. I mean
a literal wharf.

You mean a wharf,
like w-h-a-r-f.

That's what I mean, yes.
Got it.

Meaning the piers
that we see here.

The piers
all around us

and that we're standing
on right now.

Gates: In fact,
jason has also noticed

that some of the city's wharves

appear to be hidden
in the painting,

beneath
the mysterious woman's hair.

So, I actually have a map.
And, josh, if you take a look.

Okay.
So, we are where?

Lewis wharf.
We're at lewis wharf right now.

And we came from
columbus park.

And we're going north,

and we're facing out
to the waters right.

Like the statue tells us.
That's right.

And you think
these are the steps?

I mean, they do look
like steps, actually.

They look like steps.

There are actually literally
more than five wharves.

But if you cluster
them together,

you can actually
easily think of these

as as five steps.

One, two, three,
four five.

We head north.
We head north.

Follow the wharves.
Follow the wharves.

Alright. Here we go.
Arm photon torpedoes.

gates: Our journey north
past the wharves

leads us squarely through

the historic routes of boston.

And what do you think
this big circular portal is?

Yeah, I've never
quite figured it out.

There's a part of me
that always thinks

that it's something astronomical
but I don't really know.

It's super confusing.
Yeah, totally.

Gates: We know north
is important in this puzzle

and that's why jason's path
leads us to the city's

most famous neighborhood --
the north end.

It's been a welcoming home
to waves of immigrants

over the last 400 years,

but since the early
20th century,

the soul of this place
has belonged to the italians.

And today, traces of
the old country remain.

Everything in this neighborhood

looks so delicious
that I momentarily

become obsessed with an even
more valuable treasure.

Oh! So good!

Okay. Leave the book.
Take the cannolis.

I think we need the book.
We do. That's true.

We need the book, too,
but take the cannolis, for sure.

gates: To walk off dessert,

we push on to the very edge
of the north end.

Alright. Well,
we've walked our five steps.

And now what do we do.
What's, josh, the one thing

that all of these dig sites
have in common?

They're all --
they're all in a park.

They are all
in a park.

And so I found myself
at the end of the five steps

the center of
italian heritage,

in the middle
of the north end.

Right.
And guess what?

There was a park,
and this is it.

This.

This is the park.

Jason, this is
a construction site.

Yeah.
It was a real problem.

[ laughs ] okay, so when
you first found this place,

was it like this?
No.

It was just a regular park

with baseball fields
and playgrounds.

Yeah.
And then about three months ago,

I walked by,
and I saw this.

Were you just
like crestfallen.

Yeah, my heart just dropped
because I knew --

I knew there was
a buried treasure in this park,

and I was concerned,
afraid that it was going

to be dug up
and lost to eternity.

So, what was this place?
This was langone park.

Okay, and so what are
they doing to it?

They are completely remodeling
it and reconstructing it.

No. [ laughs ]
yeah.

They're ripping it all up?
Ripping it apart.

And what did you do?
I went in.

You went into
the site?

Yeah, come on.
I'll show you.

Okay. Are we allowed
to go in here?

Yeah, I think --
I think we'll be good.

What? You think we'll be.
[ stammers ] okay.

There is a big --
you see it the --

alright.
It says danger.

Gates: Ignoring a danger sign
is never a smart thing to do.

However, it's just another
day at the office

in my epic odyssey
to unlock the secret.

I first got hooked
on this '80s-era puzzle

a few years ago in milwaukee,
wisconsin's lake park,

where I met journalist
james renner.

Now, what you have here is mill,
walking stick, key.

Mil-walk-key.
Isn't that clever?

That is clever.
Yeah.

One, two, three,
four, five, six.

We followed the clues
in the verse around the park

until we arrived
at a feline statue

that caught my eye.

Gates:
Look at this.

I think she's the lion.
Look at her.

Yeah.

Nobody's figured that out
before, by the way.

Really.
Yeah.

Alright.
I'll take it.

[ thunder rumbles ]

come on, byron.

We dug in a deluge.

What are you hitting?
Man, that looks like something.

It's a rock.

It's a rocky.
Are you sure?

I don't think
it's here.

But in the end,
we were forced to leave

empty handed.

Next, the masterminds
behind the cleveland solve,

andy abrams and brian zinn,

decided to make a run
at a second box.

I joined them at
the fountain of youth park

in st. Augustine, florida.

Alright.
Let's do it.

Using ground penetrating radar,

we identified a target to dig.

What is that?

What is that?!

And with andy and brian
by my side,

it felt like we couldn't lose.

Wait! Is that it?

But...

Aw!

[ laughter ]
it's tile.

Argh!

My searches inspired

a whole new generation
of secret fanatics

who flooded my inbox and mailbox

with their solutions
and guesses.

They led me to charleston,
south carolina.

How confident are you
it's in this park?

I'm 100% confident.

Prove it.

Yeah, let's go.

But it wasn't meant to be.

It is a stone.

Oh, man.

On the other side
of the country,

there was a momentary thrill

when word broke that
a french treasure hunter

had unearthed
the san francisco box.

A park ranger escorted me
to the site,

but the box turned out
to be a fake,

and the finder was
never awarded a prize.

And not too far away,
I met deirdre and dustin white

who were convinced that shadows
from local landmarks

were the secret to the secret.

But when it came time to put
their theory to the test...

Hold on, hold on,
hold on, hold on!

What is that?

No, no, no, no, no.

...The box wasn't there.

That is rounded

it is...
A pvc irrigation pipe.

Now after four
fruitless searches,

I'm here,
in boston's langone park,

where jason claims today is
going to be different.

But right now,
I'm not exactly confident.

Well, josh,
welcome to what's left

of langone park.

Jason,
there's nothing here.

gates: I'm in the italian
enclave of boston's north end,

where local jason krupat claims
one of the elusive boxes

from the treasure hunt
known as "the secret"

is buried in this park --

a term I'm using very loosely.

Well, josh,
welcome to what's left

of langone park.

It's beautiful.

Yeah, it looked nicer
a few months ago,

but this is
what it is today.

Gates: Founded in 1973,

langone park is
a relatively new addition

to a city that dates
back to 1630.

Why here? I mean,
you're really gonna have to

take me back in time,
it looks like.

Yeah. So once you're here,
all of the clues make sense.

Alright. Well, I'll hold you
to that.

Alright.
So, the next clue is,

"a green tower of lights

in the middle section."

so, what is a green
tower of lights.

This is a clue
that has tripped up

a lot of people.

When you think
of boston,

what's the one big

green tower of lights
that you think of.

You think of fenway park
fenway park, green monster.

Right.

The green monster is the famous
left field wall in fenway.

And there are towers of lights.
Absolutely.

But it's not there.

I think people have
been tripped up

over that clue
for years.

Okay. What do you think
the green tower of lights is?

So, josh, if you look
across the harbor here,

you will see
the famous tobin bridge.

The tobin bridge.

The maurice j. Tobin
memorial bridge

spans the mystic river

from chelsea to boston.

Since it was built in 1950,

it has been painted
a vivid rustic green.

I hate that bridge.

I've been stuck in traffic
on that bridge

more times than
I can count.

Yeah, and at night,

it's lit up
for airplane avoidance.

Okay. So literally
a green tower of lights

it's certainly,
other than the green monster,

the most famous green thing

in boston.
Absolutely.

Jason concedes
that the tower of lights

might also have
been actual lights

here in langone park
that were torn down.

But either way, he thinks
this is the right spot.

Okay.
So, I'll buy that.

Now, what about
in the middle section?

So, actually,
if you look around,

we are in the middle section
of the park,

where three
baseball fields were.

There is one
behind us over here.

Another one
over your shoulder there.

And we are
in the middle one.

We're in the middle section.
Yep.

Okay.

Then it says,
"near those who pass

the coliseum
with metal walls."

well, here is where
it gets more interesting.

If you look over your shoulder,
directly behind you,

is an ice skating rink.

And, josh, what
is that made out of?

Made entirely of metal.

And the rink is inside,
I assume,

circular like a coliseum.

Now we have,
"face the water."

so, we are facing now
out to the boston harbor.

Here it is.
So, we're facing the water.

Easy enough.

"your back
to the stairs."

please be a staircase
behind me.

If you look behind you --
there is a staircase!

A huge staircase
leading up the hill.

Yep, so this is called
copp's hill terrace.

It was built in the 1890s.

The whole thing is made
out of granite.

Actually,
if you look at the picture,

you'll see a lot of imagery
that looks pretty similar.

Right.
Lots of stonework.

Lots of stonework.
Around her.

Man.
This is getting good.

It says, "18th day, 12th hour,
lit by lamp light."

as a native bostonian...
Right.

...This feels like it might be
referencing paul revere.

It is referencing
paul revere,

and you know the day

that paul revere
started that famous ride?

I'm hoping it's the 18th day.
You're correct.

It's April 18th, 1775.

And 12th hour because
he rode at midnight.

He rode at midnight.

And "lit by lamplight"

because famously those lamps
were put up

in the old north church.

And how does that connect
to the stairs?

Well, paul revere's house
was directly behind

where those
stairs are today.

Get out of here.
Yeah.

So when paul revere actually
began that midnight ride,

he came down where
those stairs are currently

to langone park.

Paul revere would have come
through this park.

He would have come
right through this park,

right in
the middle section.

I mean,
that's gotta be right.

Gates: And the remaining clues
also seem to fit here.

One line says,

"all the letters
are here to see."

directly across the way
is another boston landmark.

The uss constitution.

When byron was here,

she was likely flying
her signal flags,

nautical markings
where each symbol

is associated
with a different letter.

All here to see.

Unbelievable.
Unbelievable.

And what's really incredible
about this is

that the clues are
all around us.

All around us.
You look across.

There's your green
tower of lights.

There's your all the letters.
Constitution.

There's the colosseum
right behind you.

The stairs.
Over there.

All right around us.

You can see every clue
from this point.

That leaves, stranded now
in the middle of the verse...

"feel at home."

I think that this is

the single most important clue
in the entire verse.

Okay. Why?

Because he's telling us --

he's telling us
where to dig.

Okay. It says
"feel at home."

like, make yourself at home.
No.

What I think he meant

was actually
dig in that spot.

Feel.
Feel.

At home.
At home.

Meaning home plate.
Home plate.

On the baseball field.
On the baseball field.

That's where
you're supposed to dig.

right over there.

Because two days ago,
they hit something.

renovating langone park,

and they play a critical role
in jason's story.

Three months ago,
you slipped through this fence.

underneath home plate

is buried treasure."

and you thought...?

he was crazy.

So, did you tell
everybody at the dig site?

We did tell them.

Even though you thought
he was out of his mind.

We said that
we'd take a look for him.

nothing happens nothing at all.

And then...

Sitting at lunch
two days ago,

and I get a text message.

That says
says...

"I think we found
something."

and who's the one

who found something.
I did.

So, you operate what here?

The excavator.

So, you're over here
digging this hole.

Yes.
And what happens?

First thing I hit was
this right here.

Oh-ho-ho!
Plexiglass.

-Yep.
-Corners.

And look at the glue.
That's right.

This looks like it might have
been the edge of a box.

Absolutely

byron's boxes are like
a kind of nesting doll --

a plexiglass outer shell,
a ceramic box,

and in the center a ceramic key.

And when you hit this,
did this set off an alarm for.

we found this.

gates: For nearly 40 years,

most of the riddles of
the treasure hunt "the secret"

have wrestled the world's
best puzzle solvers to a draw.

To date,
only two of the 12 casks

buried across the continent
have been found.

And that's
when we found this.

Okay.

But now,
against astounding odds,

and after years of searching

that number may be
about to go up.

Oh...My...God.

[ chuckles ]

it's the clock.
We found it.

Each of these casks

had a hand painted clock
inside the lid.

And I have to say,
as one of very few people,

who have seen
the other two boxes,

this looks real.

This is real.

Gates: Painted on the underside
of each lid is a clock face

telling us which gem is awarded
for solving the puzzle.

In this case,
it's set to 8:00,

a reference to August,
the eighth month,

whose birthstone is a peridot.

I examined the fragments
closely -- the paint,

the delicate crumbling plaster,
with telltale carved reliefs.

This is 100% authentic.

But to claim the stone,

we need to find the key.

Okay. So, we have
a few fragments here.

Where's the rest of it?

-It's over in the hole.
-In the ground.

-Still in the pit!?
-Yeah.

And the key.
It's got to be in there.

Can we get in there and dig?
Is that possible?

Yes, it is.

Let's dig.

You're ready.
I'm ready.

for the last few days,
the construction company

has kept
this section of the site

roped off and under guard.

Now...
We're going in.

And we're joined
by a special crew for the job.

Jason's family.

They're here to help,
just as they've been doing

since the beginning
of his search.

in a haystack situation here,

except instead of a needle,
it's key,

and instead of a haystack,
it's a...Filthy pile of dirt.

and before we find anything,

it appears that someone else
has found us.

So, just to be clear,
we have a few people now

who have gathered outside
of the construction site

wearing a construction gear,

and they do not work here.

These folks are looking
for the box from "the secret."

people are serious
about this puzzle.

Okay.
Just ignore him.

Keep digging.

We search every inch of the pit,
carefully sifting through

hundreds of pounds of dirt
for anything ceramic.

Stone.

Old spike.

That is...

A rock.

Keep looking.

Gates:
But with daylight fading,

our mission to find the key

is beginning to feel hopeless.

And this is tough.
This is tedious.

You want me to bring in
some muscle?

Some muscle?
Some big muscle.

What do you got?
Yeah, sure.

Bring it in.

The excavator will be able

to move through more dirt
in minutes

than we have all day.

And even though this is
a piece of heavy machinery,

the operator, mitch,
is wielding it like a scalpel.

I think the excavator
smashed most of the box

when it hit it originally,

so we're really carefully

just trying to remove
all this discarded soil.

But I think
most of what's in here

is gonna be a pieces.

at ellis island.

Blaire: I was hopeful.

that people are so into it.

And for us, it's like,
we get to come here today

and, like,
make a new memory with him.

Karah: His whole thing

was about dragging
people out

and making them explore.

And so the fact
that he has, like,

forced other families together
to do stuff like this

is very meaningful,
because it was --

that's his legacy.

So it makes
perfect sense.

This really is immortality
in a true way.
