Dustin and his crew are already on the gold.

Dustin: We're still just cleaning out the hole that we dug last year.

And there is gold in it.

James: This is from our first three dives.

1.325 ounces. Holy [bleep].

That's just a little bit over an ounce and a quarter in nuggets.

-In nuggets. -It's pretty amazing.

Almost an ounce and a half

With just the stuff we picked off the top.

This is like five, six hours of dive right there,

And that's already over an ounce and a quarter?

Remember, guys, this is all flood gold.

Wait till we get to the virgin ground beneath it.

Dustin's crew are putting their lives on the line

To get down to bedrock gold and finally strike it rich.

The guys are finding gold. Hopefully, it's my turn today.

We know that the old-timers got down to the bedrock itself,

And it was like a gold layer over the whole bottom.

It's all about finding a place that somebody hasn't dredged.

And I think this is it.

Narrator: But record snowfall this winter

Means millions of gallons of water

Are thundering down through rockfall ravine.

Carlos: All right, dustin, man. I got you loud and clear, man.

All right. Gonna be a long dive.

Everybody do what you're supposed to.

Whoo-hoo! It's gonna be cold!

There you go. Diving under water.

Narrator: Dustin's finally reached virgin ground.

Now he must clear all the boulders and untouched gravel,

Collecting every nugget on his way down

To what could be over 10 feet to bedrock

And a monster pile of gold.

That's a heck of a rock, man.

How am I supposed to get that out?

But the deeper he dives, the bigger the boulders.

I got a bigger one right here. Can I use something else, or?

You need a super claw?

I don't know if I can, to tell you the truth.

Narrator: The super claw is the ultimate tool

In the crew's arsenal for moving the largest boulders.

Dustin: Oh, it's down?

Narrator: After four hours of wrestling a boulder...

Dustin: We have to do something else.

Narrator: ...Dustin admits defeat.

Dustin: I don't know what I'm doing, dude. I'm out of it.

Narrator: His path to bedrock gold is blocked.

That was the hardest dredging I've ever done -- ever.

Can't get a strap because it's on the bottom.

There's no way for me to get underneath it.

You know, the super claw worked well for us last year.

It grabbed everything we needed to.

But we're getting ahold of some boulders here

We can't get the super claw around.

We've got to get these boulders out.

I mean, that's all there is to it,

Because these big boulders are covering up large gold.

Narrator: Two miles down the mountain...

You got to be kidding me. Holy -- kind of up and left.

The only reason I knew --

'cause he left his microphone in the trailer,

And I noticed the toyota's missing.

Narrator: Fred's most experienced diver has gone awol.

Paul: Sorry I had to leave you guys,

But I had some stuff I had to take care of --

Damn! You're supposed to let me know something, man.

I'm gonna put you guys in a little bit of a bind,

But probably just for a few days.

Get right back at it.

Oh, we just got started.

How the hell are we gonna get

To the bottom of that hole without you?

I just had a call to paul.

He said that he had some business to take care of.

I can understand, but it really puts us in a bind.

Gonna be tough on us. Gonna be real tough on us.

Narrator: Fred's crew has only dived once all season.

Now he's down to just one experienced miner

And his new recruit.

Paul had to leave. We're by ourself now.

Ryan and I can't handle it all week long.

Scott, we're gonna have to count on you to pick up the slack.

You'll find out this is not easy work.

When you understand the system well enough

And got the right attitude about it,

I'm gonna put you in the water.

Scott: There's a little bit of pressure.

They're trusting me to come in here

And learn their whole dredge system,

But, you know, if they're willing to teach me,

I'm willing to learn it all.

He's never gold mined before,

But with paul missing in action...

Fred: Not having paul is a big, big loss.

We've lost a lot of time because of that virus.

I'm gonna give scott a lot more responsibility today,

So we'll see how it works.

Narrator: Fred's crew return to the trifecta

For only their second dive of the season.

Here, the creek is much wider than dustin's side,

So the bedrock gold should be much deeper at over 20 feet.

Is that sitting on the bottom right there?

Yeah.

I need to move it over this way a little bit.

Ryan: We're all sorry to have lost paul,

But that's just gonna mean that fred and I are going to have to

Dive a whole lot more during the week.

There's a ton of white water out there right now.

It's looking pretty dangerous out there,

But I'm gonna hop in there and see what I can do.

Hopefully, I can see some gold.

Narrator: Fred's convinced they're dredging the site

Of a gold-rich ancient waterfall.

Ryan's goal -- use the sled to clear the large rocks

And dredge down through the gravel to the bedrock floor,

Where they're sure there's a pile of gold worth millions.

Ryan's first dive this year.

He's working on the bedrock on the side, going down

He's taking smaller rocks, putting them in the sled.

That rock basket's pretty well good to pull.

He's kicking ass, moving a lot of material.

He's got rocks going in the basket.

We're getting her done.

Look out.

Looks like we got some visitors coming in.

Carlos and dustin are here.

See what you were doing down there.

I want to see what that dragoid can do.

Dustin's come to check out fred's custom-built rock rake,

Ryan: I'm doing good. Do you need me to move?

Could you kind of just stretch back over

Toward the wall just a little bit.

Hey, scott, get that basket out of there and rehook the dragoid.

It took dustin three weeks to clear four feet

Of boulders and gravel.

All right, go ahead and pull on it.

I got the downstream cleared.

But with the dragoid, fred matched that,

Removing the top four feet of boulders in just one week.

Hopefully it don't grab ahold of the sled.

Which it probably is.

Nope, it's right on top of it.

Kill the dragoid. [bleep] we're really honked up.

One of the dragoid's teeth is caught on the sled.

Yeah, we got our dragoid in the way of our sled,

And it caught it.

Gonna have to try to turn it over or something.

Turn the dragoid over.

I can put it back on its backside here

And as you loosen it, I can flip to put right downstream.

You don't have to do any of that.

Turn it over into the water. It'll be off the sled.

It's gonna be backwards.

I know, but it'll straighten itself out.

It's gonna be in deeper, faster water, though.

No, it won't. Push the dragoid over.

He's short a guy right now, and he looks like

He's struggling pretty bad because of it.

From the dragoid.

Dustin: So they parked the dragoid just off to the side,

And they keep running into it with the sled.

So they caught each other pretty bad.

Dustin wants to see if the dragoid

Can fix his own boulder problem.

...Shackle that I need.

Fred: You didn't put it on. I just asked.

I thought you just put a 15-foot cable on there.

No, because the shackle I need is still attached to this.

We have a communication problem.

Turn it over into the water.

It'll be off the sled all the way.

Carlos: They're gonna wear that boy out, man.

Dustin: Yeah.

And new guys, a lot of times,

Just have no clue what you're talking about,

Normally, we run about three or four passes,

And then we let the diver get back in there,

And he gets rid of all the big rocks.

It ain't fast, but it damn sure grabs the rocks.

Dustin: Fred, that thing looks great, man.

I'd say it looks like a great digging device.

It just wouldn't work for us.

Rockfall ravine is too narrow.

There'd be no way for us to use that thing.

...They've made it down another foot.

Ryan: The dive went pretty well today.

You know, we had a few problems up top,

But it was just great to get down there and be working again.

We're running into a lot of overburden right now

Trying to get down through the bedrock.

But, you know, I think, as we get deeper,

We're gonna start to find gold.

Dustin: We're a month short on the season,

And it's another setback.

Man, what are we gonna do?

Narrator: Dustin and his crew's path to bedrock gold

Is still blocked by a huge boulder.

We need to come up with something different.

[ saw whirs ]

I've got to have something

That'll get around rocks like that.

Narrator: Fabricator wes gets to work on a solution.

This year, we're onto rocks that make the ones

That we pulled up last year look like babies,

But we know what's underneath these boulders -- huge gold.

I want something that's gonna work

Like a cross between the baby claw and the super claw.

The metal part only fits around half of the boulder.

Of course, it's gonna have another side and two cables.

But by the time we pick that up and cinch it up,

We're gonna have a rock locked right into that thing,

That it can't go anywhere.

Narrator: Wes's plan --

Weld 12 pieces of square-sectioned steel

Into a giant claw,

Then fit a pair of cables to create a noose.

The cables can be wrapped around a boulder

When the skyline lifts the claw,

The cables lock around the boulder

So they can haul it out of the dive site.

Wes: Kind of looks like a mammoth tusks.

I think I'm gonna call this the mammoth claw.

Hey, y'all check this thing out and see what --

Anything else, we should add to it.

Dustin: Moving boulders is the name of the game today.

This is our only hope.

After you move boulders, there's going to be gold under it.

Today, carlos is gonna try out wes's new claw.

He's calling it the mammoth claw.

Narrator: Carlos wraps the mammoth claw's steel arms

Around the base of the boulder.

I'm on the rock.

Then he uses the cables to lock it into place.

We got a hell of a strain on her, brother.

James, you should step back a little bit.

Now it's moving.

Narrator: Their only hope -- wes's custom-built mammoth claw.

Carlos makes a second attempt

To stretch the mammoth claw around the huge rock.

I'm on the rock. Copy that.

Let's see if we can move it.

Now it's moving. I've got movement.

Well, we had a first success with the mammoth claw.

It worked perfect.

Wes's mammoth claw has exposed gravel

That had been buried on the creek bed

For thousands of years.

That's a lot of good dredging, man.

It's like it's just kitty litter, man.

Carlos spends two hours sending material six feet

To the sluice box above.

How you doing down there, man?

Eh, I'm done.

Hopefully, you found some gold.

Carlos's nuggets are just the start of what could be

Another six feet of gold-rich gravel.

Wes, man, brought his new toy out, the mammoth claw.

It all worked out perfectly.

Just opened up brand-new real estate.

Dustin: Every time we move a big boulder,

That's gold, under it --

Visible gold under every boulder.

This is like heaven for us.

Narrator: Half a mile up the mountain...

Paul: We got to just keep fred running today.

He's gonna be worn out.

We're going to be helping him up that hill at the end of the day.

After losing his most experienced diver.

Fred: We hope we can get some good hole dug today.

Have to get down to that bedrock on the bottom,

Try to get some gold.

You know, I just wish that he would let me in there.

Feel like you're getting ready for battle a little bit.

And unlock buried treasure at the bottom of the trifecta.

Am I ready for this?

We're just hoping that fred can run a lot of material today.

You know, it's deep, deep, deep -- the bedrock down there.

But we know if we get down to the bottom of that bedrock,

There's gonna be big gold on it.

Narrator: They've already opened a five foot by five foot hole.

Okay, fred, you're all ready to go, buddy.

Ooh! That's cold water.

But he could have another 15 feet to go.

Feel like I got about a foot of visibility here.

We got a problem.

A big rock rolled down in the hole.

Overnight, raging meltwater has rolled a huge boulder

Into fred's dive hole.

Yeah, this is a 3,000-pound rock.

Can't do any dredging.

I'll tell you what --

How about a drill bit? Drill it off the walkway.

Copy that.

So the only thing we have left is to drill it,

Put an anchor bolt in it, and pull it with the winches.

This is the longest one that we have.

And I don't think it's long enough.

Okay, fred. This drill bit's too short.

You don't have a single bit that's gonna work?

I can't engineer it up there.

Unless he can stand out there close to the rock.

Narrator: Scott heads straight into the creek.

All right, fred, where's that big rock at?

Go upstream a little bit. Go upstream.

I'm standing upstream from you.

He needs to drill a straight line

Six inches into a rock he can't see.

All right, you know how part of you

Is above the water line right now?

Drill down to the water line.

That's the water line right there.

All right, pull it over now.

Give me a bolt down there.

All right, I am going to back away.

Paul: Okay, we ready to move?

It's moving.

Narrator: By the end of his four-hour dive,

Fred's removed the boulder and got down another foot.

Great job there, man.

It's been a good day.

We got about a six-foot hole down there, about six feet wide.

Things were working just great on top.

Scott's catching on pretty quick.

I feel totally comfortable in the water with them on top.

He's doing all right.

[ laughs ]

Maybe by Friday, he'll earn enough points

To get in the water.

Dustin: Part of our skyline busted, so we have to fix it.

Narrator: At rockfall ravine,

Dustin and carlos need to complete a dangerous mission

Before they can get back to mining.

Dustin: I don't know if I should let you go down there.

You sure? Yeah, yeah, I got it, bro.

Dustin: We know from experience that the cable clamps get loose

After we put a lot of tension on our skyline.

So it's always best to tighten them up again

So I don't get my guys killed.

Whoo! Holy [bleep]!

Look at the size of that boulder!

Narrator: The huge boulder they moved on their last dive

Has slackened the skyline.

That's the lowest I've ever seen that skyline,

I can tell you that.

If you get down there and you can't figure this out,

You're not coming up.

I got it, bro. I'm with it.

The only way to fix it involves a 200 foot rappel

Into the ravine.

Holy crap, man!

You actually did this?!

One step at a time, man. Just calm yourself down.

All right. I'm taking my time slowly, slowly.

I have to tighten up all the cable clamps

On our skyline.

We already put it to the test.

I still got to get back up.

Half a mile upcreek, fred's crew has dredged a hole

Six foot by six foot deep, despite being a man down.

You've got to be kidding me.

Scott: More boulders in it.

But just as they were making good progress,

Raging meltwater has rolled more boulders

Into their dive hole for the second day in a row.

You think that's raging right now?

Wait till it rains two or three days.

It will be rolling rocks like a bowling alley.

Paul: We do a ton of work, and then it's not worth

Coming down here the next day and seeing all our work gone.

We need something to keep boulders

From just blasting into our hole.

Yeah.

Fred, what do you think about this?

The bridge is gone. It's fallen down.

Mother nature left these timbers right where they are.

They're solid.

What if we run some vertical slats down them,

Leave some space for the current to get through,

But at the same time,

That won't let the bigger rocks get through.

Do you think that would be enough to cover us

And our hole in the back there?

Boulder blocker it is. Let's do it.

Narrator: Ryan's boulder blocker plan --

Use a come-along winch to hoist up the broken footbridge.

Then slot in a set of six planks and anchor them into the creek.

The planks will allow water to pass between them,

But will block the boulders

So they can't fill the dive hole.

We'll both get waders on and get this rocking.

Looks like we're gonna need a grinder

And a couple wrenches for sure.

All right, there you go, right there.

We're getting our cables wrapped around our lumber

And we're gonna pull it slightly upstream

And separate them so we can slide some boards vertical

Right down in there.

Those vertical boards are gonna block our boulders

As they come down the creek.

And we're gonna leave a little gap in between them

So the current can still go by.

That way, this bridge isn't catching too much pressure.

[bleep].

Holy crap.

There goes our brace.

Try that again.

It may not go down easy.

...And the crew has a structure

To protect their dive hole from rolling boulders.

All right, we have successfully built us a boulder block here.

Ryan did a terrific job pounding all them boards in there.

Scott did a great job doing the support work out here.

It is not designed to slow down all the current or anything --

Just to stop large boulders

Tumbling into our hole down there.

This will put a stop to those rock right here.
