so we are in portland, oregon,

one of my favorite cities. Yeah.

And I've actually never been here

for what we're about to investigate,

which is the shanghai tunnels.

Yeah, it's a really weird, dark part of portland's history.

[ train rumbles, hisses ]

I was fortunate enough to go check the tunnels out

a few years ago, and I got a, like, brief history

about what they're all about.

I did more of a historical tour,

but it's still creepy nonetheless. Yeah.

the term "shanghaied" meant down in the tunnel,

you were kidnapped, drugged, and against your will,

placed on a boat 50 miles out to sea

on the way to china as labor.

And we're lucky enough to be investigating

a part of the tunnels which are newly opened.

and there haven't been many people down there

to kind of look around for the paranormal.

So that's what we're here to investigate.

So on that note,

let's keep portland weird and go get shanghaied.

so shanghai tunnels, as far as we know,

they were used in the late 1800s. Mm-hmm.

And people were being essentially kidnapped

and used as slaves... Yes.

...In other countries. Yeah.

But you have been here before, so... I have.

And you took the historical tour, right?

I did. Yeah.

You think tunnels, you're like, oh,

there's like subway tunnels.

Yeah. All over the city.

It's not. It's kind of like

all the basements were connected.

Because it rained a lot in portland,

the streets were always really muddy

and it was tough to transport goods around.

-Mm-hmm. -So they would use the tunnels

as a way to move things around the city.

And then someone went, "oh, that part of town

put tunnels in to move booze around

so the cops wouldn't know." mm-hmm.

And they were like, "well, we can move people through that."

-yeah. -So, it would have been used

to smuggle alcohol during prohibition.

And women were usually taken in the shanghai tunnels

for prostitution.

It was used for these kind of fight clubs.

[ punches landing ]

as well as shanghaiing people,

which was when you kidnapped them

and drugged them and put them on a boat

and sent them to most likely asia as labor.

And a lot of times they would die

before they even made it to the ships

because they would be o.D.'d on drugs they were being given.

Wow, that's crazy. Yeah.

We are now venturing into the most haunted place

not in just portland, but oregon.

And it's the tenth most haunted place in north america.

Jones: There have been so many changes since you've been here last.

We've been able to put so much into this museum.

-Jack: Cool. -Artifacts that I've collected

since I was seven, since I first went underground.

Wow.

Jack: Michael has a long history

of being the subject matter expert in the shanghai tunnels.

He teaches at portland state university

about this part of history.

Shanghai tunnels was a network

where men could be dropped through trap doors in saloons.

-Mm-hmm. -These were transient workers --

loggers, sailors,

and they would give them knockout drops,

bring underground to the ship and collect

$50 a man blood money. Both: Wow.

How many people were used in these tunnels?

3,000 in its heyday.

Is that annually or throughout the whole time?

-Annually. -Annually?

Yeah. Yeah. These men had no rights.

When they were sold to a ship captain,

these guys were not conscious, they were knocked out

until they crossed the bar into the pacific.

At that time, the captain presented men with papers

they had to sign.

If they didn't sign the papers, they were stowaways.

So overboard they went.

-Wow. -But also,

you can't forget the women who were victimized.

They grabbed them right off the street.

They held them in underground cells to break them.

How did nobody in the higher-ups --

as far as the city goes --

how did they not know this was going on?

They knew. They made money off of it.

And also, these were considered dregs of society.

When you really dive into the history

of what was happening at that time in portland,

it is horrific.

It's a history of portland

that some people don't want us talking about.

We started the tours 20 years ago.

Wow. Wow.

But now we've got two other areas

that we've been working on --

the couch street tunnels and the 6th avenue tunnels.

But the more we renovate,

the more paranormal things tend to happen.

And generally, the work crews will last an hour

and they leave.

They can't handle it.

Have you experienced anything in the tunnels yourself?

Definitely. Apparitions.

I've been scratched, bit.

Have you guys collected much evidence?

Look at this figure there.

Oh, wow, that's terrifying.

So these were on your history tours

or these are ghost hunting tours?

These are just the history tour.

But there was no active ghost hunting

when these photos were taken? There is nothing like that.

Interesting.

I really want to get down there and find out

what exactly is happening

because so many people have had these experiences.

And look, you can chalk up some people's experiences,

maybe they misidentified something

or maybe there's an environmental element down there

that's causing them to feel this way.

But what if that's not the case?

What if something beyond our scope

of understanding of science is going on?

Do you think there's something negative

in the tunnels? Yes, I think it's a prime area

for people that are involved with devil worshiping.

Have you seen evidence of this happening?

Candles, a pentagram in the dirt.

I think it absolutely could play a role

in the investigation if it, in fact, is true.

They could've been inviting in something purposefully

or unknowingly that they might not

have properly known how to handle.

Jones: My concern is before we open these two tunnels,

we make sure that it's safe for people to go.

I mean, I guess to really optimize our time here,

we're going to split up. -Yeah, for sure.

Jack: From here, katrina is going to be going

to the couch tunnels,

and I will be going to the 6th avenue tunnel.

Katrina: I'm about to meet with halie,

who's a tour guide for the tunnels,

and she is one of the very few that has never left

after having a paranormal experience.

She's going to show me where they actually happened.

and the entrance is actually inside harvey's comedy club.

I always anticipate something's going to be here.

Your imagination can play tricks on you.

But oftentimes it's not your imagination.

My views of the tunnel have changed.

Last time I was here, it was more of kind of

a historical journey, and this is a dive

into the paranormal, and it's freaky down there.

This space was actually a boxing ring.

So boxing was illegal.

They they brought it down

into the underground a lot to hide it.

So still during the time where people were being shanghaied?

-Yes. -And then what has happened

as far as the paranormal goes down here?

So there is the belief that there is the spirit

of "mysterious" billy smith in this area.

Billy smith was a boxer.

He was known for a few interesting things.

One of them was actually biting people's ears off.

[ chomp, scream ]

yeah. People have come into this area

and felt something kind of nibbling at their ears.

-Really? -Yeah.

Huh.

Anything else in this area that I need to know about?

So personally, I'd been excavating some of the dirt.

Left this area to get some water.

Set my shovel down against the wall over here.

When I came back, that shovel was standing straight up,

hovering three inches off the ground. What?

Stood there for a few seconds off the ground

and then it just fell.

-Really? -Yeah.

Levitation is not a common occurrence in hauntings.

So when you meet real people that have had experiences,

that to me suggests that it has a lot of power

if it can physically manipulate things in our world.

this area is a crib room.

Was "crib room" slang in those days

for prostitutes' rooms? Yes.

So they would actually bring one of the prostitutes down

so that men who were in the speakeasies

or at the boxing matches could be

with the women actually down in the underground.

Okay. And what have you

or other people experienced down here?

There have been a lot of shadows in this area.

Sometimes cold spots as I'm walking through.

There's a heaviness on your chest.

Do people tell you that they feel that?

People have felt that in this space.

of the 6th avenue tunnel.

or one of the loudest stomach rumbles I've ever heard.

This is one of my least favorite places

in the underground.

The shanghaiers would actually bring men

who had died in the underground

and they would burn their bodies in those furnaces.

-Wow. -I always get a feeling in here.

Sort of like something doesn't want me in this area.

Any idea what or who that is?

...Definitely something does not want me in this space.

Weird.

and the sailors and stuff like that.

-Wow. -This is where we have seen

apparitions and people walking.

Jack: I just started getting a pain on the side of my head.

Since I've been down here in the tunnels,

I just feel like a heaviness.

there is a really strange feeling down here.

The skeptic in me wants to be like,

"oh, no, that's the city."

because we're under the sidewalk here, right?

'cause the trolley car --

I mean, that's electrically powered.

But it's quite a ways away.

Yeah. I mean, that's probably, what,

20, 30 feet from the track. More than that.

There hasn't been equipment like this down here.

And they might be very curious. Yeah.

They love us telling their stories.

The elders of the chinese community

have indicated to michael

that they believe there was a cemetery here.

So it wouldn't necessarily be the victims

of shanghaied -- no, not necessarily the victims.

It does feel --

Now we're gonna go into a really intense area.

As a joke, but it's become part of this place.

strange, it's like this thing just keeps --

it's like a reminder.

It's like, "hey, something's here."

some say this is a reconstructed holding cell.

This was where the shanghaiers

were locking them up.

Oh, wow. This is how big it would have been.

Some of them were smaller. Not always this big.

Would have been completely dark in here.

They never had lights in these cells.

And anything happen as far as the paranormal goes?

We have heard what sounds like shouting

coming from cells. Really?

People kind of kicking, pounding against the door

or the walls. [ pounding, wailing ]

from stories that michael has collected,

a lot of the men would try to scream...

[ screaming ]

...Once they realized they were locked up somewhere.

I mean, we can hear the businesses up above.

They would have been able to hear them as well.

Problem with that was that the shanghaiers

paid those businesses off

to ignore what happened in the underground.

Oh, my god.

That struck a chord with me.

I mean, you have to be a pretty cold person

not to feel anything for people in distress like that.

So that was definitely a lot of information

halie just laid out.

They're building actual rooms that might resemble

something that existed in that time period.

If you're looking at that in the paranormal space,

it could be that they're essentially

building trigger objects

to create an emotional response to get paranormal activity.

That's kind of what it looked like.

I've never seen anything like that.

It wasn't, like, clear as day, like, "that's a ghost!"

it was like, "what the [bleep] is that?"

that was really weird.

when it comes to the shanghai tunnels,

it seems like a lot of the paranormal activity

is spilling upwards to the businesses above.

I'm gonna talk to the owners who own the comedy club

to see what kind of experiences they've had.

What kind of stuff have you guys experienced here

at the comedy club?

We've heard voices. Mm-hmm.

people have actually seen an apparition.

We've heard people walking down the hallways.

And we've got numerous employees

that have gone down in the basement,

heard voices, seen shadows moving,

and they won't go down to the basement now.

Yeah, I was in our dining room, and the next thing you know,

I felt like somebody

actually pulled the chair out from underneath me,

and I fell completely down on the ground.

And then, two weeks ago, I was shoved again,

and I had to call the emt paramedics

to come rescue me. Wow.

When you have this happen on a regular basis,

you start to kind of think, "well, what's really going on?"

do you think the hauntings come from the tunnels?

Yes.

at this point, I think it's best

that jack and I meet up

with a psychic medium named sarah lemos.

Katrina: Her specialty is remote viewing.

And remote viewing is a technique

where the person will sit somewhere

other than the location that you're investigating

and see if they can get any information from a distance.

So we're gonna use that ability from her

to help us narrow in on the paranormal activity

we might encounter.

I want to make sure you guys are safe.

And so one of the things that I do

is I go in, and I scan the area.

So sarah does remote viewing.

It's almost like you project yourself psychically

to a different time, space, or location

anywhere in the world.

So I will tell you that the energies down there

are more hyper-vigilant.

Please be careful when you go down.

I don't want anybody to get hurt.

There is an energy of a female spirit there.

I think this investigation is going to be scarier

than I thought it was gonna be.

We have the entire tunnels to investigate,

so it's actually gonna take a lot of time.

Our mission is to figure out

if the two new tunnels that are gonna be open to the public

are safe for people to go into.

There's been a lot of negative experiences

with the paranormal down there.

That's part of the thing that jack and I

are gonna have to suss out.

And I'm a little freaked out

where people feel like they're being bitten,

and the sixth area is set up in the holding cells.

where halie feels the most uncomfortable.

It seemed like we were getting intelligent response

from some of the knocking early on,

and then it subdued.

Michael was telling us that he found evidence of people

conducting satanic rituals in some of the tunnels.

Jack: So, in lieu of that, I want to use a spirit board

to maybe re-create something and maybe stir up some activity.

I want to see if we can provoke whatever has been knocking

considering the strange apparition I saw

kind of looked like a blonde woman.

katrina: Well, we had an interesting couple of days,

jack: We sure did.

As you know, I was under your museum

where you have the graveyard and the holding cells.

That felt more... Oppressive to me.

But overall,

I did not have a negative experience there.

You know, I didn't get pushed. I didn't get scratched.

I didn't have anything fly at me.

In the crib room,

we seemed to get some intelligent responses.

I would pretend like I needed a job.

Like, what do I have to do for this job?

What I have to do?

I'd have to have sex for money?

And it was weird because I was walking through,

and I got hit with a smell.

It was a very foul smell.

What was the smell, do you think?

[ chuckling ] well, to be very honest with you,

it smelled like a mix of dog [bleep] and rotting.

Mm.

But it was for a second, and then it went away.

so, as far as my investigation went,

it was here, underneath the comedy club.

It was interesting.

I seemed to get a lot of response from --

you know, I would knock,

and we were getting some knocking in return.

Yeah. I [bleep] heard that.

Granted, this is in the middle of a city.

Everyone's moving on the streets and cars driving by

and trams and all that. Mm-hmm.

But it did seem odd that a lot of the times,

we would get some kind of knock in return.

I have never tried knocking.

-Oh, okay. -Hmm.

Yeah, I've never heard that before either.

So, that's interesting.

And then, as the evening went on...

We decided to use a spirit board.

We asked, "are you human?"

and it was going up to "d."

and then it moved to the -- it moved back.

We ceased the session.

Mm-hmm.

And our producer said his back was hurting,

and we lifted up his shirt,

and he had three scratch marks down his back.

That's austin's back.

Wow.

They're very distinctive. You can definitely see it.

-Yeah. -Is he okay?

Yeah. Yeah, he's okay.

We smudged him with sage,

and he's doing a whole lot better.

To wrap up what you'd asked us to find out

through these investigations,

we thought that the couch street tunnels

are relatively safe.

And here, I would air on the side of caution.

We are bringing sarah,

who's the psychic that we were using,

to make sure that we didn't open up

something down there we shouldn't have.

-Mm-hmm. -Okay.

And so she's gonna go in and kind of shut it down

if there's anything there that really shouldn't be

and try and do a bit of a blessing.

We're not gonna leave you high and dry like that.

jack: So, the shanghai tunnels -- are they haunted?

Katrina: I think there's definitely

some weird things happening down there.

It's such a vast area, and this was the first

purposeful investigation that was done

in those two new sections. Yep.

So, I think it's gonna take some coming back.

And to be honest with you, I'm really unsure

about what happened down there.

I mean, lesson learned.

I don't think you can ever be too careful

when using spirit boards.

You know, you might summon something

you're not too sure how to deal with.
