Sometimes the quest

for treasure retells history.

Warren:

of billions of dollars

of buried civil war gold.

who was the field commander

of the knights of the golden
circle, buried tons of gold.

and, ultimately,

a second civil war.

my brother and I
were fascinated

with finding treasure.

cursed treasure.

Civil war gold.

our work on oak island

has shown us
there's a world of mysteries...

to other treasure hunters.

It occurs to me that...

Almost all, maybe all
of these great treasure stories,

have to do
with times of upheaval.

You know, when somebody
is invading somebody else,

and somebody has to flee.

The fall of the roman empire,
and all the stuff

that gets shifted around then.

And that's probably why
it's so significant to history.

Because almost by definition,

a great treasure
is going to be associated

with a great upheaval
of some sort.

Yeah, sometimes history drives
the-the quest for treasure,

and sometimes the quest

-for treasure, uh,
retells history.

Have you guys heard
of warren getler?

He wrote a book
called rebel gold.

Oh, yeah,
I am familiar with this guy.

'cause not only did I read
that book,

alex met him, because we
were doing our own search

for civil war gold at one time.

Isn't his theory that
at the end of the civil war

gold was stashed here and there
for, you know,

perhaps supporting the south,
which was gonna be defeated

but could rise again?

Yeah, I am familiar with that.

Hey, talk about upheaval again,

we were talking about upheaval
when you came in, and that,

you know, that's often
the source of-of treasures.

Well, you can't get
a bigger upheaval than that,

in the history
of the united states, anyway.

I mean, the conflict between
the north and the south was,

I mean, for this country,
it was traumatic.

narrator:
April 1865.

The american civil war rages
to an end.

The south lies in ruins

and its army
on the brink of collapse.

As federal troops close in

on the confederate capital
of richmond,

the rebel government abandons
the city.

Frazier:
When richmond is evacuated,

clearly, you're gonna take
two things:

One is the government archives,

so that you can keep
the government running,

and the other is the treasury,

so that you can keep
the war going.

Narrator:
Shortly before midnight
on April 2,

a battered old confederate train
departed south from richmond

toward danville, virginia,
140 miles away.

It carried confederate president
jefferson davis

and several members
of his cabinet.

-moments later,

a second train left richmond,

the so-called "treasure train,"

which, according
to historical records,

contained the remaining gold,
silver and jewelry

in the confederate treasury.

In total, in 1865 dollars,

the value would have been
around a million dollars.

If you translate that
to modern values,

you're dealing with something
between $16 million

to $30 million.

Jefferson davis was unwilling
to admit that the war was over,

the confederacy was dead.

He hoped to escape to texas,

where the confederacy
was still strong.

Or barring that,
perhaps escape to mexico,

cuba or even to England.

Frazier:
One of the things
you have to understand

about the fall
of the confederacy is,

the yankees are closing in,

And they're closing in
from the north,

they're closing in
from the south,

so these trains
are not gonna get very far.

So then, they have to take
these precious cargoes

and put them on the wagons.

And they're slow,
they're cumbersome.

Jefferson davis and his party
finally say:

"treasury or no treasury,
we got to get away."

so they leave all the heavy,
cumbersome stuff behind

and make it all the way
to irwinville, georgia.

Narrator:
In irwinville,

union troops quickly surrounded
davis's camp.

-shots rang out.

In the chaos that followed...

Davis covered himself with
a shawl to avoid recognition.

It didn't work.

Davis and his entourage
were taken into custody.

But the confederate treasury
was nowhere to be found.

When davis was found,
he had nothing on him at all.

There were a few dollars
here and there,

but the treasure
that had left richmond was gone.

Alex and I pursued
this very thing.

Tring to figure out what
happened to jefferson davis,

who was supposedly fleeing
with the money

from the, um,
confederate treasury.

What happened to it?

Matty:
I mean, warren's been studying
this for quite some time,

and he alluded on the phone
to, actually,

the treasure hunter
that he's working with

having found actual gold.

Oh, well,
now we're even more interested.

Matty :
I thought that would pique
your interest.

All right,
so you want to talk to him?

So, what do you believe...

In terms of confederate gold,
civil war gold,

and where it may be?

Well, matty, as we talked,
there is, in my view,

a great deal
of buried civil war gold

in the southwest,

potentially in the tens
of billions of dollars.

-Whoa.
-Marty: As you know, alex and I

searched for what
might have been missing

from jefferson davis, but...
But even in the grandest sense,

it was not billions of dollars.

Why do you think that billions
are still out there,

and where
would that have come from?

Can you fill that in?

Marty, that's a great question.

So, yes, the treasury
that may have been lost--

the confederate treasury
down in georgia,

with the treasure train--

that was a much smaller amount
of what was actually left

in the specific coffers
of the formal confederacy,

but the treasure
we're talking about now

is not the same thing.

It's much more massive
in quantity.

We're talking
about the treasure of...

The knights
of the golden circle.

The reason there's
more money involved is,

they were taking it from the
treasury of the united states

before the civil war broke out,
during the war,

so over the years,
pre-civil war,

civil war, post-civil war,

they were very active
as a full-throttle organization

that involved banking,
finance, transportation

and the actual heisting
of the gold

and treasures.

Narrator:
Billions of dollars in gold,

and some stolen from the
treasury of the united states?

Could an underground
confederate organization

really have made off
with that much?

And how did this group
come to exist?

In 1854,

in the wake of the growing
antislavery sentiment

in the united states,

a secret society
of proslavery advocates formed

under the name
"knights of the golden circle,"

or kgc.

Their goal was to annex

a so-called golden circle
of slave territories

under the leadership
of mexico's emperor,

maximilian I.

The area would stretch
from the southern states

down to mexico
and central america,

and extend to the caribbean.

Members of the kgc
are believed to have included

john wilkes booth,

ku klux klan leader
nathan bedford forrest,

the outlaw jesse james,

and jefferson davis.

Their primary goal was
the perpetuation

of the institution of slavery.

At the outbreak of
the american civil war in 1861,

they fought with the confederacy
against the federal government,

the union government.

After the end of the civil war,

they essentially
went underground

and continued to perpetuate
their ideas as a secret society.

Narrator:
To support their objectives,

the kgc accumulated
vast sums of money.

Some funds were amassed via
legitimate business enterprises.

Others were acquired
illegally.

Berry: The thing the knights
did best, better than anything

that they possibly could do,
was steal.

They were great thieves.

They stole gold, silver, jewels.

They took it from people, banks.

They even looted
two federal treasuries.

So they took what they had,

and they started burying it
in the ground

all across arkansas, missouri,

western tennessee,
northern mississippi,

all in that area right there.

The theory is, is that
at some point along the way,

the knights went back
after the war,

sometime between 1865 and 1912.

They went back and
they gathered all of this up.

They put it on carts
and they took it out west.

Did they take it to utah?

Did they take it to arizona?

Did they take it to new mexico?

Nobody knows.

You said that these monies
were accumulated pre-,

during and post-civil war.

So, what was their intent
from the beginning?

What was the reason--
aside from the obvious--

what was the...

Were they singularly focused
on an objective?

Warren:
The knights
of the golden circle,

as a subversive unit of
the confederacy, was two things:

It was confederate
and it was masonic.

Masonry was a very big part

-of the knights
of the golden circle.
-Right.

And so, I would say
it's some sort of

secret society mission
that has to do with templar

tradition,
rosicrucian tradition,

-and a lot of the things
you've been working on...
-Here we go.

-Where have we
heard that before?
-There's no question

there's a scottish rite
freemasonic connection between

the kgc and the people...

The group that was
involved in oak island.

-Wow.
-Marty: Holy smokes.

That's remarkable.

Matty:
So warren, were you seeing

similarities between
what these guys

are working on and what
you've been discovering?

Warren: Well, matty,
there's certainly a connection

in terms of
let's call it the ideology

between what was going on
in oak island

and what was going on with the
knights of the golden circle,

because masonry
was a very big part

of the knights
of the golden circle.

Narrator:
Members of the secret society
known as the freemasons

have had a unique relationship
with oak island

for more than 200 years,

from daniel mcinnis--
one of the three boys

who first discovered
the money pit in 1795--

to m.R. Chappell and even

future american president
franklin d. Roosevelt,

who joined the search in 1909.

To maintain secrecy,
freemasons communicate

through the language of symbols.

Numerous masonic symbols have
been discovered on oak island

that have also been found
in connection with the kgc,

such as triangles,

the letter g, representing god
as well as geometry,

and even human faces.

And in the case of the kgc,

these types of symbols
have actually

led to buried treasure.

The whole point of the knights
of the golden circle

and their treasure
was to navigate the initiated,

those on the inside, back to
these treasures after decades.

They did it through
the key symbols of masonry,

and these coded clues get you
back to these treasures.

Now, these have been
found before.

I know of at least
three or four cases

where gold bullion
or silver bars

were found by treasure hunters.

And one of those
was a guy named bob brewer.

Brewer: The first time
that I found kgc treasure--

that was probably the...

Most exciting thing
I ever did in my life.

When we go treasure hunting,
we go looking

for our symbols
and our clues and everything.

We've got

the codes and all of the maps

and things that
they leave on the ground.

They leave stone maps,
they leave

pieces of metal.
When I get close to treasure,

I start having goose bumps

and my hair starts
raising up in the back.

And it ain't never
failed me yet.

warren, do you think

the knights of the golden circle
still exist?

Uh, great question.

I actually do think,
in some form,

they do still exist.
Some of these

very large,
buried gold depositories

are guarded by the knights of
the golden circle descendants

or some secret society
organization.

So these deposits, are they...

Are they on public or
private land, if I might ask?

Well, it depends
where they are. Um,

some are on private land
and can't be recovered

without permission
of the landowner.

Others are on government land,
state or federal.

If it's on federal land,

bureau of land management,
blm land,

you can't recover them.

A lot of the treasure,
actually, guys,

is buried on federal property.

former u.S. President
millard fillmore,

was once the capital of
the fledgling territory of utah.

Today, it's famous as the home
of the historical

utah territorial statehouse,

which was built back in 1855.

to meet local resident

who is a self-described

desert detective
and treasure hunter herself.

this? What's your story?

Well, I-I've been into it
my whole entire life,

because my dad has a love
for the desert, and ever since

I was very young,
we would go out in the desert

and prospect
and look for, uh, fossils

-and all kinds...
-So you were looking
for fossils and prospecting--

you mean you were
looking for gold too? Or...

-Yeah, absolutely.
-Panning for gold?

Yeah, my dad, uh,
named a mining claim after me,

uh, when I was little,
'cause I tripped and he found

some gold there.
He called it holly's folly.

After holly's first explorations
with her father,

she began embarking
on her own treasure hunts

in the hot desert landscape
of southern utah.

She soon discovered
mysterious clues

that defied explanation.

Places that I'd been
my whole life--

there were things there
that I had not seen before.

The self-proclaimed desert
detective now believes

she has come across
symbols and codes

leading to caches of gold

buried by the
knights of the golden circle.

Probably the best way and
maybe the only way to learn

how to decode the stuff
is by going out in the field,

seeing what you see, writing
it down, keeping records,

photographing it
and keeping an open mind

to what you're seeing.

put the clues together

you can solve the mystery.

you can find the treasure.

the answers are there.

These rock faces
and the animals and the symbols.

I believe that you can find
where the treasures are

if you can decode these things.

There's a lot of masonic
influence in-in this.

the knights of the golden circle

-treasures and what's going on
in oak island.

And a lot of the methods
they used are similar:

Booby traps, tunnels,
water traps.

How about carved stones?
There's a lot

of carved stones on oak island.

The carved stones are
very similar to oak island.

There's messaging
that was coded, basically.

So holly, I'd like to talk
about some of the results

of your detective work here.

Um, I see you've
brought some stuff.

-I've got this map

-That warren referred to
in his book.

And this map is really,
really interesting.

This map of the utah territory

was printed in 1895.

Warren and holly are convinced

it contains coded messages
and purposely misspelled words

that offer clues to
the whereabouts of hidden caches

of kgc gold.

Our mountain here is
misspelled.

They left the "h" out of
pahvant butte,

a good indicator there'll be
a cache in the area.

Matty:
You're saying that's
purposely misspelled

as another code or signal
to those who know?

I think so.
And they also did

this spiral symbol, which is--

you'll see it in a lot
of the petroglyphs

as a directional as well.

Matty:
How would the kgc get symbology

and misspellings and stuff
into a map like this?

Well, they infiltrated
government agencies,

like the u.S. Geological survey.

-Wow.
-And they knew
exactly how to convey

geographic information
symbolically.

So you don't think it's just
an accidental misspelling?

Right. If you go out in
the field and you start finding

the cypher panels of the
knights of the golden circle

right there, they're telling you

you've come to the right place.

Well, is that what
I'm looking at here?

'cause I'm seeing things
that look like, uh,

-ciphers or codes of some kind.
-Mm-hmm.

-Did you take these?
-I did.

I don't know if you can
see this horse.

Matty:
Oh, yeah. Clearly.

The horse head is often
a knight symbol.

And then this is coded as well.

I've seen the "ac"
at a lot of the sites,

and five is the symbol
for silver.

So I believe it's talking
about gold and silver.

-Gold and silver.

Did-did you take these locally?

-Uh-huh.
-Wow.

Warren:
We think,

based on holly's amazing

treasure detective work,
that there are probably

20 major depositories
around here.

Interesting.

And jesse james,
who was the field commander

of the knights
of the golden circle,

buried tons of gold.

-So hold on. Jesse james,
famed outlaw...
-Right.

He was actually operative

right here in
the utah territory.

-Jesse james? The jesse james?
-Jesse james.

Matty: This is getting better
and better.

I didn't expect jesse james.

And all here.
He was-he was here.

Yes.

Jesse james operated
in this area, definitely.

New mexico, arizona, utah.

And there's a lot of evidence
for why

they revered him so much,
because of his ability

to be so mobile.

Narrator: Jesse james was born
on September 5, 1847,

near kearney, missouri.

During the civil war,
while still in his teens,

jesse is believed
to have been part

of a pro-confederate
guerilla group,

led by william quantrill,
that attacked and massacred

union soldiers.

Warren:
During the civil war,
he was a very young

and very successful fighter
in the confederacy.

But after the war,
he became a so-called "outlaw."

In 1866,

jesse and his brother frank

robbed the clay county savings
bank in liberty, missouri,

killing an innocent bystander.

the gang's murderous legend
soon took hold

as they held up banks
across the midwest

-and western united states.
-Hands up!

Jameson:
Few people got more headlines
than frank and jesse james.

They got the publicity,
they got the notoriety,

they got the fame.

Narrator:
But could there be more

to the story of jesse james

than just robbing banks
and holding up stagecoaches?

Warren:
Well, jesse james
is traditionally known

as an outlaw of the wild west,
and he was that.

But what-what isn't known
is what did he do

with all that money
that he was stealing?

He never got rich.

According to the research
I've been doing, and others,

he was a leading member

of the knights
of the golden circle.

Nelson: According to the theory,
he was, in fact,

financing the kgc and,
ultimately,

what would've
been a second civil war.

Warren:
All that money that jesse james
was stealing

went into
the underground coffers,

the vaults of the kgc.

Some was stolen
from the union coffers,

union mint, others were
the results of smelting

their own gold.

Jesse james was said
to have been

on the inside of train hits

that involved payment
from the insurance company

that he controlled.

James organized the accumulation
of the wealth

and the protection
of this wealth,

not just until he was
allegedly killed,

which was, you know, 18-- 1880s.

But we say he deliberately
faked his death

so that he could continue
in this role post-civil war.

Did he have a-a calling card

or something that makes
you think, like, when you,

when you get to a site,
was there some reason

you would think this
is a jesse james operation?

We have a lot of evidence that
jesse james put his signature

on a lot of these treasures
and on the carvings.

Two backward j's, j.J.,

-for jesse james, yeah.
-No kidding? J.J.

-Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
-Wow.

There's a lot of money
involved here.

Some of these sites,
as holly will attest,

-are actively guarded.
-Very active.

-Really?
-Yes.

Do you think, warren,
that these are relatives

of the original golden circle
people or do you think

it's a, it's a whole
separate thing,

that they just happen
to know where the money is?

Well, in some
local environments,

it's probably the descendants,

the legacy "sentinels" watching.

It's their role.
Don't touch it, guard it.

So, I warned holly
in her travels,

she has to wary
'cause she could be watched.

Have-- has anything
happened to you?

There's been a few instances
that have had me very worried

and I was never
gonna go out again.

-Like what? Give me an example.
-Um...

I've been out in the desert and
a black helicopter showed up.

About that same time
there was a man that came

in a security vehicle
and he asked me

some different,
weird questions.

-Really?
-Yes.

To let you know,
"we're watching you."

like, I'm-I'm being watched.

Another reason I believe
that I've been-- being watched

is multiple times I've gone out
and studied the site.

And I've gone back
within a few days

and there would be footprints
following me around every spot

that I've been, and some of
these locations are very remote.

There was a cave
that I went to one time,

and I went back,
probably two days later,

and there were big footprints
in the dust of the cave there.

And maybe it was just
coincidence, I don't know.

Most people think
nothing of it,

but it scared me a lot.

So, families going way back,
generations after generations,

swore blood oaths
to protect this money.

Kind of scary.
I think I've been shot at once,

when I was
out in the desert one day

and I heard this sound,
it scared me to death.

It was just a "zwing,"
kind of a metallic sound.

And my brother said,
"I think that's a

'bullet ricocheting
off of a rock' sound."

-I got in my vehicle and left.
-Matty: Really? I got to say,

this is not what I expected
when we came to utah.

I mean, this is
a whole different level.

I mean, this sounds, uh,
I hate to be overdramatic,

but it sounds
like it could be dangerous.

It could be.

I-I would love to lay eyes
on some of these things.

I have to see them for myself.
Is that possible?

bringing you

On previous explorations,

holly has discovered

that this site possesses
unique characteristics

that would have made it
a prime location

for members of the kgc to carve

symbolic messages.

One is the way in which
the rocks reflect the sun.

This is literally like
someone put a spotlight on it.

but it seems like
it wants to be found.

Sometimes you can see those
for miles and miles.

And the symbol is strong
as you come up here, but then

-as you get closer,
it almost disappears.

They were
all about shadow signs,

and this is a sun sign.

-What do I mean by that, right?
It-it catches the sun.

It's deliberate.
It's on a reflective stone.

Does this symbol
mean anything to you, warren?

Well, this is a symbol

that's been used before
in treasure sites.

I mean, it's-it's kind of,
uh, to me,

implying
that there could be a treasure

inside of a cave or a tunnel.
