It truly feels like
the fellowship's

- I think it's leather.

See,
this is what we're looking for.

This is an awesome find.

Not only is it man-made,

this goes all the
way back to 1500.

It could've been used for
construction of the money pit.

Wow.

There is an
island in the north atlantic

where people have been
lookig for an incredible treasure

for more than 200 years.

So far,
they have found a stone slab

with strange
symbols carved into it,

mysterious fragments
of human bone,

and a lead cross whose
origin may stretch back

to the days of the
knights templar.

To date, six men have died
trying to solve the mystery.

And, according to legend,

one more will have to die

before the treasure
can be found.

It is the start of another
new day on oak island.

Another sweaty
day in quarantine.

- Got to keep the legs moving.

But for brothers
rick and marty lagina,

it marks the start
of their second week

in a 14-day
mandatory quarantine...

- 50 more to go.
- Perfect.

And then we'll plant them.

...One that
is required of anyone

granted special
permission to enter canada

from the united states
during the global pandemic

that has swept the globe
since earlier this year.

All right. We got my dad set up on a,
uh, bike trainer.

Passing them like
they're standing still, baby.

And sharing
the tie with rick and marty

is their nephew peter fornetti

along with marty's
son alex lagina.

That's how we're killing time.

Waiting to get on the island.

I'm growing a beard, too.

- Yeah. - But I will shave it

on the day we are free.

Although rick and
marty are each staying in houses

on the mainland,
across mahone bay from oak island,

they are not allowed to leave
their respective properties.

They are also prohibited
from having personal contact

with any third parties,
or even visiting oak island.

Uh, it's a little frustrating,
being in quarantine,

um, because, uh,
I'm used to freedom,

you know,
to go about my business.

Normally, we immediately,
without stopping or passing g,

we go directly to oak island,
because we want to see

what's happened
since we were here last.

It looks pretty good,
actually. I'm impressed.

- We're gonna stay on this piece of property...
- Mm-hmm.

- ...Until we get the all clear.
- Right. And...

Then we're gonna
go to oak island

and we're gonna unleash
a firestorm of activity.

Fortunately,
even with the laginas stuck in quarantine,

treasure-hunting
activities on oak island

have been able to make progress.

So, I'm gonna continue
to excavate this unit here

and hopefully get to
the bottom of this today.

Oh, absolutely.

- We want to date when it started.
- Yeah.

On lot 15, for example,

archaeologists laird niven,

aaron taylor and david macinnes,

a direct descendant of the
first oak island treasure hunter,

daniel mcginnis,
continue their careful investigation

of the remains of
a stone structure,

one which they believe
could be connected

to the construction of the
original oak island money pi.

It was also in this same area

that veteran surveyor and
treasure hunter fred noln

noted the existence of a
possible tunnel entrance

on a recently discovered map.

A tunnel entrance which fred
believed could lead directly

to the fabled oak
island treasure vault.

If we turn over rocks here
and we got organics under it,

that will date the beginning
of whatever this is.

All right. Let's get digging.

As far as the lot
15 feature is concerned,

and the proximity of that
structure to the money pit,

is there a possible
connection there?

I think it's too early,
but I'm very interested

now that the project is underway

to see what they come up with.

come take a look at this.

I'm coming down on
this really flat stone

with a really
interesting edge on it.

Hmm. That's been beveled.

Yeah. Possibly.

- Look at how flat that is.
- Yeah.

It's kind of not like anything else,
is it?

Oh, that looks interesting.

Ah. It looks like, possibly,
a drilled hole in here.

Wow. That looks pretty cool.

- That's-that's handmade.
- Yeah.

- It doesn't look natural, does it?

You've got a drilled hole

and a possibly beveled edge,
like it might have been cut

- to fit into another stone.
- It's cool.

A drilled stone?

Found in the mysterious
structure on lot 15?

In 1895,

treasure hunter frederick
blair located a drilled stone

just northeast of what he
believed to be the money pit.

More than four decades later,
in 1937,

fellow treasure hunter
gilbert hedden found another

near smith's cove,
and on a perfect east-west line

from blair's discovery.

Since then,
a number of surveyors and treasure huntes

including the late fred nolan,

have found similar surface
markers across the island

believed to be part of
an elaborate treasure map

leading to where the
legenday vault lies buried.

Could this drilled
stone on lot 15

be another important
piece of that puzzle?

It certainly looks like
it's been manipulated

by people, right?

Mm-hmm. - You know who

who would be interested
in this is steve guptill.

this is a-a potentially important stone,

and perhaps if we can get a clue

of what it's sitting on
or what it functioned as.

If it was placed intentionally,

we know that, uh,
it was brought from somewhere else

and put there for
a specific purpose.

Uh, I'm pretty excited about
what it potentially could be.

So, steve, I was just

- excavating this unit here.
- Mm-hmm.

And I came down on this.

Wow.

I mean, the fact that this
is buried is a huge clue.

So, this is really,
really important for us.

So, what I think we should
do is we should get rick

and maybe the guys on the phone.

and I think they'd
be pretty interested.

Excellent. We've, uh,
found something interesting on lot 15.

I just uploaded some
photos for you to look at.

It's actually pretty intriguing.

So, we're digging on the
edge of our feature here.

And, uh,
aaron uncovered this rock,

which doesn't look like much

until... david,
do you want to point out the hole?

- Oh, yeah. - Yeah.

There we have a drilled hole.

And, as well,
there's a flake on there.

And lo... almost a
beveled edge on that side.

Huh.

- Hey, guys.
- Do you want to explain to them?

Sure. To me,
they look like an old survey mark.

Surveyors would have
done that years ago.

So,
this could've been used in conjunction

with others on the island
as a directional piece

or a survey control piece.

It would be tied to something.

Because if they were all
done in the same time period,

they should all match.

We know there have been a number

of drilled stones that...
Some of which have been lost

over the hundreds
of years of discovery.

If there was a master plan

to what was
originally done here,

you would need some
sort of surveying apparatus

or, uh,
the ability to lay down a grid.

So,
this location was important enough

to put a site line there.

So, that's-that's very,
very good,

but we need to be brought
up to speed in person.

So, it may have been here
when the people arrived here

and they just left it
there on the ground.

So,
if this stone predated the structure,

then it has some other meaning.

The key is getting
to the bottom of it

and then we can speculate.

You know, and rick,
you-you got to go look at that.

I know you're dying to
go look at that right now,

because you're the rock-meister.

I am singularly intrigued
with the drilled stone.

You always fall back to
personal experience, righ?

And I've built thousands
of feet of stone wall.

So, my suspicion is that

the drilled stone has
nothing to do with this feature.

It was just an asset.

So, I'm very interested

in proceeding.

concerned about is this proliferation

of archaeologists
on this island.

to retrace the so-called
barringer survey,

a large-scale scanning
and survey operation

conducted in 1988

by dan blankenship and
his partner david tobias.

It was this barringer survey
that identified the location

of a number of possible
tunnels leading from lot 15

towards both the
swamp and the money pit.

It also indicated four targets
that might contain quantities

of nonferrous metals,
like gold and silver,

located some 100
feet below ground.

- You lead me to it.
- Sure.

Right here, doug,

is where that tunnel
enters the cave-in pit.

- Okay. We're gonna use red for that tunnel. Right?
- Yep.

That's the end of the tunnel
going into the cave-in pit.

Let's head back and
put the junction point in

this is the start of the other tunnel.

You know what's
interesting about this point?

This is where gary
found the cross.

This is south of
the work we did last year.

that we were in this whole zone,

digging with that long-reach excavator,
down to...

What was that capable
of? 50 feet in depth?

- 50 feet.
- Yep. We just couldn't go deep enough with it.

This-this... We were
in the right zone,

according to the
barringer survey.

We just didn't know it.

That looks like a big hole.

Last year,
while the team was digging

in the uplands area
of smith's cove...

It looks like a tunnel to me,

going that way.

...At a depth of some 50 fee,

heavy equipment
operator billy gerhardt

discovered what they
all believed to be part

of the fabled booby-trapped
flood tunnel system,

designed to protect

the original money
pit treasure vault.

Unfortunately, the muddy,
soaked ground surrounding the pit

proved to be too unstable
to continue digging,

and the oak island team wee
forced to abandon their searc.

Is it possible that they were
actually digging their way

toward not just a tunnel
but something of great value?

Something that was a
mere 50 feet deeper below?

I think some of
this I-is so incredible

in how it aligns that I think

maybe we should call
rick and just fill him in on it.

you find a map,
and it's a treasure map.

Well,
the barringer survey is sort of like that.

It says here are four
nonferrous targets.

Well,
nonferrous at depth on oak island... What?

Do... people weren't
burying aluminum cans.

So,
what does that suggest? Gold and silver.

Okay, give me something

to orient off of.

We are not far from
dynamite hole number three.

- That is somewhat to the west,

but not-not far.

That's got to be pretty close

to where we dug that great,
big, deep hole then, isn't it?

It would have been

on the outer edge of the great,
big hole.

Right where billy
would've been sitting.

Billy was sitting on the money.

So,
billy was right on the money.

Well,
he'll never live that down.

This is an area
where spoils removed

from various excavations
in the money pit

have, over the years,
been used as landfill.

They are hoping that
after years of soil erosion

due to a number of
harsh winter storms,

any valuable objects or
artifacts are now closer

to the surface and thus
easier to detect and retriev.

Anything that's been flushed
in and out of the winter storms,

they're now spread out
around the end of isaac's point.

It's a great opportunity, mate.

Let's grab the gear
and get stuck in.

Ooh, I like it.

The best way of searching
the area is to zigzag along

from the tree line down
to the big boulders.

There could be
anything anywhere.

I've got the large coil on.

I know this can
get small targets.

Anything that seems
like it could be older iron

or, you know,

a good size, I say we dig,
'cause I'd like to recover it.

We'll go all the way to the end here,

That is definitely
not iron. It's just there.

- Definitely. Yep.

I would bet your last
dollar that this is not iron.

A pewter spoon-bowl.

That's what that looks like.

It's got that right shape,

and it would've been elongated spoon-bowl,
like that.

It would've gone t-towards,
like, a rounded front.

If it's pewter,
that's your typical mid-1700s, mate.

So, that could've been a depositor,
maybe, or even,

a-a searcher in the money pit,

- yeah.
- ...That was eating using that spoon.

Yeah. If it is a pewter spoon-bowl,
mate,

that was the poor
man's silver of the day.

It's not exactly a "super bowl,"
but it is nice.

This is what I was hoping for,

This ain't no heavy-duty pickax.

- This is a tunneling pick.
- Yes, it is.

And look at how short it is.

A tunneling pick,

found amongst spoils
from the money pit?

Last year,

while inspecting spoils
from the rf-1 caisson...

...The same caisson that
recovered wooden beams

believed to date back
to the construction

of the original money pit shaft,

the team found a pick

that blacksmith carmen
legge suggested could predate

the money pit by
over two centuries.

Is it possible this pickax
head could have been used

for the construction
of the money pit

well over 200 years ago?

All those years ago,
it was lost at the money pit,

and then ends up
being dumped here,

and then we retrieve it.

It's a fantastic artifact
from oak island.

Doesn't get any better than that,
mate.

It's what we're searching for,

and that's what we're finding,
mate.

beneath the vault.

By carefully sifting through
the remaining content,

the team hopes to
find further evidence

of the money pit collapse,

the treasure itself.

this is what we're looking for.

That's incredible.

We're in the shaft
six tunnel area.

So the vault collapsed,
and potentially,

some of that vault rushed
into the shaft six tunnel.

And that piece right
there could prove that.

I think that is possibly
depositor-related.

This is an awesome find.

Leather found in
the spoils from caisson 8-a?

Over the years,
the drilling operations

in the money pit
area have turned up

various leather artifacts,

including just last year,
when bits of what appeared to be

leather bookbinding
were discovered

in this very same caisson.

Along with pieces of paper
recovered from other shafts

dug in the money pit area,

these pieces of leather
bookbinding support

a number of ongoing theories
that the oak island treasure

might not only consist of
god or priceless artifacts,

but equally priceless
historical documents.

We got three
archaeologists here,

so where we at?
Bring us up to speed.

- Uh, I can start wherever you like.
- Well, you know what,

- first thing I'd like to do is just peer down in here.
- Yeah, have a look.

- Have a look.
- It looks a lot different than it does on the tube.

Look at the way it's built.

It kind of looks
like a tunnel entrance.

Although rick
and marty had each kept

close tabs on the work
that had been going on

during the past several week,
they believe

there is nothing quite
like examining the various

search sites and
artifacts firsthand.

That's glacial till right there.

That soil's been there
since the last ice age,

14, 15,000 years ago.

- There could be a tunnel underneath it.
- Yeah.

But if there's a tunnel,
it's deeper. It's way down deep.

I'm evaluating
what this thing is.

So what is this thing?

It's not just a natural pile of stone,
or it's not

just a pile of stone,
you're sure?

-Something was intentionally

- built on this. - You're sure?

- Absolutely. That's 100%.
- We're positive with that.

That doesn't happen
very often on oak island.

So now we know it's man-made.

I think if you look
at the evidence,

you've got a continual
burning event,

you've got liquid...

You've got pooling areas.

When you add up everything...

This is why david
and I are so certain

that it is a pine tar kiln.

Will this produce tar
in sufficient quantities

to actually use it?

- Seems like a very small operation.
- That's a good question.

So this goes all the
way back to-to 1500,

when early european
fishermen first started being here.

You can't buy pine tar.

You either got to bring it with you,
if you're here,

or you got to
manufacture it on-site.

So this is
historically important.

Wow.

Although tar may
have been made on oak island

for the purpose of
waterproofing ships,

it has been speculated
that the unique placement

of a pine tar kiln on lot 15

was most likely for the
purpose of waterproofing

some kind of underground
tunnel or shaft.

The most important artifact
on this site is charcoal.

Charcoal is throughout
this whole site.

That can only be produced
at a site where you have

repetitive burning.

We always assumed that this
was used for marine purposes,

but it could have been used
for construction of the money pit.

What first brought the
people to look at the money pit

was a light at night, right?

Perhaps someone
was making tar at night.

- Wow. - Really?

During the 18th century,

reports and bonfires lights

in the dead of
night on oak island

created an unsettling
curiosity for those

living on the mainland.

In 1795,
after witnessing this phenomenon,

daniel mcginnis
and his two friends,

john smith and anthony vaughn,

traveled to oak
island to investigate.

Although by the time
they arrived on the island,

all traces of the strange
lights had vanished,

it wasn't long before they found

a large circular
indentation on the ground...

Right near the base
of an old oak tree.

An indentation which
later revealed itself to be

the entrance to
what is now known

as the oak island money pit.

If it is a pine
tar kiln and it...

By their own description,
the archeologists...

It's a rudimentary one,
seemingly fashioned hurriedly,

might there have
been a singular use

as relates to the
original depositional work

in the money pit?

That-that's exhilarating.
That's-that's exciting.

If you're digging the money
pit and we know water is an issue,

they might've needed
pine tar to seal that up, too.

It could've been a,
a quick mission

to make pine tar
to dig the money pit.

Whenever we dig,

we almost find a new question.

And we find enigmas
wrapped up in questions.

- We want answers.
- Yeah.

There's only one
way to find answers

and that's to, uh,
get back to work.

There's some artifacts

to reinforce it with rocks.

And so we went and
metal detected the point

and we brought you
today what we found.

And I think it's kind
of obvious what it is.

But...

Yeah.

A pickax dating
back to the mid to late 1700s?

Could this be one of the tools

used to dig one of
the mysterious tunnels

that are rumored to run
through the money pit area?

Or could it have been used

to dig the money pit itself?

Later that afternoon,

shortly after alex
and jack return

from their visit
with carmen legge,

rick and marty lagina
convene this year's

first official meeting
in the war room.

There are a couple guys
standing by in the research center.

structure on lot 15,

made two potentially
significant discoveries.

That's an ax!

An ax-head believed

to be used for
ship maintenance...

oh! No way!

...And what appeared to
be an ancient coin of unknown origi.

That is an old coin!

Wow! Let's see it!

And it was this intriguing find

that gary promised to share
only when rick and marty

returned in person
to oak island.

This is worth waiting for, guys.

When you get out of quarantine,

this will lift your spirits,

You're really not
gonna show this to us?

So what was in your top pocket?

Jack and I

found a nice,
chunky piece of iron,

which I believe

is an ax.

You can see where the
socket was broken there.

- Mm-hmm.
- And just the shape of that,

the way it comes down like this,

which would put it
to the early 1700s.

1720s...

1740 era.

It's definitely a
ship's rigging ax.

Feel that, rick.

Feel how heavy that is.

You know that's an old piece of iron,
mate.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah, I mean,
that's a really substantial piece of iron.

No. That's a good find,
gary. That's a real good find.

- And-and, laird, do you concur about early 1700s?
- Yeah.

- It fits in place there.
- Okay.

Good find. Now,
I know this wasn't in your top pocket.

- No. Definitely not.
- Because you,

you weren't tilting to one side.

Oh, yeah.

That's not the only
thing we've got to show.

- Yeah? - I know

you said that's
the biggest find,

but, you know,
size doesn't always matter, laird.

Yeah. It's a coin.

It's a coin with a
square hole in it.

But the thing about this is,
it's got some

heft to it. It's got that...

Thickness to it.
And if you look at it

closely you can see
some kind of symbols on it.

You can see embossing almost up,

- up along here. - Yeah.

Do you have an idea what it's made out of,
gary?

Yeah. Copper.

It is copper? - Gary: Yeah.

To me, when you find a-a coin

with a square
hole in it like that,

it's an old colonial-era
coin that the locals

decided to deface it.

I think this was in
someone's pocket.

Think about the coins that
we've found in that area.

Who's to say this isn't

from 16, early 1700s,
or even older?

I think we're
getting down to an early

date that there was
activity on the island.

- That is good.
- If there's any

remnants of a design on there,
that will be very helpful.

Well, let's do it.

Let's find out what the
thing wants to tell us.

We have all kinds of dates

in the early 1700s now,
late 1600s,

and, of course,
some going back even farther.

The real question that perennially pops up,
to me,

is was that when
treasure was placed here,

or something entirely different?

Artifacts tell a story.

It's remarkable
this place... I mean,

we've got a french connectio,
we've got british military.

You know, that aligns with
a significant amount of find.

But we need more experts
or technologies to weigh in.

There's plenty of
evidence that something

super significant happened here.

Yeah.

All right, well,

this island has
teased us long enough.

- Let's this year find it, shall we?
- Yeah.

For the laginas and their tea,

a year that has brought
forth great obstacles

is already offering the
promise of great breakthrough.

Breakthroughs that have
only made rick and marty

more determined to repeat

as they struggle to
make up for both lost time

and lost lives.
