Young Blood

Episode 1

[Song]

During the Qingli era of the Song Dynasty,

Song faced off with Kingdom of Xia and Liao Dynasty,

and fought with them endlessly.

In the early years of Qingli era, Xia troops invaded.

The Song Frontier Army was ordered

to guard the country.

The turning point of the war

was the battle of Qichuan village.

The Army was trapped in Qichuan village

and was ambushed by Xia troops.

At this critical time,

Yuan Boqi, God of War of the Frontier Army,

[Song]

encouraged soldiers to fight to the death,

hoping to guard the country with their blood.

However, their bravery could not save the day.

In the battle of Qichuan village,

the Song army were almost annihilated.

After this battle, Song and Xia had a truce and made peace.

The battle was over,

but the suspicion and hatred

arising from the battle

developed quietly in the dark.

Two years later,

the repressed force finally broke out.

[Song]

[Qingli Era, Kaifeng]

Are you Yuan Boqi?

Yes.

I’m Liang Zhu, officer of Xuanwu Army under the Palace Division.

I have orders to arrest you.

It’s Officer Liang,

ranking first among the imperial guards.

Two years ago, when Xia and Song negotiated peace,

Fan tampered with the negotiation document.

It is exposed now.

Xia’s document disrespected to the Song Dynasty.

Minister Fan modified the words

to make peace negotiation succeed.

Modifying the negotiation document without permission

is deceiving the emperor.

Besides,

he is no longer a minister.

It has nothing to do with me

whether Mr. Fan is a minister or not.

You are the general of Fan Mansion.

If Fan did other things

that deceive the emperor,

tell them to me.

No such a thing.

I heard that two years ago, in the battle of Qichuan village,

you fought alone against hundreds of enemies

with your sword.

Your swordsmanship is great.

Show it to us.

What does it have to do

with what happened today?

For the defeat of the Frontier Army in Qichuan village two years ago,

what do you have to say?

Xia troops set up ambushes,

and our army was defeated,

which is clearly written in the military report.

The battle of Qichuan village suffered a disastrous defeat.

The whole army was wiped out.

But why are you the only one

who survived?

I just was lucky.

You were lucky,

or the Xia troops intentionally let you go?

Draw out your sword.

Officer Liang is outstanding in martial arts.

I candidly admit defeat.

Alright.

I have plenty of time

to play with you.

Guards.

Yes.

Watch him carefully.

Yes, sir!

[Zhanyi House]

Officer Liang.

The Palace Division just asked us to learn about

the mistakes in the reforms by Minister Fan.

Have you gone too far?

Does he have a brother?

The Yuan family does have a little boy.

He is also in Kaifeng.

What's his name?

Yuan Zhongxin.

Where is he?

At the Imperial College.

[Imperial College]

[Imperial College]

Would you borrow me your book later?

Okay, no problem.

Thanks.

Officer, I’ve make it clear. He lives in this room.

Is Yuan Zhongxin here?

Go. Go.

Quickly. Go. Go.

Hurry.

It’s not the academic officer.

Who is Yuan Zhongxin?

Yuan Zhongxin is out.

How do you know?

He just jumped out of the window.

Do you have anything to tell him?

I'll pass it on for you.

He is Yuan Zhongxin.

Who are you?

I’m Wang Kuan, student of the Imperial College.

Why are you here?

I share the room with him.

You talk first.

I’ll make some hot water for you.

Are you Yuan Boqi’s brother?

I hope not.

Do you have anything to do?

Nothing.

Then why are you following me?

I’m following him.

Why are you following me?

Officer Zhang asked me to follow you

to see what you do every day.

No wonder I've always been caught

in gambling recently.

It’s you who tip off the officer.

We are on duty.

Don’t follow us.

No.

Why?

I promised the officer.

So I have to keep my promise.

Drive him away.

You have no right to drive me away.

Without military orders,

you cannot ground people at will in Kaifeng city.

Who said that?

His Majesty.

Are you a nerd?

Stop.

How dare you disrespect His Majesty!

Let’s go.

[Zhanyi House]

If anyone dares to break in,

put him under arrest.

Yes, sir.

He looks decent,

but actually he is very cunning.

Yuan Boqi is waiting for you.

Come with me.

What’s going on?

Yuan Boqi is suspected of treason.

I was ordered to interrogate him.

Officer.

May I have a word?

Why did you bring me here?

Yuan Boqi is your brother.

You should know

what he has done.

You’d better

say it out now.

May I have your name please?

Liang Zhu.

General Liang.

I finally got you.

What do you mean?

He betrayed his master for honors,

took bribes and broke the law,

incurred the greatest popular indignation,

and did all sorts of evil things.

I've always been ashamed,

but I can do nothing.

Now the law is no respecter of persons.

And General Liang is here

to catch such a traitor.

I have nothing to give you

but four words

Savior of the Song.

You just said he took bribes, broke the law,

and betrayed his master for promotion.

He is really a flagitious man.

Do you have any evidence?

What evidence do you need?

We can think of a way.

What’s the way?

I can be your witness

to prove that he collaborated with Liao

or Xia.

If you need physical evidence,

I can also help to make some.

Depends on what you need.

You mean false evidence?

As long as you get things done,

flexible means are available.

What do you think?

He is your brother.

He’s my half-brother.

He is a legitimate son,

while I’m a concubine's son.

If he is safe and sound,

I can never take over

the Yuan family's business.

If you can confirm his crimes

and put him in jail for a lifetime,

I will share

the Yuan family's wealth with you.

Get out.

General Liang.

If you need any help, just let me know.

It’s my pleasure.

Don’t let him out.

I didn't expect

your half-brother

is such a man.

You shouldn't have told him.

If you are unable to stand such a villain,

you should draw your sword and kill him.

It’s better for you to kill him in anger

than to wait for death here.

What a loser!

What is he charged with?

The imperial guards keep a close watch on the house.

Your brother must have been arrested.

What is he charged with?

Treason.

It might be under investigation.

Why don’t they send the case to the Patrol Division for investigation?

I don’t know.

And I don’t want to know.

Officer Zhang.

Today Yuan Zhongxin

gambled with others in the room.

It doesn't matter.

Yuan Zhongxin.

Today’s on,

you have been expelled from the Imperial College.

Take care of yourself.

You’ve packed everything for me?

Thank you.

Where are my fifty taels?

What do you mean?

Please give me the money back.

I didn't see your money.

Oh.

You want to blackmail me?

That's the life-saving money.

Giving me 25 taels is also okay.

How dare you

insult my reputation?

You…

I didn’t hit him.

Well…

He has a normal breath

and an even pulse.

He is fine.

I believe what Wang Kuan says.

Let’s go.

Is he really fine?

May I ask

why Yuan Zhongxin is expelled from the Imperial College?

This is the order of the superior.

What is the reason for the order?

You…

It’s none of your business.

Why do you ask so much?

If there is no reason,

how can the student be expelled?

Yuan Zhongxin has numerous misdeeds.

He deserves it.

He can be admonished for disrespect to teachers.

He can be punished for his misdeeds.

If it is not a felony,

there is no reason to expel him from the Imperial College.

You…

This is an order from the Ministry of Rites.

Is there a written order?

Are you a nerd?

Stay here and wait for me.

Why are you following me?

You haven't answered me.

You really don’t know or just pretend not?

Please give me an answer.

Come here.

Do you know who Yuan Zhongxin’s brother

Yuan Boqi works for?

Minister Fan.

He was admitted to the Imperial College

for the sake of Fan Mansion.

Now that the reforms fail,

who dares to let him stay here?

So,

Yuan Zhongxin did not make any mistakes.

Just because

his brother is subordinate to Fan Mansion.

I disagree.

Wang Kuan.

I know you are decorous.

But you have to see the current situation.

I can see it clearly.

That’s good.

But I still don't agree.

Think it out yourself.

If it wasn't for you,

I could blackmail hundreds of coins.

A gentleman concentrates on nine things.

He should be sincere when he speaks.

How could he talk falsely and deceive?

Who has never told a lie in his life?

I am.

I admire you greatly.

I really admire you.

Where are you going to?

You also heard that.

I was expelled from the Imperial College.

It's not fair.

This world is not fair.

What can you do?

How long are you going to follow me?

If your brother really did something wrong,

he should be put in jail.

If he is suspected of treason,

the Privy Council and the Ministry of Punishments should step in.

How could he be locked up in his house?

You ask me?

I don’t know either.

This thing is lawless.

He's not your family.

Why do you care about him?

You are very close to him.

What makes you say that?

I was asked

to see what you do every day.

I’ve been watching you for a long time.

What the hell do you want?

It depends on what you want.

I just want you not to follow me.

With your temperament, you would save him.

Do you think I'm the kind of person who is bold,

affectionate and righteous?

I think so.

Are you crazy?

Have I misjudged anyone?

If I don't admit it,

you will follow me all the time, right?

Okay, I admit.

I want to save him.

I want to fight against imperial guards.

I want to court death.

Is that okay?

I admit everything you say.

Can you leave now?

I’ll go with you.

What are you saying?

I’ll go with you to save him.

Do you know my brother?

No, I don’t.

Then why do you want to do such a crazy thing?

I pursue integrity all my life.

Since there is injustice,

I can't stand by.

You are asking for trouble.

I won’t do crazy things with you.

I think you will.

I also think so.

Who are you?

Childe Yuan,

I can help you save him.

[To Yuan Zhongxin]

[You are invited to Ecstasy Gate at Nanxie Street outside the old Cao Gate tonight.]

Ecstasy Gate.

A new brothel.

Address?

Nanxie Street outside the old Cao Gate.

Go see it.

[Ecstasy Gate]

[Ecstasy Gate]

I'm afraid it's a deserted building.

Don't you think it's weird?

You are invited to come here at night.

Do you think it’s night talk with ghosts?

The deserted building in the day

takes on a new look at night?

[Ecstasy Gate]

[Paradise House]

Do you think there are ghosts?

A gentleman would never talk about supernatural and superstitious things.

Interesting.

Only I was invited.

I know.

Then why are you following me?

The girl we met in the day looks familiar.

I seem to have seen her somewhere.

Your lover?

It is the darkness in the world

that makes you unruly and ignorant.

So,

it's not your fault.

Why do I think you are scolding me?

Excuse me.

An invitation is required

for tonight’s banquet.

[To Yuan Zhongxin]

[You are invited to Ecstasy Gate at Nanxie Street outside the old Cao Gate tonight.]

Who is Childe Yuan?

I am.

The invitation shows

that only you are invited,

so he can't go with you.

This way, please.

I can’t help it.

Bye.

Good wine.

Here are you.

It’s the brothel, isn’t it?

I've been waiting so long,

but no girl comes here.

It’s so boring.

Why did you send me an invitation?

Take it easy.

Exotic singing and dancing.

Music.

That’s more like it.

You didn’t come until I got angry.

Your dress looks beautiful.

Who are you?

Wang Kuan.

Who are you?

Jing.

Miss Jing.

You look blue.

Is something bothering you?

It’s not a big deal.

I'm going to dance tonight.

I wish you succeed.

But I can’t dance.

Since you can't dance,

you can explain to the person

who arranged you to dance.

But,

I have talked big before.

If I say I can’t now,

I will be a bit embarrassed.

Why did you talk big?

Because Zhao is awesome.

She knows everything.

Then it’s my turn.

If I said I knew nothing,

it would be a shame for me.

So I said I could dance.

Your job

is not easy.

Yes.

Don’t worry.

Now that you have promised,

just do it.

But…

You just said you could dance,

but you didn't say

you were good at it.

Right.

Where is the front hall?

Follow the music.

Thank you.

But I can't dance at all.

The prelude is too long.

Why hasn't the dancer appeared?

Is she going to give us a big surprise?

I have called her many times.

Maybe she really has something special.

Wang Kuan?

It’s you.

You are sanctimonious.

Actually you also came to the brothel.

You know each other?

He is the son of Wei Zhuoran

the Grand Commandant.

One of the four dandies in Kaifeng?

Come on.

You’ve heard of me?

Yes, yes.

Okay. Let’s have a drink.

Wang Kuan.

You put on sanctified airs

at ordinary times.

Do you often come to the brothel?

It’s my first time.

You’re fooling me. I don’t believe it.

How did you get in?

Climbing over the wall.

You…

climbed over the wall?

Because it’s mysterious here.

If something happens to you,

I have to bury you dead for you.

If I were dead, you would not be safe.

A gentle who conduct himself

has the great spirit

and can exorcise

evils.

As you like.

Where is the exotic singing and dancing?

Just music, but no one comes out?

If no one comes out,

I will…

Beauty.

She doesn’t dance to the rhythm.

Why are you so critical?

Follow the plan.

Get ready.

Yes.

What kind of dance is it?

Maybe it’s Zhezhi Dance.

It’s quite special.

Nothing more

but a dance?

We can only drink and eat here.

Is this a brothel or a restaurant?

I’m coming.

I’m coming.

Thank you for coming.

Wang Kuan.

Good for you,

Wang Kuan.

Even someone from a new brothel has known you.

Well,

which one is Childe Yuan?

It’s me.

Childe Yuan.

Please go upstairs with me.

Wait a moment.

What about me?

Please sit back and wait.

You will be taken to another room later.

I came here first.

I think you’re good.

Why don’t we go upstairs together?

No.

You have to wait a moment.

I don't want to wait.

What should I do?

I don’t know.

Alright then.

Let’s go.

You go upstairs, too?

You all will go upstairs.

So will I.

Alright.

It is widely said that you are the best swordsman in the Frontier Army.

Why don't you even dare to hold the sword?

Just a rumor.

I'll give you a chance.

Let’s have a competition.

If you win,

I will let you go.

Officer Liang ranks first among the imperial guards.

I candidly admit defeat.

You have to make it clear later.

I've stopped you,

but you insist on coming up together.

Don’t worry.

Beauty.

I won’t make it hard for you.

I’m finished.

You have to wait a moment.

Come in and have some drink.

We can talk about romantic affairs.

Today's expenses

can be charged to my account.

Do we have such a good relationship?

I will choose girls first.

Let's talk about it first.

If there are no other good girls,

I'll choose the one we met just now.

I don't care about your relationship.

I don't know that girl.

Then why does she know your name?

Don't fool me.

Okay.

Panther.

Come here.

Good.

Do you remember Liang Xun?

General, don’t move.

The Xia troops are coming. Leave them to me.

I remember.

All people were dead

except you.

You insist on saying that

you fought against the enemies on your own.

Is he

your cousin?

He is my blood brother

who is far better than

your mean half-brother.

I will kill you personally.

Why is it so slow?

Childe Yuan.

Two years ago, in the battle of Qichuan village,

your brother put up a desperate struggle

and was well known around the border.

But now he met with an ignominious fate,

and even you were expelled from the Imperial College?

Don't you have a grudge?
