Twisted Fate of Love

Episode 34

My respects to you, Your Highness.

Congratulations.

The court is now under your supervision.

Rise.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Fang Yuan,

are you aware of the Instrument of Surrender

Feng Xi brought up?

Your Highness,

the Mings were proven guilty

of treason

beyond a reasonable doubt.

There’s no such file.

Feng Xi made that up

to pave the way for his rebellion

with Lu Yuantong on the pretext of

clearing the Ming family’s name.

You’ve been on to him for quite a while,

but you haven’t dug up his connection with the Mings,

or a shred of evidence

of him colluding with Lu Yuantong.

Your Highness,

Feng Xi is scheming.

We failed over and over

because he had taken precautions.

Next time,

he’ll be caught unprepared.

You seem to have had a plan.

There must be evidence

of his corruption left over the years.

We can start with that

and follow the lead

to destroy him.

Will that work?

Your Highness,

at this point, he’s the only one

standing in your way.

I’ll do anything

to get rid of him for you.

Thank you

for your effort.

You may leave.

I’ll see what to do.

Yes.

Good day, Your Highness.

Your Highness.

Do you believe what Minister Fang said

about that file?

I trust no one.

I’m keeping him

because I still need

his assassins.

They’re still dangerous.

They can pose a threat to you

before you know it.

We should use more of our own people.

We will,

but not now.

Keep a close watch

on Feng Xi.

I need to know

his every move.

Yes.

Feng Xi, you’ve tricked me over and over.

I won’t tolerate you anymore.

Xi,

I’ve checked everyone

on your list.

Those who are in debt to the Ming family

have mostly retired

and have little power

or influence.

Only some are in office.

But I don’t think

they’ll help the Mings.

Isn’t it too risky

to entrust them with the case?

This one is worth a shot.

Wen Ye?

Isn’t he...

Wen’s Mansion

What brings you here this late,

Minister Feng?

I’m here for cooperation.

I’m powerless

and dull.

I can’t help you in any way.

I need you

to find something in Mengshan Prefecture.

I’ve never been there before,

and what you need

is none of my business.

It’s the Instrument of Surrender

the Emperor of Haoshan handed in to General Ming.

Do you still think that’s none of your business?

Does that file

really exist?

Do you seriously believe

the Mings would commit treason?

When you first became an official,

you couldn’t fit in with others.

Hadn’t it been for General Ming,

you would’ve been dismissed long ago.

How did you know that?

Other than you,

I know of all those people

the Ming family helped.

Riddles

Do you like these?

Of course!

Here.

One, two, three.

I didn’t ask for your help.

You’re too short.

I’m only ten.

You can’t even read at this age.

This is way too simple and boring.

“What am I that have long ears and eat carrots?”

You little troublemaker!

What are you playing?

Nothing!

You can’t solve such an easy riddle?

I’ll do it myself.

Feng Xi,

have you recalled anything?

Riddles are difficult for kids at her age.

She can do them

once she gets older.

Wen Xin,

isn’t the answer to that riddle

your favorite?

Bunny!

Thank you very much, sir.

Excuse me.

How much is this bunny?

I’m sorry,

young lady.

This gentleman here

has already paid for it.

Here you are.

I want it, too.

Sorry, that’s the last one.

Excuse me, sir.

My daughter really likes that bunny.

Can you sell it to me?

Who’s your daughter?

Sorry,

I bought it for my daughter.

First come, first served.

Name a price.

Ridiculous.

Do I look poor?

You...

Do you know...

Wen Xin is watching you.

Calm down.

Sweetie,

it’s alright.

Take this tiger instead.

It’ll bring you a bunny.

You fool!

It’ll only

swallow the bunny alive.

You don’t believe me?

Wait for it.

Wen’s Mansion

Coming.

Wen’s Mansion

Is this Mr. Wen, Wen Ye’s residence?

And you are...

A nobody.

Please give this to Mr. Wen’s daughter.

I’m so sorry

that I failed to recognize her earlier.

Please forgive me.

Miss Wen.

It’s that bunny!

Yes.

A tiger brought it back.

That toad is finally right for once.

Mr. Wen,

what is it about?

I’ve been looking for evidence

of Minister Feng taking bribes

and finally found something.

Where is it?

Testimonies of those offering the bribes

and the detailed accounts

are all in it.

Mr. Wen is the guilty one

who makes such an allegation

to avoid being investigated himself.

What do you mean?

Your Highness,

I also have the evidence

to prove Wen Ye’s bribery.

He leaked confidential information

to a merchant

in exchange

for personal gains.

Mr. Wen is known to be honest and upright.

I won’t tolerate any slander

or setup.

I know what I’m doing.

I wouldn’t make such an accusation

without solid evidence.

Send in the witness Zhao Shiyong.

My respects to you, Your Highness.

Rise.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Zhao Shiyong,

tell His Highness

what you offered Mr. Wen.

A few days ago,

I gave Mr. Wen

a valuable ruby

for information about disaster relief

to sell my grains at a high price.

That’s absurd!

I’ve never seen him

or taken anything from him.

His statement alone

is thin.

I have more evidence.

Bring in Mr. Wen’s servant.

My respects to you, Your Highness.

Rise.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Do you recognize this?

Yes.

Did he bring it to Mr. Wen’s mansion?

Yes.

Mr. Wen, what else do you have to say?

This...

This is a setup!

Li Kai,

what happened?

He...

He said that toy

was a gift for Miss Wen.

It...

Of course bribes couldn’t be offered

aboveboard.

Now, we have the witness and the evidence.

It’s your judgment to make, Your Highness.

Even if Wen Ye is guilty,

it doesn’t make you innocent.

If you can prove I’m guilty,

I’ll take any punishment.

How is that possible?

It was you.

You switched the evidence!

As you said,

a statement alone is too thin.

Everything is clear now,

isn’t it?

Mengshan Prefecture.

Feng Xi,

can you stop telling me lies?

What lies?

Do you mean

Crown Prince sentenced Wen Ye to exile?

Although Crown Prince gave him that sentence,

it was you who plotted the whole thing.

You had decided to use Wen Xin

to set her father up

before she received that bunny.

No one will die.

Don’t be nervous.

How could I not be?

Don’t you know who Wen Ye is?

I know he’s clean-handed,

but everyone must pay a price

for what he or she has done.

Wen Ye is no exception,

and he’s paying his share as we speak.

Must he pay with his life

for doing his job to investigate you?

He’s sentenced to exile, not death.

He won’t die.

Anything could happen outside the city.

He could be in danger.

How do you know that?

Do you think I’d kill him on the way?

I didn’t mean that.

I can assure you

that Wen Ye’s safety is guaranteed.

Don’t worry.

All I know is he’ll be in trouble.

So

you still don’t trust me.

Everything I’ve done

is for a reason,

whether you like it or not.

But I won’t harm you.

I know

you have your plans.

The world is like a chessboard to you.

But Minister Feng,

I and those around me

aren’t your pawns.

Father was killed in Mengshan Prefecture last time

by bandits

on his way there.

He refused to be corrupted

and ended up like this.

So all that you’ve done

is to clear the Ming family’s name.

What’s your relationship with them?

You are...

My real name is

Pang Xi.

Keep that to yourself.

Minister Fang and Crown Prince

have eyes and ears around my place.

I can’t leave to get that Instrument of Surrender.

Besides,

if I hand it in,

people will question its authenticity.

So you want me

to present it to His Highness

to gain his trust

and eventually, His Majesty’s.

That’s the only way.

But

your sudden departure

will raise suspicions.

The safest way

is to be exiled.

But the price is...

I’ll do it at all costs.

Mengshan Prefecture This is your destination,

Mengshan Prefecture.

Xi.

Minister.

Are you...?

Is that letter...?

I’m going to send it to Lu Yuantong.

Is there anything new about him?

I’m inviting him to my villa east to the city.

And he’s welcome to come with his force.

Xi, you’re contacting him again!

That’s risky.

This is the last time.

Once the Instrument of Surrender

is secured,

I’ll settle scores with him.

But him staying at your villa

is suspicious, isn’t it?

That’s exactly where I want him to be.

Once he sets foot in there,

there’s no way out.

Xi,

is that part of your new plan?

I’ve made arrangements in the villa.

If Lu Yuantong still denies

to hand in that file to the court,

he will never get out alive.

His last two visits to the capital

have taken a toll on him.

It won’t be easy

to lure him in again.

That’s what’s troubling me.

He might come

if I went to Liyun to invite him.

But Crown Prince has been watching me.

I can’t leave the city.

Xi, I’ll go.

Even if you managed to get out

and arrived in Liyun,

how would you convince Lu Yuantong?

You’re hotheaded.

You’d probably stir up more trouble.

I haven’t tried it.

How do you know I’d fail?

I’ll go.

You can’t. The risk is too high.

I have an idea

to make him come.

I’m listening.

Lu Yuantong is lying low

to train his troops,

but without that file,

he can’t take any action.

He needs a proper excuse to revolt

and that’s to clear General Ming’s name.

If I use that file as the bait,

I’m sure

he’ll rise to it.

What are you talking about?

We don’t even have it yet.

Even if we do, we won’t give it to him.

Of course he can’t have it.

All I need is to memorize the content

to mislead him

into thinking we have it.

Have you seen it?

Are you aware of the content?

I’m sure

Minister Feng remembers every word of it.

Your idea isn’t too bad.

But even if you memorize everything,

how can you make Lu Yuantong trust you?

No one knows

what will happen to you.

Relax.

He’s looking to join hands with you.

He won’t do anything to me.

Xi, don’t let her go.

I’ll write it down for you.

Xi!

Instrument of Surrender

Moon Garden

Daole.

Yurou.

I haven’t seen His Excellency for a while.

How has he been?

He... he’s occupied lately.

Has...

Has he been eating

and sleeping well?

Daole, you should tell him

to take good care of himself.

I will.

I know it’s not my place to say that.

Dongyue must be there looking after him.

Yes.

Yurou.

You...

No.

I’m worried about him.

Could you take me to see him, please?

Don’t, Yurou.

He’s extremely busy.

With what?

Keeping Dongyue company?

He’s going to meet with Lu Yuantong in his villa.

That’s important.

He doesn’t want to be distracted.

I won’t distract him.

I just want to see him.

Please!

Yurou,

love can’t be forced.

You should let go.

Your Excellency,

three generals in Huainan

have agreed to join us.

The other two who refused

have been taken care of.

General Zhou and General Lin in Hexi

will also follow our lead to revolt.

They’re all waiting for your order.

Well done.

All that’s left is the Instrument of Surrender.

Your Excellency.

What’s wrong?

A woman is outside requesting a meeting.

She introduced herself

as Minister Feng’s cousin.

What is Feng Xi’s cousin

doing here?

Let her in.

Yes.

Send her in.

I, Feng Ziyuan, pay respects to Your Excellency.

Your Excellency,

before searching this place,

do you have

an imperial decree

or a search warrant by Court of Judicial Review?

Feng Xi killed my son.

I have every reason

to search the killer’s home.

Before the truth is out,

this is still Minister Feng’s mansion.

Trespassing

is against the law.

You fought with your life to stop me

from breaking into Feng Xi’s mansion

to seize him that day,

didn’t you?

You have an excellent memory.

It was me.

First, you fought against me,

and here you are alone in my camp.

Are you not afraid of me at all?

Speak.

What does Feng Xi want?

You’re invited

to his villa east to the capital

for your grand mission.

Grand mission?

Does he think I’ll fall for that again?

Please hear me out.

You were trapped in the capital

during your last two visits for a reason.

That was never Minister Feng’s intention.

He helped you out

both times.

His loyalty to you

is obvious to all.

Feng Xi taught you that, didn’t he?

What is he up to?

Be honest,

or you’ll never leave!

He’s pulled tons of strings

for your trip

and arranged for you to stay at his villa.

On top of that,

he’s obtained

the last piece to revolt

that’ll prove the Ming family innocent,

the Instrument of Surrender.

The Instrument of Surrender?

Can I see it?

Minister Feng certainly wouldn’t

let me out with such an important file.

Besides,

Crown Prince is on to him.

Were that file intercepted on the way,

that’d ruin the entire plan.

How can you prove you have it?

Few have seen

that paper

and you happen to be one of them.

If I can

repeat the content,

will that be enough for you to trust me?

Sure.

Speak out every word.

No more, no less.

Or

I’d think you’re a liar.

And you know

the consequence.

“Haoshan and Yin have been at war for months”.

Wrong!

Not “months”.

No way.

Minister Feng can’t be wrong.

Lu Yuantong must be bluffing.

He’s testing me.

I wasn’t wrong.

Those are the exact words.

“Haoshan and Yin have been at war for months,

causing civilians at the border to suffer.

Complaints are heard everywhere”.

Wrong!

It’s not “months”.

It’s “one year and three months”.

There’re no words as “complaints are heard everywhere”.

My words are correct.

“Complaints are heard everywhere.

General Ming Qian sent the envoy to summon us to surrender

for the sake of the people”.

Wrong again!

He didn’t send the envoy,

but forced them to surrender

by spreading his troops outside their gate.

And it wasn’t for the sake of the people.

“After careful consideration,

knowing that the Ming Army is invincible...”

Wrong again!

Not “the Ming Army”.

It’s “the Yin Army”!

“To spare both sides from suffering,

this Instrument of Surrender is drafted

for a truce

to restore diplomatic relations”.

Interesting.

I’m impressed.

You didn’t make a single slip

under such pressure.

Few could achieve

what you’ve done.

Your Excellency,

do you believe me now?

Inform Feng Xi

that I’ll be there in ten days.

Make sure everything is ready.

Yes.

Wen’s Mansion

Virtuous and Inclusive

Wen Xin.

Wen Xin, open up.

Dongyue is here to pick you up.

No!

Be good. Don’t be a baby now!

I have to leave.

Why can’t you take me?

It’s for your good.

I’m exiled,

not to go on a trip.

It’s too dangerous for you.

No, you aren’t worried about me.

You can’t wait to get rid of me.

Wen Xin.

Don’t you love

spending time with Dongyue?

Isn’t it nice

to stay with her?

Dongyue, it’s not about you.

I’m only having a problem with him.

Wen Xin...

Mr. Wen.

I know her well.

Let me talk to her.

Appreciated.

When I was upset at your age,

I’d also sit here and empty my mind.

Just like you,

I bickered with my father a lot.

I couldn’t

speak out my mind properly.

What’s there to speak to him?

Sometimes,

it’s just hard

to pour your heart out to others.

Then

I came up with a solution.

I’d write everything on a piece of paper,

fold it into a boat

and float it on the river.

It’d send the message for me.

Would he receive it?

Regardless of the result,

it’s better than doing nothing and regretting it later.

Wen Xin kept everything to herself

because she didn’t know how to say it.

It’s my fault.

I failed as her father.

If you want to make it up to her,

go downstream of the river

she usually goes to.

“Father,

I know you aren’t abandoning me.

But I hate to be separated from you”.

“I know Mother’s death isn’t your fault.

I’ve never blamed you for it.

I promise I’ll be a good girl.

Could you come back quickly?”

Father!

Wen Xin.

Father!

Wen Xin!

Wen Xin.

I didn’t realize until now that you’re so sweet.

I’m sorry.

I didn’t mean to ignore you.

I blame myself for being useless.

I was weak.

Your mother suffered so much because of me.

“Mother’s death isn’t your fault”. So I devoted myself

to my career

to prove to my family

that I am

the head

of this household.

But all that is nothing but an excuse.

I’m sorry.

I let you

and your mother down.

I’m so sorry.

Don’t cry, Father.

You might not

understand what I said.

Wen Xin.

Father,

I do.

Ziyuan, you’re back!

Lu Yuantong has agreed

to come in ten days.

Good job.

I know

he must’ve given you a hard time.

I can’t do that again.

I could hardly breathe

in front of him.

No matter what,

you fulfilled your mission

on your own.

Xi and I

couldn’t do better than you.

Don’t degrade me

to your level.

I’m telling the truth.

Why didn’t you go?

Alright.

You must be tired. Go back and rest.

Yes. I’ll walk you to your room.

I’m fine. I’m not tired.

That’s impossible!

After such a long journey,

you must be exhausted.

Let’s go get you something to eat.

I’m not done yet!

You should get some rest.

-I’m not done yet! -Are you thirsty?

I can get you some water.

No wonder they say

hoes before bros.

Thanks to you,

Wen Xin and I have made up.

That’s the least I could do.

It’s going to be a long journey.

Please be extra careful.

I will.

You’ll pass by Shangting Post

on the way to Mengshan Prefecture.

That place is home to bandits.

Watch out

and stay away from them.

Thank you.

Please take care of Wen Xin

for me.

I will.

And I’ll keep her away

from Minister Feng.

I don’t want to

drive a wedge between you two.

I’m exiled

because of my own negligence.

It’s no one else’s fault.

Even if he’s innocent,

he shouldn’t have come at you.

A book can’t be judged by its cover,

let alone a person.

He might not be what he seems to be.

You two

have never seen eye to eye.

How come you’re suddenly...?

It’s time

for me to set out.

Take care.

Father...
