That great speech when he talked about baseball, he said in that movie that

baseball has always been there during good times and hard times

and just as people turn to baseball, the movies have always been there for us.

They're the place to go to laugh, to cry, to question, to text.

So tonight enjoy yourself because nothing can take the sting out of the world's

economic problems like watching millionaires present each other

with golden statues.

every Oscar show is special.

No more than tonight as each of you here may be comparing where you are sitting

relative to celebrity seat-filler Carl Swaybeau.

Carl, Carl has been seat filling at the Oscars for

59 years now starting back, his first night in a cheap rental

tux was when "the greatest show on earth" won best picture at the pantages.

Carl is currently filling the seat of the beautiful Jennifer Lopez,

who is backstage right now, preping for her time as a presenter,

she'll be back in her seat soon and Carl, well, he'll be moving

around the house.

It's a big night for you, Carl.

Congratulations.

He's not really a seat filler.

He's just a guy but nonetheless.

Now, let's give away a couple of Academy awards.

The filmmaker makes the film but these first two categories make

the films look the way they do.

First up, here are the nominees for achievement in cinematography.

"The Artist" -- Guillaume Schiffman "The Girl With The Dragon

tattoo" -- Jeff Cronenweth "Hugo" -- Robert Richardson "the Tree Of Life" --

Emmanuel Lubezki "war horse" -- Janusz Kaminski.

And the Oscar goes to --

"Hugo," Robert Richardson.

This is the third Academy award and seventh nomination for

Robert Richardson.

He took home his first two

Oscars for "jfk" and "the aviator."

I can't believe somebody put cinematography up first.

That can only go up from this point.

But one thing remains the same, our love affair with the cinema

started with a simple thing.

You know, that lovely lady was rob Reiner's mom that gave that line.

That was a long time ago.

That's when movies were actually made on film.

Please welcome a recurring dream of mine, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez.

Edith head, the brilliant costume designer, once said, "a

dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman."

"And loose enough to prove you're a lady."

She won eight Oscars, the most of any costume designer in history.

Let's find out now who's on the road to giving Ms. Edith a

run for her money.

Here are the nominees for achievement in costume design.

"Anonymous" -- costume design by Lisy Christl.

When I met Lisy Christl she said I don't want to make costumes,

I want to create reality.

"The Artist" -- costume design by Mark Bridges.

I want the * fitting that the characters shrink a little bit.

"Hugo" -- costume design by Sandy Powell.

You start to understand more not just about the way the

people dressed but thought and felt.

Sandy Powell is a phenomenal costume designer.

"Jane eyre" -- costume design by Michael O'Connor.

Was able to bring a sense of unified aesthetic.

What he made at the end was quite special.

"W.E." -- Costume design by Arianne Phillips.

When you work with Arianne, you must bring the same amount

of devotion that she does.

And the Oscar goes to --

mark Bridges, "The Artist."

Mark Bridges helped liven the scene even though the film was

then converted to black and white.

This is his first Academy award.

Wow, this is thrilling.

I want to thank Michel Hazanavicius for making a beautiful film and having me

along for the ride, Thomas Langmann for believing in the

film and I'm getting the resources together to make it

and Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein company for getting it out to the world.

I want to thank my wonderful crew and, you know, I was just a

kid from niagara falls who dreamed, ate and slept movies so

I want to thank the Academy for this honor and for making a

lifelong dream come true.

This year's nominees for makeup run the gamut.

From transforming a woman, so she could live like a man in

19th century Ireland, to the fantasy world of wizards.

To replicating one of the most iconic leaders of the 20th century.

Here are the nominees for achievement in makeup.

"Albert Nobbs" -- martial Corneville, Lynn johnston and Matthew W. Mungle.

I never would have done this movie without martial

Corneville, I would not because it's just that tricky to do a

short wick like that and have the life he put in it.

Very difficult.

"Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2" -- Nick Dudman,

Amanda knight and Lisa Tomblin.

It started in the morning.

All the magic started in the morning in the makeup room.

Ordinary people arrived and extraordinary people left that room.

What's amazing for me as an actor is when you look in the

mirror and you see nothing of you looking back.

It's an amazing experience.

"The Iron Lady" -- Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland.

I could not convince myself I was her and I couldn't have

convinced the other actors that I was her without their

unbelievably stellar, exceptional work.

And the Oscar for makeup goes to --

well, you take a chance.

"The Iron Lady," MK Coulier and J. Roy Helland.

His biggest challenge was finding the right balance to

create Margaret Thatcher without losing Meryl Streep.

His first Academy award for Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland.

Thank you, Academy and thank you to my colleague on "the iron"

"lady," Mark, without whose brilliant prosthetics I wouldn't

be standing here this evening.

Thanks, Meryl, for keeping me employed for the last 37 years.

Your brilliance makes my work look good no matter what.

I'm a child of the Saturday and Sunday double-double features so

getting to work in the movies is a dream come true.

Just like to say what an amazing experience, thanks to

Meryl, you were incredible and just a quick thank you to Barry

garrow and my kids and my wife Amanda and my dad, thank you, guys.

It is kind of mysterious, isn't it? Why we want to go and

sit and stare at this illusion up on the screen that feels real.

When I was 6 1/2 years old, I saw the original "king Kong" as

my first movie.

I don't know how it happened, but I was 5, and I saw "diamonds are forever."

My family, we went to the movies every Sunday at night.

I remember seeing ale film called "the gargantuas."

It was late and past my bedtime so I knew it was a big deal.

At the end the good gargantua had to sacrifice himself to defeat the bad one and

rid the world of evil.

"The miracle worker, "the wizard of oz," "the elephant"

man, some of the first movies that I remember watching, there were these outsiders that I connected to.

It just sent my imagination running wild, you know, trying

to imitate those characters or suddenly I'm in that world in my

backyard afterwards.

You're sitting there and the screen is enormous and the sound

is fantastic, and there's no one in front of you.

You know, and you're like there.

It's like all yours.

I could dream there.

I could become anything I want.

I could be part of the film.

I could dream about my own future.

And I remember talking about Sean connery and his performance

and his chest hair and just thinking, can I please do that?

marks the first baseball movie to score a best picture

nomination since "field of"

"dreams" in 1989.

No baseball film has ever won best picture, but will that change tonight?

1.2 billion people in China, they have asked me to briefly

speak about this category in mandarin Chinese.

Luckily, I speak it fluently.

One quick note, since my mother spoke German to us while we were

growing up, my Chinese has a very slight German accent.

"A separation" is the first movie from Iran to win the Academy award

They are happy not just because of an important award or a film

or a filmmaker, but because at the time and talk of war,

intimidation and aggression is

That moment for octavia is what the Oscars is all about.

Pretty amazing and I loved that movie a lot.

When I saw it when it came out "The Help" I hugged the first

black woman I saw which from Beverly hills is about a 45-minute drive.

Before movies studios wondered what the public will think about

it and have test screenings with a group of regular people which

is called a focus group.

You've all been through it.

Not pleasant at times and ask them questions about how they

feel and often a handful of folks will change the way a film

is finished so this is not a new thing.

Starting back in 1939, mgm not only had focus groups but Louis

B. Mayor had them filmed so he could watch them so the Academy

bought a pair of Ruby slippers which Tom Sherak is wearing

tonight, one of the rare footage from a focus group from "the wizard of oz."

Watch.

Oh, auntie em, there's no place like home.

We're awfully glad you came to see us.

Without any further ado, how did you like the movie, everybody?

I was somewhat perplexed.

We meet these affable farmhands at the beginning of the movie,

and yet they disappear.

And I think that they should have incorporated those

characters into the movie so that we care about them at the end.

I love the flying monkeys, you know, I play sax with the

cab Calloway band and always have an argument as to whether monkeys can fly.

This proves it.

If you can teach a monkey to fly, you can teach a monkey to

talk and what is he going to say when he talks.

Why don't they think about the kids.

The munchkins.

No, little kid, I didn't get it.

Those are actually not children.

- Those are adults but they're - I found them irritating.

And you hire all these children and little people when

there are plenty of capable full-size men in the bread lines still.

Huh.

Very interesting.

Any other opinions?

I didn't like it till they got to the flying monkeys.

Lots of ugly faces in the movie.

Faces look like they were caught in an elevator smooshed long,

hatchet face, long chins, I've never seen so many unattractive people.

I would start the movie in color, then go to black white and flip it.

I didn't particularly care for the rainbow song.

Cut the rainbow song, okay.

I find it very catchy -- ? if dirty little monkeys fly

away why, oh, why, can't I ?

I feel that way sometimes too.

Is there a particular character you would never rather not see.

That's easy, Dorothy.

And the good witch is a cruel jokester.

She told have told Dorothy hours ago that she could clicked her

heels and we would have been home sooner.

Was one green or I'm nuts.

The great film director Ridley Scott said that the

collaboration between a film editor and a director is like a marriage.

And just like in marriage, they spend all their time in a

dark, windowless room ordering in food and looking at pictures of other people.

What?

Here are the nominees for achievement in film editing.

"The Artist" -- Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius.

On film and I became crazy, really crazy.

"The Descendants" Evin tent.

Victories every day and you're like, hey, that looks

great but then when you do it in a whole movie, that's really satisfying.

"The girl with the Dragon tattoo" irk Baxter and Angus wall.

The pillowcases and pajamas and the main thing I remember

doing with my dad on weekends was take you to the cinema.

As an editor, I always feel like I need to, in a way, fall

in love with that character which is not very easy obviously

in a movie like this.

"Hugo" -- Thelma Schoonmaker.

I have no idea how it's made, none, until I met Martin scorsese.

"Moneyball" -- Christopher Tellefsen.

The rhythm of what's going on is driving that completely

beyond, of course, the performances and everything else, but that -- I love it.

And the Oscar goes to --

"The Girl With The Dragon tattoo," Kirk Baxter and Angus wall.

Angus wall with his diligence and Kirk Baxter had the

vigilance, this is the second for this team who won last year

for "the social network."

We weren't expecting this.

Making a movie dealing with the future of our technology in

cinema in so doing we wind up back at the origins of cinema,

and that we're at a point right now where Melies was then.

"Real steel" -- Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor and Swen Gillberg.

We puppeteered those robots.

"Rise of the planet of the apes" -- Joe Letteri,

Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher white and Daniel Barrett.

There is no whiz, bang effect.

That's made up of 1s and 0s.

That takes a special talent.

"Transformers: Dark of the moon" -- Scott Farrar,

Scott Benza, Matthew Butler and John Frazier.

There is true complexity in these shots.

My thing is to make it dead real and that's the magic of visual effects.

This is the first Academy award

nomination for Joss Williams, Ben Grossmann and Alex henge and

the second for rob legato.

He said the level of quality established on set was the

highest honor for Martin scorsese.

I know it's a huge thrill to be nominated but it's awesome to

win and really underrated.

I really wouldn't be here for not the genius of Martin scorsese.

It is an epic thrill to work and film Wil Marty and this movie

and the incredible collaborators all of which are nominated here

tonight and by the grace of hundreds of artists all over the

world working thousands and thousands of hours, we're here

standing up here and appreciate that and we want to thank the

Academy for recognizing them and thank you to our producers for

giving us the go-ahead to do what we did and Graham and Tim

and Paramount and everyone.

You know, this was the year we said good-bye to Harry Potter.

Harry Potter's movies made $7.7 billion.

It gets into my soul and just makes me happy.

So I guess in that way it's not just thrill and entertainment.

Well, every once in a while you get the truth from a movie.

"Godfather" had all the qualities of real honesty in my opinion.

When you see those moments of digny, someone handle a

situation better than you would, that shows you an example of nobility.

I want to make something I myself would want to watch and I

just happen to want to watch some really sick stuff.

I'm eventually trying to one day tell the truth.

I don't know if I'm ever going to get there but I'm slowly

letting pieces of myself out there and then maybe by the time

I'm 85 I'll look back and say, all right, that about summed it up.

held earlier this month, ten awards were presented to 29 individuals whose

achievements have had a lasting and significant impact on the

process of making motion pictures.

I was honored to have presented those awards.

So let's take a look at some highlights from that evening.

Among the honors bestowed on this distinguished group was

recognition of a new generation of high-speed digital cameras

that have made 2,000 frames per second possible.

A new gyro system that allows cinematographers the ability to

film with greater ease and stability from moving vehicles

such as helicopters, cars or boats.

An Oscar for the design and development of the arrilaser

film recorder and an Oscar to Doug trumbull -- a pioneer in

the field of visual effects who created or invented many

techniques that are commonly used in the industry.

Wow!

This is a beautiful thing.

This has been a great year for strong, feminine characters,

some wore high heels an ran countries like "The Iron Lady"

and "j. Edgar" and the band loved that.

There were world leaders, civil rights fighters and sink poopers.

So please welcome the cast of "bridesmaids" Risten Wiig, Maya Rudolph,

wendi McLendon-covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy and rose Byrne.

Six beautiful, some say handsome women, invited by the

Academy not only to present three awards, but also to

shatter the common belief that "size does not matter."

I hate to tell you guys this, but it kinda does.

Yes, but not length.

As my grandma used to say, "it can be short and still make your toes curl."

And I believe in my heart my grandma wasn't referring to

wieners, but short films.

See, I'd rather have a short film with some heft that's nice

to me rather than a long film that just lies there and makes

you do all the work.

But sometimes a film can be too long.

Not for me.

Not for me.

Our little film was inspired by the people of northern Ireland,

protestant and catholic, who after 30 years of war sat down,

Documentaries shine a spotlight on the world around us.

And in the case of the best documentary short subject, that

line shines for only a short period of time.

Much like a moonbeam or a shooting star, or a flicker of a candle.

"The Tsunami and the cherry blossom" Ucy Walker and Kira Carstensen.

"saving face," Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

This is the first Academy award for Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy grew up in Pakistan and Daniel Junge was born in Wyoming.

To be emotionally detached was the hardest thing on the other

side of the camera, they said.

Well, it's more important that the Pakistani on the stage speak than me.

But I just quickly want to simply thank hbo and Lisa for

making this film possible, my wife Erin and our editor, please, speak.

I want to dedicate this to all the heroes on the ground in Pakistan including Dr. mohamed

Jahva working on rehabilitating all these women, Rockiesana, the

main subject of the film whose resilience and bravery in the

face of such adversity is admirable and to all the women

in Pakistan who is working for change, don't give up on your dreams.

This is for you.

And last, but not least, we've come to best animated short film.

In 1988, this award was presented to the great John Lasseter, who has since

gone on to change the world of animation when he helped create Pixar.

Yes.

So technically, every nominee in this category has been given the

opportunity to live up to those standards.

But no pressure, of course.

Here are the nominees for best animated short film.

"Dimanche/sunday" Patrick Doyon.

"The fantastic flying books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" -- William Joyce and

Brandon oldenburg.

When asked what the biggest challenge was in making the

film, William Joyce says, not giving up.

They did 375 setups in 5 days.

It nearly killed them all and still it was the most fun they've ever had.

This is their first Academy award and nomination for the team.

Oh, my God.

Look, we're just these two like swamp rats from Louisiana and

this is incredibly grand.

We love the movies.

We love the movies more than anything.

It's been a part of our lives since we were both kids.

It's been a part of our DNA ever since we were children, and

it's made us story tellers.

And there's guy, thousands of men and women through the whole

generations, through the beginning of cinema that have

inspired us and movies that moved us more than we ever knew

we could be moved, and it's everything we try to do every

day is to try to honor those people and those films, and

we're just down there in Louisiana and we're going to

keep on trying and going and thank you to the Academy.

Every single person is so happy and so grateful to be

there and I think it really stemmed from him.

It's rare to see films that are so "a," culturally depicted in

Martin scorsese -- "Hugo."

In that gesture I think the Academy also would be rightly

placed in saying to Marty, you have given us so much.

You take us so close to the heart of cinema and the grandness of it is art.

Woody Allen -- "midnight in Paris."

I think the most engaged in the present Woody is not

engaging in the things that come or go or the things that may be

have bright lights and dazzle us in the moment but about the

stuff that really matters to us in the present and that's connecting

with us and telling stories that will hit us.

Terrence Malick -- "The Tree Of Life."

I think Terrence Malick's films are the perfect representation he is as a man.

How he does it is a complete mystery.

When he does it, I don't have a clue.

I suspect his wife Becky knows but she's not saying.

And the Oscar goes to Ichel Hazanavicius.

[ Applause ]

This is the third Academy award nomination tonight for

Michel Hazanavicius and his first Oscar.

His wit, his wisdom and his reassuring presence is what made

You understand something that you didn't understand before about life.

And every -- everything is stacked up against that film ever getting made.

You're hurtling towards this ideal that could be shattered by

anybody being selfish, by anybody being fearful.

You're fighting with every ounce you have to make sure that

you will love it forever, and when it doesn't turn out that

way, it's painful and that's why people are weird who make movies.

It's because they care more about their film than themselves.

Well, that's the thing.

You go through all that 'misery and then people don't know what

you go through and they're not expected to.

With each one it is that learning curve.

There is that experience, okay, you know, there's the movie we

think we're making, and then there's the movie, you know.

They basically are saying I'm strapping myself to a rocket.

It's either going to blow up, or I'm going to go up and do 900

loop-de-loops and your eyes will burn out from splendor and awe.

A sign that it's great is when it's over to the soles of

my feet I'm feeling how, how did they do that?

How did they get that done?

I've never had any of those feelings.

We're not so different, you and I.

We both spend our lives looking for the weaknesses in one another's systems.

Don't you think it's time to recognize there is as little

Brad -- we were not watching a baseball story.

Because of your work as Billy Beane, we were watching a

story about an underdog willing to challenge the status quo and

question things that no one had ever questioned before.

Whether one is a baseball fan or not, your charisma and

"The Artist" is a rarity, not only is it black and white and

French director's take on old Hollywood but the only movie

among the nine best picture nominees from entirely Los

Angeles having ten Academy award nominations this year, winning five Oscars.

I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to you,

members of the Academy, to you, R.V., not only because we

received tonight the award that any filmmaker would dream to

receive but because tonight you've given me the opportunity

to pay tribute to a member of this Academy that I miss so

much, the Oscar winner Claude Berry and he directed movies

like "the two of us" and produced and worked with

directors such as Francis Ford coppola, Pedro Almodovar, Milos foreman, Roman

polanski, and I always thought and remember will I ever one day

be able to work with such director, a director that could

stand in front of these examples and tonight I know I do because

I am the producer of Michel Hazanavicius and I am glad to be his producer.

I'd like to say very, very important things.

I want to say hi to my kids and it's 6:00 in the morning in

Paris, so you should go to bed in 30 seconds.

their nominations for the best film.

In most other categories, the nominations are decided by a

vote of the members working in that specific category.

Then the entire membership choose from those nominations

the recipients of the Academy awards.

In the documentary, short film and foreign language film

categories, only those members who view the nominees theatrically may vote.

And finally, the results of all secret voting are known only to

the independent accounting firm of pricewaterhousecoopers until

the sealed envelopes are opened on the air.
