I'm a social worker with the state.

I'm here in regards to the ah,

traffic incident caused
by your umbrella delusion.

No one was hurt and according to you

this whole situation was involuntary.

Whether it was or wasn't isn't
for me to say at this time,

however the story of
your umbrella did come up

in conversation and had to be considered.

So, Mr. Evans, please walk me
through what happened today?

Mr. Evans, do you remember
what triggered your episode?

- [Helen] Jared, I don't
know how to tell you this.

Your father's cancer's back.

- So, in your mind or in your imagination.

You opened an umbrella even
though no one else could see it?

- [Helen] Your father doesn't want

to go through treatment again.

- [Ruth] So, you were standing
in the middle of the street

when your Aunt told you about

your father's deteriorating health?

- [Helen] Jared, your father is dying.

- At which the point
the police were notified

and my office became involved.

Well, in light of these events, ah,

the court has ordered 60 hours

of state run social inclusion program.

Basically, you'll be required

to be involved with any activities

or group counseling they deem necessary.

As well as have private
sessions with a group counselor.

- Mm, okay, what about work?

I just can't take days off

and show up whenever I feel like it.

- That's been taken into consideration,

but seeing as how incarceration

is the other option if
this were to happen again,

I'd say you got off easy.

- What if this doesn't work out?

What if, what if I say no?

- I advise against that decision.

of your earliest memories?

when I was younger,

I got in like, I was in a bicycle,

Well usually, these painful experiences,

they can, ah, be some of
our most vivid memories.

- Ah, they aren't for me, I,

I usually don't really remember much

about painful experiences.

So you'd say that your life, well,

for the most part, it's
been, ah, pain free?

- I think so, I mean I don't focus on it,

if that's what you mean?

That's a good thing, right?

Focus on the positive not the negative?

- Well, sometimes.

Not always, Jared.

I mean these, ah, painful experiences,

they can be our biggest growth mechanisms.

Well, they teach us to,
ah, develop character.

- Well, I guess I don't
have much character then.

- So, Jared,

when you checked out in
the middle of the street,

what were you doing?

- Um,

I don't really remember.

- Would you say this happens often?

- Just depends.

- [Henry] And would you
say more than once a week?

- Sure.

- Jared, what kind of
situations would you say

you, you're in when you're most
prone to using the umbrella?

- I don't, I don't know.

- [Henry] You feel like using it now?

Well, I don't need to know everything

about you all in one day.

I guess we can talk
about this a bit later.

- You really think therapy can help me?

- [Henry] I'm gonna do
everything that I can.

a false security from
this coping mechanism.

Now it could very well be
the cause of this habitual,

well, tendency that you have.

from

all the noise and the chaos and all this?

Pain can't touch you.

Emotions can't control you.

You're untouchable.

For a moment in time,
you're in complete control

- I did it to myself.

I guess it just kinda stuck after that.

But there's a consequence
to such a question.

- Like, why the umbrella?

- I think it all started when I was a kid.

Me and my brother used
to, well my dad used

to take me and my little
brother up to this lake

up the mountains a ways and,

(sighs) I mean, one day we
decided we could swim across it,

but halfway through we got
really tired and headed back,

only, (sighs)I mean, he
never made it back, so.

I've had the umbrella ever since.
