Berlinger: In the small town
of Chillicothe, Ohio,

six women
have gone missing --

young mothers caught
in a vicious cycle of addiction

and prostitution.

Four of them have
turned up dead.

Woman: I found a woman's body
in the creek.

Berlinger: I'm Joe Berlinger.

I'm a documentary filmmaker
and an activist.

I'm working with forensic
analyst Angela Clemente

and former FBI agent
Steve Bongardt...

We'd really like
to talk to you...

...to find out what happened
to these women.

Woman:
We got to get justice.

All of us in here
have to get justice.

Berlinger: As we delved deeper
into these cases,

our investigation expanded

to nine victims
across three cities.

But just as we're making
significant progress in

our year-and-a-half-long
investigation,

we hit a snag.

So, what is this,
exactly?

What it says
right there, ma'am.

"Grand jury witness subpoena."

Berlinger: The Ross County
prosecuting attorney

wants us to hand
over recordings and transcripts

of our interviews

and reveal our
confidential sources.

We don't want the sources
to be named

because that could
potentially endanger them.

But despite this major setback,

we are determined to
continue our investigation.

Ruth: There's somebody out there
that knows what went on,

but they just won't tell
because they're scared.

Magill: Shall we pray?
"Our Father..."

Heather: He put the gun
to my chest, and he said,

"Live or die."

Landrum: Everybody who knows
information

that tries to come out and talk
about it, they end up dead.

Coleman: He gave her
a hot shot of heroin.

Kellough: And I said,
"I know who your son is,

and I know what he did, too."

Sam: If she's out there,
please just let her go,

[Echoing]
and let her come home.

Berlinger: While our attorneys
fight the subpoena

and our right to protect
our confidential sources,

we hear some surprising news.

Have you had a chance
to review this plea agreement?

Yeah.

It's pretty extraordinary
that he took a plea.

News breaks that
Ernest "Dollar Bill" Moore,

a person of interest
in our investigation,

has pled guilty to federal
drug trafficking charges

for selling narcotics
across state lines

while in Gallipolis.

So why do you think Dollar Bill
took this plea agreement?

It's saying that he's going
to cooperate.

The sentencing is, what,
May 30th?

He wants to get that reduced.

It says that he's the ring
leader in this drug bust.

So, what's interesting with that
is if he's the ringleader,

then who's he
cooperating against?

Not his co-defendants.
He's the ringleader.

Yeah.

That means it's
a much bigger case.

So, we're hoping
the big investigation,

right is, is a RICO --

racketeer-influenced,

corrupt organization charge,
which allows you

to take a look
at all these other offenses

as part of
the bigger enterprise.

So murders, extortion,
sale of illegal substances,

trying to bribe officials,

all of those smaller charges

can be brought into
a bigger charge

against the whole pool
of people.

It also could explain
why they're freaked out

and subpoenaed us
for any information

relating to Dollar Bill.

Like we've stepped
into a much bigger...

Hornet's nest.
...case that's unfolding

at the federal level.
Right, yeah.

I think we have to at least
make some kind of a good effort

to let the Feds know
that these women,

their missing
and deaths, murders,

could have something
to do with Dollar Bill.

Berlinger: A month after
receiving the subpoena,

we get good news.

Our legal team has persuaded

Ross County Prosecutor
Matt Schmidt

to rescind the subpoena.

We provide him with some
pertinent information

about our investigation,

without revealing
our confidential sources.

Dollar Bill's sentence
on the federal drug charges

will be tacked
onto the 10 years

he's already serving
for the 2015

kidnapping and brutal torture
of Arthur Hamlin,

a convicted drug dealer
who was working for him.

Woman: Ernest Moore,
aka "Dollar Bill,"

bound him with duct tape

and forced him
into a duffel bag.

Marks: He was stripped of his
clothing and tortured

over a period of many hours.

Berlinger: Inmate
Wallace "Cheese" Coleman

is one of Dollar Bill's
accomplices

in the torture
of Arthur Hamlin,

and was sentenced
to 14 years in prison.

Berlinger:
Hearing these gruesome details,

we want to learn more about

Dollar Bill's relationship
with Arthur Hamlin.

We return to Ohio to track down
some of Dollar Bill's

former business associates.

Hodge: Artie was, like,
the key to Dollar Bill.

Artie basically helped
Dollar Bill survive

when he was in Chillicothe.

Uh, he ran everything.

He brought all the money.

He delivered all the drugs.

Uh, he brought the girls.

Um, he transported.

Berlinger:
The two worked together

until Dollar Bill felt
that Artie turned on him

and stole drugs and thousands
of dollars in cash.

A woman that we're
calling "Danielle"

witnessed some
of Artie's torture.

She bravely agrees
to speak to us

on the condition of anonymity.

Do you ever remember hearing
that he was gonna kill someone?

Mm-hmm.
Why do you think he didn't?

Berlinger: Angela and Steve
obtain rarely-seen

court documents
and shocking crime scene photos

that outline new information

about Artie's three day ordeal

and who was behind it.

That's amazing that
they released it, right?

Yeah.

Berlinger: These troubling
documents state that

other people who stopped
by the trap house

during that time were encouraged

to take part in the torture.

Clemente: It says, "Mr. Hamlin
advised that visitors

were encouraged to hit, kick,

and urinate on him
if they wanted to."

Wow.

Berlinger: We're even more
surprised to learn that

Dollar Bill
had an elaborate plan

to get the torture
charges dropped.

Clemente: Dollar Bill had gone
to Artie Hamlin,

the one that he tortured,

and picked him up
either at the hospital

or when he was getting out of
the hospital for being tortured.

And made him sign
that affidavit, right?

And made him write an affidavit.

"I, Arthur Hamlin, give this
statement on my own free will.

I'm not being made to do this.

It's on my own.

I'm sober and in state of mine."

"State of mine" --
M-I-N-E.

Berlinger: Dollar Bill allegedly
forced Hamlin

to write this bogus statement
to authorities,

claiming he was tortured
by several unknown persons.

And even more outrageous,
that Dollar Bill himself

would have been tortured, too,
if he had not gotten away.

Clemente: "Once inside,
a couple men

pulled guns and a knife,
and we tried run out the door.

Well, my friend made it out
the door and they caught me.

They beat and tortured me."

Wow.

Joe, I mean,
I think his plan is

he's got this affidavit
with Arthur Hamlin

saying he had nothing
to do with it.

Berlinger: But Dollar Bill's
plan backfires.

When he takes the statement
to police,

they don't believe him

and immediately
place him under arrest.

He later pleads guilty
and gets a 10-year sentence.

Because Arthur Hamlin was
Dollar Bill's right-hand man,

we wonder if he has
some inside information

about Dollar Bill's
possible involvement

in the deaths
and disappearances

we've been investigating.

Steve tries to set up a meeting.

I know what you went through.
I mean, I'm amazed

that you survived
what you survived.

Are you concerned
about your safety now?

I can be at your house
in 15 minutes.

Yep, absolutely.

Bongardt: Wow.

Volatile personality.

This guy is just
all over the place.

But this might be our one chance
to talk to him.

Berlinger: Since his torture,

Artie's been keeping
a low profile

at a friend's trailer
on the outskirts of Chillicothe.

What do we want to know
from Arthur Hamlin?

We're gonna be there in,
it says, 10 minutes.

Clemente: I'm sure he knows
a lot about Dollar Bill

and all the crimes
that took place

because he was
so connected to him.

He's critical.

He's really critical.

You know what,
that is my people.

No, no, no.

He's the director.

Dollar Bill excites you.

Hamlin:
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

[ Crash ]

Berlinger: Artie gets angry

and smashes
a baseball bat on the table,

so we're concerned for
Angela and Steve's safety.

Bongardt: You have been
through the ringer.

[ Smacking fist ]
Whomp-whomp-whomp-whomp-whomp!

I want you to relax.
[ Crash ]

All right, okay.

Berlinger: Because of Artie's
seemingly volatile behavior,

we're just not sure
how he'll react

when we try to get
information from him.

Our camera crew waits outside,
but we record audio,

hoping Artie will be able
to confirm or deny

details of Dollar Bill's
potential involvement

in any of
the victim's cases.

Bongardt: Can you tell us
about Charlotte?

-Clemente: Yeah?
-Hamlin: Yup.

Could you take us
to where she might be?

Berlinger: After seeming to
indicate that the victims

were indeed murdered,

Artie immediately
corrects himself.

Clemente: I'll believe you.
Bongardt: We'll believe you.

Berlinger: Finally,
Steve and Angela

get Artie comfortable
with the cameras

and he allows us in.

But right away, Artie
gets too close to Angela,

making her and us
very uncomfortable.

What?

Despite her uneasiness,
Angela's determined to continue,

hoping he'll
give us a lead.

Okay, okay

Okay?
So, you were close

to Charlotte,
though, right?

Yes.
You said that was your girl.

Yes.

I want to know where
I can go find her.

Where can I go find her?

Well, why don't you turn
the camera off

and I'll tell ya?
Okay, cameras off.

That's a dumb-ass question.

Berlinger: Suddenly, Artie
whispers something

into Angela's ear.

But then he abruptly
ends the interview.

Hey, what did he whisper to you?

"Charlotte's on the railroad
tracks in Bainbridge."

And he's told Winfield
and Campbell

where she was and nobody
will go get her.

Okay, that's -- conflicts
with, you know,

being burned
on Dollar Bill's property.

Right.

And he's also very high,
so we gotta...

He's also high, and this
is what he heard.

He was in jail
during the time, he said.

Berlinger: Artie suddenly gets
in a car with some friends,

and we never hear
from him again.

His alleged tip
that Charlotte Trego

is buried somewhere
in Bainbridge

is pure speculation
at this point

and one of the many rumors
we've heard,

but it does lead us
back to the same town

where Tameka Lynch
was found dead in May of 2014.

Man: Detectives say the body of
a woman discovered

in Paint Creek
on Saturday near Bainbridge

is Tameka Lynch.

Berlinger: The 30-year-old
mother of three

is the second woman
to go missing in Chillicothe,

and the first body
to be found.

Earlier in our investigation,

Cheese told us
a man named Crail Brooks

is responsible
for Tameka's death,

and may also have
killed Charlotte Trego.

Berlinger: A woman who does not
want to be identified

tells us about the brutality
she suffered

at the hands of Crail Brooks.

Sources tell us
that Crail Brooks

is a small-time drug dealer
who worked for Dollar Bill.

He was -- Mm-hmm.

Cheese told us

Tameka died at a house party in
Bainbridge, Ohio,

20 miles from Chillicothe.

So, this party area is, like,
really becoming critical,

I think.

Bongardt: I think it's important

because the girls
that were missing starts there.

There was a history
with Tameka and people

that were at this party.

Berlinger: Shyla Woodruff,

a woman who hung out
in the same circles as Tameka,

seems to know more
about her death

than Tameka's own family.

As I'm going through her
Facebook page,

there was a point
where she had stated

something like "In our prayers."

And it was at a time
when Tameka's body

had just been found,

but they hadn't identified
in public that --

that this is Tameka
that was found.

Bongardt: How did she know
before anyone else?

Charlotte Trego is still
missing at this time,

so it could be Charlotte,
could be someone else,

you don't know.

For her to make that
jump that it is Tameka

and be correct indicates

some kind of inside information.

Berlinger:
Shyla agrees to an interview,

but before it takes place,
we share the information

with the Chillicothe
Police Department.

Shyla has decided
she will speak to us today.

You know,
she's gonna tell us about

her relationship with Tameka.

Um, due to the active state
of the investigation,

I would like for,
obviously --

I'm just not gonna
comment on it.

We'll just leave it at that.

Berlinger: Later,
as we sit and wait

for Shyla to show up
for the interview,

our associate producer
interrupts us

with some important news.

Sorry.
So yeah, I just tried her.

Uh, it was an interesting call,
to say the least.

She said, either "I'm on
my [bleep] way," and hung up,

or "I hope you [bleep] die,"
and hung up.

Wow.

Berlinger: Shyla Woodruff's
sudden no-show has us wondering,

is there a leak in the
Chillicothe Police Department?

Was she warned we were
about to ask how she knew

Tameka was dead
before the public did?

Berlinger: After hearing rumors
that Crail Brooks

may have killed Tameka by
a hot shot

at a party in Bainbridge,

Tameka Lynch's parents,

Angela Robinson and Tommy Lee,

take us back to
the Paint Creek sandbar

where their daughter's
body was found.

Clemente: We're gonna look at
the location here shortly.

Berlinger: We want to determine,
is there a link

between Crail
and Tameka's death?

Berlinger:
It's covered in snow now.

And even though it's been
more than two years,

their emotions are still raw.

And she was right there
on the sandbar.

Clemente:
Notice there's a house here.

There's a house there.

There's an embankment here,

and there's a home here.

This is somebody familiar.

This is someone familiar
with this area.

I think the story
that we've heard is true.

Crail.
Right.

I think that Crail did it.

I think that they started
at his house.

I think
something happened there,

and he killed her there.

And then so Charlotte wouldn't
be able to say anything,

I think that he really
did set her on fire.

He supposedly had bragged
to a couple of people afterwards

and he was talking about,
he finally did it.

He finally cut up a body.

Let me ask you something,

because there's so many other
women missing and murdered.

What about the rest of them?

What do you think
the involvement is?

-A lot of people involved?
-Yes.

Berlinger: Crail Brooks
was questioned about

Tameka Lynch's death

and the disappearance
of Charlotte Trego,

but he was never charged.

However, he was arrested for
drug trafficking in Bainbridge

just 12 days after
Tameka's body was found.

Early in our investigation,
Wallace "Cheese" Coleman

alleged that Crail
did not act alone.

Coleman: I don't know
the guy's last name,

but I know his first name
is Preston.

He's a white guy.
He's from here in Chillicothe.

Berlinger: In a phone interview
from prison, Jason McCrary

also says a man named
Preston is involved.

Clemente: Do you know where
they dumped her?

Berlinger: Angela tracks down
the address

for Crail's alleged accomplice,
Preston Colter.

Clemente: I'd like to try
to find out if --

if he was definitely involved.

Or if he wasn't, I want
to assess his behaviors.

Berlinger: Preston Colter was
released from

an Ohio State prison
in February 2017

where he served
30 months for burglary.

It's possible Preston
took part in Tameka's death

and may be dangerous,

so Angela brings security
along for protection.

Clemente: He's not gonna wanna
talk to me.

Hello.

Hi.
I'm looking for Preston.

Oh, right here.

Could I speak to him?

My name's Angela.

[ Dog barks ]
Hi, Preston.

He don't bite.
He won't bite? Okay.

Yeah.

Berlinger: But Preston is
surprisingly open to

talking about Tameka
and Charlotte's cases,

and admits he knows
both of them.

So Preston, I appreciate
you talking to me.

Um, you had a polygraph done?
Yes, ma'am.

Two polygraph tests.
Two polygraphs?

Two. Yes, ma'am.
And what kind of questions

were they asking
on the polygraph?

Like, for Tameka, they asked,
did I kill her,

and you know,
I of course answered no.

And they asked that
for Charlotte, also.

Since I didn't kill her,
did I know who killed her?

I, you know, answered no
to both of them questions

and, uh, passed those clearly.

You knew Crail?
You know Crail?

I don't know him,
but I know him.

Okay.
You know, I don't know him,

like,
to ever say like I say,

like I would never
put no bad juju

or whatever you want to call it,
dirt, whatever, on his name,

but I just know,
like, of him.

Why is it, do you think,

that you of all people
in Chillicothe,

that they were
associating your name

with Tameka and Charlotte?

I -- I...
I don't know.

Maybe because, you know,

I hung out
with the drug crowd, maybe?

If I had to guess,
that would be it.

"Oh, well he hung out
with the people who done drugs,"

or, "He's been seen with
these people who done drugs,

so maybe he knows
something," you know.

Just a maybe-type question,
you know,

and they just threw it out
there to hopefully

get something from it.

Berlinger:
While Preston seems believable,

and says
he passed two polygraphs,

multiple sources say
he and Crail

did know each other

and were together
the night Tameka died.

and his possible connection
to both

Tameka and Charlotte's cases,
we follow up on a tip

that we received earlier
about a missing cellphone

that belonged to Megan Kellough,

a 26 year-old Chillicothe woman

who allegedly allegedly
died of

an accidental overdose
in December of 2015.

Megan's phone allegedly
contains solid evidence

that might implicate
Crail Brooks.

So, we're going to talk
to Robin Kellough,

the mother of Megan Kellough.

You know, they kind
of just dismissed it

as being just an overdose.

Berlinger: But Robin
doesn't believe

her daughter
accidentally OD'd.

She thinks Megan was murdered,

given a hotshot
for knowing too much.

That phone was found
when Megan was found dead.

Supposedly, there's
a conversation

on there that Megan taped
between her and Crail Brooks

where Crail is talking
about the death of Tameka...

Okay.
...and Charlotte.

And that's really important.

And that's very --
that could be very important.

Berlinger: But Megan's phone

seems to have
mysteriously disappeared

from the police evidence locker.

Early in our investigation

we had asked detective Bud Lytle
about the cellphone.

Clemente: Apparently, there was
a cellphone recording

of Crail Brooks

describing how he murdered
Tameka and Charlotte

that was given
to this police department.

That's news to me.

To my knowledge, um,

that conversation,
or that recording,

I've never heard it

and I don't know
that it truly exists.

Could you tell me everything
you can remember

about that conversation
that was recorded on that phone?

She was asking Crail
if he was around

when it happened
to Charlotte and Tameka.

He said, "Hell yeah,
them bitches robbed me."

So, hell yeah,
I killed them."

He said, "Well, Tameka,
she overdosed."

So they put her out
in the water,

and they had Charlotte do it.
Well, Charlotte had flipped out.

Well, they beat
her up real bad.

So, Crail said they had to go
ahead and finish Charlotte,

and Dollar Bill was there.

He just went around
bragging that he killed

Charlotte and Tameka.
He was sta--

You heard it
from Dollar Bill?

Yeah, I heard it, in person.

He said, "Ain't no evidence,
ain't nobody going down for it,

so it don't matter."

Did he say -- Did he give
any details when he,

Dollar Bill,
was talking to you?

Details, yeah.
No, he just claimed

that he did it.
The only person

that gave the detail
was over the phone,

and that was Crail.

Can you walk me a little bit
through the process

of how you've tried to get,
you know, the phone back?

I was going every day.
How often often, how long?

I was going every day.

To try to get that phone?

Because I knew what
was on that phone,

because I heard it myself.

So, I wanna read
you something, okay?

I'm going to read you something.
Have you see the police report?

No.

Berlinger: We show Robin
the initial police report

that states
Detective Twila Goble

took Megan's cellphone
into evidence

at the scene
where her body was found.

I'm pissed.
I'm pissed.

They said the phone
wasn't even brought there.

Berlinger: Robin's concerns
about Twila Goble

didn't end with the cellphone.

She says Detective Goble
took Megan and Charlotte Trego

out of state
to Detroit, Michigan,

250 miles
from Chillicothe,

shortly before their deaths.

I said, "Why in the hell
would you get in a car

with Twila Goble?"

"She was just taking
us up there.

We were going to have
a good time,

go shopping up and everything."

"Why would Twila Goble
take you shopping?"

She said, "Ma," she says,

"You don't know
how well I know Twila."

She said Twila was
feeding them dope, too.

Your daughter told you
that Twila was actually

giving them dope
during this time?

She kept them high, yes.

You heard that
from your daughter's mouth?

Yes, my daughter said that.

Wow.

I can't see Twila running off
with these girls

unless they were
working for her.

Maybe she's using them

to get to someone else.

Berlinger:
If what Robin says is true,

we wonder if there is a problem

at the Chillicothe
Police Department.

We can't confirm
if any allegations

against law enforcement
are true,

and we know that there
are many dedicated

and hard-working members

of the Chillicothe
Police Department.

However, accusations
of police misconduct

are becoming a common theme.

Although people
involved in criminal activity

often make unfounded accusations
against the police,

our confidential informant,
"Danielle,"

said she personally witnessed

questionable behavior
by Officer Chip Campbell.

Mm-hmm.

How about Chip Campbell
and Dollar Bill

getting mixed up together,

you know, from point of he was
an informant or possible snitch?

Mm-hmm.

Berlinger:
Our confidential informant

isn't the only one with stories
of alleged problematic behavior

involving Officer Chip Campbell.

From our office in New York,
we talk with

former Chillicothe drug dealer,
Ronald Wollum,

in an interview via the prison's
video-visitation system.

Do you know of any police
corruption that Chip Campbell

might have taken part in?

Absolutely.
[Bleep] [Bleep]

Do you know which
girls were actually working

with Chip or Twila?

What was Chip Campbell

and Twila Goble's relationship
with Dollar Bill,

if you know?

Berlinger: Two sources have come
forward with allegations

that Dollar Bill was working
as an informant

for Officer Chip Campbell.

If these allegations are true,
it would be ironic

that someone who may have
been killing these women

because they were informants
may have been

an informant himself.

of individual acts of police
misconduct in Chillicothe,

we re-examine the case
of Timberly Claytor.

Woman: Ross County Sheriff's
Office confirms

38-year-old Timberly Claytor
is the woman

found shot to death
outside Chillicothe.

Berlinger: Timberly's case

is the only one
that has gone to trial.

By looking into how police
handled the investigation,

it may shine a light on

how they are treating
potential witnesses

in the other
victim's cases.

Man: We, the jury in this case,
find the defendant,

Jason McCrary,
guilty of murder.

Berlinger: Jason's guilty
verdict is due in large part

to the testimony
of the only eye witness,

Jessica Lowry,

who declined to have
her face shown on camera.

But Jason points the finger
at Ernest "Dollar Bill" Moore,

a person of interest
in our investigation.

It was Dollar Bill.

All I heard was,
"pop, pop-pop" like that.

Berlinger: Now, we've been able
to secure

the actual police
body camera footage

that appears to
put into question

the validity
of Jessica's testimony.

Clemente: So, it's
Detective Winfield's body cam

taking the star witness
against Jason McCrary

out to the scene of the crime

where Timberly Claytor
was murdered.

Berlinger: Even though
Detective Winfield

parks on the side
of the building

where Timberly's body was found,

Jessica walks him straight over

to the wrong side
of the building.

Now, watch what he does.

He takes the flashlight
and flashes it.

Now, do you notice
what he's flashing at?

He's flashing at the cross.

And says, "You sure?"

Berlinger:
Whether purposefully or not,

it appears that
Detective Winfield

may be leading the witness

to change her
original statement.

That's kinda coercing.

And he keeps pointing
to the memorial cross

of where her body was found.
Right. Right.

Berlinger: Is Jessica Lowry
a credible witness?

At trial, Defense Attorney
Greg Meyers tries

to poke holes in her story.

Meyers: Now, do you remember you
talked to

Detective Winfield
and he kept asking

if you were sure,
"Are you sure, are you sure?"

And then, you changed your mind.

[ Telephone rings ]

Berlinger: Those close to
Jessica tell us her testimony

may be tied to getting custody
of her child.

Hi,
this is Angela Clemente.

How are you?

Berlinger: Angela contacts
the father of

Jessica Lowry's daughter to find
out if Jessica had any reason

to potentially falsify
her testimony.

He requested that we not record
the conversation.

How did you hear, um, that --

that she made a deal
with the D.A.?

Berlinger:
Although Jessica Lowry

had previously been determined
to be an unfit mother,

he tells Angela that around the
time of Jason McCrary's trial,

she suddenly regained custody
of her daughter.

So, do you feel that
she was given custody back

because she testified?

He's saying she was offered
this deal with the DA,

and he lost custody.
And so...

So, she's cooperating
to get her children back.

So, she's cooperating.

There might be a pattern
of the detectives

threatening women.
Threatened to take her children.

Wow.

It changes
the whole trial story.

Well, it makes the McCrary
conviction seem quite dubious.

It does.

And no wonder they
subpoenaed our material,

because that prosecutor
is very concerned

about the integrity of that
conviction, I'm sure.

Right. And, you know,
we've got a prosecutor

that's directly involved.

If you look at the whole
trial in totality

and then you add
all of these other pieces

that we've now gathered
in our investigation,

there needs to be a new trial.

And -- and they need to re-look
at this whole case again.

Berlinger: After the conviction,

Angela cultivates a relationship
with Jason McCrary

and corresponds with him
via e-mail about his case.

Her speciality is
getting inmates to trust her

and provide information.

And in late May,
Angela's diligence pays off.

There's new breaking news.

On Wednesday, I got a call,
a panicked call,

pretty early in the morning,
saying,

"Ms. Clemente,
this is Jason McCrary.

I just got stabbed.

Somebody just came in my cell.

They pushed their way
into the cell.

I just got stabbed in the head.

I need you
to contact anybody,

a warden, contact somebody,
somebody," and I said, "Okay."

Did they say why
he was being stabbed?

He didn't say anything.

He didn't want
to talk very much.

Berlinger: Angela immediately
contacts the prison

and reports
what Jason just told her.

And he was actually stabbed
a second time

as he was leaving the phone.

And they got him
in the face this time.

So, the first time in the head,
the second time in the face.

Wow. Was it because
he's speaking to us, and word --

word got out that
he's talking?

That I don't know.
I don't -- I'm not sure.

Jason is treated
for his injuries

and put into protective custody.

We immediately set up
a Skype call

with Jason's newly appointed
appellate attorney, Rick Kerger,

to see what he can tell us
about this shocking development.

Clemente: Uh, Jason McCrary,
we found out that he was, um,

recently attacked
in the prison.

-Right.
-Do you think it was a warning

or were they really
trying to kill him?

Well, I don't know.

Typically with a shanking,

when you've seen them in
prisons, it's in the body.

It's not up in the head area.

Maybe he was trying
to get the carotid.

I don't know.
That certainly would do it.

So, they were
trying to kill him.

Yes.

Why do you think
he was attacked?

I think Dollar Bill could be
nervous about the matters

being developed through
his post-conviction work,

and it might point
the finger at him.

And he knows from what
Jason testified at trial,

the efforts of the department
are going to be directed at him.

So, you think Dollar Bill
might have ordered that --

that stabbing?

Yes.

He certainly is
the head of the list.

Okay, interesting.

Berlinger:
If Jason's attorney is right

and Dollar Bill
did order the stabbing,

it lends credence
to Jason's testimony

that Dollar Bill is the one
who shot Timberly Claytor

and wants to keep
Jason from talking.

We've spent the last
year and a half

investigating the murders
and disappearances

of nine women
in Southern Ohio.

From the information
and evidence we've gathered,

Dollar Bill is
a person of interest

in more than
half of these cases --

Charlotte Trego,

Tameka Lynch,

Megan Lancaster,

Tiffany Sayre,

and Timberly Claytor.

He has not been charged
in any of these cases,

but on May 30th, 2017,

Dollar Bill is sentenced to

13 years and four months
in prison

on federal drug
trafficking charges.

This sentence will be
added to the 10 years

he is already serving

for the torture
of Arthur Hamlin.

So, Crail is our second
person of interest,

who used to work
for Dollar Bill.

We think he's still
connected to Tameka,

and the problem now
is you have Crail Brooks

possibly getting out from jail
in the next couple months.

He's a repeat offender,
so he generally re-offends

and then goes back in, and
re-offends, and goes back in.

For something.
Right.

I'm concerned
for the community.

I'm concerned
for any retaliation

he thinks that
he needs to deal out

because he might
have been wronged

over the time period
that he was in prison.

The fact that he's
getting out of jail now,

I think it's a dangerous time.

Yeah, I agree.
I agree.

The Crail and Dollar stories

really just
shine a light

on just what happens

when drugs move in,

when heroin takes over.

Police are overwhelmed.

...being the suspicious person.
