She has all of this under her belt at such a young age,

and that's what I want to do.

Larriah: At first, I was like, "Whoa,

that's a big song."

I know, but big song for big voices.

When I choose a song for really young singers,

You want to make sure that the content of the lyrics

is age‐appropriate and they could wrap their heads around it

and it's upbeat, but it's still emotional.

Julia: Larriah's such an old soul.

I was just so compelled by her voice.

Whoo! Let's go!

Julia: If she's singing like that at 15,

I can't even imagine what she's gonna be singing like at my age.

Carter was not what I was expecting.

That sweet boy can project like I've never heard.

I threw my paper. I was like, "Alright."

I can't even sing like this, and you guys are 14 and 15.

when you're, like, your guys' age.

You're finding your identity.

It's such a struggle being a teenager.

It is, but that was mind‐blowing.

I feel like it sounds a little too sad at the beginning.

Okay. I'd love to hear the beginning

where it's just a little bit stronger. Stronger.

Okay. You sound so soft

because you project so fully.

It's not like you don't get there at the end.

Like, girl, you get there,

Everyone's gonna be shocked because in your blinds,

you didn't really do that at all.

You sing with, like, so much intention.

You sing from such, like, a deep place.

I want to know your story.

Larriah: My biological father left when I was 2.

He just chose not to be here and that's on him,

and in came my stepdad.

He saw me as his own, which was

an amazing thing for him to do.

He did not have to be there for me,

to have to come to countless shows that I've done.

He is a role model for me,

and I've tried my hardest to channel those emotions

and that love that I have for my family.

Everybody knows that I just want a daughter.

Is that weird? Like ‐‐ Ha!

I mean, your singing talent is so unbelievable.

Thank you. Thank you. Your voice is so rich and warm

and dreamy. Thank you so much.

I'm just excited to see where Gwen takes me,

and I'm excited to see where I take myself.

This experience has definitely matured me

and, you know, shown me what I can really do.

Yeah. Carter, it's interesting

because every time you'd do something, I saw

Julia go, "Ooh!"

[ Laughs ]

I was like, "Whoo!" The way you do your style

reminds me of the earlier stuff he was doing, you know?

Finding body language is something

that comes over a long period of time,

and I think the whole key to it

is to be able to, like, make the right choices

when you're trying to show off your voice

at the right emotional moment.

Carter: I have reason to sing from my heart

and showcase that emotional side.

I have a brother who was diagnosed

with autism at the age of 2.

He teaches me so much more than I could ever teach him.

I have always been a theater kid

ever since, like, the fifth grade.

I definitely think theater has prepared me

for a moment like this.

It's really given me experience

with showing stage presence,

and it really helped me connect emotionally to a song as well.

♪ To make your heart beat better? ♪

You do not look like your voice, okay?

Where is the person who was singing?

I loved your voice.

The tone was so beautiful.

It was shocking to me.

I think I'm gonna go with Gwen.

My heart is broken. Carter!

Carter: It's definitely intimidating

to be one of the younger ones

because everyone here is so insanely talented,

but that's kind of where the acting comes in.

During the song, I gonna have to think about my family

and how much I love them like I'm gonna lose them.

You know, this is a battle, but it's also a duet.

You got to be able to show your stage presence together.

Julia: For Larriah, she already has that emotion.

She was singing from a real place of pain

and vulnerability.

Carter, he has a beautiful voice.

You just don't expect that power to come out of that body,

but he might have to dig a Little Deeper

to find the emotion of it.

This is going to probably be your toughest decision.

because of the age difference.

I mean, Larriah,

I mean, you are months older than Carter.

When this thing started, I thought Larriah had the edge

because I just felt like she had a little bit more of a grip

on the song and little bit more control,

but then I think Carter may have caught on to that.

When he came in on his half of the first chorus,

it was like, "Whoa. What the hell is this kid doing now?"

I guess if I was having to just say a reason,

Larriah, she ended as strong as she started.

You both were just wonderful.

Usually, I'm very judgy when it comes to songs that I recorded,

but I was thoroughly impressed with your take on the song.

Thank you. I thought you found new places to go musically

with the song. Carter, you know,

I wanted you on my team.

Gwen: I'm sorry. I feel like I had a good shot.

And I was really, like, a little bit hurt

But I did feel you were just so impressive

and interesting musically.

You have already lived a whole life at 15 years old,

and Julia saw that in you

and saw that you were singing from your heart.

Carter, I think you have this incredible voice

that you can do all this stuff with,

and you're just getting started.

To watch you perform the way you did,

you just had a lot more confidence

in your body language, and I saw a big growth in that.

Vocally, you just were so incredible today.

Daly: You have two incredible young artists.

We know how you feel about both of them.

Unfortunately, you can only pick one.

Gwen, who's the winner of this battle?

My dream on the show is to work with young artists,

and I got two of them here that I think are so magic.

I mean, even having him audition for the show,

much less choose me as his coach.

Aaron: When I saw those chairs turn around,

that confidence boost took me to another level.

Blake: We don't get a lot of rock artists.

And then Ian, it's got to be tricky

to figure out how to make a voice

that is so low connect with people.

because I've been gigging full time for the past 4 years.

My partner in life, Ayla,

books the shows, does all the management,

and also Ayla and I started a production company together.

We focus on artist development,

which is interviews for making videos,

just trying to help independent artists

I love doing it because I know in music

sometimes, it can feel hopeless,

and just to even experience some kindness in this world

can make you go on for another year.

I remember last season, I was sitting

with my kid in my lap and I was watching you

talk to Todd Michael Hall. I remember that moment

where I was like, "I can do this."

Like, "I should try," and now to be here...

Well, I'm married to a very beautiful, wonderful woman.

We have three boys. She has been a huge

support every step of the way.

So right now I'm out here in LA,

and my wife has taken on everything back home

and I could not be more humbled by all the support

that she's given me to be out here.

I got to give this everything I got for her.

Are you holding back at all?

It's kind of like that balance where you want to hit it,

but you don't want to go sharp. Yeah.

I just felt like I wanted to feel you push

a little more, just, like, that '90s voice,

where you can just feel it in your bones.

Yeah. [ Chuckles ] I think I came from a zero singing ability,

so if I can do it, anybody in America can do it.

Aaron's got a range that can cut through

any kind of band arrangement,

and that means I gotta do my absolute best

to match him there.

And then you're doing a harmony part

over his melody, right?

Yeah. Yeah, when you came in

with the higher stuff towards the end,

it was like, "Whoa, he's pushing,"

you know what I'm saying? Like, I would think

it would be to your advantage

to do something that kind of demonstrates

what your capabilities are, you know?

Yeah, I'm pretty laid‐back.

I think it's just a deep voice thing, man.

Kane even walks slow.

That's how I walk.

When Kane texts you, like,

the little text bubble just goes on forever

because he's just... [ Laughter ]

I think Ian, he's kind of like me.

When you have a deep voice, there's a certain pocket.

I think he's still trying to find it.

Now it's just trying to think,

"Got him on my team, what's he going to be

capable of on down the road here?

What can we do?" Ian's voice does have

such a cool, unique tone.

It makes me want to just up my game to the next level.

This is the time,

maybe even more than the blind auditions,

to show what you're capable of doing.

Kane: The key for Ian is going to be finding out

how far his voice can go.

Aaron has a very powerful voice.

There's another gear there that he can hit

that will make him almost Steven Tyler‐like.

You guys are so talented. It's actually ridiculous.

Fantastic job.

Aaron, I think the most impressive part

of your performance was just hearing your range

and the power of your voice,

but it wasn't clear who you were,

whereas Ian, I felt like

it was so much identity and character in your voice.

The rasp, the gravel, that was more compelling for me,

and I would lean toward Ian if I were Blake.

It was really hard because it felt really balanced,

yet you guys are so different.

With Aaron, some of the choices that you made

changing up the melody were kind of shocking in a good way.

It was creative, and your voice is so clear

and powerful. With Ian,

nobody has a voice that sounds like that.

It's just so rare,

and I always tend to be attracted

to rarer, stylized voices.

The way you are on stage feels really natural.

Thank you. Kelly: Aaron, I like you on this song,

but I felt like it kind of tamed you a bit

from what I saw and heard from you in the blinds.

But, Aaron, you did an amazing job,

and you happen to be

one of my favorite vocalists this season.

I think that you have an incredible tone.

I was, like, glued to you.

Like, it was inappropriate.

Like, I was literally just, like...

I was like, "I got to stop looking."

I saw her doing that, by the way.

Well, it's not that often that, you know,

I get a battle pairing where I feel like every single note

that was given in the rehearsals came into play here,

and that just goes to show your professionalism

and how eager you are to get this done up here today.

And you literally both did it, and really the only notes

that we're hearing are a little more taste‐driven

than technically speaking, you know?

And so I just want to say thanks and respect and all that

for you two putting in the time and the work.

They're both from two iconic musical cities

in America. Okay.

The day of the blind auditions,

I was extremely nervous.

I was sweating.

Oh, yes, baby, yes!

When I got three chairs, it was just surreal.

You like me, you really like me.

I pressed my button almost immediately.

The thing that impresses me most is when vocalists

go to places I just wouldn't think of.

John: When your voice came in,

it was just magical from the very beginning.

...John Legend. Yeah!

I picked John because I'm a male R&B solo artist

from the East Side of Detroit.

It hasn't been easy attempting to pursue an R&B music career

while being openly gay.

People kind of view it,

you know, from a different lens.

They're not as accepting,

so I have faced some shady little moments

when I'm trying to perform.

It's been difficult, but I can't focus

on what happened back at home.

I'm extremely proud to be here,

and I am going to give it everything I have.

Casmé sang "Baby I Love You," Aretha Franklin song.

The blind audition was extremely emotional.

Yes ‐‐ the oldest of eight children.

I'm extremely close with my family.

I actually was living in Nashville

at the time of Hurricane Katrina.

My entire family moved to Nashville with me

because our home was pretty much ruined,

so they really had to, like, start from ground zero.

Immediately, I start looking for places for them.

It was a lot of emotions,

and I was trying to be strong for everybody

because I was the oldest, so I just became this Superwoman,

just wearing all the hats just trying to do whatever

I could to make sure my family was good.

So I take this moment very seriously

because it can change my life.

I feel really good.

But you really learn about them

I always aim for an eclectic team.

But this year, really ‐‐

Like, there's opera singers, country singers,

like, really all over the board.

And Knockouts are going to be really hard to choose.

Gwen, it always seems like it's hard for you

to say goodbye to members of your team

because you become so close to them.

Gwen: It's really hard.

You have to make this decision based on the moment,

and there's a lot of emotions.

So you just feel responsible for people,

and you care, you know.

Blake, you always seem like you hold on to your steal

to the last minute.

You know, I think premature button pushing

is a problem with these other three coaches.

And I don't know why in the world

you would use your steal button

within the first couple of battles.

The song is extremely relatable

being a gigging musician,

just because there are some months

when I don't know how I'm going to pay rent that month.

Before "The Voice,"

I was a full‐time gigging musician

in Dallas, Texas.

So I played four to five times a week

with and without my band

depending on what the gig was

and how lucrative it would be

if I could support a band.

On a typical night, we usually have 50 people

in a brewery that are not there to see us.

They there to drink beer.

It's been a long journey,

so an opportunity like "The Voice"

is absolutely monumental to me.

Ryan B.: After the Block on John from Gwen,

that completely threw me over the edge

in terms of my happiness.

I'm glad I didn't fall over.

Honestly, it sounded just so classic.

Gwen, we're doing this thing.

it actually validates

that I'm good at what I'm doing,

and that's something that I struggle with

is self‐confidence.

It was an amazing moment for me.

emotionally, you want to take it on a journey.

Liam, instead of coming, like, full‐blown the whole time,

So then you save some of that power for later.

You have one really great run,

and I would love to find that moment for you. Okay.

When guys are able to use

that part of their voice on this show,

Don't be afraid to, like, dance a little bit.

Liam is so much more of a groover than I am.

I'm getting used to it.

I can move a little bit, I guess.

in terms of me trying to be more open

with the way that I represent myself on the stage

and that stage presence.

She even has some low notes

that I didn't expect to come from her mouth.

the falsetto, the high chest voice.

He has a real sense of artistry and creativity,

and I really enjoyed watching him

find his way into the song.

I was surprised.

that Miguel has so beautifully when he sings.

For you to be able to do what you do up there

Cami: The biggest thing for this song

is making sure that we're both in sync,

because it is a duet.

Some people aren't used to singing with other people,

but I've had plenty of experience.

When I was 17 years old,

I joined a Christian music group called Joyful Noise.

From their, me and the one guitar player

started playing duo gigs.

What did we call ourselves? Like, Cami and Tommy.

Um, 'cause I'm Cami and he's Tommy, so...

[ Laughs ]

James, when you're talking about

"this world will only break your heart,"

that's very angsty, and it's, like, painful.

I don't want to see that same level

at the very beginning,

because then it feels incongruous with...

Miguel: Yeah. ...with the moment.

One thing that's helped me in the past

is, like, how you would tell that story

if you were having a conversation.

Just say the words.

And however your body

naturally would go when describing it,

that might be a good place to go in the song.

Connecting with the audience is a big, big part.

Cami's natural comfortability in telling stories

might cut through.

James: I've never had a vocal lesson,

and I don't have a lot of experience

The one thing I was worried about

was how am I gonna perform?

How am I going to move?

That's all I was thinking about.

I have OCD, obsessive‐compulsive disorder.

You know, I get stressed about something going on,

and then my brain will just replay it

and replay it and replay it.

A lot of my musical journey

has just been, like, me by myself in the studio,

because I'm afraid that at any moment,

I will just be totally blocked.

In February of this year, I was finally was like,

"okay, I think I can go perform."

And yeah, I have done three gigs in my life

before coming here.

Now I have four.

Yeah, and one in front of John Legend,

John: Make sure you're both thinking about the blend,

but also thinking about,

"I want to make my mark on this competition."

This one is going to be hard.

I'm waiting to see what they do when the pressures on,

and I'll make my decision based on my gut response

to how they do in that moment.
