Berlinger: In the small town
of Chillicothe, Ohio,

six women have gone missing,

young mothers caught
in a vicious cycle

of addiction and prostitution.

Four of them
have turned up dead.

-Is there a serial killer?
-A serial killer...

Man: It could be the work
of a serial killer.

Berlinger:
I'm Joe Berlinger.

I'm a documentary filmmaker
and an activist.

There's a lot of loose ends
to this story.

For this investigation,
I've teamed up

with forensic intelligence
analyst Angela Clemente

to find out what happened
to these women

and to help give their families
some answers.

We got to get justice.

All of us in here
have to get justice.

Berlinger: We've been looking
into the possibility

that a serial killer
is on the loose.

Woman: I found a woman's body
in a crick.

Oh, God, please hurry.

When we look at the totality
of this investigation,

a serial killer
is a real possibility.

If you look at the map
over here,

they were last seen
in a cluster.

Berlinger:
As our investigation ramps up,

the question we want answered,

"Is the killer among us,
hiding in plain sight?"

Ruth: There's somebody out there
that knows what went on,

but they just won't tell
because they're scared.

Man: So we pray Our Father...

Woman:
He put the gun to my chest,
and he said, "Live or die?"

Woman #2:
Everybody who knows information

and tries to come out and talk
about it, they end up dead.

Man: He gave her a hot shot
of heroin.

Woman #3: And I said,
"I know who your son is,

and I know what he did, too."

Sam: If she's out there,

please just let her go
and let her come home.

Dutchess:
I know everybody says that,

you know, everything
happens for a reason.

No, it don't.

My best friend was found
in this water, dead,

with an unborn child.

There's no reason for that.

Berlinger:
Six months after Charlotte Trego

and Tameka Lynch
go missing in Chillicothe,

another young woman mysteriously
disappears from the area.

Dutchess:
I was about 8 years old
when I met Shasta.

We went to the same church.

We hung out
at her grandma's house.

She was just a goofball.

She was just
a good-hearted person.

When her dad passed away,
Shasta inherited $50,000.

She had big plans for it.
She wanted to buy a house.

But, you know, our town is --

It's going through
a heroin epidemic right now...

...and drugs are really bad.

She started getting into,

you know,
little bit harsher things.

She was buying pills
and doing heroin and cocaine.

That money was being spent
on partying a lot.

She was buying other people's
drugs and alcohol.

And then Shasta got involved
with Michael Owes.

They all partied together.

Shasta felt that she genuinely
loved Michael Owes.

She seemed like
she was really happy.

Clemente: When did you last hear
from Shasta?

December 16th of 2014.

She said, "I found out
that I'm having a baby."

I said,
"Are you excited about this?

Are you ready for it?"

She says, "This is a blessing,
and I couldn't imagine it

with any other man.

I'm just so happy.
I really want this."

And that was the end
of our conversation.

Berlinger:
On Christmas Day 2014,
20-year-old Shasta Himelrick

leaves her grandmother's house
and never returns.

Throne: The disappearance
of Shasta Himelrick

really is the one
that I think sends

a bigger shock wave
through the community.

She's pregnant. She's young.

She's pretty.

She got a text message,
and she said,

"I've got to go, Granny,"
said, "I'll be back,"

but she never came back.

She caught on a gas-station
security camera

several hours
before the car is found.

Reporter: Police located
Shasta Himelrick's vehicle

at this remote intersection.

Reporter #2:
There is no sign of Himelrick,

and her family
is growing more fearful

with every hour that passes.

It is the one case
that probably baffles people

in this community
more than anything else.

Berlinger:
At around 5:15 p.m.,

Shasta gets a text and leaves
her grandmother's house.

At 3:15 a.m.,

a security camera places her
at the Speedway gas station

on East Main.

At 7:32 a.m.,
Shasta's abandoned car is found

near the Higby Road Bridge.

Throne:
They had found her car.

**

The doors were open.

The battery was dead.

**

Woman:
When we first got here,

we thought
maybe the car broke down.

Throne:
But there's some small amounts
of blood inside the car.

Woman: I mean, there was
trickles everywhere.

Her shoes were placed
on top of the bridge.

Woman: Literally, her shoes
were like side by side.

And I look at the cops,
you know, and I'm like,

"Anybody look in the water?"

It didn't take me long
to think something bad
had happened to her,

especially because
she wasn't with Mike.

She didn't really
go too far from him.

Berlinger:
Fearing for his own life,

Shasta's friend agrees
to tell us what he knows

on the condition
that we hide his identity.

Timothy:
Right after she went missing,

everybody was searching for her,

but Mike Owes was at her house
drinking and partying.

You know,
that was a big red flag.

I was like, that's kind of odd
that we're all down here

and he's not really
worried about it.

[ Train horn blares ]

**

The Ross County Sheriff's Office
tells me they recovered the body

about 3/4 of a mile
to a mile south of here

in the Scioto River.

Shasta Himelrick was
a very difficult case.

The cause of death for
Shasta Himelrick was drowning,

and I ruled the manner
as suicide.

Dutchess:
It just doesn't make any sense.

I don't think Shasta
committed suicide,

because she was genuinely happy.

I think somebody had
threw her off the bridge.

Clemente: In Shasta's case,
what indicated suicide to you?

There were
no defensive wounds.

Shasta Himelrick had what
are called hesitation marks

on her arms.

Oftentimes when people
aren't quite sure

that they want to
complete this act,

they make superficial cuts.

There were no other external
signs of a fatal injury.

[ Telephone rings ]

Shasta's case has been
ruled a suicide

and the cause of death drowning.

That's just the ruling
that it is.

Clemente: Has anyone else
ever jumped off that bridge?

I've been here 40 years.
I've never noted anybody to.

Berlinger:
While the Ross County coroner
ruled Shasta's death a suicide,

her family and friends
suspect foul play.

Duchess: It's not right.

It's very upsetting
for the family and friends.

Whoever did it, we will find you
and Shasta will have justice.

Berlinger:
How likely is that a suicide,
in your mind, at this point?

People don't
commit suicides generally

in an uncomfortable
fashion.

She was an avid swimmer.
Yeah.

So jumping off of a bridge
in icy-cold weather

at the end of December,

that's not
a comfortable way to die.

If you're an addict,

you're probably gonna choose
a way that's simple,

like taking a drug
and going to sleep.

In other words, Joe,

we could be looking
at a staged suicide.
Right.

Where it's really --
It could be a homicide.

Berlinger:
Following up on this theory,

Angela meets
with Shasta's family

to gather more information.

I wrote this and had them
put it in the Gazette

so people could see
what Shasta was like.

"She was a beautiful
baby girl,

born on February 22,
1994."

[ Sniffles ]

"She was the most
unselfish person

one could ever
hope to meet."

She was.

"Heroin captured
my beautiful granddaughter.

But someone
took her life."

The coroner has ruled
her death as a suicide.

They reckon that she went down,
put herself in the river,

and committed suicide,
but I just don't see it.

Shasta's boyfriend, he never
went and searched for Shasta.

He didn't search?
He didn't try to help?
Oh, no.

Just a few days
after that,

my daughter went down
to go through her things.

When she went in the house,

there was another female
in Shasta's bed.

Mike was there
and cocaine on the table

and a gun with the serial
number scratched out.

**

Throne: Suspicion goes on
the boyfriend, at that point.

His previous girlfriend
had died of a drug overdose

about a year before
Shasta's disappearance.

And there's all these
concerns about

criminal activity in his past.

This leads a lot of folks
to believe that maybe

he might know more
than what he's saying.

Berlinger: Those close to Shasta

believe she was murdered
that December night,

just as she was beginning
a new chapter in her life.

Dutchess: She said, "I found out
that I'm having a baby.

This is a blessing,
and I couldn't imagine it

with any other man.

I'm just so happy.
I really want this."

Michael...
I don't think he really

loved her, but he --
you know, she had money.

Shasta spent a lot
of money on Mike.

And then right after
the last penny was gone,

she went missing.

Lavender: Michael Owes
was supposedly her boyfriend

at the time.

He had went out
to another house,

where he had a known girl

that he had associated with
in the past.

We interviewed Michael Owes.

The last time that he spoke to
her was sometime after 3:00 a.m.

Shasta wanted Michael
to stay with her

because it was their
first Christmas together.

He wanted to go
to another residence.

We talked to the individual
that the residence

they were supposedly at,

and they confirmed
that Michael Owes had an alibi.

Shirley:
He seems sincere.

But really, you can't
tell about people.

**

Berlinger: There are still
many unanswered questions

in the Shasta Himelrick case.

Who was with her
that Christmas night?

How reliable
is her boyfriend's alibi?

And is her death
connected to the other women

in our investigation?

[ Police radio chatter ]

Then, just two days
after Shasta disappears,

another woman
is reported missing...

Wanda Lemons,
a 37-year-old mother of five.

Lytle: Now, you know,
I personally knew Wanda Lemons.

We were actually involved in
a church youth group together.

I was the youth pastor, and
she was one of the individuals

that worked with the youth.

They were just attracted to her.

Just she had that
magnetic-type personality.

She was just
one of those people.

But she had had struggles
her entire life

with drug addiction.

She had a child at a young age.

She had been a prostitute
in Texas

before moving up here to Ohio.

Someone had brought up
that Wanda had possibly

got in with a truck driver.

So in that case,
you're contacting agencies

and individuals
all over the United States.

I just want to know where she's
at or if she's still alive.

I know somebody
out there knows something.

I just want my baby girl
to come home.

You know, I came back here
20 years ago.

And I'll tell you what --
if I knew what I know now,

I would have never
come back to Chillicothe.

[ Siren wails ]

Berlinger: As 2015 begins,
the Chillicothe Police

are investigating
two suspicious deaths...

[ Police radio chatter ]

...and actively searching
for two missing women.

Throne:
People talk about the media
only covering bad stories.

Well, unfortunately, there's
a lot of bad stories to cover.

It just terrifies you.

People are scared to death.
They're afraid to come out.

They're afraid --
They're afraid to talk.

They're afraid to do
anything here anymore.

Mutasa: Investigators
are pleading with the public

to be their extra eyes and ears.

Berlinger: Does it feel
like a serial killer?

You think
that's a valid theory?

There are some elements here,
yes.

Sometimes when you have
a serial killer

and if there's
a sexual element to it,

and if they were delving
into prostitution,

sometimes there's
certain types

that are called
"missionary" serial killers.

They're the type that
kind of want to rid society

of the bad.

That type would
target prostitutes.

Lytle:
A lot of times when you look
at serial killer-type cases,

there's some similarity
in the victims.

Tameka Lynch was found in water.

Tiffany Sayre,
that's found near water.

You look at Shasta Himelrick,
that's found in water.

Clemente: It's really
getting complex.

There's, you know,
some patterns,

but then there's
some scattered pieces

that just don't fit.

Berlinger:
With a growing collection

of case files to examine

and persons of interest
to follow up on,

we decide to bring in someone
with extensive experience

in criminal behavior
assessment,

retired FBI agent
Steve Bongardt.

Joe, nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, finally.

Nice to meet you.
As you'll see,

it's a pretty overwhelming case,
and, you know,

even the local authorities
seem overwhelmed.

So first,
I brought in Angela.

Hi, Angela,
nice to finally meet you.

Nice to meet you,
as well.

Why don't we just, you know,
go through these files,

pull up some chairs?
Bongardt: Yep.

See what
we can come up with.

So what do you
think our...

Berlinger: The investigation
zeroes in on an incident

that occurred in July 2015,

just two hours
outside of Chillicothe.

He strangled me.

He just wouldn't let me
get any air.

And so I grabbed my rake.

And when he laid the gun down
to get the rake out of my hands,

I -- I shot him.

Reporter:
A suspected serial killer who
had the tables turned on him,

killed by a woman he was about
to make his next victim.

Reporter #2:
The man she killed, Neal Falls.

He's now linked to at least
six women's deaths,

but could be tied
to dozens of others

in nine different states.

Man: Mr. Falls had a firearm,
handcuffs,

large cache of trash bags,
and bleach.

There was a large tub in his
vehicle with a lid on it,

that most women could fit into.

Bongardt:
So let's break this down.

So there's Charleston,
and here's Chillicothe.

From what we can tell
so far, the targeting
is a little different.

This guy targeted
via online.

The Chillicothe women
were not advertising online.
Exactly.

Let's look
at his kill kit.

This is a classic case of
the organized sexual homicide.

That's the combination
of sexual sadist and psychopath.

A lot of people
think sadists,

it's about hurting
the other person.

It's not. It's the control
of hurting and taking it away.

The women that
we're talking about

don't have that evidence
on their body.

They don't have
that evidence of a struggle.

We don't have any of
those defensive wounds.

So I think we can
rule out Neal Falls.

You know, looking at the
kill kit and the methodology,

it seems pretty
reasonable to assume

that Neal Falls
was not related.

I would have loved
for Neal Falls to have
been the answer,

but, obviously,
that's not the case.

It's different,
behaviorally.

It's kind of back to
the drawing board again for us.

Right? It's happening
around this timeframe.

Berlinger: It is becoming clear
that the string of deaths

and disappearances
in Chillicothe

do not fit the pattern
of a conventional serial killer,

but we can't rule out
the possibility

that a single person
of interest

might be involved
in all five of these cases.

A year after Tameka
and Charlotte disappeared,

justice still feels
a long way off

for friends and family members.

Man: We just ask that
you'd bless these people.

Everyone's been hurt.
Everyone's been put in the dark.

**

Berlinger:
Then the community receives
news of a shocking development.

Lavender: We received a call
on a Friday morning.

Somebody had seen some blood
in the parking lot

by the old
Massieville Dairy Bar,

and they went over and seen
a body laying in the weeds.

Berlinger: On May 29, 2015,

Timberly Claytor
is found murdered.

Reporter: Ross County
Sheriff's Office confirms

38-year-old Timberly Claytor

is the woman found shot to death
outside Chillicothe.

I was the first detective
on the scene.

She was in the parking lot
next to the building.

She was shot in the head.

I'm sure all these girls

had some connection
with one another.

[ Bell dinging ]

Berlinger:
Angela continues to speak
to friends and family members,

looking for connections
between the six victims.

Secrest: Timberly's been
a big part of my life.

She was my mother, my aunt,
my sister, my best friend,

all wrapped in one.

I've known her
since I was 8.

She's been using
since she was 17, 18.

At first,
it was painkillers.

She actually got
in a bad car accident,

and they prescribed them
to her.

You know,
she got addicted.

When painkillers
didn't work no more,

she went to heroin.

But she was more
than her drug addiction.

[ Birds chirping ]

Castle: I knew Timberly.
Timberly was very outgoing.

She didn't care what she said.
You know?

You'd be clear across the room
or clear across the parking lot,

and she's gonna yell.

A few months before
this happened, she said,

"I've got to get off this,
the drugs and stuff.

I can't do it no more."

She seemed like, you know,

she wanted away
from the whole scene.

She was done.

And then to hear
that she was murdered,

very, very shocking.

I couldn't understand why.
Still don't understand why.

Berlinger: Angela returns
to speak with Yvonne,

the mother
of the first missing woman,

Charlotte Trego,

hoping to find a link
to the other victims.

So, there's been a lot
of missing women

and a lot of
murdered women.

Did Charlotte know
any of these missing women?

**

Yes.

She knew 'em all.

Oh, she knew 'em all?

I'm not sure about Wanda.

Okay. Shasta?
Mm-hmm.

They were in jail together.
Yeah.

Berlinger: Knowing what
our six victims had in common

helps us identify
the people and factors

that may explain their deaths.

Berlinger: So as we gather
our victimology,

are there
any other patterns?

Well, of course,
they've all been involved

in some type
of prostitution and...

Addiction.
...addiction and drugs.

But aside from that,
what I want to show you...

interesting,
there's jail rosters

that we were able to pull.

Shasta is on the roster
with Charlotte Trego.

Shasta is on the jail roster
with Timberly Claytor.

So this means
we're talking about, again,

commonalities and linkages.

So it's not wrapped up
as nice as it would be

if we had a sexual
serial killer on the loose?

But still a whodunit,
right?

Right, and you still have
a very, very close

group of victims
that know each other.

Right.

Washburn: This whole case
is gonna be solved by one tip.

One person knows one little
tidbit of information

that's gonna completely
unravel this case.

[ Police radio chatter ]
Berlinger:
Knowing that just one lead

could trigger a ripple effect,
we concentrate on the case with

the biggest trail of evidence,
Timberly Claytor.

We got information
of a male subject

that Claytor was last seen with.

There was video that was
recovered from Speedway

that showed the vehicle.

Reporter:
Detectives quickly tracked down
that white car in the video

to the home of Jason McCrary's
girlfriend.

Jason McCrary is pretty
well-known by law enforcement,

because he has a past history.

He had been convicted of
a sex offense on a minor.

He is found to be living
in a house that's within a mile

or so of where
Timberly's body is found.

Berlinger:
Jason McCrary's Facebook pages
are full of graphic images

of violence and handguns.

Throne: He possessed two
or three Facebook pages,

one of which listed
his occupation as

"The Keeper of Souls."

Berlinger: Turns out,
he also has connections

to a few of the other
missing women.

He knew all the women.
They all knew him.

Shasta knew Jason McCrary.

They had been around
each other at Shasta's house.

Ruth: Tiffany used to
walk the streets,

and there's one guy
who beat the shit out of her.

Oh, I was mad.

I said, "Call the law,"
and she wouldn't call the law.

But he beat the hell out of her.

Sanford:
Tiffany said that she was out
walking Second Street.

She goes and does business
with this guy,

and they go into a garage
over off Hickory Street,

and he beats her up
and she barely made it out.

And she had told me
that was Jason McCrary.

**

Investigators recovered
a great deal of evidence...

...including blood, DNA,
and a bullet.

Jason A. McCrary,

who is a registered sex
offender, has been arrested.

He's our primary
suspect of interest.

**

Clemente: We've got someone
that has been indicted now

also linked
to Tameka and Tiffany.
Berlinger: Mm-hmm.

So here we have some links

that are starting
to kind of form together.

He could have evolved
from a rapist

to somebody
who's now killing.

Berlinger:
With direct ties

to Timberly, Tiffany,
Tameka, and Shasta

and a rap sheet that includes
aggravated robbery, assault,

and sexual conduct with a minor,

could Jason McCrary be the
killer we've been looking for?

Reporter: Jason McCrary
is facing murder charges

in the death
of Timberly Claytor.

Reporter #2: Investigators
say DNA evidence and blood

links McCrary
to Claytor's death.

Nealeigh: I have not covered
an actual murder trial

since I've been here.

It's not something that
we get very frequently here.

Woman: Judge Ater's chambers.

I just wanted to have
a conversation with him quickly

before the trial starts.

Throne:
There are still women

that are dead
and we don't know why.

And there are still
two women missing,

and we don't know
where they are.

I want to know who did what,
I want to know how they did it,

I want to know if they did it
at their own hands.

I want it all resolved.

Grimm: The McCrary trial
next week is gonna be huge.

Everybody's gonna be
checking our website daily

to get new information.

People want to get closure,
even if it's just

for one of the six girls.

They want to know
what's happened.

Interest is high in this trial,

because Claytor was one of six
Ross County women

who were murdered or went
missing in an 18-month period.

All right, check,
check, check, check.

We need to see whether
there is a connection

with all the other girls.

He did seem to know
a lot of the other girls.

McCrary has beat up my niece,
at one time, very, severely bad.

She wouldn't turn him in,

'cause she was
scared of her life.

I'm hoping that when
whoever done this,

done this to my daughter
is brought to justice,

I'll be sitting
in that same courtroom.

the state of Ohio

The Honorable
Michael Ater presides.

Jason McCrary
is accused of murder,

specifically, the woman by
the name of Timberly Claytor.

Meyers: He was in the Speedway
with her. He had sex with her.

That does not mean he shot her.

We will tell you who shot her.

Berlinger:
As the trial begins,

the prosecution
calls several witnesses

and experts to the stand.

Catron: I noticed a white car,
and he was talking to her.

She says, "I'll be back
in a few minutes,"

and that's the last time
I saw her.

You thought they were
going to have sex.

More or less.
Or dope.

Schmidt: When you arrived,
was there anything

at that house
or in that driveway

that would have immediately
caught your attention?

Winfield:
A four-door Chevy Impala.

And what color, please?
White.

Yeah, there was blood
smeared on the bumper.

These are the shoes worn
by Jason McCrary.

There was a stain found
presumptive positive for blood?

Correct.
That profile is consistent
with Timberly Claytor.

The estimated rarity
of the profile

was 1 in every
490 quintillion,

700 quadrillion.

Did Jason McCrary show
you the firearm he had?

Yes, sir.

You recall what kind
of a firearm that was?

I think
it was a .380.

A .380, as in a .380 caliber?
Is that what we're referring to?

Yes, sir.

So, in your opinion,
all three of those bullets

were fired from
a .380-caliber handgun?

Yes, sir,
that is correct.

Berlinger:
The physical evidence presented

clearly links Jason McCrary
to the scene of the crime,

but a murder conviction
hinges on the testimony

of the only eyewitness
willing to testify.

Did you have any contact
with Jason McCrary that night?

When you first saw
Jason that night,

did he have anybody with him?

Who was driving that car?

And who was in
the front passenger seat?

After Jason arrived with
Timberly, what did you guys do?

When you say "we,"
who are we talking about?

And what did Timberly do when
she had a gun pointed at her?

Who said that?

And what made you decide
to come forward?

No further questions.

Clemente: Jessica Lowry
was clearly traumatized

and very emotional in there.

She was visibly
shaking on the stand.

Reporter: The prosecution
presented witnesses,

all of whom put the blame
for Timberly Claytor's death

squarely on
Jason McCrary's shoulders.

Now it's the defense's turn.

Meyers:
Good afternoon, Miss Lowry.

You've talked about
a lot of different things

here today, right?

Now, is it your testimony today

that Timberly started
to get out of the car

while the car was still moving?

Do you have her in the front
passenger seat this time?

Is that where you say
she's sitting?

You switched that back
and forth a bit,

about front seat, backseat.

You were messed up in the head.

You told the detective
you'd been drinking hard

and taking coke and pills.

You know, this is a murder case.

Doesn't get worse than that,
right?

This is not some little wine
cooler out on the back porch

on a hot summer night, was it?
You were drunk.

You're claiming to be a witness,
an eyewitness to a murder.

It's important.

How many times did the gun fire
before she fell out of the car?

Is it your testimony she started

to open that front
passenger door before

the car had made a U-turn
into the gravel lot?

Is it your testimony
that she got out of the car

before she was shot?

She was drinking
heavily that night,

so that could compromise her,
could raise some doubt there.

Berlinger: Jessica Lowry alleges
that two other witnesses

were present at the time
of the murder.

The defense calls them
to the stand

to hear their version of events.

Carol, were you in a car
when Timberly Claytor got shot?

Jordan: No, sir.

Did you see
Timberly Claytor get shot?

No, sir.

Did you know Timberly
before she died?

No.

Seth,
were you ever in a car

when somebody
shot Timberly Claytor?

Cottrill: No, sir.

Did you know
Timberly Claytor?

No, sir.

I have nothing further.

Clemente: It was very powerful
when the two witnesses

that came in actually said,
"We were not there.

We were not in that car."

Berlinger: When neither
witness corroborates

Jessica Lowry's story,

it casts a shadow of doubt
over her entire testimony.

Meyers: Your Honor,
we would call Mr. McCrary.

Berlinger:
Then in a risky move,

the defense puts
Jason McCrary himself,

the man accused of murdering
Timberly Claytor, on the stand.

Meyers: Your Honor,
we would call Mr. McCrary.

The 28th of May,

could you tell the jury
what you were doing that day?

McCrary: I had left about
1:00 or something, thinking --

I was like, "I'm gonna go see
if anybody's at the bar."

I went up to the Valero.

There was two ladies
sitting on the front step,

and I walked up, and I was like,
"What are you doing?"

And the lady you're talking to,
at that point,

is Timberly Claytor?

It was Timberly.

Told her I was gonna
give her $20 for sex.

And she was like,
"Well, I need to meet somebody."

She was like, "Pull over here
in this parking lot."

And dude had came out
from one of the houses.

He leaned into the car.
He was like, "What's up, J?"

And I was like -- I looked,
and I seen who it was,

and I was like...
like, "What's up?"

Did you recognize the individual
that spoke to you?

Yeah.

It was Dollar Bill.

Berlinger:
"Dollar Bill" is the street name

of a man well-known
