The Legend of Xiao Chuo

Episode 37

Xin.

I'll get dressed.

Your Majesty...

I felt a bit stuffy here,

I would like to go out for some air.

Kaihuang Gate

Your...

Sorry that I woke you.

It's quite late. Where have you been?

Nowhere.

Just took some walk out there.

Mingyi.

Today with Han Kuangsi,

I was wrong.

No, I was wrong.

I came to apologize.

I shouldn't have been mad at you.

And I certainly shouldn't have said those things.

The penalty for Han Kuangsi

has been enacted.

I hope this whole thing

can pass now,

alright?

Edict from His Majesty and Her Highness.

All states and counties will change the tax system.

The head households have to pay rents

to their states and counties,

pay taxes to their lords.

The bell court system will be reestablished.

All states and counties shall conduct careful retrials

on detained cases.

Those who have been wronged

can bring their cases to Censorate.

Nanjing will try out Imperial Examination to select talents.

Scholars from Youzhou and Bohai can attend the test.

All kings and their relatives should be settled

in states and counties.

Shangjing

Little prince.

Hu Dujin.

Little prince.

Hu Dujin.

Little prince.

Why don't you play with him?

Yes.

Yes.

I was thinking,

now that I have sons and daughters,

I have no regrets in my life.

Your Majesty, don't say that.

You have to see how your sons get married.

You've got to pick the husband for Guanyinnü.

Yes.

I just feel sorry for you.

You just gave birth to a son,

then you have to oversee the government.

It's a lot of work on you.

By the way, I wanted to ask you something.

Han Derang and Xiuge went to the army camps,

tried to use the new system to optimize soldiers.

How's that working out so far?

I've just been briefed.

Han Derang has dismissed

those who are incapable.

The troops of each clan

have been incorporated into states and counties.

He listed the names of the brave to the court.

And chose the best and brightest as the royal guards.

With these military powers

being centralized,

there will be less chaos.

Great.

Brother Han knows exactly what troubles me.

Brother Han has never let me down.

And now Imperial Examination system has been restored.

Talents from the poor families

will finally have chance to set foot in the court.

I can already see

the future of prosperity.

I was just thinking,

with Emperor Taizu, Ren Huangwang and father,

for all three generations,

they couldn't complete the Han System reform.

But I did.

I could say my life is not in vain.

I have something to say to

both you and Han Derang.

I

want to say thank you.

Your Majesty.

Her Highness is still dealing with court affairs.

She told you not to wait for her.

Alright, you may leave.

Your Majesty, Your Majesty, Your Majesty!

Go get Diligu!

Yes.

Your Majesty, Your Majesty, Your Majesty!

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Diligu.

Is my condition getting worse?

Your Majesty, are you trying to get up?

Careful.

Careful.

You changed the meds.

I can feel it.

It seems

there's nothing you can do about it.

Your Majesty.

I'll go invite King Yan

to check out for Your Majesty's condition.

I know the skills of Kuangsi

better than you do.

They say doctors can't cure the incurable.

And fortune only favors the fortunate.

Well, it looks like I'm

at the end of my time.

Your Majesty, please don't say that.

The flood has destroyed farmland and housing.

More than 100 villages were devastated.

Dozens of houses collapsed.

His Majesty has arrived.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty.

Your Majesty, why are you here?

You didn't show up for lunch.

So I came to check on you.

Why don't you take a break over there?

I'm fine. It's just that we have some state matters.

I'll take care of them over there.

Then I'll be right here with you.

All right, go ahead.

Don't worry.

Your Highness,

Liao River has flooded.

3,000 acres of farmland has been damaged.

Your Highness,

I have a memorial

awaits for your judgment.

Your Highness, I have a memorial.

Lord Diligu.

Please let King Yan know

I'm here to see him.

I'll do it right now.

There's nothing I can do

about His Majesty's condition.

King Yan.

Would you please come into the palace?

Diligu.

I might have sinned,

but I've always been loyal to His Majesty.

I would rather take my own life

to extend His Majesty's.

You're saying...?

Late Emperor and Yansage

replaced the medicines we used on His Majesty.

They've been doing it for all those years.

If His Majesty had not taken the throne,

there would be nothing we could have done,

even both of us had tried our best.

His Majesty wouldn't have lived to this day.

But even with the best medicines,

what will be will be.

According to what you've just said,

His Majesty

will only have a year or two.

Even if I go into the palace,

it won't be any different.

Please, just go take a look.

We'll figure it out together.

There's gotta be a way...

Diligu.

One has to go when his time comes.

You're a doctor as well,

you should know,

doctors can't cure the incurable.

Today, I saw His Majesty

in so much pain,

I couldn't stand it,

so I gave him the anesthetic.

But His Majesty didn't care.

I fear

even His Majesty himself

is giving up.

His Majesty has suffered through his whole life.

And now he's troubled by the pain.

If anesthetic could ease his suffering,

you did what you have to.

It's all my fault.

I'm too useless.

I felt the same,

just like you.

But we

can only save those that Tengri wants us to save.

Your Majesty, it's getting windy.

Let's return to the palace and take some rest.

Too much wind is not good for you right now.

Po.

Look at those two flowers.

They look quite like

the Queen and me.

One in bloom.

And the other

is at its doom.

Your Majesty, you are only in your 30s.

You're in the prime of your life.

There's been some unrest at the border.

The fight over cities

has been going on forever.

It'll never stop.

I need to stay here

in case something happens at the border.

I'm afraid you have to go by yourself for the hunting.

Yanyan.

The whole country

is now on your shoulder.

It must be tough for you.

We are husband and wife,

that's what we do for each other.

Go ahead.

I can handle it.

Good.

I know

I have a

very capable queen.

Come on.

Brother Dalin.

Brother Dalin.

Brother Dalin!

You have to help me.

Have some mercy on me.

I'm still a single man.

I...

What did you call me?

Brother Dalin.

Brother Dalin!

Master.

You got it wrong.

Think about it,

what does Miss Hailan call General Dalin?

Uncle Dalin.

Exactly.

Uncle!

Uncle Dalin!

Wait for me, Uncle Dalin!

Uncle Dalin, uncle.

My uncle is so sweet.

Uncle!

Don't ignore me.

I can be on my knees.

Enough. Just say it.

How do you want me to help you?

Well, here's the thing.

I just got back from the war.

Now I have to go hunting with His Majesty.

I know,

she got off on the wrong foot with me.

But it's not like I wanted it to be.

I only met her once.

She didn't even give me a chance to explain.

Isn't she your niece?

Can you put in a good word for me?

Put in a good word for you?

That I can do.

Thank you, Uncle Dalin.

But I'm gonna need to figure out something in you

that is decent.

At least

something that's worth put in a good word.

What?

Do you really have any?

I respect you with all my heart.

You can't play me like that!

You've done a lot of messed-up shit around here.

If you weren't after my niece,

you would never come to me like this.

I'm not decent?

I'm not decent?

I've done great things on the battlefield.

At my age,

who else can make it to South Court King

with only military tributes?

Tell me!

Come on.

Besides those military tributes,

you have nothing else that's decent.

Do you want me

to take all those shits you've done in Shangjing

to Hailan?

I remember

you were the No.1 playboy in Shangjing.

Uncle Dalin...

All the girls were around you.

No, no, no.

It was a magnificent scene.

I got headache.

I don't remember anything from the past.

Nothing at all.

Get up.

You're going to break my desk.

Go ahead.

What are you planning to do?

Seriously, Uncle Dalin,

I'm a hundred percent sincere

about this.

I want to make it on my own

for Hailan to like me first.

And then when I propose her,

you can put in a word or two for me

in front of Her Highness

and Lord Xiao Taogu.

Finally, you have shown some good faith.

Of course.

So what are you gonna do?

I would go to Her Highness,

ask her to make me Nanjing Governor

instead of the South Court King.

In that case, I could stay in Yuzhou.

I'll get to see her all the time.

So you're willing

to risk your whole life for Hailan?

Not only my life,

I can give her my whole heart.

Well, I'll be honest with you then.

Her Highness has summoned Hailan to Shangjing,

as her daughter's companion.

Really?

Great!

God bless me!

Why didn't you tell me this earlier?

I called you uncle so many times.

I beg your pardon?

Thank you, Uncle Dalin.

Get out of here.

I'm the elder of Xi Clan.

This year we brought 100 fine horses as our tributes.

On behalf of Gaoli,

we brought bearskins as our tributes.

As the leader of Bohai,

we present Your Majesty with 36 beautiful women.

On behalf of Nüzhen, I present you with gyrfalcons

and the east pearls.

We Shiwei Clan has brought Your Majesty

yews and bearskins.

It's only been a few steps,

but I'm already getting tired.

Your Majesty have been with the kings

on the hunts and feasts.

Your Majesty exhausted yourself.

You shouldn't have done that.

This hunting

is a rare gathering.

The Queen is not here.

I have to do my job, right?

Autumn Moon of the Han Palace?

Who would play

such a song here?

Chubu.

Yes.

You wait here.

Po, let's check it out.

Yuxiao, maiden devoted by Bohai

Who are you?

Why

are you here playing the song?

I remember

Bohai Clan has offered

36 beautiful women.

She should be one of them.

What's your name?

The song you just played,

I believe it's called Autumn Moon of the Han Palace.

But I can tell

there's a sense of sadness in your song.

Maybe because you miss your hometown.

I understand.

If you have been away from home for too long,

you will then want to come back home.

And I...

I've been on this prairie long enough.

I'd like to go somewhere with mountains and rivers.

By the way,

do you know how to play

Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water?

You know what,

give it to me, I'll give it a try.

Never mind.

Let's return to the court.

Your Majesty, are you all right?

What happened?

Master has had a long journey.

He's having a headache.

Miss, what are you...?

My father is a great doctor.

I know a thing or two from him.

Maybe I can help.

Are you feeling any better?

Thank you.

You seem to be in bad conditions.

Why would you come to hike?

Yes, Your Majesty.

Let's go back to court.

Your Majesty?

Your Majesty.

It's all right, you may rise.

Let's go.

Let's get back.

Your Majesty.

I have a suggestion.

Maybe we can take Miss Yuxiao back to the palace.

When you don't feel well,

Miss Yuxiao can ease your pain.

Go make the arrangements.

Yes.

Your Majesty.

Why don't I get Miss Yuxiao settled first?

Go ahead.

Please, Miss Yuxiao.

You can rest in here for now.

Let me know if you need anything.

OK.

Your Excellency.

I will serve His Majesty.

But I don't know what His Majesty likes.

Can you tell me about it?

It's very nice of you.

Well, I will walk you through then.

Amid the flowers, from a pot of wine,

I drink alone beneath the bright moonshine.

I raise my cup to invite the Moon who blends,

her light with my Shadow and we're three friends.

The Moon does not know how to drink her share;

In vain my Shadow follows me here and there.

Together with them for the time I stay,

And make merry before spring's spent away.

Your Highness, messenger from Lord Han's mansion

said Mrs. Han had a heartache.

She would like Lord Han to be back with her.

Well, if you excuse me.

How bad is her condition?

If it's needed,

I can send the imperial physician back with you.

I know a thing or two about medicine,

it's no big deal.

Besides,

I know my wife's problems.

No need to trouble your physician.

Seriously?

Every time when you ask Lord Han to stay for work,

Mrs. Han would send someone

to get him back.

What are the chances?

She happened to have heart attack every single time?

Well, that's pretty obvious.

Let it be, my conscience is clear.

Most effective medicine

Master.

This must be the doctor.

Yes.

How is she doing now?

Your Excellency, don't you worry.

With my medicine,

her ladyship will surely have a boy next year.

Doctor, please.

Guanyin Bodhisattva, please

let me have a baby soon.

Master.

Madam.

You're back.

Madam.

How many times have I told you,

why would you invite

those charlatans to our house?

All these years,

these charlatans,

they did nothing

but to scheme your money.

Look at you,

your condition is getting worse.

If we could have a baby,

I'll take all the pain in the world.

Madam.

If you and I are not destined to have a baby,

then maybe we should not force it.

Your health

is all that really matters.

Darling.

Take a concubine.

We have to pass down

the bloodline for your family.

I have many brothers.

They all have children.

Please don't mention

about this concubine thing ever again.

You refused to have a concubine.

Is this because of me?

Or her?

What's that supposed to mean?

If you don't love her,

and she doesn't love you,

then why you're the only one who have to stay

when everyone else has already left?

People come and go in the palace.

I consult with Her Highness on state matters.

Moreover,

Lord Shifang, Lord Xianshi will also be there from time to time.

What you're worried about is not real.

Darling.

I know.

I've been faking my condition to get you back here.

I know it embarrasses you.

You hate it.

But,

I didn't mean to do things like this.

I don't want to be like a small-minded,

ignorant woman.

Madam.

Say no more.

No, I want to continue.

I'm really scared.

You're pushing a new system

that undermines the clans.

Many of them will hold grudges against you.

You forgot

why you left Shangjing for Youzhou?

His Majesty will not tolerate

a man once betrothed his Queen.

He's always had a deep heart.

For what happened in the past,

he had never let go.

Now he needs you to do things for him,

he needs you to take the blame,

that's why he would bear you for now.

Every word you say to the Queen

is a stab in his heart.

In the future,

when you are no longer useful,

how can he let you live?

Back in Bohai,

do you have someone in mind?

If you do,

I can send someone to take you back there.

Your Majesty, please do not send me away.

That's not what I meant.

It's just that since you have someone you like,

you should go back and be with him.

I'll make it clear to the chief of Bohai Clan.

I'll say this is from me.

He won't give you a hard time.

Your Majesty.

Does this mean you don't want me around?

What are you doing?

Your Majesty.

Do you really not know?

What are you trying to say?

I just want to be there for you every day.

I want to be with you.

I want you to smile every day.

I want to take away your pain.

Thank you

for going through these memorials with me

the whole morning.

It is my duty.

It's part of my job.

Judging by the date,

His Majesty should be on his way back.

There's a lot of work

awaits him to decide.

By the way,

I heard Mrs. Han has been seeking treatments

for infertility.

Maybe I can send...

She'll be all right.

Thank you, Your Highness.

The heir is a matter of great importance.

If Mrs. Han needs it,

I can send the imperial physician there

to check her pulse.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Your Majesty, have some milk tea.

Do you have something to say?

Come sit down.

You're worried

that the Queen might have a problem with you and me?

Don't worry.

When we get back to Shangjing,

I'll talk to the Queen.

Your Majesty, you don't have to do this.

I just want to stay close

with Your Majesty.

Now you're with me.

I'll give you the title.

They say Her Highness is wise.

When late Emperor was in power,

the clans been appointed

would be punished with the slightest mistake.

And some other clans didn't have to pay tributes.

Now Her Highness is in charge.

There's no such unfairness again.

As for me, I know nothing.

But you can always be here for me.

Take good care of me.

What about Her Highness?

Her Highness...

She

is a gift from Tengri to our country.

I know,

you're a reasonable girl.

But I must remind you.

No matter where or when,

the Queen's position will always be secured.

Understand?

Yes, I do.
