Because when they decided

for her to be buried in La Recoleta,

the thought of an autopsy
didn't even cross their minds.

They were positive it was an accident.

Could it be that pain makes you
so stupid you don't notice?

DEC 2 - AUTOPSY

The autopsy performed on María Marta

determined there were
five lead bullets lodged in her skull

and that a sixth bullet
had bounced against her skull.

But they also found signs of struggle.

In the autopsy, María Marta's body

revealed marks consistent with a fight.

On her face, on her legs,
on one of her arms.

Upon touching her head,

they describe it as if it was empty,

because there were four bullet holes...

so close one to the other...

that a whole piece of skull was lost.

According to the investigators,
María Marta had been...

taken by surprise
by a very violent and swift attack,

which was also fueled by rage.

It was shocking, no doubt about it.

I was frozen.

I thought, "Damn, what a mess...

No one can bring María back to me,
I have nothing to do with it."

You know? Then your mind
starts running wild.

Horacio called me and said,
"There's something I need to tell you."

He said she was murdered and how.
That she had five bullets in her head...

And I couldn't believe it, to be honest.

I could never really mourn
María Marta's death.

Back then, we didn't imagine
what would come next.

I think the first one I called
was Molina Pico.

"Can you see, Horacio?
We bought the accident thing.

María Marta was killed.
What do we do now?"

MARÍA MARTA'S WIDOWER

I thought any extra years were too much.

In stock exchange, there are many things.

You can put money in, get money out,

you can buy stock, you can buy bonds.

If you want to do any of that,
you need an authorized broker.

Do stockbrokers make money?

I did well.

I was the top broker in sales volume...

in '92 and '93, if I'm not mistaken.

And I moved 11 vulture funds.

I didn't know they were vultures.

To me, they were canaries.

When I turned 50, in 1994,

the stock I bought for 100,000 dollars

was worth 2 million.

So, one night I get together
with María Marta

and say, "I'm not making enough commission

to keep the money invested,
it's not profitable anymore."

The next day, I went and sold it.

bought it from me, two million.

was murdered.

getting so much attention,
or being in the public eye,

at least in modern times.

It precipitated
the public's morbid fascination.

It was a case that kept me up
many nights.

I spent my time wondering

which witness was telling the truth,
which one lied,

what had really happened

that evening at María Marta's house.

ATTACKED AT HER DOORSTEP

You always think twice
about what you write, think, hear...

I am a lawyer. So, it's easy for me

to read a case file and analyze it.

And when I start reading it,

I'm dumbfounded.

And I'm shocked.

The case file

presented a completely different reality

to the one presented by the mass media.

PROSECUTION UNIT N°2 - PILAR, ARGENTINA

We went
from an inquiry into the cause of death,

PROSECUTOR

meaning, finding out why someone died,

to investigating a murder.

The story line changes
and so does what you're looking for.

When did it change? When the testimonies

didn't match the documentation.

DETAILS: HOMICIDE

OSDE Health Central.

It's about a patient's death
in the Pilar area.

-Yes.
-García Belsunce, María Marta.

-Yes.
-The...

The thing is, she had a fractured skull
and brain tissue loss.

Afterwards, just in case, when you have
to do the paperwork for the mortuary,

if there's any problem...

-Was she beaten to death?
-Look, I don't know.

I don't know. They're saying
nothing happened intentionally.

But, truth is, I don't...

Around María Marta's body,
according to Gauvry Gordon,

there was a big blood clot on the floor.

He says there were huge
blood clots in the bathtub as well.

He says the water in the tub
was completely red.

And he says, "This is a horrible scene.

I wouldn't like a family member of mine
to be seen like this. Let's clean up."

There are different versions
of what happened in the scene.

Gauvry Gordon says he had no doubt

that María Marta had suffered an accident.

SHE HAD FALLEN IN THE BATHTUB
DOMESTIC ACCIDENT

And Santiago Biasi
tells a whole different version.

Initially, he says

that she couldn't have had
an accident in the tub.

I SAID IT WAS A VIOLENT AND DUBIOUS DEATH

And that's why he says
he's surprised that Gauvry Gordon

and the masseuse cleaned the blood.

Because, to him, that was a crime scene

and shouldn't be altered
before the investigators got there.

SHE STARTED CLEANING WITH BLEACH

The cleaning of the crime scene
is no minor detail.

Because they were...

tampering with it
to make it look like nothing happened.

Biasi says that he told Gauvry Gordon,

"Look, this death looks shady,

there should be a police investigation.

I won't sign the death certificate

because forensics are needed here."

So, the cause of death is suspicious?

I mean, it's not suspicious, but...

Are you calling the cops?
How will you handle it?

No. I'll pronounce her dead
and see how they handle it.

They were very close
with María Marta, they loved her dearly.

They ask who'll go find

a mortuary open on a Sunday night

that will issue a death certificate.

To that Bártoli says, "I'll go."
Michael Taylor says, "I'll go with you."

They went to a funeral home in Pilar,
Ponce de León,

and they try to arrange
María Marta's burial.

There was a problem there.

The funeral home
didn't want to sign the death certificate

without first examining the body.
So, they had to go elsewhere.

Then, Michael says, "Let's go
to the capital, we have no choice."

DISTANCE TRAVELED

And he knew
the famous Casa Sierra mortuary.

They arrive to Casa Sierra.

First thing they ask is,
"Do you provide a full service?

Do you issue death certificates?"

"Yes, of course,
we issue death certificates."

The problem was that the information
on this death certificate was all false.

Instead of saying María Marta
had died at Pilar Carmel Country Club,

it said María Marta had died
in an apartment in Recoleta,

in Buenos Aires City.

The cause of death read
"non traumatic cardiac arrest."

As if María Marta had had a heart attack

and not an accident,
let alone been murdered.

We were able to reconstruct
the actions taken during the night

and moments after the homicide,

especially that they had interfered
with the arrival of the police.

Even instructions were given

to the president of Carmel
to go to the main gate

to stop the police from getting in.

And if a bribe was needed,
he was to bribe them.

It was like playing a game of telephone.

MARÍA MARTA'S BROTHER

The guard at Martinica,
a community around the corner,

sees a police patrol go by

and warns his colleague at Carmel,

"Look out, the police are on their way."

This police car
was heading somewhere else.

Or was just patrolling around
as patrols do.

What does the guard think?

"Two ambulances went in.

They're clearly heading
for the Carrascosa's.

What will we do when the police arrives?"

They notify the community president.

The community president
calls María Marta's house

and warns them that the police

is coming to their house
to see what happened.

According to the criminal investigation,

a neighbor of Carlos Carrascosa,
who's also a close friend,

talks to the community president,
Alberto White,

asking him to stop the police
from entering Carmel Country Club.

That's when he told me,
"No, the police can't...

CARMEL'S FORMER PRESIDENT

It can't come in.

If you need to bribe them, do it."

"If it comes to it, give them some money,
pay them, bribe them,

just don't let the police in."

All through the night of the wake,

among the different people in attendance,

rumors circulated
about the existence of a "shard"...

a "casing." They never said "bullet."

And that projectile

was flushed

down the toilet.

If I saw a bullet and went,
"This is a bullet.

Okay, great. María Marta was killed.
Let's flush it down," and do so,

I wouldn't go to the prosecutor
12 days later saying I flushed a "thingy."

OCT 27, 2002 - MARÍA MARTA'S MURDER
DEC 2 - AUTOPSY

In the case file,

the first one to talk about the "thingy"
with the authorities is Horacio.

Before the autopsy and all that,
on November 12th. A little while later...

he takes John's testimony,
and John speaks of it.

And John even draws a picture of it.

I spoke of it and drew a picture
for the prosecutor.

I thought bullets
couldn't lose their shape.

Frankly, I never thought
it was a bullet... so, I flushed it.

I second guessed it,
and the first thing I said was,

MARÍA MARTA'S BROTHER

"What if we threw away something
important for the investigation?"

And later, when we found out,

when the autopsy reveals
that it hadn't been an accident,

that's when we told Molina Pico,

"Do whatever it takes,
but find that little piece of metal."

"I'll destroy the bathroom."

"Destroy the bathroom,
the house, wreck the place."

FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHS - 2002

Since that bathroom led to a septic tank,

because there was no sewage in Carmel,

one day, Prosecutor Molina Pico said,
"Let's go look for the 'thingy.'"

Molina Pico calls me and goes,
"Can we go look for the 'thingy'?"

And I say, "Yes, sure."

Nine hours searching among shit.

I knew it was there.
I knew it led to that tank.

I started searching, they let me.

One of the investigators
swept a metal detector.

Over the last bucket, the alarm goes off,

and he finds the projectile.

I touched something, picked it up,

went to the sink, cleaned it, and said,

"I got it! Guys, we found it!"

During that search for the 'thingy,'

family members were present.

Nothing was done behind their back.

I did it on purpose.

What matters is...

we did find it in the septic tank...

and the fact that this projectile...

was the exact same caliber...

and was fired by the same weapon
as the other five projectiles.

The ballistics expert confirmed
that it was the tip of a deformed bullet,

that hit against something.

This was important

because the projectiles
that were found were crushed.

Never in my life
as a ballistics expert have I seen...

BALLISTICS EXPERT

something so deformed.

The only bullet that could tell us

the caliber and the gun, was the "thingy."

Because the ones in María's head
were too buff.

The gun was not found,
it couldn't be compared.

All we know is it was a .32 caliber long.

With metal detectors,

the investigators
look for the homicide weapon

in a ditch adjacent
to the García Belsunces' chalet.

They think the murderer
could've left the .32 caliber behind

while escaping the crime scene.

They wanted to dredge it
and even brought technical divers,

but the ditch was practically dry

and consequently,
the operation was thwarted.

The investigators ask my authorization

to use what's now known by everyone,

but at that time was brand new, luminol.

It's a chemical reagent

FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHS

that has the ability to expose

biological traces.

In this case, blood.

The luminol was applied with a spray.

The lights were turned off,
and automatically...

it revealed what was hidden on the walls.

What impressed me the most

was the dragging
of four fingers on the wall.

What the Trace Division did

was draw a circle over the stain
and then cut a piece with a cutter

and extract the whole paint block

to proceed to analyze it.

These are very important
because they were positive.

These three stains.

They turned out positive.

We start with a stain,
biological material,

GENETICS EXPERT

but we need to run DNA tests. And the DNA
has to be of sufficient quantity

for me to see a profile.

Then I can compare it
with what we call "a person of interest."

The forensic scientists examining the DNA

have confirmed that genetic patterns
found at the crime scene

belong to one woman and two men,

one being a blood relative
of María Marta's.

There are three DNAs.
One complete female profile,

a male profile
mixed with María Marta's blood.

Always referring to the place
where the events took place.

Pepe Scelzi, who at the time was
the lawyer that represented all of us,

tells me, "Careful, Molina Pico...

is deviating the investigation.

He believes you are responsible

and will call you for questioning."

"What?

Molina Pico will call me for questioning?

I'll smash his head open.

He's gone crazy."

"I'm warning you,
it will happen." And it did.

Headline news.

Belsunce: the family?

Suspicion grows
around María Marta's murder.

Now, her family is being investigated.

DEC 2, 2002 - AUTOPSY

JAN 15, 2003 - SUBPOENA FOR COVER-UP

When I believe
I have enough elements of proof,

I call them for questioning
under suspicion of cover-up.

He connects the dots.

The calls for the police
not to enter the country club,

the fake death certificate,

finding a piece of lead, the "thingy,"

and flushing it down the toilet,

cleaning up the crime scene.

Everything that happened after her murder,
for it is all connected.

Meaning, you can get...

to the bottom of a homicide
through the cover-up.

The prosecutor has also
taken into consideration

some new revealing testimonies.

Carrascosa's alibi had always been

that, at the time of María Marta's crime,

he had been at Guillermo Bártoli's house,
his brother-in-law.

Boca vs. River was over,

and Bártoli tells
he stayed with Carrascosa

watching the next game,
Independiente vs. Rosario Central.

They say, "We watched it
until Independiente scored,

and that's when Carrascosa
decided to go home."

But testimonies of employees
of Carmel's clubhouse

say that, once Boca vs. River was over

and before the time
he said he found María Marta,

Carrascosa had been elsewhere,

which he never confessed to,

which was precisely Carmel's club house.

That made Carrascosa's alibi fall apart

because he always denied being
at that place at that time that evening.

IRENE AND GUILLERMO

What exactly did the prosecutor
have on Carrascosa?

A timeline.

And that timeline was proof

that when María Marta got home
from her tennis match,

Carrascosa,
along with at least two other people...

we believe a man and a woman,
were inside the house already.

And that was when the crime took place.

I was at...

our lawyer at the time, at Scelzi's.

And then I watch on TV that there was
an arrest warrant against me.

Prosecutor Molina Pico
ordered Carlos Carrascosa's arrest

charged with aggravated murder.

CARRASCOSA ACCUSED

So, then I call my friend,

a neighbor of mine in Escobar...

back where I lived, and ask him.

He goes, "Yes, I'm here, with Molina Pico,
who's here to arrest you."

"Okay, tell him I'll be there in a while."

I get in my van and drive from San Isidro
to Escobar to turn myself in.

My friend, it was very nice of him...

knew I might be needing a whiskey.

So, he put...

a glass with ice...

filled to the top with whiskey.

And so, while they went on
with the due diligence,

the arrest, the witnesses, all that stuff.

By then,
there were 273 journalists at the door.

They were everywhere, you'd stumble
on the cables, it was all a mess.

The decision to incarcerate Carrascosa
falls on Magistrate Diego Barroetaveña.

JUSTICE WILL DETERMINE TODAY
IF CARRASCOSA GETS PREVENTIVE PRISON

The magistrate had to...

rule preventive custody or not.

He tells me, "Carrascosa, have a seat.

I was wrong about you."

"How come?"

"My father was a criminal court judge
and was always my idol.

I confirmed your preventive custody,

got home, sat by the piano,
where I have my father's picture...

and the glass cracked.

It was a warning my father gave me."

"Well, what now?"

"Wait a few days, we'll fix this."

CARRASCOSA RELEASED

Carlos Carrascosa
looks more relaxed, doesn't he?

He looks different.

Prosecutor Diego Molina Pico
gathered enough evidence

to determine
the involvement of Carlos Carrascosa.

But Magistrate Barroetaveña
still isn't sure

and wants to follow
other lines of investigation.

a computer had been stolen.

And, in this case, all the roads led,
not to Rome, but to Pachelo.

I told you, María Marta was very reserved.

Nonetheless,
one of the few things she told me

and only because I asked,
"You seem worried, is something going on?"

That's when she tells me
about the dog, about Tom.

Her dog had been stolen,

and she was sure
that Pachelo had done it.

My dog Tom went missing.

A little later,
they asked ransom for the dog.

And María Marta said,
"Listen, this thief called me

to ask for ransom for Tom.

MARÍA MARTA'S FRIEND

I won't pay ransom for a dog,
because next time...

they'll take Carlos
and demand ransom for Carlos!

She was seen by the neighbors

at the crime scene with the mourners.

She left, and no one knew who she was.

according to the Belsunce family,

of María Marta García Belsunce's death.

Honestly, if what these people wanted

was to bring me down,

or put me in jail, trust me...

I swear, this is way worse
than a lifetime in jail.

Because my mother was a good woman.

I think she was going to be called
for questioning

the following day.

Because she ultimately provides an alibi

to her son because they were together
at Paseo Alcorta mall.

This is disrespectful!

In silence, with his head down
and surrounded by family and friends,

Nicolás Pachelo, says goodbye
to his mother, Silvia Ryan,

buried this morning

with Missing Children,

was worth investigating.

that she did at Missing Children,
looking for kids.

I never saw a dangerous side to it.

But I do know it did worry Carlos.

I get the social aspect of it
and all that, great.

But she was on another level... dangerous.

They would give out their phone numbers,
go on camera.

They'd stage protests at the Obelisk
with pictures of the missing kids.

They'd deal with prosecutors,
border police, the military.

It wasn't a job for a woman.

That's why it was what we first thought of

when we heard
about the bullets in her head.

The more a kid's photo is seen,

the easier it is to find him.

She was in contact with journalists.

She was spreading, at all times,

information about missing kids
or kids that were found,

along with Susan Murray,
a friend of María Marta's

and President
of Missing Children Argentina.

Why had Carrascosa,

together with two family members
or acquaintances, killed María Marta?

The prosecutor
zealously formulated a theory

way before the trial.

THE NARCO-WIDOWER?

For the prosecutor,
they killed her for reasons

tied to money laundering
and drug cartels.

The García Belsunce clan

is like Don Corleone's mafia.

They were all benefited with money

that allegedly
came from a Mexican drug cartel,

the Juárez cartel.

The Mexican Juarez cartel
controls the entry to the USA

of 50% of the cocaine consumed there.

To the DEA, it's one of the most powerful
criminal organizations they're after.

There is evidence
of the García Belsunce case

leading to the Juárez cartel.

The connection would be
Nora Burgues Taylor's sister.

The case file mentions
a sister of Nora Burgues Taylor,

"Pichi" to her friends,
including María Marta García Belsunce.

Nora Taylor's sister
seems to be the front for the businesses

that the Juarez cartel
carries out in Argentina.

This intel got to
the Banco General de Negocios,

owned by the Rohm brothers,

with whom Carlos Carrascosa
had been associated for years.

Molina Pico, theorized
as a possible explanation

that someone in the family used,

unbeknownst to her,
the accounts of the charities

María Marta García Belsunce worked for

to launder money.

She might have discovered
those transactions.

And she probably threatened
to go to the authorities.

And so, someone decided to kill her.

What's more, Molina Pico
adds that Carlos Carrascosa

had been present
while the crime was committed

and then staged the crime scene himself.

He made these claims

as he asked that the case

Carlos had to go to trial.
