The Legend of Xiao Chuo

Episode 19

Father.

I dare not.

But Yanyan is the love of my life.

I can't live without her.

Father.

What should I do?

Derang

Come on up.

I know how hard it must be for you.

You and Yanyan

can die for each other.

This is the true love

we rarely see in this world.

But to die is not the most difficult thing to do.

We have to live

to see the hope.

If you die,

you won't see anything.

Though you can't be with each other,

you might not even see each other again,

but if you can add to each other's achievements,

maybe you can still watch each other from afar.

This is another kind of happiness.

Derang.

I know,

you love Yanyan more than your life.

But you have to focus on the future.

I believe Yanyan

would want you

to pull yourself together.

You would love to see Yanyan

live well, right?

Then that's enough.

Miss, just have some.

You will hurt yourself

if you keep doing this.

No.

Miss.

Brother Derang

had been injured like that,

if he can't make it,

either would I.

If you feed me,

I will spit it out.

No one can force me

to do anything.

I'm not trying to force you.

No one's going to do that.

Look at yourself.

Do you think Derang would want to see you like this?

He will come to see you tonight.

Really?

Have something to eat.

You don't want Derang

to see you so haggard,

right?

I'll leave you to it.

Am I being too cruel?

Princess, please don't say that.

You are doing it for their own good.

Rather than

getting both of them destroyed,

it's better

to end it right now.

Master, I'll wait for you outside.

Brother Derang.

Brother Derang!

I thought I'd never see you again.

Are you all right?

I'm fine.

How are you?

I'm good.

Don't worry about me.

That's good.

I can't be fine without you.

I'm so scared.

I can't even sleep these days.

Once I close my eyes,

I would see you

come to say goodbye with blood all over you.

It hurts me so much

to see you like this.

We should have died together

back in that day on Yanyun Terrace.

Don't be silly.

Aren't we all good

and alive now?

Yanyan.

I can only see you

when I am

still alive.

Yanyan, I got you into this mess.

No, I wanted to.

Father said

it's my destiny to be the Empress.

Everyone told me to accept it.

Isn't that ridiculous?

Brother Derang.

If only death

can bring us two

together,

then let's be husband and wife in the next life.

I'll put on my wedding gown and die with you

when they come for me.

Don't be silly.

Yanyan.

You are still young.

There are so many possibilities

waiting ahead of you.

You have to know,

I might not be able to be with you,

but at least

we had this love of a lifetime.

I just want to be with you.

Nothing would ever be beautiful without you by my side.

I want to grow old with you.

I want to be with you till our hair turns grey.

Yanyan.

I failed you.

When the late Emperor was in power,

everyone lived in the fear

that they might die any moment.

It was me,

I was the one who's determined to help the now Emperor ascend the throne.

I thought I was doing the right thing.

Who could have thought

this would lead to the destruction of our marriage.

It's not your fault.

Yanyan.

If the two of us

are doomed to be apart,

then let me watch you from a distance.

Let me guard you.

If I can hear the news about you,

even we can't be together,

as long as our hearts

remember each other,

our love will never fate away.

I just want to be with you.

I'm going to be with you.

Besides you,

I don't want to marry anyone.

Yanyan,

we don't live only for our love.

We have to be responsible for our families.

Tengri has taken away

our love.

We can't let her take everything.

That's why we have to live braver,

and stronger.

Alright.

I promise you, brother Derang.

I will live a good life.

This is for you.

One for each one of us.

Wherever we are, whenever we are,

when the bell rings,

that means I miss you.

The bell is ringing,

who is now missing me from afar?

It sounds nice.

You asked me

to give you a name in Han.

I'll give it to you now.

Chuo.

What does it mean?

In The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, it went: *A poem by Bai Juyi

Of rainbow colours where rose magnificent bowers,

and dwelt so many fairies as graceful as flowers.

Yanyan,

you are that graceful

fairy.

Truly rare in the world.

I know that poem.

On high, we'd be two lovebirds flying wing to wing.

On earth, two trees with branches twined from spring to spring.

The boundless sky and endless earth may pass away,

but this vow unfulfilled will be regretted for aye.

You haven't eaten for days.

I brought you,

your favorite

mugwort cake when you were young.

I remember when you were a kid,

you always said you had stomachache,

then you got better after you had the mugwort cake.

I was wondering,

then I found out,

you wanted to have the mugwort cake,

that's why you said you had stomachache.

I know

you hold a grudge in your heart.

There's also hatred.

You are willing to sacrifice yourself

to resist the edict.

That's good.

That's my girl.

You have only Han Derang in your heart now.

You don't think about yourself,

let alone your clan and families.

If you're just

an ordinary girl,

you can be the slave of love if you want.

But my kid, you have to know,

as descendants from the queen family,

ever since you were born,

you have to take on greater responsibilities.

His Majesty is an Emperor who'll revitalize our country.

You are wanted by him.

For our family,

this is our responsibility.

It's also our destiny.

Kid,

you have no other choices.

Soon,

you're about to get married.

Those past of youth,

just bury them in your heart.

to brother Derang.

Yes.

(King Yan's mansion)

What kind of ridiculous thing is this?

How do you know

it would be ridiculous?

I have to give it a try.

A real man should not be tied up by love.

I'll go talk to him.

As a man,

he should put the country first on all occasions.

How can you be a father like this?

You son

is dying of heartbreak!

You're going to reason with him with that bullshit?

Want to crush him in the name of the country?

Even he's a saint,

he won't ever listen to you.

Si.

I'm looking forward to you.

Hello, Aunt Han.

Come,

come on in.

How's brother Han doing?

You'll see when you get in.

(King Yan's mansion)

How Derang looks right now

really worries me.

Si.

Go talk to him.

Aunt Han.

He doesn't need my comfort.

I'm afraid

I don't have the ability to comfort him.

I have to leave now.

I'll come see brother Han in some other time.

Si.

Si!

Miss,

don't you like Childe Han anymore?

He's now heart-broken.

It's a great opportunity for you.

Yeah,

miss.

Miss Yanyan has to go into the palace.

Right now,

he is at the moment of heartbreaking.

If I take this advantage to get to him,

it'll only make him look down on me.

Then I won't ever win his heart again

throughout my whole life.

I just have to wait.

Wait for him to pull himself together.

I will then appear in front of him.

Take a look at the gadgets.

Derang.

Do you really have to leave?

His Majesty

doesn't want you to go.

He is, after all, the Emperor of Liao.

He's the leader of our country.

He condescended himself

to beg on you again and again,

it's not easy for him.

The lord I served

took away the woman I love.

The one I saw as brother,

betrayed our promise.

Father.

How do you think I should treat him?

How can I ever trust him again?

How can I serve him?

Even if I would,

what about him?

The suspicions he holds,

will they disappear

with my submission?

On the contrary,

he is guilty in his heart.

His suspicions will only accumulate over time.

He won't ever let go.

Among all my sons,

you're the smartest one.

It's just that

if you see everything too clear,

eventually

you'll have nowhere to go.

I understand

what you want.

Our family needs an Emperor

to complete the national integration.

You need a dynasty

to promote the Han system.

You want the people from Sixteen Prefectures

to enjoy permanent peace.

But father,

for a man who betrayed his friendship,

how can you guarantee

he won't break the promises with his subjects.

Our family has gone all-in

to promote the Han system.

But what about him?

He could

pull back anytime

for his own safety.

Father,

do you remember

the death of Emperor Shizong?

What do you mean by that?

The carry-out of The Han system

will centralize the power to the Emperor and benefit the regular people.

But what about the royals who are in charge now?

The nobles and the tribes?

What would they react to this?

If you piss them off,

they even dare to murder the Emperor.

Father,

all reforms in the history

came with blood.

Mingyi will not let himself

be the one to take the hit.

Derang, mind your words.

A gentleman can die for his bosom friend.

When I was his follower,

I had no fear for death.

But now he is no long

the Emperor

who I can trust with my life.

Father,

what you want to do,

I will do it for you.

I will continue,

for this is

the responsibility of our family.

However,

the emperor can always give out his comments, but it's up to me to choose whether to obey him.

Where can you go?

Anywhere.

Anywhere but Shangjing.

If I want to change the world,

first I have to see the world.

I have to know how people really live in this world.

What do them live for?

What do they want?

Now that

you've made up your mind,

take good care of yourself.

Forgive me

for being unfilial.

Even a fierce horse like Cloud Snow

becomes gentle

when it's with you.

Is that a compliment?

Or are you saying I'm heartless?

I have a lot

to worry about every day.

I wish I can be

as bright

as Empress Dowager Shulü.

She somehow managed to make the right decisions

every time

at the most critical moments.

Yanyan.

Thank you.

What for?

Thank you for letting me

have a whole new perspective on you.

My son.

In the mood of drinking?

I'll drink with you.

Come.

Great wine.

You may leave now.

My son,

I know

Yanyan and you

are in love with each other.

You fought for her.

She bled for you.

That's what really matters.

You didn't fail her.

Neither did you fail yourself.

Now she's getting married,

you should live your life as well.

But to live,

you'll have to live like a man.

My precious son,

you can't be like this all day.

There are nothing you can't overcome in life.

What's more, you still have dad and mom.

You have

all your brothers and sisters.

Derang,

let's have a good drink together today.

But you have to promise me,

when you wake up tomorrow in the morning,

you have to forget

all about the past.

You have to start over.

Now that's my boy.

Come,

I'll drink with you.

Let the wine take away your sorrow.
