The Legend of Xiao Chuo

Episode 2

Xiao's Mansion

Yanyan.

What did Han Derang

say to you?

He told me

If anyone asks,

just say

he's here for the horse money.

He said it's good for both me

and our family.

Did he say anything else?

No.

By the way, father,

you mentioned Mount Xianggu just now.

What happened

in Mount Xianggu?

Don't ask

about things you should not know.

If you insist not telling me,

I'll have to guess then.

It must

be about my origin.

Or

about mother.

I told you

not to make wild guesses!

What's wrong, Yanyan?

You go against father again?

If you don't want me

to ask about Mount Xianggu,

I won't then.

One more thing.

The archery game is coming.

I have to be in it.

If you keep behaving like this,

you will be nowhere but home.

You're not going anywhere.

All right, all right.

Enough. Bring her out.

Father is mad at you.

-I don't care, father! -Let's go.

-Let's go. -You promised!

You said you would take me!

You promised me everything!

Father!

Father,

please don't be angry with Yanyan.

Would you bring in some tea?

Yes, young lady.

So he

was entrusted by King Mingyi

to sound you out.

What do you think of this then?

I have the well-being of the people at one hand.

And our own lives and deaths on the other if we commit rebellion.

It's hard for me to make up my mind.

His Majesty can be quite suspicious.

If our family gets involved

with the three branches of Emperor Taizu,

even the slightest mistake

will lead to

the total extermination of our family.

Yeah.

Even since I became Prime Minister,

I knew that from that moment on,

this sword would constantly

be over our heads.

Compared with the stability of Liao,

our Xiao family is indeed insignificant.

Hunian.

You've known Han Derang since you were a child.

Find a chance to give him the jade pendant.

And let him know,

I would like

to meet with its owner.

OK.

Archery competition outside Shangjing City

Look, it's about to start!

I heard that

brother Dalin from our clan,

Yelü Zhimo, third son of Emporor Shizong King Zhimo of Ren Huangwang,

Yelü Xiuge of Zhongfu.

Xiyin of Lihu,

Yelü Dilie, brother of Emperor Muzong and His Majesty's brother

King Dilie

all made it to the final this time.

And that

Molugu

who's been bullied by Yanyan.

I see

he should really work harder today.

So that Yanyan

might see him differently.

He's only a waste of the entry.

He should

let me have the chance to compete.

If he could be here,

that will be great.

What did you say to yourself?

Who is that he?

Don't even have to ask.

Definitely

someone from the three branches of Emperor Taizu.

We are from the empress' family.

We are destined to marry to the royal family.

That one, that...

isn't that Han...

Han Derang?

Didn't expect him to make it to the finals.

Even he's good, he's still a liar.

He is not a liar.

He has already returned the money to me.

And

he gave me

Cloud Snow!

Why are you

defending him right now?

Xiao Yanyan.

you are not into him, are you?

Don't talk nonsense!

Stop it. Stop it.

Sister, look at her!

Imma say what I want.

Brother Dalin.

You're here, too.

Are you here to cheer me up?

Brother Dalin,

make sure you get

the commander title for our clan.

Of course.

You just watch me win.

Don't you have

any worthy rivals?

That is one.

Xiuge of Zhongfu.

Good at horse-riding and archery.

Absolutely a strong opponent.

And that Han Derang.

We used to hang out

when we were kids.

But I don't know now.

He's been in Youzhou for the past few years.

I wonder if he improved.

He might be

even better than Xiuge.

I will leave for now.

Wait for my good news.

It seems that he is really good.

What are you looking at?

Nothing.

Where

is that Molugu?

Yelü Jing, Emperor Muzong

Yelü Yansage King Taiping, brother of Emperor Muzong

I heard Mingyi fainted again this morning.

It's true.

I paid him a visit.

-Do you want... -I see.

He can stay at home today

for his condition.

I will go see him

after the game.

Who's in the finals?

List of the final contestants

Xiyin?

Brother.

Don't need to worry about the Lihu family.

Imperial Uncle is getting old.

This Xiyin

is nothing

but a lousy loser.

Don't take it lightly.

No worries.

I'll keep an eye on them.

Look, sister.

Isn't that King Xiyin

of Imperial Uncle?

He is such a valiant.

Yeah.

Of course, he is.

I say

brother Dalin might be wrong.

The winner

could have been King Xiyin.

Where's Yanyan?

I don't know.

Yeah.

Why didn't you keep an eye on her?

Me? I...

How am I supposed to do that?

Didn't she go find Molugu?

The game is about to start.

Where have they been?

There it goes.

Yelü Xiuge

Coming.

Look at his swag.

Yelü Dilie

Yelü Zhimo

Xiao Dalin

Look over there!

Yeah.

Yelü Xiyin

Han Derang

The seven willow branches

represent the seven of you.

Each participant

has to aim at the branch

with the same color of your outfit.

The one who can obtain the branch before it reaches the ground wins.

Isn't it too difficult?

This is hard!

Yeah.

The champion

addition to being the lead of the royal troops,

can receive a blade from His Majesty himself.

Great!

Where's Molugu?

Great!

Yelü Molugu

Yanyan?

What is she doing there?

I...

Gosh.

Why are you here?

Brother.

Don't know why

but a girl

showed up with the sign

of Molugu.

Should we take her down?

No.

I have never seen

a girl

in the archery game before.

Interesting.

Look!

Yelü Dilie fell from his horse.

He's out.

My horse!

Who came up with

dirty moves like this?

Messed with my saddle.

Yelü Zhimo,

Yelü Xiuge, fell off the horse.

They are now out.

Brother Dalin!

Sister.

Xiao Dalin also fell.

He is now out.

Yelü Xiyin fell from his horse.

He's out.

What happened to the horse?

That's close.

Hooray!

Winner of the archery game, Han Derang.

Very impressive.

Indeed.

Hooray!

Hooray!

Hooray!

Splendid twists.

Marvelous.

Pass down my word.

I want to wear that blade on the winner myself.

His Majesty requests for Han Derang's presence.

You should leave now.

If someone hadn't cheated,

I should have been the winner.

Deceiving the Emperor is a great sin. Go!

I'm just not convinced!

Let that Khitan woman

come as well.

Deceiving the Emperor is a crime.

Wuguli, keep an eye on her.

I'm going to get father.

Where are you going, sister?

I'm going to save Yanyan.

Sister.

His Majesty didn't say

he's going to lock Yanyan up.

His Majesty has a changing temperament.

Who knows

what will happen later?

How can I

just sit here and watch?

Sister, we can go later.

Let's sit on it first.

Your Majesty.

You may rise now.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

From now on,

you will be

the right commander of Liao's royal clan troops.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Yelü Molugu

You are Molugu?

Assassins!

We have assassins here!

He said we have assassins!

Assassin coming. Protect His Majesty!

Protect His Majesty!

There are assassins!

There's an assassin. Come on!

His Majesty, assassins!

His Majesty, assassins!

Assassins!

Come on!

His Majesty.

The assassin took my token.

Hold it there.

She's not the assassin.

She is my youngest daughter.

Xiao Yanyan.

I didn't raise her well.

Your Majesty, please lay your punishment on me.

Your Majesty, it has nothing to do with father.

I didn't take good care of my sister.

I'm willing to take the fall

for my sister.

Your Majesty, may you have the mercy.

Your Majesty, we beg for your mercy.

Your Majesty.

This is the doing of mine alone.

Nothing to do with anyone else.

I knocked Molugu out

I took

his token.

I deceived Your Majesty.

I'm willing to take the fall.

But all I did

was for the sake of Liao.

I did it for Your Majesty.

Shut up!

Let her finish.

Empress Dowager Shulü said,

as the children of Liao

we must always concern for the well-being of Liao.

What I did today

is not to show off,

nor to cause panic or trouble of any kind.

I just want to prove it to father,

to Your Majesty

that even as a female,

I can also lead the army and fight.

Though

I didn't get the first place today.

It didn't work out.

But next time

I'll still be here,

until I claim my victory.

Then

I can serve my country

and Your Majesty.

As for what happened today,

I'll take all of the responsibility.

Your Majesty, please lay your punishment on me.

Stand up.

Come on.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Very much alike.

You are just like her.

You look exactly the same

as the First Princess back in the day.

Only she

can have

a daughter like this.

I like you.

Come.

Give her some wine.

Miss Hunian.

You may rise now.

Imperial Hall

Who is it

plotting against me?

Who's here to assassin me?

Who?

Who's here to kill me?

Who's to kill me?

Come.

Get him out of here.

Yes, Your Excellency.

Brother, take it easy.

Don't hurt yourself.

Yansage.

Keep in mind.

Those who gather together for no reason.

Kill them all.

Yes, Your Majesty.

I knew you could do it.

Now

I am the commander royal clan troops,

it'll be much easier for us in the future.

All the young generations of the clans

are in there.

If we can do...

Your Majesty, welcome!

Your Majesty is here.

Imperial Uncle.

It's been quite long

since my last visit here.

Mingyi.

The royal clans and the family of empress,

do they have any suspicious move lately?

I'm not sure what Your Majesty mean.

The Spring Hunting is about to begin.

I will be expelled

from protection of the palace walls.

To those

who want to harm me,

this should be

a great opportunity.

Your Majesty is blessed and supported by the people.

Your Majesty need not worry about this.

Mingyi.

You are of the three branches of Emperor Taizu.

Do you want to kill me

and take my place?

I have no such intention.

Your Majesty ended the rebellion of Chage.

You raised us orphans

of the late emperor as your own.

I will always remember your kindness.

Never would I forget.

I, Yelü Jing,

take oath in front of our ancestors,

I will protect Second Prince Mingyi

till the day I die.

I'll take Zhimo and Hugudian as my own.

I will raise them.

If I break the oath,

let me have my violent end.

Mingyi.

I'm just joking with you.

Don't take it that serious.

I know you are loyal.

And to those

who want to take my throne,

they can bring it on.

I turned the table.

18 years later,

I still fear no one.

Mingyi.

Why do you always have to read

these books from the South.

Come sit down.

Liao rules on bows and horses since the past.

Back in the day,

the late emperor insisted on the Han system

led to the rebellion.

You were just a kid

when Emperor Shizong died.

I adopted you.

I have no children.

The throne of this great Liao Dynasty

will land on you sooner or later.

I dare not have such wish.

I spend four or five months a year in bed

due to my conditions.

Now I only have one wish.

I'm more than happy

to live for just a few more years.

Don't talk like that at such a young age.

It's so sad

for us to hear that from you.

His Majesty knows

that you fainted several times lately.

He brought you some decoction.

Thank you for your concern.

It's just that I've been taking this for years.

The condition never improve.

I assume

I'm destined to have this condition.

Don't talk silly.

Drink it.

Brother, don't you forget

the three of us

owe our lives to His Majesty.

You have to

remember His Majesty's kindness.

If you dare to be disrespectful to His Majesty,

I, Zhimo,

will be the first one to hunt you down.

You see how considerate Zhimo is?

Mingyi.

you don't want to drink it?

Your Excellency,

King Taiping

added some tonics to this decoction.

You should take it.

There we go.

Kuangsi.

All these years,

thanks to your care,

Mingyi

is getting better.

You did a great job.

Now say it.

What kind of reward you want in return?

Your Majesty.

I don't want anything.

All I want is to take good care of Your Majesty,

King Taiping

and King Mingyi.

That's all I ever wanted.

All right, all right.

This year's Spring Hunting,

you will be in charge.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Mingyi.

This year's Spring Hunting.

Since you're not feeling well,

you can stay in the palace.

Your Majesty.

The palace has been cold and dark these days.

King Mingyi fears the cold.

Taking some exercises outside

might be good for his health.

OK.

So

you won't overthink things

in this palace alone.

Who is that?

Who is it?

Who is it?

Dad.

Dad.

Your Excellency.

What's going on?

Your Majesty.

It was the wind, blew open the window.

Mingyi.

What is that you took?

Before

it kicks in,

spit it out, now!

Brother Han,

relax.

Your father's here.

I'm fine.

Mr. Han saved my life

back in Mount Xianggu.

The kindness from

both you and your father,

I can't repay you guys.

It's been hard on you all these years.

But why is Zhimo

treating you like that?

Isn't him son of the late emperor

and Empress Zhen's?

His Majesty is very moody

and unpredictable.

I couldn't tell Zhimo the truth

about Mount Xianggu.

I'm afraid

knowing that might harm him.

Then you just

let him recognize the killer as his father?

It's not the time yet.

When it comes,

I'll be sure to let him know.

We Khitans

rove around as nomads.

We live on chariots and horses.

Only after Emperor Taizu advocated agriculture,

did we

settled down to farm.

But His Majesty remains

the habits formed in nomadic past,

relocates temporary palace when seasons change.

He will have to govern

on horses and carriages.

This unique way to govern and live,

is called Nabo.

What we look forward to most at that time

is the Moon Dance

that allows young men and women meet freely

on the way to Nabo.

Yanyan.

His Majesty was holding a knife.

Scared the hell out of me and sister.

It's my fault.

Sorry to get you worried.

Don't you ever

do that again.

When His Majesty really gets angry,

the consequences would be disastrous.

I got it, sister.

Well,

is father still mad?

Father didn't say much.

But do you still hold grudge against him?

I didn't know

this would get all of you involved.

I will...

I'll apologize to him.

If you can

really learn from this,

then it's a blessing in disguise.

Yanyan, Yanyan.

The Moon Dance in the evening,

let's go together.

I'll pass.

I don't want to

cause any more problems.

Let's go.

Leave Yanyan alone.

Brother Dalin.

After all these years,

didn't expect him

to be the commander

as soon as he got back.

Tell me about it.

Yeah.

He's here.

Commander.

Xiuge, brother Dalin.

Thank you for saving me in the archery game.

Brother Dalin, don't.

Did I convince you this time?

Brother Dalin.

It's been so many years.

But all you got are the same old tricks.

Derang, it's been a long time.

You have made great progress.

I'm now all convinced.

Xiao Dalin is here to see the commander.

I'm convinced at the very beginning.

Xiuge is here to see the commander.

Any orders, commander?

Pass down my word.

According to order from Taiping Palace,

we will inspect all barracks

to ensure the safety of the Moon Dance.

All shall act in accordance with the order.

Yes, sir.

More wine!

Wine!

Where's my wine?

My knife.

Where's my knife?

You!

Are you trying to kill me?

No!

Are you trying to kill me?

I didn't.

Are you trying to kill me?

Forgive me, forgive me.

I'll kill you!

It's you.

Anzhi, maid

I thought

the next would be me.

I'm so scared, it's horrible.

It's okay now.

Relax.

Please save me.

I will die

if I stay with His Majesty.

Please save me, please.

Don't worry.

I'm Imperial Uncle's favorite.

I got you.

I wish

one day

I can be there to serve you.

Even if as the lowest slave,

is so better than to be with His Majesty.

Don't be afraid.

I will save you.

Come on.

Fill the cup.

Come!

Let's dance, come on.

Come.

Come on.

Xiyin.

From now on,

you have to get close

to the Prime Minister

Xiao Siwen.

Xiao Siwen is not with Yelü Jing.

But he's very stubborn, not easy to get-by.

Father, you have means to get to him?

He is stubborn.

But he also has his weakness.

And that is...?

His three daughters.

I see.

Look how they dance.

Look!

Look, they're over there.

Let's get wasted today.

Are you looking for me?

King Xiyin.

I have other errands to attend to.

Now, if you excuse me.

Hunian.

Even the flying goose

will eventually return to its nest.

Under such beautiful moonlight,

let's dance, shall we?

King Xiyin, save that sweet talk

for other girls.

Hunian.

Beautiful girls from the empress' family

should go with

the true nobles on this steppe.

You and I together

will be the perfect combination

of the emperor's and empress' families.
