that a person can go
through. One minute,

you're at peace;
And the next minute,

your life is
completely in danger.

And you're
in the presence

of pure evil?

Bright, expansive, and lush,

California's
Jedediah Smith state park

is over 10,000 acres of pure,
undeveloped paradise.

The Jedediah Smith campground

is such a beautiful
and scenic area

and part of the reason that
it is so appealing to people

is that you really,
you step back in time

and you're in a place
that you don't see

all of the modern conveniences.

You're isolated, which is
why people go there.

They go there to be isolated
and to feel alone in the woods.

Year after year,
its raw beauty and remoteness

attracts campers
from all over the country.

And, yet, the park,
and the county that claims it,

are no stranger to crime.

We do have homicides
from time to time.

There have been some in the past
that we've had

that are very gruesome,

where body parts
have been removed,

and so we've had a few real
bad ones, with that respect.

In 1988,

Jedediah was a serene a place
a camper could hope for,

but for young, married couple
Doug and rozina Anderson,

deciding on a long weekend
in these peaceful woods

turns out to be
a fateful mistake.

Married for almost 2 years,

Doug and rozina live
in lake oswego,

a quaint suburb outside
of Portland, Oregon.

So what are you
paintin'?

Well, these are gonna
be flowers.

Rozina's gorgeous.

She had beautiful,
shoulder-length brown hair.

There wasn't a time when
she wasn't enthusiastic

and really seeking knowledge

and educating herself
and trying new things.

Doug was definitely
the quieter one.

He was not --

he liked to have
a good time, too,

but he wouldn't be like, "
there's one that's trouble.

There's trouble
comin' this way."

He was quiet,
but he just adored rozina.

You could tell.

I think they were
an awesome match,

totally the match
made in heaven.

for a couple of years.

We knew they were gonna be
on an elongated weekend,

so we kept care
of each other.

like 5 or 6 days,

at the most.
I mean, we'd love

The next morning,
the excited couple

makes their final preparations
for their big adventure.

After a stop in medford,
Oregon, to see rozina's aunt,

they cross the
Oregon-California border

and head toward
their final destination:

Jedediah Smith state park.

Well, this was the first time
they have ever really done

that long of a trip

because they were
both working so much.

They did, you know,

a lot of outdoor things
when they had time,

but it was never
as extensive as this trip.

That afternoon, Doug and rozina
arrive at stout grove,

a secluded, off-the-beaten-path
hideaway in the park,

that's surrounded
by majestic redwoods.

They kind of just
found a place,

and it's somewhere
I would've chose to park

if I was going through the same
area on a trip with my family.

But they were not within

the Jedediah Smith state park
camping area.

They'd gone off
to an area that

was really more
an informal one,

and I think there's
a great risk there.

God, it's almost

unreal.

Pictures do not
do it justice.

No cars,
no other campers,

no noise,

no interruptions.

I thought I said
no interruptions.

I'm gonna check out
the camp.

Now that they've found
their perfect camping spot,

rozina and Doug
set about turning it

into a private retreat
for two.

what danger is lurking

of Jedediah Smith state park,

outside of Crescent city,
California.

With a few hours
left before sunset,

the couple decides to head off
on a short hike.

After they leave,

a stranger

enters their campsite.

When you go out camping
in the redwoods

most times, you don't think

you're taking your life
in your hands.

After an idyllic day,

Doug and rozina decide
to call it a night.

to Jedediah Smith park
would in any way feel unsafe.

I think it's one of the safest
places of our county,

and probably the whole state.

To be putting myself
in their shoes,

the last thing I would expect,
if I decided to camp

in the location
where they were,

would be that anybody
would even come by.

It's them by themselves,
very remote,

nobody else probably
nearby them at all.

that was in just

All of a sudden, there's a man
with a firearm, threatening you,

and that's gotta be
one of the scariest things

that a person can go through.

One minute, you're at peace;

There were not campsites

that were immediately
adjacent to them.

There was nobody close enough

that they could've
called for help.

Alone in the dark,
in the middle of the woods,

rozina Anderson
is face-to-face

with the man who just
murdered her husband.

For whatever reason,
the guy hasn't killed her yet.

He's still got the rifle,
so, now it's just fear,

trying to figure out
what he's gonna do to you,

and you go into
the mode of survival

and doing what you can
to survive at that point.

She's in the worst place
that a person could ever be.

It's got to be absolutely
horrible and awful.

Rozina has no choice
but to beg for her life.

The helplessness. You know,
you can't do anything.

They need me.

Even to try and run away.

I won't say anything.

Where are you
gonna run to?

There's the one road.

If anyone asks, I'll tell
them it was an accident.

It was
a misunderstanding.

So, just to do
what you can to survive,

but there's not a lot to do.

Just hoping he
doesn't kill you.

Here's my answer.

It takes several days

before anyone begins
to realize

that Doug and rozina's trip
has not gone according to plan.

That's weird.

My son was asking me,

because he was feeding
their cats,

when were they
gonna get home?

Doug!

Rozina?!

And I said, "I don't know.
I don't know."

I assumed they'd be home
Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday,

but, they didn't get home.

Her employer called and said
that rozie hadn't returned

and it was not like her
to not show up for work

and we thought for sure that,

well, maybe they took
an extra day.

More than a week

after Doug and rozina set off
on their dream vacation,

a couple of hikers
come across their Van.

Try the door.

-Get outta there!

Okay.

My god!

We have to get help.
-Yeah.

Detective,
deputy bill Steven.

How can I help?

Doug and rozina Anderson.

Oregon driver's licenses.

It looks like he was --

deputy.

You know, a small community, the
homicide rate is extremely low,

and now we've got two
travelers from another state

that have both been gunned down
in one of our parks.

It was kind of a hard thing

for the entire community
of del norte to absorb

and it was the first time
that I had been involved

in any type of
a homicide investigation.

Trying to track down
the families now.

My mom, she

had it so tough because of,
you know,

here, her one daughter,
that she'd kept trying

to have kids
until she'd have a daughter,

had been taken from her.

And it was just really,
really difficult

to break the news to her

that there was no happy news
about rozina and Doug ended up.

The impact was just
almost physical,

and as you feel,
you think, "my gosh.

I'm here because
my best friend is gone.

And her husband, too."

This makes no sense.

While their families mourn
the loss of Doug and rozina,

investigators are determined
to find their killer.

There was a lot of people that
came forward with information

and detectives sought out
a lot of people.

They went to the local stores
and tried to get

any information they could,
any leads, about people that,

you know, didn't belong there,
that were acting strange.

Yeah, um,

around the 16th,

I noticed there was
a Van parked out there.

I didn't think anything
of it at the time.

Griffin:
There were hikers
that came forward

that were in the area,
that saw things.

So you're askin' me
what happened that day?

Well, we were hiking

for a few hours.

We got back to the car.

My purse was snatched
out of my car

when my husband
and I were hiking.

There was even, at one point,
a psychic that came forward

and said she had a vision
of the main suspects

that the detectives
thought it was.

I see them.

The men that did this.

One of them has

blue eyes

and blond hair.

They're bad.

Bad men.

Okay, well, thanks again
for coming in.

The deputy
will show you out.

We had a couple of people
that we thought

could possibly
have done it.

We looked at them as suspects.

We talked to them.

We talked to people that
they knew

and some of that dragged out

over the course
of several years.

You start to feel
a little bit desperate,

like maybe this is
one of those ones

that isn't going to get solved.

27 years pass
without any solid leads.

And, as the decades
go by, you know,

there's quite a few times

or just discussed by the
deputies over the years

and other ideas thrown out and
other possibilities discussed

and it's something
that we don't forget.

And then, suddenly,
a huge break.

I know I was vague
over the phone,

.-but I thought this might be

easier to explain
in person.

Remember a case back
in '88,

the victims' names were
Doug and rozina Anderson?

Yeah, of course,
up in stout grove. Why?

We got a guy
wants to cop to it.

You got a name?

Well, that's one of the
reasons we called you.

Guy says he knows you.

-Knows me?
-Yeah.

The name's John kelley.

-Kelley?
-Wants to speak to you

personally.

I'll be damned.

It's been 27 years since
Doug and rozina Anderson

were murdered in
Jedediah Smith state park.

Now, a man named John kelley
wants to confess to the crime

and, it turns out,
he may know the detective

who originally
worked the case.

He

was an old friend of mine.

I hung out with a group
of pretty good kids

in high school and
he was part of that group.

And so, at the time of my junior
and senior year in high school,

I was pretty good
friends with him.

It was veryodd.

John kelley has already been
convicted of another murder,

but, in a bid to escape
the death penalty,

he decides there's
one more crime

he'd like to get off his chest.

Get outta there!--

This was my first major case
to interview a killer

and I expected, going in,
to see pure evil

sittin' across
the table from me,

seeing that Charles manson,
you know, Jeffrey dahmer,

whatever, whoever
that pure evil is.

And then you walk
into the interview

and sit down with Mr. Kelley
and I was totally surprised.

It was more like sitting down
with a friend from high school

that you haven't seen
for a couple decades,

and it was just, it was amazing
and scary at the same time

that a person like that
could do what he did

'cause he didn't seem
like a person that would.

No! No, no, no,
no, no, no.

It was --

it was awful to process the
information that he was giving.

I've, you know, listened

to a lot of awful things
from people

in a lot of interviews
over the course of my career.

This bothered me more
than any of them,

in that it was
an old friend of mine

admitting to just absolutely
awful and heinous things.

I was trying to get him
to explain to me

why he was doing that.

I'm glad he will never come out
and never hurt anybody again,

but, you know,
it would be really nice to

edit that chapter in our life

and just erase
his name completely

from all of our memory

and anything that had
to do with our family

'cause people think,
"well, something like that's

never gonna happen
to my family."

Well, then it does.

In December 2015,

John kelley is sentenced
to two consecutive life terms

without the possibility
of parole

for the murders
of Doug and rozina Anderson.

John kelley absolutely
belongs in state prison

and he needs to be there for
the rest of his natural life.

There's a lot of bad things
that happen to good people

and we have to remember that,
that we're not

in a protective bubble
where nothing can happen to US.

I think the thing
to be learned is

all the beauty of nature

that we're put here to enjoy

and looking forward to the day
when we'll see rozina again.

It won't be in this
lifetime, but,

you're supposed to take a more

long-range view of things
when you're a Christian

and that's what we try
to keep in mind.
