Episode 8

Long Aoyi.

Order from the master,

the clothing samples have been made.

The production of gold thread clothes officially begins.

Sister.

Do you really want to go?

The gold thread has been recovered.

It’s time for me to go.

But I don’t want you to go,

It’s fine.

I’m just leaving the manor,

not the Silver City.

If you miss me,

go to the Southern City to visit me.

Master Long, you know

the Silk Manor and Longzhu Gang

never have any dealings usually.

Separated by a wall,

we seem to be hundreds of miles away from each other.

Yes, that’s right.

We’re busy working on weekdays.

Even our master

rarely goes out of the manor.

I don’t want to see him.

A lot of things have happened recently.

I haven’t gone out

for months.

It’s okay. At the worst,

I can dig a doghole

in the corner for each of you.

Everyone owns a door.

I will receive you personally.

Well, don’t be upset.

We have a celebration party tonight.

All right then.

Xinsilu

The gold thread was recovered.

Their business starts to run again.

The money I’ve invested

should be recouped with interest.

But Dongzi is dead.

Who is the accountant now?

Second Master.

Master, we know you’re leaving the manor today.

We’ve already prepared a banquet.

A brazier.

First, to wash you off the dust.

Second, to help you out of the ill-fortune.

We got everything prepared.

We must celebrate after we return.

Of course we must celebrate.

First, we cleared the Longzhu Gang

of suspicion about the gold thread,

and recovered Dachun’s reputation.

Second,

I can finally leave the terrible place.

There’s one more thing to celebrate.

The money our brothers saved

has earned lots of interest.

Master Li.

Don’t rush me.

I’ll go as soon as I get my silver reward.

Happy to work together.

Let’s have an amicable parting, and never meet again.

You can’t go.

What do you want, Li Qingliu?

Are you trying to deny?

I don’t owe anyone favors.

Manager Liu is out on business today.

I must pay you the reward tomorrow.

He is out. Fine.

I’m not in a hurry.

I’ll come back another day.

Second Master. Let’s go.

Wait!

Not only you and me

suffered from the gold thread incident,

but the whole Silk Manor

suffered too.

So?

So I want to take this opportunity

to give everyone a vacation.

Let’s relax a little.

You, Second Master and Xiaoqin,

are all invited.

Master,

I think Master Li is sincere.

It’s difficult to refuse such kindness.

Why don’t you let our brothers

take two days off for relaxation?

OK. Well.

Shall we have a meal?

Oh, no, no.

You have too bad tastes. It’s boring to have a meal with you.

Then an opera?

No.

Handsome scholars and pretty girls.

Emperors and generals. They’re insipid.

Well, forget it.

I’d better go back to eat meat.

Master,

what about a hot spring?

That sounds nice.

It’s relaxing.

At the foot of the mountain in the south of the city,

I’m running a hot spring.

Such a nice coincidence.

Suitable for young and old.

It’s settled then.

Well, it’s just two or three days.

The Silk Manor won’t be stolen.

That’s it. I have to go.

Suyong Hall

So,

he manages to change a supplier

and maintains regular production.

He doesn’t lack goods and funds.

I thought

as long as we cut off his supply,

and accepted the official silver allocated by the imperial court,

Prince Zhao

would support us more.

But he didn’t fall.

He even got back on his feet after having recovered the gold thread.

By contrast,

the interest we have to pay this month

is no less than the capital.

Nobody knows

he has the ability to save the situation.

Obviously,

he must be this year’s guild leader.

Go for wool and come home shorn.

At last, we are the one

who is in a dilemma.

Your Highness.

Your Highness. The bosses

offered the monthly material money in person.

I have it counted.

That’s the total.

Well, about the selection of guild leader,

Your Highness, with all due respect,

It’s an open secret in the guild.

Shen Yiguan

isn’t open to persuasion,

yet Li Qingliu

persuaded him easily

and resumed production.

Behind this,

there might be something shady.

The imperial court presented

gold and silver to him.

He refused to take it.

Instead, he stretched his arm

to the south to earn hard money.

With so many efforts,

did he try to avoid something?

Now, Li Qingliu is encumbered

by the production of gold thread clothes.

But he still turned down the offer of the government.

He is really in contempt of the imperial court.

Don’t mention him again.

I specially prepared good liquor for Your Highness.

Your Highness, please take your seat.

I appreciate your kind offer.

Mr. Du,

please send several tax officials

to Xinsilu tomorrow.

Goodbye, Your Highness.

Suyong Hall

Your Highness, when you first came to Silver City,

the servants

presented you with the account book of Xinsilu.

There seemed to be no problem.

Did you see the wily old birds?

They want to use my sword to fight their own battle.

Good.

I’ll push the boat with the current.

Maybe,

I would catch the foxes’ tails.

As for Li Qingliu,

he needs to be put in his place.

Before Sister came here,

master never let us come out with him

and have group activities.

It’s nothing.

In Longzhu Gang,

we usually go out together

to wine and dine.

Your master

doesn’t know how to use the “prison and rabbit” tactic.

Prison and rabbit?

Yeah.

Make you work like you are in prison.

Sometimes let you out

and jump at will like rabbits.

He is so stingy.

Master Li looks young,

but you’re running such a big family business.

You’re competent.

I’m flattered.

With all due respect,

how old are you?

I was adopted by the Li Family when I was a child.

It was probably in Shangyuan Period.

Shangyuan Period?

Freshly boiled hotspring eggs!

Master!

When shall we go back to the gang?

Soon. In the future,

we don’t have to see

the stink face again.

But after spending these days with him,

I don’t think Master Li

is a bad person.

Just think, he is a profiteer,

but he didn’t go after the gold thread.

Instead, he went to save you.

Come on.

I was so lucky

that he didn’t break my bones.

Master.

How much money do we get?

I did the math.

With the 10,000 taels of silver reward,

we get 80,000 taels of silver in total.

That’s enough for us to open a few more stores,

and purchase a few more mu of land for silkworm rearing.

One is enough.

No one will marry you if you get fat.

Wait for me for a moment.

Master.

It’s a nice place.

Shuisheng and Qi Zheng are happy.

They were grateful to Master Long.

Two men have a bath together.

Never mind.

If I may say,

you have a different attitude toward Master Long.

See,

Silk Manor never welcomes outsiders.

She is the first.

All the clerks take a vacation.

It hasn’t been heard of for years.

You don’t want to be close to women.

You even keep the right distance to Miss Du.

But, these days,

you and Master Long

have spent much time together.

You went out alone

without me.

All in all,

you are blaming me

for not letting you go out with me.

No.

From a businessman’s point of view,

the time when you chased Dongzi,

you should go after the gold thread.

But you saved Master Long.

Why?

You are such a fool.

The gold thread incident was not only our problem,

but also a trouble that Longzhu Gang needed to solve quickly.

Others may not try their best.

But she will.

It turned out

with the gold thread being recovered,

she got silver reward

and got rid of her suspicion.

This is a business

that benefits both of us.

Profiteer.

Mr. Lyu,

I was sent to

ask you if everything went well.

Please report back,

we have clues about the man you’re looking for.

But, to make sure nothing goes wrong,

after I get the hard evidence,

I’ll report back in person.

I ask to leave.

Xinsilu

According to the order of the salt and iron officer,

Xinsilu we come to inspect the trade tax.

The accountant’s office of Xinsilu must cooperate.

Sir, please have a look.

Sir, if you need anything,

you’d better wait for our boss to come back.

Look,

you’ve made such a mess around here.

I don’t know how to explain to my boss.

I’m in charge of salt and iron trade.

This time,

inspection of trade tax is carried out in the whole city.

You don’t have a say.

Take him away.

Sir?

Go.

Sir, no, no, no.

You can’t do that, sir.

Sir?

Master.

Master.

Stop!

Look.

Look.

Are you injured?

Step back.

Mr. Li, do you try to resist the law?

Mr. Zhu, if you have to check the accounts,

you should do it according to the rules.

You either check the accounts of one year

or those of two years.

It’s one thing to replenish stock,

and another thing to deliver products.

You just check all the accounts at the same time.

Should we report to you

about how much rice we ate today?

Mr. Li,

we

don’t want to be buried in the account books either.

But our boss said clearly

we must check all the accounts.

Please do cooperate with us.

Rules are rules.

I won’t

give you convenience

to break the rules.

What if I go on with it?

Move. Move.

Go away!

Who?

Go away!

No...

Go away!

Be careful.

It’s you.

Thanks.

Never mind.

Your Highness!

Perfect timing.

I was checking the accounts with my men,

but Li Qingliu stopped us with no reason.

Your Highness, please uphold justice.

Li Qingliu,

you publicly rejected the government’s capital before.

Now you stopped the officer

from checking your accounts.

What tricks are you playing?

I dare not play a trick.

I just followed the rules.

OK.

Since Mr. Li follows rules in everything,

I will set a rule for you.

From now on, the accounting office of Xinsilu is closed down.

You can’t reopen it till all your accounts are checked.

How come?

The accounting office is closed down?

What about the money I kept in the Silk Manor?

- Master. - Master.

Yiwen.

Yiwen, come.

Take it.

No! No!

Take it.

No! No!

Take it.

No! No!

Master Long,

even if you give me more chicks,

I can’t grant

your request.

I don’t believe you.

I gave all my favorite chicks

to you.

Do me a favor.

Spit out our money.

Master Long, my goodness,

Dongzi passed away.

I just take care of the accounts temporarily.

Now Prince Zhao

closed the accounting office down.

Not to mention your money

kept in the store,

even our monthly salary

and the money used to purchase goods

couldn’t be taken out.

You mean the accounting office is closed down,

and the Silk Manor has no money.

That’s the point.

Now the accounting office

can’t spit out a penny.

Yiwen, what should we do?

We have to break in the office ourselves.

- Go. Get out. - Leave me alone.

- My money. My money is in there. - Get out.

Get out!

Let me go!

- Go. - Get out.

My money.

Closed by Silver City Government My money. Give me my money.

Wait.

Your Highness.

All of you withdraw.

Yes.

Ms. Long,

the gold thread was recovered.

Why don’t you go home?

I’m supposed to go home after I get my money.

Just because...

You can tell me everything.

Why do you make such a mess?

It’s official business of the imperial court.

Do you have anything to do with it?

Well,

do you want to have a drink?

We can talk while drinking.

How do you know I love drinking?

The whole Silver City

know Ms. Long is a good drinker.

And...

I know something else about you.

Do you want to hear it?

You’re an interesting man.

But I don’t drink recently.

I can take a rain check.

I just remembered something.

It may help you.

What is it?

Last time at big bazar,

were you looking for pepper?

Yeah.

Are you serious?

Just have a look and you’ll know.

My money. It’s killing me.

What should I do?

Could it reopen?

All of my money is in there.

What about our monthly salary?

It’s all gone.

The East Gate Silver Manor

doubled the salary to poach me.

Do you think I should go?

Go, go, go. Do your job.

Go, go, go.

Master, the worst thing is...

What’s wrong?

Because of the capital,

the rent of the restaurant has more than doubled.

Many of our brothers are out of work

and wait for the subsidy from the gang.

But our money…

You were very kind.

But it’s just a bad timing.

Too bad.

Two hours’ delay,

we can’t withdraw our money.

No.

We have to find another way.

At the worst,

I’m going to borrow some money.

I can’t eat pork hock any more.

I feel guilty.

Master, you must find a way.

Qingliu,

at present, the Silk Manor is

in a great bustle.

Master Long shouldn’t

be involved in our business again.

I know the boundary.

I’m always at ease about you.

Have a talk.

Master Long.

You should knock the door.

Forget it.

5,000 taels

What’s your deal?

10,000 taels.

This is my private silver.

Master Long.

This is the silver reward

for you to find our gold thread.

If you have any needs later,

just tell me.

What shall I do?

5,000 taels It’s a consolation to get 10,000 taels.

But what shall we do with the 50,000 taels

we put in the store?

Don’t worry, Master Long.

I’ve taken the silver out early.

You needn’t worry about the government.

Miss Du,

before you came out today,

didn’t you look in the mirror?

What do you mean?

In your ear.

You can speak it aloud.

I don’t like whispers.

Fine.

I just want to say,

there’s a long hair that

comes out of your nose.

You burnt the bridge after crossing it.

Since the gold thread was recovered,

it saved the Silk Manor

a lot of

compensation money.

It also saved your business reputation.

You think

only 10,000 taels are enough?

5,000 taels I don’t want the silver.

Then what do you want?

I want to learn to do business with you.

Do you want to learn to make clothes?

That’s a gift. I can’t learn it.

I want to learn

the tricks you’ve played in business.

How do you force your rivals to lower their price?

How do you charge

before you produce?

And,

how do you fix a high price and

make people pay for it voluntarily?

Master Long,

did you make a mistake?

Of course I made a mistake.

Such a beauty as Miss Du

won’t grow nose hairs.

You!

What were you talking about?

I was asking for advice from Master Li...

well,

Lu’s Herbal Classic about how to grow flowers.

This is one of Tao Zhu’s famous articles.

It is all about merchant’s skill.

Is it?

Isn’t it a deceptive name?

I need advice

because I don’t know anything.

Well.

I have business. I should go.

Master Li,

think carefully

about the question I asked just now.

I’ll visit you another day.

5,000 taels

Who are you?

Don’t talk nonsense. Open the door.

Your Highness!

Whose belongings are these?

Young master,

didn’t you see the name here?

Pepper is as valuable as gold.

The quantity of pepper that offered as tribute to the imperial court is

only 0.6 tons each year.

Here

are 1.8 tons of pepper.

Zhu Chengzhi,

is just a fifth rank official

in charge of salt and iron trade

in Silver City.

How dare he?

Inventory of Articles

I’m just a doorman.

I don’t know anything.

Your Highness, how do we punish him?

He’s right.

He’s just a doorman.

Don’t take the trouble to punish him.

But think about it.

It’s such a small bank,

but it conceals so many tricks.

How does it stay safe in Silver City?

About this,

never bring it up to anyone,

even the governor.

I didn’t see anything.

I didn’t hear anything.

Lady.

Lady, what are you doing?

The Silk Manor is in trouble.

I must help Qingliu.

Lady, you forgot.

It’s Prince Zhao’s idea.

If you do this,

master will be angry.

Xiaoxian.

Father,

I heard the accounting office of Xinsilu was closed down

by Prince Zhao.

Yes, Father.

You’re my daughter.

You must know

the situation well.

When do you step forward.

When do you get away.

I believe you don’t need me

to tell you again.

What do you mean, Father?

Xinsilu is lack of money now.

If you…

I threw the jewelries away

because I don’t like them.

Father,

I know you will

attain eminence step by step.

As your daughter,

I must be noble in the future.

Only the best jewelry

and the best man could match me.

OK.

You’re definitely my daughter.

I promise you,

as long as I’m here,

I’ll let you marry the prince.

Lady.

Put away the things.

Longzhu Gang So, brothers,

I have to stay for a while

at Silk Manor.

Are you kidding?

I told you not to go, not to go.

Well,

Now their accounting office is closed down,

and we’re stuck in the trouble.

Master, we are not

afraid of a clothes seller.

- Yes. - Of course.

Listen,

this time I’m going back voluntarily.

I’m not detained by Li Qingliu.

Most importantly,

did the discords among the stores

in Silver City

affect us?

They affected us so much.

The wharf business is not as good as before.

The restaurant rent

has doubled.

We can’t make enough money to pay the rent.

Besides farming,

no matter part-time or full-time job,

we must look at others’ face.

If they need us,

we get the job.

If they don’t need us, they give us the brush.

Yeah.

So

I’m going to the Silk Manor

to find us a livelihood.

These days,

I’ve been watching carefully

how Xinsilu do their business.

It turns out they don’t

just produce products and sell them.

It isn’t that simple.

They are rich.

They can do whatever they want.

We can’t learn that.

We can’t learn that.

What is the most important thing to do business?

Money?

I don’t think so.

The most important things are

information and connection.

That’s exactly what people like us

are good at.

You mean that

you’ll work

undercover for us at the Silk Manor?

Undercover.

No kidding.

Gengzi.

You number our sericulturists.

How many people do we have and what is the output of silk.

You figure it out.

OK.

The second thing,

Second Master,

please gather all the idle labors

in the gang.

Next silk season,

we must be the silk supplier

of Xinsilu.

No matter how big a store he owns,

his business is limited in an area.

But if we try our best,

maybe in some time,

we’ll run a bigger business than he does.

We could do business with Dayi State,

Tubo state,

and throughout

the world.

Great. It’s great.

Good. Throughout the world.

Throughout the world.

Wonderful!

OK.

- Master. - Great.

These days at the Silk Manor,

did you see Mr. Li’s parents?

He has no parents like me.

He is brought up by his wet nurse.

What’s wrong?

Never mind.

We had a chat when we were in the bath.

Xiaoxian,

I appreciate your kindness.

But I don’t want you

to upset your father

because of the Silk Manor.

I did this for…

The Silk Manor is lack of money.

Your men are being poached too.

I worry that if it goes on like this,

you’ll lose your money and workers.

Don’t forget.

I’m also a manager of Xinsilu.

Why didn’t Master Long leave?

Is that a problem?

Do you want to see me off?

Don’t be so courteous.

I just have a small package.

All my valuables are in it.

You’re kidding.

During your stay in the manor,

you made so many friends.

I can’t compete with them

to see you off.

Xiaoxian, you go home first.

What are you doing?

Sorry. Sorry.

- Never hit people in the face. - Sorry. I didn’t do it on purpose.

Why do you scare me?

What are you doing outside my master’s study?

Do you

have a crush on my master?

I’m watching our master.

Just now I saw Du Xiaoxian

went with a long face.

Now our master

is in the study with your master.

A single man and a single woman?

Lady Du left in anger?

You can’t see anything here.

I’ll take you to a better place.

Go.

Seriously?

Seriously.

Come on.

Can I see it clearly?

Of course you can.

- Hold this hand. Hold this hand. - Hurry.

You know

the silkworm eggs trading was

in Qiyan’s hands.

But after the game at Wanhua,

sericultures turned their coat.

I have taken half of the trading.

Their raw silk

gets markup again and again

before arriving in your warehouse.

The middlemen’s profits doubled.

But your cost increases.

If I’m going to supply

raw silk to your store,

I only add 10%

to the cost price.

What do you think?

That’s what you said

about learning business from me.

Since you don’t want to teach me,

let’s talk about cooperation.

Do you have money for purchasing?

5,000 taels I have the 10,000 taels you gave me.

Now you’re in a critical situation.

I’ll do it.

You’ll save manpower and material resources.

I’m not taking advantage of you.

It’s called business mind.

What are your

conditions?

I just told you.

Add 10% to the cost price.

What else? Make it clear at one time.

You should say yes

if you think it’s profitable.

You should have started

the business before.

Even if you have sericultures,

the work of silk reeling is complex.

It needs a lot of manpower.

You want to start the work.

It’s not so easy.

I ask to live in the Silk Manor.

To match the sellers and buyer,

there’re too many problems to solve.

Everyone in your manor has his own duty.

If you specially draft a man

to do the work,

it will increase costs.

It’s the same in our gang.

But if I’m about to do the job,

I will be the most suitable person.

I’ll go between you and the sellers. I’ll solve all the problems.

I live in your manor,

just like the place set up by Chang’an,

which is called...

Liaison mansion.

Right. An agency anyway.

It’s more convenient.

It’s not impossible.

But…

What do you want me to do?

Escort

Hold on.

I have to do the accounts carefully

to make sure I’m not tricked.

It has been a long time.

What are they doing?

Master, you must stay,

or we can’t console our brothers.

Tell you what, it doesn’t matter,

as long as they don’t have their dress

and hair messed up.

Master, you must let her stay,

otherwise I can’t

see Xiaoqin every day.

Get off.

10% for one single deal.

If you make 50 deals monthly,

in a year you’ll make…

Good boy.

In a year,

we can earn more than 100,000 taels too.

We’ll purchase the raw silk.

Another condition,

we are in charge of the escort of goods.

Sure. According to your condition,

how much would I get?

I’ll go. I’ll leave.

I’m fine. I’m fine.

Are you OK?

You may leave.

What about the deal?

I agree.

Alright.

She comes out. Let’s go.

She is out. She is out.

- Untidy clothes. - Messy hair.

Falling in love is terrible.

I love money more.
