hello everyone I'm Alex dykes and today

we are inside a 2015 and a half Volvo

xc60 taking a look at the Volvo senses

connect infotainment and navigation

system

now the senses connect infotainment

system set right here in the dashboard

is essentially what changes for the 2015

and a half model year across the Volvo

lineup now going over the basics we have

a single USB port right here in the

center console easily able to charge

tablet devices which is a very nice

touch right there we also have a

Bluetooth interface and an auxilary

input right there in the center console

as well now moving over to the dashboard

you can see right here that we have this

7 inch high-resolution screen nestled

right into the dashboard this is smaller

than you'll find in certain BMW and Audi

products however in this particular

segment the screen this size is not that

unusual the mercedes benz glk for

instance a number of other Mercedes

products that compete with this

particular system do use a fairly small

LCD as well now rather than a navigation

knob between the front seats Volvo puts

everything right here on the centre

console on this side we have a

navigation knob this ring rotates around

ok to enter we also have menu right

there that allows to pop up menu in

certain contextual screens exit and back

button right there

this also functions as the tune dial if

you're on the radio working our way

inwards we get dedicated track forward

and backward buttons this allows us to

access our internet connected options my

car allows you to access your vehicle's

safety settings as well as make changes

to certain vehicle preferences Bluetooth

telephone interface eject button for the

single slot optical disc player media

radio and navigation right over here

right in the middle of all this we have

a button Bank that looks very much like

a telephone button bank this provides a

wide variety of different features in

the system you can navigate around the

map using this button Bank you can also

use this for your radio presets you can

use it for address entry by spelling out

the address like you would on an old

text cell phone now in addition to those

controls on the centre console you can

also command most major assistant

commands right here from the steering

wheel we have this click dial knob right

there in the middle that rotates around

just like that navigation ring click

down is the same as clicking the ok

button on the navigation ring we have

the same exit button right there as well

in addition to our voice command button

dedicated track forward backward button

and volume up/down button we're now

taking a look at this seven-inch LCD

nestled right into the dashboard as you

can see we're on the navigation system

which is where we'll start now in

addition to that 2d view that we just

saw we also have a 3d view this looks

very similar to BMWs M

mapping products it's almost as quick as

BMWs it's relatively similar to most of

the mercedes-benz products that are now

available on the market we also have

traffic information displayed on this

system if you're zoomed in close enough

entering destinations in the system is

very easy we simply click the menu

button we get this navigation menu you

can set a destination see your itinerary

or your route traffic information you

can cancel guidance or change map

settings as well thanks to new Volvo

on-call integration we also have sent

two car features available where you can

download an address on your desktop

computer or your smartphone and then you

can send that right to the car now

moving on we can either use those direct

access buttons or we can just click the

exit button and we'll go to the main

menu in the system as you can see we

have that navigation option that we were

just on you can scroll down to radio and

we get direct access to Sirius weather

Sirius XM FM and AM radio as well if we

click on over to Sirius right here you

can see that we're on the hits 2 channel

this little two icon right over here

indicates that that is the preset button

for number two so we just press that

number keypad below then we get those

preset stations so number three is 70s

on seven number four is 80s on eight and

we do get album as well as track

information right down there provided by

the Sirius XM now navigating through

stations is very snappy we just simply

rotate that dial as you can see we start

rotating through our station list right

there this is very responsive as opposed

to some of those other systems out there

but do take a while to load that

information at any time if you want to

adjust your sound settings we simply hit

that sound button that was right there

on the volume knob because our vehicle

has the optional Harman Kardon sound

system we do have this premium sound

option right there that allows us to

change our soundstage adjust the center

and surround volume right there as well

we get our usual bass treble fader we

also get a complete equalizer right

there which is a five band equalizer

navigation volume is adjustable

separately as well as the voice command

volume and the ringtone volume if we

click the exit button all the way back

we will end up back at the vehicle's

main menu and we get swell down to the

next option which is media right now I

have a Bluetooth device

paired right here and it is playing

audio so if I go ahead and click down on

that one

you'll get track information right over

here so you can see right now we're

playing Phil Collins in the air tonight

via Bluetooth I can click back on that

and we'll now choose the iPod interface

because Bluetooth this interface does

not allow you to see your tracklist in

this particular vehicle so unlike

certain Toyota and Lexus models where

you can actually browse your Bluetooth

media device with this interface

you cannot do that in the Volvo senses

Connect system now what we're on the

iPod interface there is something you

should know I do have an iPhone 5 with

iOS 8 installed on this device and it

doesn't work quite right with the Volvo

senses Connect system it appears to be

something that Apple has done with iOS 8

because if you have iOS 7 the device

seems to work just fine

with iOS 8 however when I plug it in

using the USB connection the phone isn't

recognized by the system and the phone

keeps flashing back and forth between

charging and not charging so that is

something to keep in mind I had no

problem using the iPad however with iOS

8 on it that you see right here I also

had no problem using other iPod products

when we're on the iPod interface we do

have album art right there the current

track playing and then you can see the

status the current track right down

there below that now via this interface

we do have complete access to our iPods

playlists artists albums genres etc

however there are no voice commands to

be able to voice command those tracks

artists etc from your iPod or your USB

media device they click back on that

media button again we do get our list of

different media inputs again we have

discs USB iPod Bluetooth and the

auxiliary input right down there click

on over to the telephone interface we

have our fairly typical Bluetooth phone

interface you can also use the dial pad

right there to direct dial a number

right like that if we scroll the wheel

around we do get the contact list that

is downloaded right from your bluetooth

paired smartphone and you can search

this list with the car we click on over

to the my car you will see the status of

the various safety system so collision

warning lane departure warning bliss and

the driver alert system are all on

standby because we're sitting here

parked you can also click the ok button

to get a menu and you can change your

vehicle settings like your active

bending lights turn stability control

off Drive our alert city safety

collision warning and your active high

beam system if your vehicle is equipped

we also get trip statistics on this

screen you can see your average fuel

economy and your fuel economy over the

last few periods of time most vehicle

settings are accessed right here via

this settings menu in my car we would

get a wide variety of vehicle settings

from lights to key locks mirror settings

etc you can adjust the way the driver

support systems function how aggressive

they are in their operation etc now new

for 2015 and a half is this internet

settings option right here and right in

here you will see that we now have

connect through car modem and that is

because we have a 3G GSM car modem built

right into the car and for the US market

the carrier of choice

is a TNT and if we click on that one you

can get information about this

particular cellular modem you can see

what network we're on right now you can

get your data roaming information lock

SIM card you can also access your access

point name because we now have a Wi-Fi

access point built right into this

vehicle you can see that right down here

under car Wi-Fi hotspot now you also

have the option of having this data

service connect via bluetooth via Wi-Fi

or none so if you do have a Wi-Fi

hotspot you can have senses connect

connect through that if you have a

bluetooth paired smartphone that

supports this feature you can also

connect through that bluetooth paired

smartphone now let's take a look at why

you would want that cell modem built

right into the system we're going to go

ahead and click on that little globe

icon and this will load the Volvo census

connect apps now with census connect

apps we have apps that are very similar

to what you'll find in other car

manufacturers out there especially in

this luxury segment the big difference

here is that these apps are all

operating via the cell modem that is

built into the system so it's not

operating off my iphone right here even

though this iPhone is paired with the

system it's operating off of that

built-in 3G modem so if I click this

find fuel button this will load the find

fuel app and all that information is

again downloaded via this built-in 3G

modem now that we're in this find fuel

dialog box you can see all the various

fuel stations that are listed right in

here they'll show up on this little map

right there as well now rather

unfortunately when we click on one of

these options we only get the options

for more information or start navigation

and under more information we simply get

the address and the phone number of this

gas station so it will not tell you how

expensive the gas is at this particular

location but you can see right here we

see start navigation show on map call

etc glimpse is an interesting app option

in this system if you're not familiar

with glimpse it allows your friends and

people that you're willing to share your

location information with to share your

location information with them of course

it would be your cars information so if

you want people to see where you're

driving see where you're close to etc

you can enable glimpse in your car will

actually report its location through

glimpse so people can find you we also

have a local search function which

allows you to find certain businesses

right here via this interface this is

very similar to the Google search

options that you'll find in the BMW and

Audi products we also have this Pandora

interface which is kind of an

interesting twist now it's interesting

about this Pandora implementation is

that this is operating again off of its

own built-in cellular modem and that

status you can see right over here on

the

side of the screen that's the signal on

my ATT paired smartphone right over here

and this is the ATT signal on this

built-in smartphone now with its own

interface this means you don't need to

have your bluetooth paired smartphone in

the vehicle with you in order for

Pandora to operate we also have a better

cellular antenna in this vehicle then

you'll find in your average smartphone

which means you'll have better reception

in certain fringe areas now we do have

full access to our playlists in the

system you can also skip tracks as you

can see right there it's gonna skip on

to the next trap and you can thumbs-up

and thumbs-down tracks just like you

would on the smartphone app now that

I've thought up this song we have this

little thumbs up button right there

that'll indicate that you've done that

we can always turn the scroll wheel and

that will allow you to access your

various playlists we also have parking

pay which is not yet available for us

consumption because Volvo hasn't

finished working out the arrangements of

actually paying for parking in the

system but it does work in Europe

we also have our do which is very

similar to Pandora in that it's a

streaming music service we have our send

a car option right there again we have

stitcher for news sports at talk tune in

again more radio stations operating the

same way as that Pandora input we have

weather you can view your weather

forecasts right here on the screen again

this is all being provided by the data

service rather than Sirius XM service

now by using this internet weather

database I do have a weather report that

is much closer to my actual location

than in any of the vehicles that use

Sirius XM data because if I was using

Sirius XM data the closest location

would actually be San Jose California to

me that's about 35 miles away and the

weather can be very different when

you're this much closer to the coast

this is actually a little bit more

correct the golf course can vary between

our 25 forecast right here on this

current screen or we can click down to

the seven-day forecast right down there

now very much like BMWs iDrive we also

have a wiki locations option this is

very similar to BMWs wiki tour guide

that's integrated into the current

version of BMWs iDrive however unlike

BMWs iDrive we do not have

text-to-speech in this system so the

system will not read out these Wikipedia

entries to you you can only view them

right here on the screen as you can see

right here we have a search option we

can also choose the NIR car option which

will search for Wikipedia entries near

my current location locations listed

right there we're just going to go ahead

and click on the first one

Amaya Creek and we're going to get

information on it you could also

navigate right to

destination if it does tickle your fancy

we get some abbreviated information

right over here on the right side of the

screen

it's a creek located in Santa Cruz

County it's part of the SoCal Creek

Watershed Creek is named after two

brothers and then it sort of trails off

right there we can click the read about

button right there and we get a little

bit more information but it will not

read the entire Wikipedia article to you

really just pulls this first paragraph

right off of Wikipedia and last but not

least we do have Yelp so you can find

local businesses and reviews about those

local businesses you can navigate right

to them

you can call them right here through

this system taking a look up here in the

ceiling you can see we do have an SOS

button and an on call button that's

because the twenty fifteen and a half

electronics upgrade package also brings

a revised telematics system very much

like OnStar we have an SOS button right

up here you can hit that and you can get

an emergency assistance should you need

it the car can also call emergency

services if you're involved in an

accident and an airbag deploys you can

call this on-call button here for the

rest of the various on-call services

which I'm just going to go ahead and

list right here on the screen now part

of this new telematics system is a brand

new Volvo on-call app right here I have

it running on my iPad because it's a

little bit easier to see this app on the

camera rather than on my iPhone there

are various different platforms that are

supported by this Volvo on-call app

going over the features one at a time we

can scroll across top you can see your

latest distance to empty you can see

your temperature near your Volvo latest

trip that you did 34 miles 51 minutes I

used 1.8 gallons you can see the status

of the doors and windows you cannot

close the doors and windows but you can

see their status so if the window or the

sunroof is open it would tell you about

that but it wouldn't let you do anything

about that you have our last known lock

status fuel level as well as our average

consumption now scrolling down again we

have that dashboard we can click over to

there you can see the car status fuel

level distance to empty that same sort

of information right there along with

your odometer average speed and your

trip meters 1 & 2 you can also see if

there any vehicle warnings and you can

check status on certain systems like

brake fluid bulb failures time for

service etc now skipping over those two

options we're going to go ahead and go

down here for a little bit you can

actually see where your Volvo is

currently located you can actually get a

map and it will put a little icon right

there that's actually needing to be

zoomed out a little bit because it was

too far zoomed in that's currently where

we're located right there

you can also honk

and flash your cars if you've lost it in

the parking garage or parking lot or

something like that you can honk and

flash the car and you can do this really

from any distance because it's not tied

to the remote control function of course

this is all operating over the cellular

connection that is built into the

vehicle we also have a driving journal

integrated with this so you can see your

past trips as you can see I went from

Camden Avenue in San Jose to Summit Road

in Los Gatos and you can see if I scroll

down that that took 25 minutes it was 20

miles and I used one point two gallons

got sixteen point seven miles per gallon

now if we go back you can also call for

roadside assistance with the system now

before we take a look at this doors and

locks option let's take a look at the

remote control now if you're familiar

with recent volvo products you may

notice that there's a button missing

because many Volvo's over the last few

years have had a little I button right

down here that allowed you to check the

status of the volvo as far as the last

time this remote control contacted the

volvo so you could hit the i button and

it would tell you whether or not the car

was locked as far as this remote

remembered this is very similar to that

only this is again operating over the

cellular telephone network so you can do

this from anywhere so I can go ahead and

click here says that updated two minutes

ago the car was unlocked because we're

sitting in the car logically right now

and down here at the bottom it says it

is contacting your Volvo checking your

Volvo status and then it will update

tell you whether or not it's currently

locked and since the status hasn't

changed since two minutes ago it is

currently unlocked we can also lock the

car so we can go ahead and click that

lock button the car went ahead and

locked I just heard the lock and now

it's waiting to update the status right

here on this app eventually it will

update does take a few moments for the

car to contact Volvo and then for the

status to get updated right here you can

also click over to doors and you can see

whether the door is tailgate sunroof

etcetera are open or closed on the car

so we click back on over to the lock the

system is probably updated and yep it

has lo updated and it shows the status s

currently locked now one nice feature

about this if you frequently tend to

leave your car unlocked is that you can

actually have it automatically send you

a push notification to your phone or

your iPad or whatever device you're

using if the car remains unlocked for

over a certain period of time we just go

over here to the gear icon and then we

click general and then we click

notifications and here's where we can

choose what we want to be notified about

you can choose to be notified whether

the alarms gone off if the car is

unlocked for more than 30 minutes if the

remote start has been in or out

and whether or not the car has been able

to remote start now that takes us right

on to remote start obviously right over

here we do have the remote start option

we can start and stop the engine you can

also choose how long you want the remote

start to run for or 15 minutes all the

way down to one minute right there of

course I can't test that right now

because the key is in the car but it

does work as you would expect pretty

much the same as a remote start on a

remote control only can do this from

anywhere

now this Volvo on-call app brings census

to the next level because there really

aren't very many onboard navigation and

infotainment systems that also have this

kind of linked telematics system to them

for as many evie is out there offer the

same kind of functionality but in

regular gasoline vehicles there aren't

too many now General Motors does offer

the same kind of functionality with

their General Motors OnStar app you'd

find that in all the current Cadillac

models when it comes to comparisons I

place this Volvo census connect system

second in this category this is behind

BMWs iDrive for me me and aleeah's on

Drive is very fully featured it's also

very easy to use it's very intuitive in

its latest version it's also very very

feature-rich now of course we don't have

built-in cell modem functionality in BMW

idrive like we do get in this Volvo

census system so that means you do have

to have your parrot two smartphone right

here like this with a system in order to

enable those data services now the

flipside of that on the BMW idrive side

is that we do have a system that is a

little bit more mature than this it's

been in the market a little bit longer

and that really shows in the level of

polish as well as the level of

responsiveness that we see in that

particular system now compared to a DS

MMI system I found this system easier to

use it's also more fully featured we

don't have the same kind of screen

resolutions going on or the same kind of

screen dimensions going on that we do in

a DS MMI but I found the functionality

of the system a little bit superior I

also like the fact that you don't have

to take your hands off the steering

wheel in order to navigate because you

can do almost everything with this

scroll wheel and enter button right over

here on the steering wheel that you can

on the center console now when you're

comparing this to Mercedes it depends on

which command system you're talking

about versus the older command system in

products like the mercedes-benz e-class

the GLK etc this is definitely ahead of

that in both feature functionality as

well as ease of use if you're talk about

the current generation of Mercedes

command it's a little bit below this one

I actually find this particular system a

little bit easier to deal with it's also

a little bit more intuitive and the apps

are definitely snappier with these

online connected apps

then the current generation of Mercedes

command so overall I do put Volvo

sensors connect my number two in this

particular segment if online connected

infotainment systems are your thing

definitely check this out check out BMWs

iDrive I would put Cadillacs cue number

three in this segment now because it is

very easy to use but it's definitely not

as fully featured as the system
