Emily: We got to get out of here.

Right now, we have a big storm coming in.

We got to get the equipment off the ice.

Narrator: Captain shawn pomrenke is on a rescue mission.

Shawn: You don't know if it's gonna come, go, stay,

What it's gonna do.

So instead of losing all of our mining gear,

We're gonna go and get it pulled off,

Get it off the ice before it falls away.

Narrator: Mr. Gold's been on pace to get the ounces needed

To complete his down payment on the tomcod claim.

But one big, bad storm could wipe out his whole operation.

Even though I need a couple more big paydays to make my goal,

I can't risk losing everything.

The ice was thin at the beginning of the season,

And with the warmer weather, it's getting worse now.

This storm is a recipe for disaster.

Ice has been pretty sketchy this year.

You get high salt winds, it picks it up

And blow it off the beach, and then it doesn't hold.

And if it's not holding, you got to get your stuff off the ice,

Otherwise you won't be mining anymore.

Narrator: There are already minefields, even before the storm lands.

We're gonna go ahead and keep our speed up

'cause if we hit some overflow, we want to have enough speed

To make it through it.

Narrator: Warmer temperatures cause the ice to thin,

Allowing seawater to seep through the cracks.

Heavy snowfall adds even more pressure from above,

Causing it to buckle.

And the storm surge can shove the ice against the shore,

Breaking it up or blowing it out to sea.

There is quite a bit of overflow.

It's getting late in the season, so to make that happen,

We're gonna have to hunker down and get that gold.

Narrator: After putting in a bid to purchase claim 16,

Vernon is still short the gold to pay for it.

So today, the skipper is throwing caution to the wind.

Vernon: Nothing comes easy when it comes to gold mining.

We need more ounces. There's no way around it.

As long as there's ice out there, no matter how thin,

We're going mining, storm be damned.

Now hopefully this beast just fires right up.

We got the storm coming.

It could come out and break the ice off and take us out.

I know the guys down at tomcod, I heard this morning,

They're all hitting the shore.

Emily: We got a blizzard hitting us tonight,

So we're just racing to get a couple dives in

Before the season might effectively be over.

Narrator: ...Emily riedel is trying to get in her last licks.

It's calm right now, but the weather's gonna

Start building here in a few hours.

We don't have a lot of time,

But we're on a spot with some gold.

We've got to suck up as much of it as we can

Before we've got to chip the stuff out of the ice

And get it safely to shore.

I'm seeing some really good colors.

Narrator: ...Emily finally found success

Back on her home turf of claim 14.

Now she's racing to make up for lost time to grab the ounces

Needed to prep her growing fleet for summer,

The newly frozen ice is dangerously fragile and thin.

We just lost everything in a blink of an eye.

It's always two steps forward, and one step back.

We should have packed up and went home like I said.

Today, we're gonna talk about the gear.

There's not one thing that you can do without for ice mining,

And there is a lot, lot of gear,

And everything will give you problems.

First on the list is the ice auger,

Essential piece of equipment, usually $450 waste of money.

We just bought the [bleep] thing.

Next piece of gear --

The chipper.

The biggest thing to remember

Is keep this wristband on your wrist.

I don't know how many times I've lost my chipper in the ocean.

Well, there goes my [bleep] day.

So my operation is very simple. It's two buildings on the ice.

The communication shack over here is where we all hang out.

Brad: Weather's nice. It's sunny, it's warm.

Kris: How would you know? You're in the [bleep] shack.

I was outside --

And we can see all our problems

Because I have a big window right in front.

Brad: There's a fire in the motor shack.

It would suck to lose the tent.

We could lose everything if we stay out here too long.

But we'll bring our sluice box in and do a cleanup

And see if our gamble paid off.

Kris: Okay, well, this is it.

Whatever gold we get here right now

Jenny: Jenny is diving today.

It's my mom's suit.

It's all beat-up.

Vernon: Both jenny and gary --

I think they got their love for the quest for gold

From their mother.

She was quite the miner.

When she was 9 years old, seeing her mother

Get dressed up in a wet suit

And go out on this lake in california

That had ice floating around in it,

She said she was impressed with her mom back then,

Thinking, "geez, look what my mom is doing."

You know, she was quite proud of her mom.

She just reflected on that this morning.

She said, "now I'm doing the same thing."

Well, yeah. Jenny, you are.

Jenny, how you feeling?

Jenny: Uh, ready to get that gold.

Ready to take it home for my kids.

I do all this for them.

Yeah, I was really nervous about letting these dives happen

'cause we had these blizzards forecast.

But, you know, we really desperately needed the ounces.

So I took a big risk to stay out,

And I think we're gonna be happy

With the gold that we're making this cleanup.
