[Music]

quite know all right I guess

what is this place the hospital of the

Little Sisters Engineers how on earth do

I get here

you were hurt in a bombing or nothing

serious just a little conquer our the

RAF GMAC then it's all over those planes

are taking part in a victory parade I

wish she could be down there with them

what is his name Thurston Allen Thurston

he had a lot to do with all that

I think why do you think that I'm sure

he'd have found me somehow if it were

alive but nobody knows where you were

we don't even know your name Susan Anton

foster from New York and Kansas why

these New York paper cutting we found in

your bag the tribute is secrecy General

Eisenhower has said the but for the

secret mission of General Mark Clark and

his fellow officers and they conferred

with friendly French officers in a

lonely house on the North African coast

the subsequent military landings could

not have been effective without a much

heavier loss of lives that was the

beginning alway do you know something

about it I don't know perhaps you'd like

to tell me started in this crew who

lived there I was staying there with my

hand she's married to a Frenchman

yurei the sculptor when he left France

they set up a studio in viscri I used to

like working in it I remember I was

modeling ahead

[Music]

Parador mam'selle but since III I think

I should go to the house of dr. Craig

with these things for madam I miss you

do vague ok honor

mom said we'll be alone in the house

[Music]

[Music]

I drink upon it you move I'll shoot in

that case I won't move put that money

down

look I'm French Messiah I've got to get

away I'm being sensible I'm sure you are

I said put that money down I'm not

fooling

perhaps I better introduce myself Alan

Thurston 17s Lance there's a Tommy I'm

sure little off your bearings

I certainly am Dorothy got knocked out

way back a nut sprint Dorothy Dorothy

Lamour my tank how interesting

and now I'll found the police I thought

my way too easily in a prison ship but

after I was give her up class ring and

she had to put into a yes I got away is

that true

you've only got my word for it I know a

hideout in Algiers that's another story

anyhow the French police nabbed me

brought me here and stuck me in a ruddy

great fort I've just escaped you know I

think I believe you

it's decent dope you wouldn't be fatter

can you the reason why

alright I'll buy why no one but a

British should be seen dead in such a

dance silly mustache I thought

everything bigger and better came from

America now listen you mind if I listen

sitting down or are you gonna sing the

star-spangled banner

you're all in they've been treating you

badly no no I'm not it's thoughtful of

somebody Oh surely the French

authorities wouldn't harm an intern

British officer doesn't entirely a

matter for the French doctor Melina

comes into it

who's he her doctor is a prominent

member of the armistice Commission he's

here to promote cultural relations

between the Germans and the French

German idea of making it followed talk

mr. forget to feed him and then let him

watch someone else having a jolly good

meal nice people here I'll get you

something to eat no I better go easy at

first I would appreciate a cigarette

I've only got American cigarettes do you

deign to smoke those surrounding this as

well so your Gerais American easy yes

and Kansas City how do you know that and

you lose gets around even in prison say

what did you come here for to find me

well to begin with I've got to bribe my

way to Algiers and takes money you're

crazy you're having a chance

so it appears pounds are found since

what does the Fox deal make a break I'll

go to earth

he goes to earth come on I'll bring an

escaped prisoner has a criminal offense

mullah one catch your flight get in

there old school tie here take this you

might need it

okay listen he [ __ ] absolutely no

faster and jerk as he saw and keeping

their doors right only birthday and it

was I've always on crack you live in an

EC will you speak more slowly

Unicom prompt path has escaped there's

nobody here but me it is possible you

are mistaken you can't do this I'll

complain to the authorities

this is the house of mr. Dooley a mr.

Dewey is a Frenchman and Madame Giry is

an American event so mr. Dewey is a

Frenchman even make it's our shot follow

me you can't get away with this

Mademoiselle I quite agree they can't

get away with it all tale for two teat

caribou on a mouse you get quite right

miss foster please accept my sincere

apologies well thank you very much

mister I'm dr. Miller

what a charming house i admire miss you

do lacework intensely i guess you

thought i was behaving like an idiot I'm

afraid I lost my temper with the Sgt the

French can be annoying they get so

excited without any reason yes but I

can't imagine why they picked on this

house oh well it's not unnatural

the prisoner has escaped and if he did

their duty to wreak a train no doubt he

was hungry you've had yourself I see no

now that was my aunt's she had a glass

of milk before she went up well and

she's been out for some time all evening

oh why oh nothing the ring off the glass

is still a bit in this atmosphere would

be drive within a few minutes how very

clever of you to think of that oh just

occur to me that the fellow might have

come here without your knowledge

no thank you you were upstairs when the

soldiers note yes I thought you took so

long to answer the door

would it be impertinent to ask you what

lipstick you use not at all

it's called New York why do you want

some for your wife oh no no I'm not

married

Medicaid German women despise such

things don't they

I know so little about women for

instance I had the trial dish idea that

lipstick always left a mark on the end

of a cigarette so it does but when I was

smoking that cigarette I wasn't wearing

lipstick I see you applied it later how

was I to know who is at the door which

would also account for your delay in

answering of course of course

thank you for receiving me and you

repelling the invasion its foster a word

of advice yes it is dangerous to meddle

in something you know nothing about such

as politics I've no intention of doing

so good as a matter of fact I'm leaving

tomorrow for Algiers but ideas to

arrange a passage home

ah then if we meet again it will

probably be in your United States after

the Peace German peace

well peace it's the same thing I'll be

today

[Music]

care to join me thanks I will coming

with the hair doctors given me an

appetite taught me generally has the

reverse effect are you serious about

going back to the state yes I'm gonna

join the wax no one woman's arm

exhilarate core mmm-hmm I want to get in

this war and would interest the head

doctor

I handled him rather well don't sing

didn't fool information all right I

don't want to catch me just want to

follow me follow you where to Algiers

why I got a Pinter camera a camera whose

camera listen then hide out of my knee

now cheers I shared with a fellow

countryman of yours

Tex Murray never heard of him no no not

likely - he's dead but before he died he

hid his camera and Maritza's flat ribs

are the actress yes he made me promise

to get he'll do the thing and take it

away

why all this fuss about a camera this

isn't the camera it's what's in it

apparently was used by one of Miller's

men to photograph a map belonging to us

not just an ordinary map something very

special

fortifications maybe no it's just a

deserted stretch of coastline nothing

there except a lonely looking house that

doesn't sound very important according

to Maya is the most vital thing that

ever happened to your country and mine

anyway he managed to swipe the thing

from Mullis man then he slipped up he

called on his girlfriend maritza yeah

nezam he must have happened he

discovered they were on to him and

dumped a camera in Maritza's Bureau and

maritza and she doesn't know anything

about it if she did she'd sell it to

Muller she'd sell her own grandmother

someone who doesn't know where it is

nobody knows what I do and he hopes I

lead him to it how are you gonna get

around that

well if I could trail Muller along

someone else might get the camera

nothing doing

I'm not getting mixed up in any funny

business so damn serious business more

serious than you now oh who do you think

I am matter Harry said you wanted to get

into the warden - I do want to get into

the war I'll get into it my own way

I know the easy way put on a smart

uniform and flirt with the office that's

not so I'll wash dishes and scrub floors

but what's the use to standing up

against the wall and getting shot

okay can't this pull your chin in no

one's going to Street you going home to

your wax

I better get going well let me give you

a piece of parting advice you're being

followed to shave off that mustache let

it show you up a mile away

good day I'm getting rather attested and

kiss you for another of those Yankee see

miss what with that you wouldn't

I'll get your packet for nothing

[Music]

contact me cafe to group consider

yourself kissed the impedance of the man

it sounded so fantastic yet strange

things happen in a world of war vital he

called it vital to England and to my own

United States I had a hunch that

Thurston could be trusted

so next day when I travel to Algiers oh

no man and Suzanne oh oh you you what

luck together we shall paint the town

pink

you mean bread oh I do not care we shall

painted something we'll have to be quick

about it because I'm only gonna fix up

my reservations reservations that's why

I married going home to join up oh yes

you are the lucky one here we wait

tonight we dine at the MIDI finale I

don't think I can make it only I'll bet

you mast you cannot walk out of my life

without one gone farewell please okay

then tonight at eight o'clock I shall be

waiting the little boss is watching you

on me

he's been on the train all the way from

this crew maybe it's trying to protect

me from young and charming French

officers Oh in that case I shall return

the compliment and protected from that

little German things come on I can

manage on sides look at his nibs I think

it's getting impatient moment yeah I

feel cutting all about you

Porter until tonight Hotel mit Durrani

France Hotel de France nationality

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

and among the hacemos exhausting

[Music]

but on them within sure no asking funds

the system stuff yes

why well I what do you mean why are you

asking here for one mr. Saxton because

he asked me to when few days ago

we're a bit so do you know him or don't

you the head yes perhaps no okay that's

how I feel all the men who come Yemen

with that do not give us their name and

when I do it is usually let you sleep

perhaps your mr. Thurston to me it's

just another mystery

Oh

battlin mother would describe her mr.

husband well he's Oh skip it

doesn't matter the middle look I gotta

find mr. Thurston it's very important I

think you do know him

oh boy say mr. Thurston is not a man for

you he's searching for by the police no

that isn't interned officer nee escaped

did he tell you that well the police are

after him yes but for other reasons did

you lend him any money

yeah took mine too but he was so

charming Mizpah that morality can win

Bobby no Gallo and so he persuaded me to

skip that what happened next

now I work for him I cook for him I

steal for him still

what do you steal whatever he likes

here the clever one you understand I

merely carry out his orders

thank you very much bye

[Music]

matter legend do its no job for a woman

oh I did all right for a beginner I'll

improve it training I'm gonna keep

moving

this cameras vitally important both our

countries Italy definitely

and you're gonna develop the film or

destroy it aren't you absolutely when

you're wrong all the way mr.

stiff-upper-lip person if you think I'm

gonna hand it over to you you're crazy

well after what I just heard I wouldn't

trust you around the corner with a phony

nickel hold on maybe it's important to

maybe it isn't in any case I'm handing

it straight over to the American Consul

you and your no job for a woman why the

only job a man can do that a woman can

is grow a mustache like that one

not enough to go round I had no idea

there were so many huh this is the whole

of the armistice Commission here you

will see them all we do not find it too

unpleasant how could I find anything

unpleasant tonight Bob oh yes the I'm an

apt pupil you could have done better

yourself that is very unfair you would

like to dance

Suzanne will you promise me something

depends what it is for the first time

will you promise to believe what I tell

you but it's really true I love you

Suzanne do you believe that

ask you so then will you marry me

but you are quite fun of me aren't you

a hurry

why did you come to my home can you ask

permission to model your head a famous

person you know I know also that you are

lying the wrong way there is something

behind all this you had better tell me

the truth I don't know what you're

talking about

well I I don't want to be mixed up in

politics you understand perfectly

neither do I now will you excuse me

please

[Music]

miss Foster yes it is desire to supply

some information good to I know they

will kind of step into the car are you

trying to arrest me but certainly not we

are merely asking you to companies to

headquarters I'm sorry I got an

appointment in my hotel in that case we

will talk you there and we will

coordinate headquarters on the week

I don't mean I get good evening Fraulein

this isn't French please headquarters

who suggested that you were going to

police headquarters as men in the car

how foolish this is headquarters of the

German armistice Commission we are

obliged by your Curtiss in visiting us

this way please

Thank You mr. Foster not at all sit down

please

forgive me for being so engrossed in

this childish thing I've twenty-four

different puzzles of the map of Algeria

you see it's an easy way of learning

drug nothing

I adore jigsaw puzzles I'm sure you do

it's an excellent training for solving

puzzles of a more important nature I

hate to interrupt your pleasures hair

doctor but was it too plain jigsaw

puzzles I was forced to come here

ask oh these police are so enthusiastic

about technical offences and mine was oh

just a slight misstatement on your

registration form at the hotel I'm sure

we come soon put it straight tell me

miss Foster did you see your counselor

today about your passage yes everything

is being fixed up thank you splendid and

I suppose it's like old women you did

some last-minute shopping now tried to

but there nothing very much in the shops

then nothing exciting happened to you at

all nothing at all I spend most of the

day resting in my hotel it wasn't

exciting to dine with a man who's so

much in love with you captain the launch

was a very dear friend and yet as you

Americans say you walked out on him I

had a headache oh I'm sorry I hope it's

better now

what did you do with the camera what

camera

the one I believe you stole from Rich's

apartment well of all the foolish ideas

it's you are being foolish miss Foster

I had not hoped for such an obvious

recognition you know the penalty for

having a spy named Ellen but you can I'm

glad this physician can Arnold a hot

[ __ ] average be known Schulich yummy so

let's get on all right so I did visit

maritza this girl minute at me and she's

absolutely innocent she lied

that's enough collaborations the new

order

isn't that what you called finally do

not tell me you went to mother it's us

my mind why did you go there

look here dr. Miller I'm an American

citizen in a friendly country miss

foster you've lied to me twice

you lied that night when I came to

mysterious house and you fly today about

every single movement you made you don't

seem to realize that you're meddling in

metals far too dangerous for you for the

last time why did you go to Marissa's

apartment I demand the truth and I

demand to be allowed to contact the

American Consul the whole means

you'll be no more successful them and

you try to telephone him from your hotel

you see how useless it is to lie he went

to Maritza's to steal a camera you do

not it yes from right says you went to

the cafe to go to meet an Englishman

called Thurston now don't deny that I

have the proprietors outside now the

question is did you find the camera and

if so did you give to Thurston or to the

charming French captain no later we

shall see

excuse me please

alright dad Shari what is happened I've

landed myself in the most awful mess ah

don't you worry I will see that you get

safely out if I would be too sure miss

foster the French had a flair for

appearing brave captain the Lord I've

sent for you because you're a friend of

this lady correct and I demand her

immediate release she has chosen to

withhold certain information

she's therefore being detained on

suspicion this also applies to our

intimate friends you mean I mean it's

for the lady to decide do not tell him

anything on my account Susanne

hello begins in response surgeon get out

of it - aria yeah it's the duty of my

department to prevent collaboration with

the enemy

mr. foster is an American my government

is on friendly terms with America mine

is not hello genealogy

I said dr. o'meara keep our CC on the

buzz of his secret will be on turn the

color barrier bikinis be on American

capitaine de long we never see your

commanding officer's place you under

arrest

he's sitting in escort at once if you

think by involving him you can fire

involved no one you involved yourselves

we have a call to make miss Foster

please come along

but I'm editor Ani

pretty about the captain he loses

commission of course

the true test of friendship is when we

are in trouble we like our friends to

rally round then don't be miss Foster

it is pleasant to observe that one of

your friends is rallying round this very

moment don't get excited

it's only mr. Thurston

I rather expected him to be somewhere

about

I also have staunch friends in fact

there's one of them waiting to pick up

your mr. first many arrives to rescue

friendships a wonderful thing

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

what you're doing here

utmost importance I'm compelled to ask

you a few questions then please be brief

I'm very tired and I want to go home

thank you miss Foster would you sit down

please

[Music]

would you be good enough to tell me if

there was a camera in your apartment yes

oh yes of course I was but it was don't

know whose was it

no idea so many friends call on me I

found it in the drawer my bureau and you

left it there certainly I expect the

owner will come along too came it I see

what is always to do it this is faster

dad's apartment his money yeah she was

in the drawing room alone hello

criminal is the hideout of every thief

permission I was asleep when I did least

made him coffee for him when he gets

back I'll do with that thank you well I

did my way okay

and yet you let him go out do you know

that the police are watching every

entrance to the casbah watching for

Thurston if you were mine man I'd have

taken his clothes away I'd have tied him

to look after himself he doesn't come

back if they kick him I swear on you I

[Music]

don't you I lied about him

did you I'm sorry none of the crystal

that's alright forget about it you do

not understand with it there's no chance

for me they could never have been

nothing if I had met him back in town

but they would not denied it so much

you were happy there he gave her body

was happy in Paris there I would like

you when the Germans came I was

frightened a man brought me here

he left me I had no money I know it's

not easy to live in Algiers without

money

this substance different he wants

nothing from me but he allows me to help

and if I can help her gallant soldier to

return to fight the Germans then I do

have partners coming with it when did

you have when hottest once again I shall

go back what you see this is exactly

like the real one Perry laughed and gave

it to me he said for lack of it and one

day you will take it back to your

beloved points to the plane they were

good for

what tree you would laugh at me I

wouldn't laugh at your event in the her

Godfather is a tree when I was small I

carved my initials on it until a

gendarme came and chased me away

and he wanted to see that please put it

there I don't know why but I want to see

if it's there

just promise me the time I love him very

much

that is per unit for me but he's not in

love with me nor I with him anyone was

there where love is concerned you can

fool a man you couldn't perhaps fool

yourself but you cannot fool another

woman come on what's this an armistice

you are the crazy one where have you

been you know the police are searching

for you everywhere I don't trust my

puppet morning Kansas sleep well

beautifully thank you did you know I

can't do that I said coffee

cheese bananas for goods received well

I'm not look at me you look fine

I can't live pajamas on an evening dress

but I get you something oh yes please

uh-huh hey Danny nice kid

incidentally you had us both pretty

worried why did you go out I had to I

wanted to get some chemicals to develop

that film if you're gonna get into the

camera are you still mad at me no I'm

not still mad at her

Candace when we get to work

[Music]

you

it's come on marvelously come on never

look at it

yep tens is this one this is an ordinary

map nothing unusual about that see that

dot it's like a fly to me it's a house a

lonely house on a desolate stretch of

cars now why on earth shouldn't want to

be interested in their guests as good as

mine minutes I think I recognize that

stretch of coast here it is mother

we're off peppers are now

[Music]

take a look

[Music]

you were perfect lending b-24 breakers

don't get too high how close can you

take us about four or five hundred yards

I can see the house we better report to

general o'clock

[Music]

a lonely house somewhere on kathas our

house of mystery and brooding silence

get it for an air of strange expectancy

plans were complete a band of gallant

men General Mark Clark his offices

British and American a handful of loyal

French all risking their lives to reach

the rendezvous for one brief hour

together an hour in which to plan the

great invasion of North Africa

a light here can be seen 20 miles out to

sea no Monsieur it is a great

responsibility but the Germans are

everywhere

they search yeah they search so darn

hard they miss what's under their nose

go ahead don't be afraid the friend

should have not afraid of the Germans

but you're brave officers in the royal

offices of France it is for their lives

and the fade those boys aren't worrying

about

[Applause]

no sign of any light sure we got the

right place that's the house all right

up there on the cliff you can see the

path leading up to telling out two gone

wrong take a look for me third with you

right up I'll take the responsibility be

assured I had no other thought for I

know that when I light this candle

I light the flame it will drive the

enemy out of Africa a flame that will be

carried across the waters and across the

continent of Europe to the very heart of

Berlin there she goes all right skipper

let's get going

see okay get a char skipper we'll manage

[Music]

and so they completed the first stage of

an audacious undertaking an undertaking

that Muller was determined to defeat

whatever the cost

[Music]

but quick the outside hola

you must come away quick not a help I'm

sorry right now don't argue get away

while you can

[Music]

[Music]

good evening doctor good evening I was

expecting you this time good it's the

American lady expecting me too she left

some time ago

don't ask me to tell you where she's

going I hate telling lies mm-hmm I'm

sure you do

but I feel certain she will come back

what makes you so certain no lady ever

travels far without her handbag oh I

don't know

she's probably traveling light come come

now mr. Thurston surely you can do

better than that would it be too much to

ask where that door leads to oh it's my

bathroom we have every modern

convenience here would you care to take

a look at it I'd be obliged if you would

open it for me

with it you can take your hand out of

your pocket won't be necessary to shoot

anybody how disappointing you think we

could sit down and I could talk to you I

know means he promised Lee speaking this

is most irregular

I quite agree we are enemies mr. Furst

conducting a campaign against each other

in a country which is friendly to us

both well they have shade more friendly

to me even to you of course if you

insist on breaking international law but

even that could be overlooked if if if

you supplied me with an important piece

of information I'm in a position to

insist you know all right what is it we

believe that certain American and

British officers are now on board an

enemy submarine lurking off the cursed

Tamra you stole will unconvinced tell me

what I've got to know I want that camera

to be awkward you now seems to be a toss

out between my country and my neck

My dear fellow this has nothing to do

with your country it's a matter which

concerns America I see oh well that puts

an entirely different complexion on

things if I give you the camera will you

consider the interview close more than

that I will forget that I've ever seen

you

okay it's a deal you're the first

sensible Englishman I'd ever make you

know your way out I think I expected

[Music]

/ anxiety is a serious fault mister says

something wrong something is very wrong

please sit down

what happened to the film the film ah I

burnt it lets her a foolish of you isn't

it it would have been even more foolish

to leave it lying around and we must

rely on your memory must be what was on

that film I've quite forgotten I beg of

you to remember

please mr. Thurston try to remember

before I can't ten it does make sense my

dear sir if you shoot me you'll never

find out unless I found out very quickly

their knowledge is of no use to me

one-eyed Ross the chapel's of the

photographs as you're well aware your

lake friend mr. Murray [ __ ] too

come along now Thurston what was on that

film a met wasn't it

that's right a map

and therefore I brought my geography

free

don't you think you're taking rather a

risk with that thing I've got a lot of

pals around here for

[Music]

five you're halfway to death sassman

while the spices help but typically

sling for that six

I seem to remember one that you might

think not quite so still it's seven

something about an angel above bringing

destruction to evil below eight

[Music]
