I always want to build a piece of art,

but I do have a timeline and a budget.

We're going to build a futuristic

glass car out of a pinto.

[ horn honks ]

[ whistles ] scaring myself.

The car was more rusted over than I thought.

What we get ourselves into this time, alex?

So we basically fabricated everything.

I wanted to make a honeycomb here,

but that took longer than anticipated.

That's toasty. That's...

Got body film in it.

Jolene: We have a tight deadline with this, it's four weeks.

We're falling behind on this.

We've said we're going to be there,

and if we're not there, then it's kind

of a failure, I guess.

Chad: We bought the car cheap so I sprung for an engine,

and it does not fit.

It's a backwards step on a big build.

Jolene: We're out of time with this build.

If we don't finish a car in a set amount of time,

then it's going to trickle down on the other builds.

If we start running a business like that,

we're not going to be here.

[ bleep ] me.

The car's gonna be too wide.

The rear ends, not going to fit in there.

Have I done all this work for nothing?

so the tires are going to hit on the square tubing

when the tires go up inside.

So it has to be cut out.

We'll set the rear end up in there

and, you know, somehow it might shrink.

I'm going to make two incisions up the quarter panels

up the side that square tubing,

and then we're going to pull that in and see what happens.

The wheel wells are resting on top of the tires.

We've got to fix that. We can't run the car like that.

We just burn the tires out.

As you roll down the street,

we've got to have space there.

So we're going to have to...

The solution is to make it wider.

But there's a little thing called a porta power.

It will push and it will pull.

We've got it close enough that I'm hoping that we can bend

the quarter panels out further than they have to be.

Alex has a porta power.

We're going to bring it over and we'll try it.

That's we're going to do.

There's so much more to do. You know?

We need to build the front end from scratch,

prep the roof, the doors and the glass and then install.

We need to do the body work,

the dash, the interior, paint it, everything.

Jolene: I don't know if we're ever going to finish this car.

It's really stretched out,

and everybody is getting tired,

and it's it's hard to see the light

at the end of the tunnel with this build.

Man: What am I going to make the front end look like?

I was going to make it pointy,

but we got a square ass end on it,

we got all these different shapes

on this car so far right now.

And I want to keep it that way, sort of.

I want to keep it that way and nice.

Everything's a shape.

And as we're getting behind,

I still don't want to compromise what we're doing

and what we're going for, you know?

It's a hard thing.

he wants to play with the front end some more.

It does make me nervous that with every creative decision

that he makes, it's taking time and it's going to take money.

Cutting the headlight like doors out of it,

it may put a new face on it.

They'll take the pinto out of it.

I'm kind of changing my plan a little bit.

And that's not always the best thing to do

when you're in motion.

I want to make it look like what I see in my brain, I guess.

Yeah, my brain told me to build it a different way.

What I'm gonna do is I'm going to come in

and I'm going to make a grill.

I'm going to make a square looking shape.

I'm thinking like headlight over and then down.

So that's going to be the face.

As I get looking at the front end,

what I'm going to do is I'm going to build a box

to fit that area,

and then I'm going to french it.

It frenched the back.

Why don't I french all the front?

Long as you cut it and put something inside of it,

you have frenched it.

So I'm going to get colton the cut the roof out

so we can replace it all the glass.

I'm going to throw a lot of glass at this car.

We're going to make glass doors, a glass roof, the glass back.

Cut that all around that edge. See them?

Colton is a work horse.

Not much thought, but a work horse.

I do not want it haggled and jangled

like someone got in a car accident and they got tore up.

chad: We're got get most of this fabrication done

even before we start thinking about the glass.

now that the roof is cut, I'm going to make a frame

to hold the glass.

And it's going to look good.

This is the lift where the glass is going to set.

This is a ledge and how thick the glass is going to be.

Maybe a little thicker, I'm not sure yet.

We don't know.

And as I put that in there,

that'll give this this metal, this body metal here shape.

Also, it gives me a place to attack it

on the inside construction on the bottom side.

So we're we're welding the car right back together

the way it was, maybe a little bit better.

Who knows?

So the glass to sit down in here,

and that's how thick that we're hoping to be.

No, no.

Now we just need the glass.

Jolene: The glass is a huge unknown for this car.

We haven't played with glass before.

We haven't played with gullwing doors on actuators.

It's scary at this point of the season.

We're pushing the deadlines.

Then it's really going to, you know,

jeopardize the final build and whether

we're going to be able to fit it into the schedule.

It's going to be cooler than that.

Chad: Already made the frame for the door.

Now, what I have to do is make the shelf

for the glass to lay on.

Aaron is not coming in today, not feeling well.

He's had a few health issues, and don't really want

to get into his private business,

but we are missing his work.

If I had aaron, we could show you

how far much further ahead would be

because he could be on the other door while making this side.

Aaron.

We are man down, and everybody is tired out.

We're making way more than I thought,

but let's face it, it's on me.

My goal today is to have two gullwing doors.

That's my goal today.

If I can get this all around it,

there's no reason I can't fix stick hinge in.

In fact, the hinges make that door go whoop.

You know what I mean? There's no reason I can't.

They've got the square tubing all put on

and got it all ground off and face fairly decent.

While here I have is a door hinge

that aaron bring in it's a nice one.

As we got the doors in here, we got a big gap going on.

I can take and put that hinge in there any place I want to.

Those are just door hinges.

And what I'm going to say is, why not?

That's what they're for, opening and shutting doors.

And then we'll take a screwdriver, open the top on up

we're going to aaron's check out the rand's farm.

We're going to take a look around to see

if there's any glass we can use for this car.

Aaron: Yeah, there could be plexiglass.

For sure there some nylon product here.

You got to have those things on the farm,

so we often can keep it around.

This reminds me, - when I was a kid. You know that?

All kinds of bends around and fruit and vegetables.

Fresh vegetables everywhere.

I grew up on this farm.

Planted a lot of broccoli in my day.

We've been here since 1945.

The name randsland brand probably started

sometime in the late '80s.

We grow 500 acres of broccoli a year.

We're one of the biggest producers

in eastern north america now.

Show me around a little bit, man.

I wanna see what you got.

You go down that side and I'm going to go down the side.

Maybe -- maybe we'll find some.

Broccoli is very high in vitamins c, d and e.

I try and eat at least one head of broccoli every day.

That's to keep my fiber intake up.

Styrofoam, aluminum.

That's irrigation fittings, scales.

We've got to keep on the hunt here.

My preferred way to eat broccoli is with dip.

It helps neutralize the flavor roughly a little bit.

There are vegetables out there

that are a little bit tastier than broccoli,

but if you get the ranch dip going,

you're going to be good with the broccoli.

Oh, that's a sheet of lexan

-are you serious? -Yeah.

Lexan is a glass. It's shatterproof.

It does not break.

Race cars use it.

It's there for the using I guess.

Exactly.

What I'm thinking mostly I'm going

to make the lexan, use for the doors

because the doors I do not, you know,,

with the with the gullwing thing there,

I do not want anything to break or shatter.

There's is going to be a lot of pressure

on the doors is going up, I'm thinking.

It's like a kid in a candy store.

Look at that now, would you?

So any time that we don't hit that deadline

and we extend it, it's adding pressure

to the remaining builds.

You know what would fix the front end for me?

To blown lenses that fit it.

And blow some bubbles in the kitchen oven.

This will be the first one I've ever tried

to make a lens for a car.

Chad: I can just imagine being a designer at,

you know, a big dealership where you draw out something

and you think, you know, your car's the best or whatever.

And then you get a whole bunch of people judging you,

same whether it is or it isn't or it isn't or whatever.

But as we're going through this car right here,

I'm judging it the whole way.

I could be the worst critic.

[ laughs ]

my dream was never to have a business.

It was never to have a business.

My garage was built behind my house

so I could do whatever I want to do

whenever I wanted to do it.

I feel like having a breakdown down sometimes,

you know what I mean? Because there's so much pressure on...

Oh, no. As I get looking at it, it's so short.

Like it's there's this small little car.

I do not like it small.

But the back has been lengthened six inches.

I think that would make up for some.

Let's roll out doors before I start tearing it all apart,

because I might cut something

or weld something to it you know what I mean?

Sometimes you need a larger perspective.

That thing is low in the back.

Every time chad changes his mind on the build,

it's adding time.

It causes a big problem because we've taken on

all these bills and we've, you know,

said we're going to do it.

So, yeah, there's no no borrowing time

when the weather comes.

Chad: We've got a couple of headlights we can put on there.

The front end just feels too short.

Here are some big old boobies.

Jolene: When they go that way or the other?

What way? That way?

-Yeah. -Why would you go that way?

Isn't that where the glass is going to go with the car?

No, make the car longer. I'll weld them on there.

-Oh. -Oh, my god.

I don't think so.

You know what would fix the front end for me?

Two blow lenses that fit it.

Put a lens on this side and a lens on the side,

bring it up that far.

And blow some bubbles in the kitchen oven.

Got to do it.

Last year, we blew a huge bubble in an industrial building

with professionals that knew how to run the oven.

this time we're scaling it down,

but we're doing it in our own oven in the house.

That was a good find on that plexiglass right there.

That tanning bed right there, just like that.

Headlights, here we come.

Colton found a tanning bed with some plexiglass in it.

Oh, wow.

We can't use it for the doors or the roof

because it's breakable.

Plexiglass.

But we can blow bubbles out of it.

Plexiglass cost over $300 over a sheet,

so it's a big money saver here.

Aaron has made some frames

for the size and the shape of the headlights.

[ panel beeping ]

so on 375, we're preheating stove.

If you do not cover the hole

and you put the plexiglass on top of this,

when you go to blow the air in it,

it just blows up squarely in the center.

As I put this on, it makes the air

go around the edge, makes it come out round.

That's the trick.

Alright.

On top of that.

So it's a piece of plywood

to hold the plexiglass with a hole in it

and an air check on the bottom of it

with a piece of cardboard over the hole.

When we crank it up, it'll come up so high

and...Say yay or nay.

This is will be the first one I've ever tried

to make lens for a car.

We call cut out the mold.

Hard to believe that's the mold, but that's the mold.

That's the shape that I want this plexiglass to blow up.

We're doing with a different thickness of glass.

We're only dealing with what was in that tanning bed.

And that's what we're going to do with we had.

Let's put in it.

That's going to sit in there perfect, just like that.

So, timer? -Yup. Half hour.

Jolene: Hopefully it works.

It's not a guarantee that we're going

to blow these bubbles and that they're going to

look good and that they're going to fit.

There's a whole lot going on there.

But as we take this off,

The other thing that we learned was when we use the air pick,

we've got to have an air regulator on it.

You can't just turn the nozzle because the air pick,

when you turn it on, it's either on or off.

I'll build a new -- a new button.

we're cooking with gas now.

Let's get in the house and do a bubble.

This round here, - we're not putting the screws

to the plexiglass.

Just put that on and take that on in the back.

We're so close to being done,

We have all the patterns.

So, it's lexan or plexiglass?

Lexan I'm going to try to use

because it's shatterproof.

That glass should be good enough.

I just don't want - to look like the [bleep] windows

are falling in. - They're flat looking, right.

If we get it turn down that corner,

that'll put a lot of tension on that glass,

and that'll make it more sturdy looking.

That's what I'm hoping for. -Yup.

I am. - That's what I'm hoping for.

All the body panels on the car are made under pressure.

That's fine, because I can weld the metal down,

it'll stay there.

But when you put the glass in,

I can't weld the glass in the car.

You have to glue it.

Oh, man. That's heavy. [ laughs ]

it looks good cut.

chad: Now it's time to put the glass in.

The doors are going to be

the main attraction of the car

with the glass in it.

We got all the glass cut.

We only have a couple more days left.

Everybody wants everything perfect.

There's no forgiveness for us here,

so as we put the glass in, we have to make it

fit better than factory glass.

Look at that.

When we're putting glass in car,

we want to make it fit.

This is what will give rigidity to the door

you know what I mean?

Don't you think? -I think it will.

Just go right there.

Hit that little spot.

Good? - Hit that, yup.

I think we get it, paul.

When we push this down here, that stretch,

that glass made that glass twice as strong

as it was laying flat because we've got pressure there.

Now it's going to turn on.

It's going to turn on and go in up there,

so that glass is really under pressure.

We've never made a car with so much glass in it.

As you can see, the glass is round a little bit.

It's got a little bit of roundness to it,

and that's what we wanted.

Now that we know that this works,

I'm sure that the doors can work.

This is the moment of truth.

We know there's lots of pressure on the glass

because of one, two, three, four.

You know what I'm saying?

A lot of pressure on that. It's bent here.

It's bent down there because it goes up like this.

So as I pull these off, we're going to find out --

I'm kind of half nervous -- we're going to find it out

she's still stuck. I'm sure she's stuck.

Look at that. She stayed.

Now, I want to stand this door up.

Wait. There it is. That's good.

It's got nice rigidity to it. You know what I mean?

I can't push the glass in,

and that's the thing that we wanted.

That's what I wanted. I wanted that.

We have to get the car painted

because we haven't got time to try the glue again.

What if we can put something behind it, screw it in?

Great in here where all the bend is

and all the recurvature is, is where we need something.

I'm gonna put something right here and right there.

I got a little hole drilled there,

a little hole drilled there, and hold it there.

So I'm just gonna bend it.

That their tab will hold that down.

That class is not going anywhere with that in there.

We're ready for paint,

but we're nowhere near ready for reveal, if that makes sense.

You know, paint is one thing, but reveal's another.

So there's [bleep] tons

I'm making panels out of wood for the floor of the car.

I'm heading over to my wood shop so that I can use my equipment.

Working out of my home shop is sort of a sweet spot to be.

Everything I need is right at my fingertips.

I started as a little kid in my grandfather's workshop.

I was learning how to drive nails.

First thing I ever built was a birdhouse.

And when I was done, he counted how many

nails I put in.

The grand tally was 253 nails.

[ ominous chord plays ]

a pretty dangerous environment inside of it.

chad: A lot of exotic fast european sports cars

have high impact colors,

and yellows always high impact, and far as I'm concerned.

There's not a lot of yellow cars beaming around.

you're hold the gas tank,

and alex is taking the bracket and putting it through.

This build is taken, it seems like, forever.

I'm really hoping that we get this car done today.

Extra time is extra money.

We put this thing together.

Chad: There's a lot of work left to do.

You have to put the interior in,

you have to clean, put floor in it,

put the dash in. Put the bubbles on,

gas tank, gas knob, you name it.

Just everything, just has to go in.

Hopefully we can get it in.

It's all you know.

Put that gas tank in there.

You're up over two wheel wells to get in the back.

You can't see the holes that you've drilled to bolt

the gas tank down.

It's in. Just let it go.

[ laughter ]

once you get the gas tank in there,

you have to make a spoke from the gas tank

up to the top of the roof,

still fabricating after it's painted.

You know what I'm saying?

[ grunts ]
