Manchester United, by far, are City's biggest enemies.

I still bloody hate City. I hate the fans, I hate their entire atmosphere.

We've gotta beat them under any circumstances.

Derby Day means everything.

Derby Day for me is like Christmas Day.

How much you want City to beat United...

...because of this fierce rivalry.

So it's pretty much all or nothing, you know what I mean?

If Manchester City lose against Manchester United,

and I go in to work...

it's dog's abuse for at least a week.

United might...

be worried that there are now two teams in Manchester,

but there's only really one.

Well, it's not in Manchester, is it?

It's got a Manchester post code, but it's the city of Salford.

It's the border of Trafford.

City to me are just the "noisy neighbors." That's what Fergie used to say.

We're City. We're the best team in the land, in all the world.

Manchester is definitely blue, no question about it.

Don't be silly, Manchester is red.

Beating United, that's... That has to be the best feeling ever.

Priceless.

[narrator] After beating current champions Chelsea,

and after a two-week break for international competition,

City are flying high.

Three more Premier League wins

in which they outscored their opponents by thirteen goals to four.

But if they want to be considered the best team in England and in Europe,

they have to become the best team in their city.

And for many years, that team has been Manchester United.

[man] Derby Day was always...

the number one fixture in the season for this club.

[Steve Bower] I would say, for the blue half of Manchester,

all the time, the Derby is everything...

and it's been a day until the last five, six, seven years,

that City fans have ultimately dreaded.

[crowd cheer]

We cannot forget that club in the last fifteen or twenty years.

Their neighbors were United with Alex Ferguson.

They win every season.

It's totally relevant that City have got the cooler musician fans.

And who've United got? Simply Red?

[narrator] The Red Devils have won a record 20 League titles...

and the prestigious UEFA Champions League three times.

But everything about the rivalry changed on May 13th, 2012.

A day no Mancunian will ever forget.

In the last game of the season,

City had the chance to win the Premier League title.

But if they dropped points against Queen's Park Rangers...

and United won their match against Sunderland...

City would hand another title to United.

United, in their blue away kit,

beat Sunderland thanks to a Wayne Rooney goal.

[commentator] ...through the back post to Rooney who was able to stoop

and nod it into the empty net.

[narrator] Meanwhile, City were struggling,

drawing 2-2, deep into injury time...

on the verge of blowing their best chance of the League title in 44 years.

But then, City striker, Sergio Agüero, did this.

[commentator] Manchester City are still alive here. [screaming] Agüero!

[cheering]

They've just heard the news at the Stadium of Light.

I swear you'll never see anything like this ever again.

I know I won't see in my lifetime again

the goal he scored against QPR to win the League.

I'll never see it again in my life.

If somebody were to give you a million pounds or a million euros,

you wouldn't have been able to describe that moment, how it was going to happen.

It was unbelievable and I think that'll stick in everybody's memory.

[Vincent] Everything collapsed...

and we all jumped on each other. I think fans were doing the same thing.

People were crying, people were...

You know, it was like... you witnessed the end of the world almost

and you were ready to witness the end of the world

and next thing you know you get sent to paradise.

You realize there's a paradise.

[Brian] I think what Sergio Agüero's done for Manchester City is unbelievable.

There's not enough superlatives to give Sergio.

[narrator] Agüero scored the most important goal in City's history.

And he's been the club's leading goal scorer the past three seasons.

[narrator] So far this season, City have not lost a Premier League game.

They also have their sights set on the Champions League.

A season-long competition of the best clubs in Europe.

A trophy they've never won.

[Pep] Europe away is always tough.

we were not able to win one game away.

It's always complicated. Especially for a team with our history in Europe like us.

So that's why it's so important.

[narrator] Last year,

City were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16

by Benjamin Mendes' former team, AS Monaco.

in the Champions League this season.

[narrator] This season, City have won all three games

in their Champions League group including a 2-1 victory at home

over Italian powerhouse and Serie A leader, Napoli.

Next stop, a tougher test... on Napoli's turf.

[commentator] Manchester City are potentially

just ninety minutes of football away from qualifying

for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

They bested Napoli 2-1 at the Eithad a fortnight ago.

A repeat of that win would be just the ticket for Pep Guardiola's men.

but fellow Argentinian, Nicolas Otamendi, a central defender,

has shown that he too can find the net.

I think he's a guy who's improving a lot.

He's a fighter.

And I think, for example, the game in Napoli,

he played really well, like a mature player.

City sit eight points above rivals United, at the top of the table.

John Stones is one of the players who embodies the new philosophy of the club.

A defender, also known for his distribution.

He is already one of the best central defenders in the world

and he will be absolutely top.

for a reported 47.5 million pounds.

Then, the second highest fee in Premier League history.

It was just joy of being here

and working under the manager, with my team mates.

And the start of a new chapter for me as a person and a player.

It's the thing of football, it happens and as I say,

I think, for me personally, I've always got to review it after and...

analyze everything and be self-critical in those situations

cause then you can move on from it and learn from it

in a better way in my opinion.

Guardiola defended his player passionately.

John Stones's performance today? He's been criticized a lot this season.

At the beginning of this season, you saw that he learned a lot,

across that season before.

That's a perfect sign for me so I look at him

and I see a young player that wants to progress.

and this season he's able. I think his personal life in terms of...

and reduce a lot of the mistakes, the defensive mistakes.

will be a test for Stones and the entire City defense.

from the final international break of the year

and for Manchester City that means a meeting with Leicester.

Kompany and Stones are paired in central defense,

but after two minutes City nearly lose one of them.

[commentator] ...and Vardy goes down under Vincent Kompany's

mistimed challenge.

Just two minutes into the game,

Claude Puel thinks it should be a red card.

The body language of the referee suggests yellow

and he already had the yellow card in his hand, in fact.

[narrator] A reprieve for Kompany,

but on the half-hour mark, there's no such luck for Stones.

John Stones is down and he's...

clutching the back of his right thigh, by the looks of things.

And when a player does that,

and in terms of today's game, you'd think it would be terminal.

yesterday, so, literally by the three month mark he should be

fully running and fully weight bearing...

outside so we can start moving him from the gym out onto the field.

So yeah, so far, so good.

No issues, obviously a lot of work still to do but... doing well.

[narrator] One guy who has Mende smiling is 24-year-old Raheem Sterling.

His 88th-minute goal against Feyenoord secures first place for City

in their Champions League group.

[commentator] Towards Sterling, back to Gündogan,

plays it to Sterling, Sterling against Jones...

Yes! Raheem Sterling finally has bagged his eleventh goal of the season

and Manchester City have had to wait a long time for the break-through,

but with barely a minute or two left, they've done it.

[narrator] Five days later, Sterling does it again...

in the 84th minute, to beat Huddersfield.

And it's in!

His second goal for Manchester City and it's Raheem Sterling...

who's scored so many important goals so far this season.

with the final whistle about to blow, City's luck appears to run out.

You know, one of those annoying games, annoying days, annoying nights

and you're thinking, "Is the goal going to come?"

I just remember going on the left, and I got the ball on the wing,

I came inside...

Kevin switched back on to his left and he gave it to me

and you know, I saw the corner and I put it in.

That was an amazing feeling, purely because of the time I scored in.

As a team that shows exactly what it meant to us

to win that game, you know?

You could have celebrated, went to the fans at the corner

and done a five-second celebration but...

I think to celebrate in that way showed what we were about,

showed what we meant this season.

United sitting back and waiting to try and counter.

City can't find the net.

Their chance to capitalize on all their set-piece preparation.

Manchester City have broken through.

They've been the only team that's threatened to since the start today.

And it is United 0, City 1.

[narrator] The celebration is short-lived.

Deep into first-half injury time, United pull a goal back.

Manchester United level on the stroke of half-time.

Gabriel Jesus earns a free kick.

It's another set-piece for City. Another golden opportunity.

It's going to be Silva,

Mensah can't go back to defend, but he doesn't get it away!

And it is swept in by Nicolas Ottamendi.

And it also brings them an eleven-point lead at the top...

and there's little sign of it narrowing.

It's a Derby win for the blue side of Manchester

that feels like a really notable day in the Premier League season.

Is this the day when the rest of the League said, "We can't catch you"?

[narrator] Attack wins the day again.

A two-one victory for City with 65 % possession.

The "noisy neighbors" are well on their way to turning the Derby blue.

[Steve] You saw the way José Mourinho approached it tactically...

and the way he set Manchester United up

and for all the public comments between José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola,

I thought that was the biggest professional compliment

that José Mourinho could... pay Pep Guardiola.

It was almost saying, "Listen, we're not going to open up here

because at the moment, you're better than us.

And if we're going to get a result, we're getting it in a different way."

Guardiola doesn't understand the concept of parking the bus.

He just unleashes the Ferraris.

I don't know the plan for my opening, but we came here to try to win the game.

I said it in the press conference...

and we did it the same like in Stanford Bridge...

and here again too... The big stadiums.

You can speak about anything you want.
