ismet is a college professor.

I never finished school.

I never went to college or anything like that.

I never thought that anybody would invite me to a university.

But here we are.

how are you doing, ismet?

Good to see you. Good to see you.

Ismet: I've been a professor of mechanical engineering

for more than 30 years, although I don't show it,

but I'm an older fellow.

Finally, you get to see my card. This is my stratos.

This is the exact copy of the famous lancia stratos.

That's something else, that is.

From 1974,

the only card that was designed as a rally car,

and it won

the world rally championship in '74, '75, and '76,

one of the most memorable cars ever made.

I like this,

how it comes up through the fender. Yeah.

The 1974 lancia is different than any car

I've ever seen, you know?

It tells you what cars can be.

It doesn't have to be

in the shape that everybody else sees them.

It can be any shape you want it to be,

no matter what angle you look at it.

It's like your cars -- gorgeous.

We'll say different, for sure.

like the '70s or the '80s is what it's taking me to.

and I want to see what he has.

I've got a new build going on

and I'm not quite sure what I'm gonna build yet,

but I'd like to start. Well, I mean,

I got to have something to start with generally.

Well, I've got a few toys here you could take a look at

if you want to. That's what I'd like to do.

People come to me with cars that they don't want

to see them go to the scrap yard.

This is 40 years of gathering.

Cars are all alive. They live.

If you just take them and crush them,

you're killing them.

It's very deceiving because you think it's been fixed

and all this stuff, but it hasn't been fixed before.

It looks like it's been drug through a knothole backwards,

burnt, and rode hard,

and put away dry.

It's had a hard life.

It seems like it's had a lot of heat and left outdoors.

The paint's burnt off it.

Oh, jeez. The door opened up.

The pinto is not a good looking car.

No. It's kind of a funny looking car.

Look at that now, would you?

But I mean, if it makes you smile,

it's a good car, isn't it?

That would be a cool car back in the day, you know that?

The only problem was that if you got rear-ended,

they'd blow up.

Oh, gas tank in the back? Gas tank right at the back.

Eh. - You can actually see it.

I see an odd shape is what I see.

It's pointy and fat.

When I'm looking at this pinto,

I'm thinking...

[ whistles ] scaring myself.

...It's a chance to make an odd car.

The price will tell me more.

200 bucks, you can have it.

Well, it needs an awful lot of work,

but it's a solid base.

chad: I'm gonna build the piece of art.

We're just gonna change a bunch of shapes on this car.

I really want to make it futuristic.

I want to use some sharp shapes.

I want to make it a race car.

I want to put a suit on it so you don't know.

I want to put some glass in it

so you can see right through the whole car or.

Wow.

We're gonna change the shape in the front,

then we're gonna change the shape in the back.

The quarter panel on this car is quite rotten.

You can square this one off,

sort of looks like you're working in

the '60s and '70s, I guess.

I think we'll make a honeycomb tail for it.

Very futuristic glass car.

That's what I'm gonna call it.

I had to sit out the last couple of builds.

Had a bit of a health issue

and I'm still not feeling the best,

but I'm back and I'm gonna do what I can.

So, this is what we're gonna do.

We're gonna build a futuristic glass car

out of a pinto.

When's the last time you seen a pinto?

What year of a thing are we starting with?

'71. - '71.

It's a fine looking automobile.

And they were only meant to go 'til '81?

[ laughter ]

pinto is never gonna be

anybody's first choice as a hot rod.

This is what I want the car to look like.

The back comes down like this.

We're gonna take some square tubes

and run across the back like that

and bring it back down into the taillight.

We're gonna close that off and make it bigger.

The front end, - I want to bring it farther ahead

and make it pointier.

We're gonna make the roof glass.

I, like, put a piece of glass all along the whole top of it.

Like, and the side doors,

as I say, - we're gonna change the door.

I want to put -- that's glass.

I want to put glass in the doors so you can see right through.

It's gonna be expensive because a sheet of metal is $70

and a sheet of plexiglas is $3.68.

Well, that car's only...

What's that stuff we use -- three sheets.

It'll be four sheets.

The doors -- - we want to make them come up.

I was thinking about taking a storage container

and cutting --

we had a bunch of - storage containers out there.

We got all that metal out there.

As you cut that, we can cut that in, say, inch strips.

We can make that shape. Make a sheet of honeycomb.

We are not going to use the engines in it.

We're gonna make it -- if it's gonna look like this,

for the gull-wing doors on it -- [ imitates engine running ]

wants to be cool.

Find a nice little small block for it.

Send it silly.

We have four weeks for this build.

Jolene: We have four weeks and $40,000.

Chad's taking on a little much.

I know that he can do it and he knows that he can do it.

It's just are we gonna get it done

in the time frame and in the budget?

what I could only describe as being a total basket case.

Jolene: The pinto's, in my opinion, the worst starting point

that we've started with.

It's rusted everywhere.

There's gonna be a lot of, you know,

cutting out and fabricating, which takes time.

It's a big build.

If the old pinto's a-rocking...

Jolene: Don't come knocking?

We've cut everything out of it.

What did we get ourselves into this time, alex?

We got a fire.

You're not - to touch the car anymore.

We got to rip the firewall out.

Aaron: This rear end is very wide.

Chad: The rear end's not gonna fit in there.

Have I done all this work for nothing?

[ thunder rumbles ]

alright. I'm thinking let's tear her apart, I guess.

I would like to turn this pinto in a futuristic glass car,

you know, something that no one's ever seen before.

How's the floor really look in this thing?

[bleep] jeez.

One pinto tailgate.

As we get flying into it,

there's just basic rot.

You know what I mean? It's just a basic discarded car

that probably would never be fixed unless we found it.

Generally, the rust dictates what we're gonna do

to the car anyways,

and I'm gonna let that continue

on this car car.

All the floors, - you and your mother cut out,

she never taught you that?

when I first started at this,

I've never picked up a tool.

Like, I mean, I've done stupid stuff

with friends and stuff, maybe drills and stuff,

but I've never picked up a grinder,

never picked up not a thing. I didn't know one thing

where the u point to the [bleep] ball joint went.

I didn't know a thing.

I just feel like my skills are better.

Like, I just feel better behind a tool.

Chad: Wow.

Wow.

What are we doing?

Oh, wow.

What did we get ourselves into this time, alex?

Yeah.

There's a lot of work to do here.

Like, see, in the inner fenders?

The inner offenders are all gone.

Like, it's terrible. Like, it's going.

Like, it is gone.

When there's so much rust like that,

it's just hard to take it all in.

She's a rough one.

We've cut everything out of it.

That's what the problem is.

The more we cut out, the more we got to fabricate,

and we'll fabricate as we go.

The challenge is going to be am I gonna be able

to fabricate fast enough to keep up?

Jolene: There is consequences to starting

with something so crappy.

It seems like we're definitely

gonna push the boundary of the time frame.

You're cutting structure out of the car,

so that means when you go back into it,

that you have to put the structure back in.

This car was a unibody, but we have so much out of it,

it does not have any integrity anymore.

We're gonna have to make our own chassis

to give it some stability.

As we put the frame from the front to the back,

what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna to run a piece of 2-inch

square tubing across the back,

and bring the frame and connect it to that.

Really make it strong.

There. She's on her own. She's on her own chassis.

That back end on there.

How do I want that back end look, you know?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how I'm gonna

build the back of the car to get it connected to the roof.

No.

Should have ran it all the way down, maybe.

-You know what I mean? -Yeah.

I'm not sure if the car will, you know, hold everything.

I couldn't just walk to the body panel of the old car.

All that thin tin, it would fall off, you know?

Like, that's toasty.

You would never really weld anything to that, really,

or that's...

That body fill in it.

I'm just brain-farting how to get

this piece on there, right?

for me to tell you exactly I know what I'm doing,

every car that we do that comes in here,

like -- not true.

I have to figure it out and make a plan.

So, that takes time, and that's where it's at.

Jolene: Chad's visions are so big that we never really know

what exactly it's gonna take to achieve it.

And right now, we're falling behind on this.

This is our first season as hiltz auto co.,

so, you know,

we're not looking to miss our deadlines.

I'm just using my brain to figure out which way

is the best way to build the ass of the car.

It's kind of making me think that I may as well make

the whole back of the car and then weld it

to the chassis that we have made inside

and disregard this.

That's an awful big back, isn't it?

to meet the rear of the car.

I have to draw a line on it,

the shape that I want to cut out of it.

I'm using a 16-gauge.

They don't use 16-gauge in cars anymore, I don't think.

16 gauge is thicker metal than we usually use.

We usually use 18.

This thing's looking like she's going. She's gonna take off.

-Something like that, eh? -Weld that in there.

Gonna be welded to that.

See that nice curve there?

That's a good curve. That's a good curve.

So, dad took off. He's got the roof clamped in,

so I'm gonna weld it up and surprise him.

A huge build, so hopefully it'll help us get ahead.

Colton wanted to come up here and get a bunch of work done

in a short amount of time to impress me.

[bleep], [bleep].

He worked the roof in the back.

I did not ask colton

to weld up the roof, and now it's gonna cost me time.

Pissed me off.

[bleep] - [ whimpers ]

he left the bottom. Didn't weld any of that.

He welded the two top rows solid completely

and never touched any of that

and never touched any of the bottom.

Well, that makes me ugly because it's supposed

to be spread around.

Yeah, I know he's trying to help,

but this set us backwards and we haven't got time to backstep.

I've got a little business here with colton today

coming up here and welding on the car.

Done more damage here than you can imagine.

Welded two big [bleep] streams across the back of the roof

and warped that after I [bleep] worked hard

not to make it like that.

That's am-a-teur.

When I sometimes get caught up in it, I get too ugly.

I'm trying to control myself a little bit. A little bit.

I mean, I'm just gonna have to express it a different way

somehow other than getting all, you know, lit up.

I'm telling you something right now, my son,

you're not - to touch the car anymore.

You've lost your privileges. You can throw in the wood.

Wood needs to be chucked in over from the basement

to the other side, - and the [bleep] wood from there

has to be chucked in over the other side.

and that's when I make mistakes.

When things go wrong,

I beat myself up more than anybody.

Chad: I cannot let colton's mistake slow me down,

so I'm just gonna keep working.

And as we weld our cars together like that,

we can watch them together and they stay in place.

Start running beads on them,

you start running big welds on them,

that's when things start getting crooked.

Colton, you get lazy and start puddling it on the back,

well, that all has to be ground off and welded again.

Look at that, man.

Top quarter panel put on.

I know somebody who can warp that.

so, right now, I cut that off,

'cause I'm gonna put a quarter panel on.

We're running behind just because

we're making everything.

We're actually building a concept car

from a pinto.

Jolene: There's still a whole lot left to do with the fabricating.

We have a tight deadline with this.

It's four weeks, and it doesn't seem doable.

and if we're not there, then it's...I don't know.

I'm gonna try to send him out and get some glass,

something strong that won't break

if a bee ran into it or something.

It's hard to judge, too, because I don't know much about glass.

But, you know, that's why I started at a junkyard.

Just looking for, like, anything durable

that can flex or bend or, you know,

not scratched up,

quality, I suppose, you could say.

What we have here?

Glass. I mean, it looks pretty clear.

I mean, the only thing this sees is naked butt cheeks,

so, you know, there's no scratches or nothing.

And I mean, it holds a human. A human lays in there and on it.

So I think it would be okay in car.

It'd be perfect. It's long,

which gives us more glass.

The one thing I found out there

big enough that I could use,

you got - a tanning bed back there.

and he's using his own brain, you know?

But it's plexiglas, and plexiglas breaks.

so we're gonna have to find something that will.

We're got to start rocking and rolling

at 9:00 in the morning if we can,

that's including me.

Colton, you are welding.

I'm gonna let him weld again.

As we do this,

this is the way I do it quickly.

All the way around. By the time you get back to there,

it hasn't even had a sunburn.

But I think dad was born to do this.

Yes, it's a very hard thing to live up to that.

chad: Remember your mistakes. Like, that's what life's about,

is remembering all the mistakes that you've made.

And that's what you got to do. Every time colton messes up

or welds something wrong,

he has to take it as an experience to know

not to do it next time.

You become so smart.

If I was to weld this here, like this here,

my air would be on top here.

I might not be the best car builder

or, you know, whatever, but I'm trying.

it's hard for me at my age to work all my life

to get to this point and then have

my son that's never been with me to try

and take me back a few steps. It's hard, you know,

because I am going backwards somewhat,

but I have to remember that life is short

and he does mean more than the car.

They call that the fruits of your labor.

Or fruit of the loom. One or the other.

chad: We cut a couple storage containers open there,

and I've kept the leftover metal

because I usually keep everything.

It's got a nice shape bending on here,

goes up and down. - It's all bent just right.

The back of the car,

I want to put that in there and make like

a honeycomb looking thing.

I've never cut storage container before

to make a shape for a car,

but I'm just gonna cut it apart and see what happens,

you know?

But that's good, though. It's a nice rigidity metal

for the back of that.

So, now this is gonna be fun, actually.

Jolene: There's always a risk involved

with doing these creative things,

because if it doesn't work, then we lose time.

We don't know how it's all gonna work out.

We don't know how long it's gonna take us

to make it work.

Find the center and then it's cut.

See if that'll will fit in there

when we make a decision that's gonna add time,

then it's gonna have a domino effect on the remaining builds.

When the season's over, it's over.

We're almost out of time with this build,

so we've opted to spend a little bit more on the engine.

Chad: Whoa-oa-oa-oa-oa!

We've spent $3,000 on it,

but we're gonna save so many hours of time,

and that time is gonna be put on all of the, you know,

the fabrication that's going on in the car right now.

We're putting the v8 in this car. 302.

It's gonna be an awesome little beast.

Chad: Got ahold of it? - Yeah.

I think this is the perfect engine for our build.

Should be a donut machine, that's for sure.

-Can you let down a little? -Yep.

Chad: The engine has to go back quite a ways

to be over top of them wheels, right?

And putting that engine back there,

that's where it should be

so it handles good and stops good and all that sort of stuff.

It's almost like a mid-engine car.

It makes it ride better.

They won't tip and dive, you know?

The engine will be back

and it'll give it a nice center of gravity.

This might not fit.

How the [bleep] does that happen?

Can we go in a little bit more?

How are we on that side for manifold?

[bleep] sakes.

Messes up a lot.

Right down by that steering.

Slow up.

You're right on the steering on this side.

It's gonna have to go over that way a little bit.

Wow. Ain't this gonna be something to fit in here now,

chad: I'm starting to learn that anybody that has

a small block forward in a pinto have done a lot of work,

'cause they do not fit.

This tool -- we just picked this up today.

Jolene went and picked it up for me.

It's had a little neglect.

When I met gene winfield to do a course,

this is the very first tool he had there

to show us how to work metal.

This was his workstation.

Gene winfield is a custom car builder

and he's a legend in my mind.

There it is right there. Gene winfield. Huh?

That was the very first station I've ever seen.

There's so many things on that little table

that can be done. Like, that little table built you a car.

Oh, [bleep], [bleep].

That's gonna be cut out.

Chad: I thought maybe that 302 would be fairly easy

to get back in the firewall.

Now I find out that we got to rip the firewall out.

As we have to do this, we're falling even

farther behind because we have to fabricate even more.

But that's what's happening. That's what's going on.

The engine has got to go back so far

that I have to make a firewall.

And that's what - we build custom cars for,

'cause we make stuff.

Alex: Everything we touch on this car,

it's got to be fabricated.

This is probably the most fabrication

we've done in the shop.

It would've been easier to build a car right from scratch.

It's a lot of work.

I'm getting full of anxiety, you know?

We're supposed to have this car done

in a short amount of time.

And as alex is cutting into the firewall,

it's just getting deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper.

Now we've just got to beat out. It's going. No more firewall.

We have relocated the engine where it should be

and we've got the engine right over top of the front end

and back a little bit.

Alex: This is gonna be the new firewall.

I made it all. Made the template all in one piece.

Weld up in the sides, weld up top,

weld up in the square.

I'm just getting her so she fits, okay?

Chad: That's what we like to see.

Beautiful.

It looks better, don't it?

Look stronger, don't it?

Good construction, the way that's constructed there now

is a lot stronger than it was.

I'm liking it.

There's so much to go, though.

So much.

Jolene: We're out of time with this build.

More time added means more money

that we have to pay the crew,

and every day counts, every second counts in the day.

Chad: I still don't want to compromise what we're doing,

what we're going for, you know?

It's a hard thing.

It's all about the car for me.

It's all about the car.

Car still living?

The rear end for the pinto, when I took the cover off,

it probably had about two and a half,

three gallons of water.

So we got a totally different rear end for this build.

This rear end is very wide.

Once the wheels are on it, it makes it wider.

You know, I'm kind of worried it might not fit.

Outside diameter

of the tire - on the rear end on the wheels

is 68.42.

What do we got? 65? - Yeah.

[bleep]

so, the tires are gonna be too wide.

A lot of money to spend on these rims and tires,

and, you know, we got no time to send them back.

Chad: So we want to shorten that rear end, eh?

Can we cut a little bit of them, or

got enough teeth - that you can cut them, or...

You can do two inches.

Take two inches off?

You can on one side.

What I'm gonna do is cut this housing off

and take an inch and a half off this side.

So by doing that, that short axle will fit perfectly.

-Harder? -Yeah.

We're almost there.

It's gonna probably start going harder here

in a minute. There you go.

Chad: I got it!

Holy [bleep], eh? Yeah?

Yep.

Do it for the good guys!

Alex: You've got to be right on the money

when you're centering it.

Everything's got to be straight and true.

So, you pretty much got to dial it in.

One shortened axle

with new bearings and seals.

You hold that there, will you?

We paid for it.

so, anyways, we got the outside of the tire, colton.

Inside the tire, right there.

Hold that. Right there.

Chad: See, now, we got sixty eight and a half

to get inside that car.

Come on the other side, colton.

-Where do you want it? -On the other side.

Right there. Right in the middle. Right in the middle.

[bleep] me.

Have I done all this work for nothing?

The rear end's not gonna fit in there.

No. So, it has to be cut out. This has to be cut up,

and that has to be cut up and pull it out.

[bleep]

alex already done his job by cutting it.

Now I'm gonna have to cut the quarter panels

to make it fit.

Them quarter panels have to be cut

and brang it.

It's a backward step on a big build is what it is.

If I say that I'm gonna deliver something,

I have to deliver.

If I do not deliver,

well, then I'm not who I say I am.

Oh, well. That's what you get

for trying to [bleep] make performance cars,

I guess.

If it was easy - everybody would be doing it.

Damn it.

Jolene: It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel

with this build.

Chad: If I do fail,

I'll keep going until I get it done.

I'm gonna work all night, put the glass in.

We're not hitting deadlines

and it's gonna have a domino effect on the other builds

that we've taken on.
