Maiden Holmes

Episode 18

Is it the same poison as the Princess's?

It's similar

but not identical.

It's strange.

She is the close maid of the Princess.

Do you think she came in contact with the poison too?

I smell

something strange in this room.

Is there an incense lit?

This is Yunchuan's favourite Baili Incense.

Are you talking about this?

I smell something else as well

Rushuang.

Your Highness,

it's time to act now.

Prince.

I have a suggestion.

I've underestimated the lady Detective Su's brought.

I didn't expect that

she could actually cure Yunchuan from the poison.

Has Her Highness recovered?

In another two days,

we can formally discuss the political betrothal with Prince Qi.

When it's done,

we shall depart back to Beirong.

Che Yan,

prepare for the return journey.

What about the culprit?

Won't Your Highness find it out?

A scapegoat will gloss over the matter.

If we stay on,

I worry about unnecessary troubles.

The purpose of our trip

is for the treaty of alliance and the marriage of state.

Given the current situation,

we've gained upper-hand in the treaty.

We only have to wait for Yunchuan and Prince Qi's marriage.

Anything else

will be discussed further after we return.

Yes, Your Highness.

You should stay at your mansion.

If someone with an ulterior motive finds out,

it won't be good.

I just want to check on you.

Little Su...

Stop.

Walls have ears.

Since you're putting up a show,

you should take care of yourself first.

Rushuang's prepared this medicine.

Have it first.

Someone's outside by the window.

The person's left.

I saw you dancing previously...

It's not like you're tone-deaf.

But Her Highness is.

I'd like to rest,

please take your leave.

Alright.

I'd like to see who's trying to hurt Yunchuan!

Che Yan?

Rushuang,

can you really cure Princess Yunchuan?

I don't know.

Bring me the satchel.

Okay.

What's this?

It's Princess Yunchuan's blood sample.

What's it for?

After two days of sediment,

the toxin in the blood has been separated.

This allows me to test for the poison.

Why is it like this?

Rushuang, is there any new discovery?

Oh no!

Rushuang!

Che Yan.

You've been working for me for years,

I regard you as my own brother.

Why did you do it?

Who are you being so loyal to?

That you'd rather die than to expose him!

Your Highness!

I also

wished to tread on the heels of Your Highness,

do the best and die fighting in the battlefield.

That's the glory of a Beirong man.

But I can't put my whole family in danger

for the sake of my honor, Your Highness!

Who made you do this?

What?

Do you think that I

can't even protect your entire family?

It's the pro-war leader in the court,

Nuo Hu.

That's right.

Who else could it be if it's not him

to do something like this?

I'll have my ways to deal with him.

What's urgent now is to cure the princess,

give me the antidote now.

I didn't poison the princess!

What?

It's not you?

Lord Nuo Hu said that

after arriving here,

I shall follow orders and do as told.

Follow orders?

Whose orders?

An anonymous man.

I've only heard his voice,

but I've never seen him.

Is he from Liang Dynasty?

Yes.

I'm afraid we've alarmed them now.

If we want to catch the culprit...

Little Su!

What's wrong?

Little Su!

Sister Su!

Sister Su!

I'm late!

What happened?

Everyone,

leave this room immediately.

Sister Su...

Little Su,

how do you feel?

Rushuang.

Am I poisoned as well?

Sister Su, hold on to it.

You're not poisoned that much.

But it's reached Fengchi acupuncture point.

How could this happen?

Is there any remedy?

Rushuang has said it's chronic

I think, for the time being,

it won't kill me.

The current priority is to cure the princess.

You aren't poisoned as badly as the princess,

but you can't keep taking it.

Rushuang, you came here in a rush.

Have you found out what the poison was?

I've only discovered two of the ingredients.

What are they?

I extracted the toxin from Her Highness' blood

and mixed it to the potion made of monkshood,

realizing that two things didn't go with the monkshood.

One is Huanghuo and the other is Mindu.

They're respectively found in insect resistant coating

and Baili Incense,

is that right?

Are these the poisons that Yunchuan has got?

If I'm right with the guess,

it is the long-lost

Four-Drug Soul Reaper.

Four-Drug Soul Reaper?

I've been in Jiang Hu for so long

but I've never heard of this drug.

The Four-Drug Soul Reaper

consists of four incompatible drugs

to induce a lethal poison right within one's body.

But if anyone gets only one ingredient,

it's not poisonous.

What?

What a sophisticated method.

As it requires an incredible precision

in dosage,

few people could master it

and it couldn't be passed down eventually.

I've only seen it in medical books too.

Since we know the poison now,

do you know how to make the antidote?

There are over a hundred variations of the poison.

I need to find out the four drugs

to make the right antidote.

This also means that

in daily life the culprit

only had to send these four items

to Yunchuan's room,

and she'd be slowly poisoned day after day?

That's right,

it's also why Little Yue showed signs of being poisoned too.

Rushuang,

they've stayed in the room just now too.

Take a look at them.

Brother Pei.

The pulse of Brother Pei is steady,

and there's no sign of being poisoned.

Your Highness,

please.

Your Highness has no signs of being poisoned as well.

This is bizarre.

Everyone's in the same room.

Why some are poisoned

and others are not?

Xiao Yanzhi has actually gone to the inn.

My Lord,

how about catching him on the spot

and accusing him of defying the Emperor?

Make the carriage ready, I'm going to the palace right now.

Yes.

Everyone's in the room,

but why am I the only one who's poisoned?

Why did you remove your mask? Put it on quick.

It's the pillow.

Your Highness.

Why... Why is it?

Brother Jiang,

where's His Highness?

What is it? Speak quick!

His Majesty is coming to visit here.

What?

Go to the inn now and bring His Highness back.

It's the Bixiang Herb.

Detective Su, you're looking for me?

Is this what the Princess previously used?

Were the items in the room newly-bought in the capital?

No.

Since we'd stay here for a long time,

Her Highness asked us to take a few

items that she often used.

All things that were previously in this room were cleared out.

But this pillow...

Why is it new?

Her Highness wasn't sleeping well on the first few days of arrival.

It's said that this pillow could help.

So it's replaced.

Who said it?

Her Highness mentioned it herself.

She said that the Bixiang Herb had a calming effect,

and asked me to buy it from the drug store to put it in the pillow.

Since then,

Her Highness did sleep well.

Did Her Highness know about herbs?

How did she know that Bixiang Herb could help?

She heard the guqin master, Li Yu, mentioning it,

and remembered it.

Guqin master...

Then this pine guqin

was made personally by Li Yu too?

Yes.

Her Highness has been using the one

of Li Yu to practise,

but she couldn't get used to it.

So Li Yu specifically made her

a pine guqin.

In the room,

what else were newly bought?

Nothing more.

The herb pillow was suggested by Li Yu,

and this guqin was made by Li Yu as well.

Could her be the culprit?

Hasn't she been serving the Princess all the time?

Before Her Highness decided to come here,

she volunteered to become the guqin master.

Then where is she now?

I'll take you there.

Rushuang, take care of the Princess.

Let's go.

Your Highness!

Fei Yuan reported that

His Majesty is visiting you.

Looks like we're still late!

She really is the culprit.

The tea is still warm,

it means that she isn't far away.

Come on, have a look!

Take a look!

Come, look around!

Quick. Do come in.

I'm back.

Is everything done?

Yes.

Oh, no!

What?

Reception Arrangement of Beirong Delegation

Mansion of Prince Qi

Your Majesty.

You may rise.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Breakthrough

Your Majesty has arrived

yet Prince Qi hasn't been here to see His Majesty.

What's the excuse?

His Highness is changing clothes.

and can't see His Majesty in time.

We seek Your Majesty's forgiveness.

This is an impromptu visit,

and brother is still ill,

it is acceptable if he couldn't make it in time.

Breakthrough

He has a kind of tea with a light and elegant taste.

The color of this tea is relatively deep,

it seems it's not the one.

Is Your Majesty referring to the Congxiang Tea?

I think so.

Make me the tea.

Yes, Your Majesty.

The color of this tea is deep too,

it isn't what I want.

Your Majesty, shall we try another one?

Your Majesty,

we aren't here for tea.

Prince Qi isn't around, is he?

Your Majesty,

you ordered Prince Qi to reflect on his wrongdoing at home,

yet he's gone out without your permission.

Your Majesty,

Prince Qi is challenging the supremacy by deceiving you.

He's committed the sin of defiance.

Uncle,

the crime of defying the monarch

isn't what I can bear.

Your Majesty.

Rise, brother.

I've heard that you are ill.

Uncle has especially invited me to visit you together.

Ill?

I wonder who've told uncle my illness?

A servant.

It's just a mistake.

Your Majesty!

We've found evidence.

Prince Qi is innocent.

Your Majesty.

I'm the sinned official, Su Ci.

Rise and speak.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Just now, you said that

you have evidence to prove Prince Qi's innocence.

Yes.

We've found that

the guqin master among the delegation, Li Yu,

was the culprit who poisoned the Princess.

Where is the evidence?

Li Yu was on the run.

But we're currently pursuing her in the city.

Someone still on the run

can't possibly be evidence, can it?

Li Yu has escaped

but at her room

we found this

the delegation reception document with the seal of the Ministry of Rites.

It' a seal from the Ministry of Rites to consult superior opinions,

and not the one to disseminate documents.

Not many in the court have this document.

Your Majesty, please have a look.

Reception Arrangement of Beirong Delegation

Whom have the Ministry of Rites submitted the consultation to previously?

Bring me their documents!

Reception Arrangement of Beirong Delegation

Prince Qi

Your Majesty,

they're all here.

This...

Your Majesty,

to rid Prince Qi's crime, Su Ci could be

making up a huge lie intentionally.

Su Ci,

these documents are currently

placed here in completion.

I'd like to see

how you're explaining this.

Your Majesty,

please allow me

to take a closer look.

You're allowed.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

Hold on.

Your Majesty,

I worry that Su Ci has planned

to memorize these arranged documents

to accuse others of forgery.

Your Majesty, I suggest to

mix up these documents.

I shall see

how she will identify them.

Uncle, your words do make sense.

Yes.

Your Majesty,

it's done.

Su Ci,

you can step forward to check now.

Thank you, Your Majesty.

This document

belongs to Prince Qi.

Prince Qi.

How could you identify it?

Your Majesty,

it has the stain of sword polishing grease.

Prince Qi practises martial arts all year round,

he must have the habit of caring for his weapons daily.

Hence, I guess that

this document belongs to Prince Qi.

I've long heard that you have an amazing perception,

I see that it's truly the case.

Thank you for the compliment, Your Majesty.

This is ink paste.

This document

is Minister Shen's.

Minister Shen.

Bloodstain.

Gold paint.

This...

What are you smirking at?

Minister Lei,

where's your document?

Isn't it right here?

Oh, Su Ci,

I've exposed your identity

but don't take the chance to revenge out of resentment

The ink on this document hasn't dried.

It's obviously forged today.

What do you mean it's not dried yet?

Who can distinguish it?

Your Majesty, it's clearly dry.

Just because His Majesty praised your shrewdness,

you're accusing me, aren't you?

If the ink cannot prove,

what about the paper?

What paper?

Your Majesty,

- Your Majesty... - Minister Shen,

what paper do these documents use?

It's made from Kaihua Bill Paper.

Then, may I ask Minister Lei,

why is yours the only one

that uses Kaihua Paper?

What... What Kaihua Bill Paper and Kaihua Paper?

Who can recognize them?

Your Majesty!

Your Majesty, please judge wisely, Your Majesty.

Is there any way to test them?

Your Majesty,

both types of paper are incredibly hard to differentiate

but Kaihua Paper is water-tight.

A test is all it takes to know.

Yes.

Your Majesty,

The water droplets penetrate all four other documents

but Minister Lei's document

is water-tight.

How dare you, Lei Zheng!

You poisoned Princess Yunchuan,

and instigated the discord of two nations.

What's your motive!

False charge...

It's a false charge!

All of you must have worked together

to frame me!

How dare you!

Protect His Majesty!

You...

Your Majesty...

Unsheathing a blade before His Majesty

is a capital offense of rebellion.

Even death wouldn't redeem him.

My Lord,

at least Li Yu is saved.

Otherwise,

we'd have suffered a great loss!

The person who I've asked you to investigate,

have you found him?

My Lord,

we have clues.

That person lurks among the court officials.

Now we can't wait any longer.

Find out that person immediately.

Yes.
