[woman speaking English] I was on the beach.
I had come because I needed to have a nice little getaway.
And I'm sitting down there and this really nice looking woman comes up to me
and says, "Are you all right?"
So she said, "Well, do you have a boyfriend?"
I looked at her and said, "No, I don't have a boyfriend!
I don't like boys and they don't like me." And that's what did it.
[chuckles] So we started talking.
She didn't like boys either.
I didn't know anything about her really.
But people in the hotel when I got there told me that she was a famous singer.
It was very hot there at that time.
So then she said, "Would you like to go up into the mountains where it's cooler?"
And I said yes, thinking all the time,
"I always promised my mother I'd never ride on motorcycles."
She was very sure of herself
and she could be a little abrupt, but that didn't bother me.
And the nicest part of all was she kissed me.
It was wonderful.
But I didn't ever really think it would matter to her if she ever saw me again.
The few times that I ran into her in Mexico City,
she always had a really pretty, pretty woman with her.
And I was just ordinary.

[applause, cheering]
[woman speaking English] Manuel Arroyo brought her.
It was his idea,
because he had heard her in Mexico City
when she had just started singing again after being retired for a long time.
He was a very important publisher.
Had never done anything with musicians.
But he just wanted other people to hear her
and for her-- thought it would be good for her,
and for the public, if she came to Spain.
[acoustic guitar]
[Chavela singing]
[Almodóvar]
[song fades]
[cheering, whistling]
[acoustic guitars]
[García Lorca] She was particularly strong
in talking about loneliness and abandonment,
and it was so powerful
that it made you experience all those feelings from their very core.
And though that's tremendously upsetting,
there's a feeling in the end of catharsis.
And, uh, in the end, joy.
[sighs]
[Chavela]
[García Lorca] No one was prepared in that first concert, no.
It really caught us off guard.
It was so...
Um.
We were not expecting that.
I don't think she was either.
[Almodóvar]
[laughs]
[Almodóvar]
[Chavela]
[cheering]

[García Lorca]
[Chavela]
[García Lorca speaking English] She wanted to come back to Madrid before dying to sing.
If she decided she wanted to come, there was no stopping her.
[chuckles]
She was full of energy when she arrived,
and there were great days.
[laughing]
The day of the concert, she got sick.
But she-- You know, she made it.
It was very powerful for everyone.
She was clearly saying good-bye to her audience,
to her friends.
Everyone was very aware of how frail she was
and that it was her last trip.
And she was happy.
She did the last thing she wanted to do before dying.
[Benarroch]
[murmurs]
[chuckling]
[applause, cheering]
[woman] Yes!
It's a very lovely privilege.
[cheering]
[crowd chanting]

[song continues]
[song continues]
[song ends]
