Sometimes you have to take a jump.

When I got here and I built the shop,

I visualized that property being cleaned,

and a bunch of antique cars on it,

and a lot of happy people.

And that became rockabilly weekend.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

And I'm just trying to relate with other people

is what's going on.

I know how they feel about their cars because I know

how I feel about my cars.

[ Engine rumbling ]

I'm able to build the cars that I feel and I see

and bring them to life.

All the dreams that I've ever had,

they're starting to come true.

10 years of my life, I've been mowing that back lawn,

thinking about other people, how I'm going to get them here.

Every year we build a car to raffle off.

This year, where it's Hiltz auto co.,

I want it to be the best one yet.

[ Engine starts and revs ]

Wow.

Rockabilly weekend is a car show,

something that I've been doing for 10 years now.

It's the anniversary year.

I've made it into something.

I want to keep making it into something.

So I want it bigger and better than last year, that's for sure.

There'll be people coming from all over the world.

It's a good time, and there's a lot of happy faces.

[ Engine revving ]

[ Laughs ]

Every year of rockabilly weekend,

we always raffle off a car.

We're going to be selling tickets

for $25 apiece, so we have to build something

that people are going to want to buy tickets on.

It's the first year that we're building

a giveaway car under Hiltz auto co.,

so, you know, we really have to build something over the top.

It brings more people. Let's face it,

you have a chance to roll out of this place

with a hot rod.

What would you want more than that?

We heard through the grapevine that a farmer down the road

had a car that he might be able to donate.

That's all... you know, that's how it goes, word of mouth.

[ Engine revving ]

My name's Robin Horsnell, fifth generation farmer,

and making some hay lately.

I'm usually not the type of guy to give things away.

I always like to get a little something,

but what a better spot for it to go...

Somebody local trying to make something of himself.

All right, man, let's take a look at her.

I want to take a look at her.

I mean, this is a build where we don't have a client,

so we don't have a guaranteed sale at the end.

So we have to keep the costs low.

I mean, it's all about build low, sell high.

There's the bad boy. Oh, wow.

She's a little rough, eh? It's a little rough.

Little rough around the edges, but...

Yeah.

I surprised you didn't throw it away. [Chuckles]

This car is in really poor condition.

It's completely rusted at the bottom, there's no floor.

You know what? I kind of like it the way it is

because there's no floor in it. Yeah.

We get to start... we don't have to cut anything out.

We don't have to... you know, we just have to go, right?

It's rough. I mean, it's literally rough.

Yeah, I know it's rusty and all that stuff,

but I don't give a [bleep].

It's just a matter of you got to cut all the stuff off.

I'm just looking it over, that's all.

I see a headlight door.

I want to check this headlight door out.

This was a good-looking current day in its day,

you know that? Yeah, it would've been.

Yeah, it was a good-looking car in its day.

I think we can bring it back together.

We'll put her on the road.

I'm happy with that.

I see potential in everything.

And it's the right price.

Jolene: It's a classic example of "you get what you pay for."

Yes, it's zero dollars, but are we going to be

putting a lot more time and effort and energy

into something that is completely rough?

And we still don't have a chassis

or an engine or anything else for this build.

I always say the car tells you what it wants done.

We've got a '38 Ford two-door humpback.

Be something rockabilly, you know?

'50-something it may have been going

up and down the road in that time.

I do not want to put any fenders on it.

- No hood, open motor. - Wow!

We're also going to take away the roof.

We're going to put a v-8 in it

with headers coming down the side.

We're going to lower the chassis.

Hopefully, we can make this car nice and low.

That's what we're going to make, a two-door roadster.

- Colton. - Yes, dad?

Come here, dude. Alex.

It's that time. It's that time again.

It's the 10th annual rockabilly weekend,

and I'm excited and nervous

and all that same thing at the same time.

Aaron's not with us on this one.

We're going to have to dig down deep

because that's a man down...

A man and a half, actually.

Man and a half down.

That means we're going to have

to work as a team tighter than ever.

Aaron's out sick.

Not going to discuss anything further than that.

You know, I'd like to keep his privacy.

But here at Hiltz auto co., we have to keep moving.

It's going to be a big challenge to finish the cars on time

a man down. We'll have to communicate.

Yeah, it'll have to be pure symphony.

Yeah. [ Laughs ] It will.

I mean, we'll all have to be, like,

played out just right to make it happen.

Alex: All come together.

Yeah, it has to be that way.

We got a '38 Ford.

We're not going to use the fenders.

We're not going to use the hood.

We're going to make an open motor roadster.

The bottom of it's rusty.

It's got no floor in it, so what we're going to do

is make our own floor and our own sills.

And as we section it, we're going to have to leave

a little room for a channel down over the chassis,

because I want to make this car as low as possible.

This build is strictly Chad's vision.

You know, there's no client attached to it.

You can tell he's got the spark with this build.

You know, he's putting his taste and his style into it.

We're going to chop it, we're going to section it,

and we're going to channel it. Are you ready?

- [ Chuckles ] - Motivation time. Let's do it.

You know what I'm saying? We got what we paid for.

I know it's a bit rough, but you've got to look

beyond what's going on. I'm almost lost for words.

Alex: Wow.

This body is rusted bad.

[ Chuckles ] It's, uh...

You got your tetanus shot? So...

- Yeah. - [ Alex laughs ]

What I'm thinking is, we'll get it in,

we'll weld the door shut,

and then we'll get it all secured up

and then we'll go from there.

- How's that, Colton? - Sounds good to me.

Chad: We're a man down, and everybody has to step up.

And this is where Colton has got his chance.

Chad: Perfect.

No sense going any further than we have to. Whew!

It's definitely freedom to take pieces

and parts from other cars to build a hot rod.

That's freedom to me...

To build something from anything.

The first couple steps is where this body's so out of shape,

we want to connect it together.

Once we weld the doors shut, we can do anything

and get it squared up, then we can do anything to it

because it's squared and it's welded together.

[ Crackling ]

[ Hissing ]

As I'm looking at it, the car talks to you

and tells you exactly what you need to do with it.

Now that the doors are welded shut,

I'm kind of liking the way it looks.

As we're putting it together and tacking it

and getting it tight together,

I'm seeing just a one-piece body.

What are you thinking, Jolene?

I think it would be cooler to be able to hop in it.

It's like a cool factor.

Is it? I think so.

Okay.

[ Chuckling ]

The builds are never a straight line.

There's always... we're always changing direction,

and Chad changes his mind every day, you know?

It's what keeps it exciting for the team, too.

She's rough, but we'll make something pretty out of it.

You got that right. [ Laughs ]

Now I can cut the roof off because this is welded together.

The top is welded together. The bottom is welded together.

We've got a little [indistinct]. Can't go anywhere.

[ Buzzing ]

There she goes, there she be, there she blows.

We'll sweep up here, we'll get this roof off,

and then we'll sweep up.

We'll smash that, put it in our paint for sparkle.

- Are you serious? - Yeah, dead serious.

- You can put glass in paint. - Can you?

I'd never even... yes!

Run that [bleep] right through your gun, it hits the light,

it sparkles just like anything else.

I think they probably used that before they used Pearl probably.

Oh, okay. Smashed glass.

You're going to take the back, Colton.

Take the back if you can, me and Alex take the front.

Sort of, I guess.

Pick that right off, can we? Yeah.

Heck, it's light as anything.

I want to save this roof, obviously.

Colton: Kind of looks like a Porsche out there now.

Jolene: [ Laughs ] A Porsche.

[ Glass rattles ]

So what's going on? We're going to cut

the bottom of the car off.

Well, we don't want to fix that.

You know how long it'll take to fix all that?

Fix the bottom of the sill, fix the bottom of the door,

fix the front? No.

The car's telling me what it wants to be done, you know?

It's kind of telling me where to customize it

because of where all the rust is.

Shing! Cut it off!

Before we cut off the bottom,

we're going to reinforce it all with square tubing

so nothing takes off.

And then we're going to line the top of the cabin

with exhaust pipe.

Once I weld that to there, it adds another body line.

Also... also, it gives me more height

from what I cut off the bottom.

You know what I mean? Whatever I cut off the bottom

I've added to the top.

When you don't have things to bend that for you,

you just make up things to do it yourself, you know?

Actually, I've had older gentlemen tell me,

like, "you're doing exactly what I did when I was a kid,"

you know? They didn't have anything,

so they became resourceful.

- They need more bend, don't it? - Yeah.

Sometimes it hurts because when you bang it on the ground,

sometimes it'll rattle you right through,

but just keep going because you need it bent.

It'd be nice just to push a button.

We have very little time on this build.

We still don't have a chassis or an engine.

And we're a man down right now.

We've taken on a big build for a short amount of time.

Does that stay like that?

This stays like this and then we'll put the fill on that

and we'll fill that out.

Once we weld it on, that's a bottom body line.

Jolene: We picked up something that is pretty toasted.

We still have to build something that people are going

to want to buy tickets on.

We're trying to make a name for ourselves,

so we really want this car to be a statement

and to advertise show Hiltz auto co. Altogether.

Got to do with what we got, haven't we?

Mm-hmm. We haven't got much, so...

I've got the Jack that goes to the bending tool.

Alex went down to see Aaron today, so he picked it up.

I have no idea how it works, but we're gonna find out.

So we're a man down right now.

I don't want us to get behind on the build,

so I'm going to jump in and get my hands dirty.

Chad really needs help framing these wheel Wells.

Get your piece of wrought iron in there.

Get it underneath here,

and on this one.

And then give it a couple Jacks

and then roll the metal through,

and it'll roll all the way out.

She wants to help. She's probably a little bit

worried about the build...

Wondering where we're going, you know?

She has that on her brain, too, you know?

I've never used a machine like this before.

I'm not scared to try anything, if you know what I mean.

If they can do it, I can do it.

The English wheel is challenging.

I mean, I like to think I'm strong and mighty,

but, you know, that one tired me out a bit.

I feel like I've been studying for the last three years

being with Chad.

Like, I just had that feeling. Yeah, I did.

Today I'm hoping to find a chassis or an engine

that we can use for this build.

we're trying to keep it as low as possible.

I mean, Chad's all over the place right now.

But we really need to focus and find a chassis and an engine

for this build.

I got to check out them chrome wheels.

Well, I'd rather... I just want to take a look at it.

I kind of like that.

So this is the frame that was under it.

- Chad: Cool. - Chassis's still pretty solid

for being a 1937.

Got linkage, yeah. Brakes still there.

Don't know if it has brakes or not, but...

Wouldn't be much rust, that's for sure.

The linkage right there for the clutch.

Awesome.

The reason I like the chassis, it still has a straight axle.

Well, when you want the motor open, you don't want

that ugly front end up there with the control arms

and the lower control arms and your coil Springs.

That's not the front end that hot rodders

think of when they think of hot rodding.

You think she still runs? I drove it here last year.

What's the best you'll do on it?

I just want your best price. That's all,

That's pretty reasonable for a chassis and an engine.

Yeah. I'll take it for $400. I would take $400 for it.

I think we made the right decision.

We have a lot of work to do on the body,

but this chassis works. It's a roller,

and that's where we're going to save a bit of time.

It all affects the bottom line.

I'm thinking that I want to lower this body.

Like, we got to lower it as much as possible

because we put the body on right now.

is the chassis stripped down

and get the front end over on top of the Springs on the front

so we know where we're going.

I'll start it today and take that out.

The chassis is 50 percent of the car.

The underneath of it is your insides.

You know, who you are as a person.

doing the deal like I do every year, cleaning the dooryard up.

And this is what they call the dooryard.

After coming out of the door of my house,

this is my yard.

As we're building this car for rockabilly,

not even really thinking, you know?

I like the back end of the car, like, don't get me wrong,

but we're it's rusted, instead of repairing it,

it's my chance to make something new.

There we go. So I'm gonna put that on there,

cut all the rust off there, put a little piece in there,

and we'll put a brand-new piece right up there

while we're up in there,

and the bumper's gonna be like that.

We don't have much time on this build,

so all decisions will be made on the fly.

is to go out and find something like this

and weld on it and play on it

and get something from near nothing

and make something out of it.

This car right here, this is what I would do for myself.

Right there. I'd go get that car.

Buddy gives it to you for nothing.

It's a piece of junk. No one else is gonna fix it.

But the fun of it is to weld metal to it

and then see it become life, you know what I mean?

It's what I like about a car.

You can grab something for nothing

and make it into something.

To get the car back inside,

and get the body off the wheels to roll it back in

because you can't roll it with the body sitting on the wheels

like, I mean, that's just... You can't do that.

All right. When we jacked up the body,

I sort of gave the back end a slant.

So as I look at it, it really looks nice

as I'm sitting here, does it not?

The car is a jump-in. I want...

You're thinking you want it as low to the ground,

low to the ground, low to the ground as you can.

This is not the case.

As I see it up in the air

with the bobtail, it just looks better.

and design is where I'm at.

There's no real shape or form that says "this is hot rodding."

When you have the dream to make something

and build a car the way you want it built,

I consider that hot rodding.

now we have to make wheel Wells, if you know what I'm saying.

Dad's going to give me the opportunity

to build these wheel Wells up for him.

This is the first time I'm taking on a fabrication part

by myself where, you know, bending metal and rolling metal

and wheeling metal comes into play.

And I want to make sure I do a decent job.

De... screw a decent job. I want to do a perfect job.

I want to make them great. Do the best job I can.

[ Whirring ]

Chad: Aaron's gone, and he does a lot of fabrication,

making pieces and panels and stuff like that.

Colton is going to have to step up a little bit

because you're going to have to help us.

And that means not only doing what he's doing,

he's going to have to step into Aaron shoes

a little bit and make some patterns.

Patterns take practice,

and practice makes perfect.

Here's a little... gonna use a little trick I remember.

Another way of pattern making the old...

The old man showed me one day.

So I got to make a six-inch piece

to go all the way around here, right?

So my piece I'm going to make the same size

as this piece of tape.

Instead of just measuring,

then when I got to bend the metal,

I'm going to get some taken away from me,

I'm just going to run a piece of tape right around the top

that would take the place of the metal.

And that right there is how long my six-inch piece has to be.

Did you do that on that boy? That a boy!

I'd make it a little bit longer, just in case.

Our team has built you a car like you've never seen before.

I surround myself with stuff that I'm interested in,

and that way there it makes you happy.

As a hot rodder, or anybody that's truly into hot rods,

they collect it all.

Having no money makes you creative.

And when you collect stuff like this, it makes you creative

because you have collected it and you want to use it.

And that's where customizing comes from,

is using what you have.

Wanted to step it up this year, 10th annual rockabilly car show.

So I'm really going to make this car

look like it's worth 50 grand.

I knew I was going to paint it two different colors.

That means you got to paint it twice.

First, we put our base color on, our candy color.

And then we put our clear coat on with Pearl and glass.

Years ago, they would throw glass in their paint jobs

to get that glitter, that metallic-y look.

♪♪

You look in there, you can see, like, it's sparkling,

like how glass will sparkle.

That little... whatever's small enough will go down

through the filter and into the gun.

The clear coat gives it the shine.

Can't say there's not glass in there because there is.

We busted glass in it, put a little in the paint.

It's almost like busting the wine glass over the boat.

There you go, set sail.

[ Whirs, hissing ]

We're 12 hours away from the first car

rolling in here for rockabilly weekend,

and we're still not done with the giveaway car.

So, you know, it's probably going to be

a late night here for us.

1,600 miles away, just for this weekend.
