Love for antique art didn't keep
Pierre Guérande from getting married

- in spite of his age to a young,
beautiful and very modern woman:

of an Egyptian princess!”

“The princess who
wore it was frivolous!”

so well and were a golf champion.”

Denise chases modern pleasures as Pierre

Pretending to work, Pierre moved
the sarcophagus to his office

to study the mummy's clothes
and jewelry.

“Her coquetry led to the death of
a great Prince; is it what scares you?”

“You told me Mrs. de Tramont would be
at the golf club this afternoon.”

“That's a lie, you wanted
to be alone with Maurice Herbert.”

“My poor friend, I'm young,
I need to have fun.

My sweetheart
My sister you met just moved
into a studio in Paris;

Denise changes her plans: before running
errands decides to go to Irène's party.

This house doesn't belong
to any of Denise's friends.

“I will admit the guests.”

She arranged to meet this
Herbert in a clandestine flat.

What's the use of struggling
against such youth.

The Egyptian prince who
mixed poison into cakes

in order to free himself from a
married life without happiness

is reminiscent of the death of a Persian
monarch several centuries later.

This prince who also had no
doubts about his wife's betrayals

didn't want to upset the frivolous
peacefulness of the woman he loved.

Like the Egyptian monarch
whose story I told,

he understood his advanced age only
inspired feelings of peaceful tenderness;

in order to neither suffer nor cause
suffering, he decided to kill himself.

He poured a subtle poison into one of a
hundred hookah he smoked successively.

One day a slave brought him the 75th
hookah meant to cause his death.

He found his release in a flavored puff.
These types of suicides in remote times...

My Dear Denise,

I've obtained indisputable proof of your
guilty feelings for Maurice Herbert.

I love you too much to torment you
with my jealousy and despair,

I also love you too much to turn
a blind eye to your coquetries.

My mature age cannot hope
regaining your youth.

A poisoned cigarette smoked one
day at random will release me.

Something very serious
happened to a display cabinet.”

“Doctor? I would like you

Don't tell him I called you,
I'm so worried.

He is anxious...
This evening? Wonderful...”

“A display cabinet?
Not at all, everything is in order...”

“No doubt she made up this story to
call her accomplice while I was away.

I was bothering her.”

“You are too overworked, my dear
Guérande, always in your books.

As a doctor and a friend,
I prescribe open-air life to you.”

:“He's sharp and young as ever but his
nervous system is tired. This is nothing. ”

In spite of Denise's tenderness,
Pierre continued his fatal resolution

and cigarettes diminished
in the box.

“I don't want you to work anymore.”

“No darling, don't go back into the house.
We'll spend the day driving around.

Would you like some cigarettes?
I'll get some from the box. ”

“Life is so enjoyable,
isn't it Pierre?”

“Denise is always close,
she surrounds me.

It might have been a minor flirtation.
I am the one she loves.”

“Remember the day I saw a

flavoring some cigarettes.”

“Because the bottles were empty and
the poison vial opened, it seemed

you tried bad injections to stimulate
your weakened nervous system.”

I made up the story of the display cabinet
to distract you so I could call the doctor.”

“But Denise, I saw you and Herbert
enter a house I don't know!!...”
