Susie: Courtney came very close to losing her leg.

Tina: I'm gonna be right here.

Susie: Courtney isn't gonna last too much longer.

Susie: Courtney looks like death already.

Tina: She has that way about her,

about making you feel good in the moment.

Courtney: Come on, big girl!

Susie: She was daring. She climbed trees.

Whatever she did,

she was always so happy doing it.

Courtney: Go get it. Mandy: Courtney loved animals.

We always called her, like, the dog whisperer.

Courtney: Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes!

Tina: We have one dog she saved.

She was good with all animals.

Courtney: Oh, my baby!

Oh, my darlings! What are you doin's?

Warren: She'd always say something goofy,

and she'd make everybody in the room laugh.

Even without trying, she'd brighten up everybody's day.

That was courtney.

[dog whining]

warren: Oh, he's a whiny dog, eh?

She missed ya. Courtney: I know she did.

Yeah, I rescued her from windago island.

Like, she was like way out there.

Susie: She's not funny anymore.

She doesn't laugh as often anymore.

We have little moments, not big moments.

The problem is that she's a drug addict.

courtney: Uh, I should definitely wash my hands

before I do this.

courtney: I can do all sorts of [beep].

Hydromorphine, morphine, anything.

♪

♪

courtney: This used to be one of my best veins.

Courtney: It's a rush. It's all through your body,

and then it's like...

I don't know, it's really hard to explain.

You have to do it. You wanna try it?

Mandy: Mm, the new courtney only has one thing on her mind,

which is drugs.

Courtney: Who is it? Rudy: It's me.

Courtney: Oh... What are you up to?

Rudy: I don't know, man. One of those guys is sick.

Well, just go meet him downtown. I said, "meet him downtown?"

warren: Courtney's always had guys,

and she went through her share of bad ones.

Courtney: I found a little bit on the bed there,

and I forgot which spoon I put it in.

Tina: I think she's using anything she can get her

hands on right now.

There's no limit.

She thinks she's gonna die without it.

Courtney: I want to do more and more and more and more.

Like, this room completely full of meds.

That would be my fantasy.

I would do them all.

tina: She's paranoid.

You can see that she's picking a lot.

She's high-risk for diseases.

Warren: She uses dirty needles.

In fact, she did catch flesh-eating disease.

courtney: The nurses wanted to cut off my leg,

and then the surgeon was like "no, she's too young.

"let's try and keep it."

mandy: Like, that's your leg.

Didn't even faze her.

Courtney: One real good shot of "ish" should do the trick.

Tina: It's all about the drug.

That's all... That's all this is about.

tina: I've agreed to give her $100 a week.

Since then, she's managed to get a little bit more out of me.

Tina: I can be at work and get 500 phone calls from her,

and eventually, I have to deal with it.

[knock on door]

courtney: Hello! One second!

Tina: Hey.

Courtney: I'm getting my blood all over the place,

so excuse me.

If you give me a hundred bucks,

I won't ask you for anything ever again.

Susie: I'm like, "tina, you're catering to her lifestyle."

but I can't imagine having a daughter

that you don't know where she is

or if she's living.

Courtney: Look away, mother.

Tina: What if... What if she overdoses,

and she dies?

I don't want that call.

I don't want to get that call.

tina: Courtney, she was one of my easier children.

She seemed happy.

♪

tina: We ended up together really, really young,

and I was getting away from a situation.

I mean, my life growing up wasn't perfect.

Susie: We all grew up with alcoholics.

My father was an alcoholic.

My mother ended up being an alcoholic.

Tina: I had mandy at a really young age.

I was only 18.

I got married at 19.

It wasn't a good relationship.

We weren't healthy for one another.

Tim was... An abusive drinker.

At the end, it was like he would go to work and I would think,

"just die today, like, just die ."

and then I thought, "this is crazy."

at some point, I have to make decision

because I have two girls, and one on the way.

tina: When I left, it was a personal decision.

I didn't have a lot of support, but I left

because I didn't want them to think that was a good way

for somebody to treat a woman.

And then I met warren.

He was good. He was good for me.

He was good for the kids.

susie: Courtney and warren get along really well.

He teased her a lot because she was always a jokester.

She was always funny.

Warren: She kind of was the one I remembered most at first

because she was the most outgoing.

They seemed to all be doing well,

very like, happy, all happy kids.

Courtney in school, she was a very smart girl.

She never had to study.

She was so interested in loving animals.

She really wanted to become a veterinarian.

She wanted to help animals.

Mandy: She was always like goofy,

and like fun to be around.

Hope: We would always play outside.

We lived on an acreage almost,

so we would always be outside doing things.

I remember one time courtney, she was on the dirt bike,

and she was like doing a catwalk, and still holding on.

It was the funniest thing,

and it was just courtney being courtney.

Like... I miss those days.

Courtney: We'd always have a fun time.

We went sledding all the time.

I had an amazing childhood.

tina: Courtney, she had a friend.

He lived in the same neighbourhood as us.

They did everything together.

They were inseparable.

And then, one day,

he was just gone.

tina: I don't know if I even realized

that it had affected her as much as it had.

Warren: She was no longer quite the same

outgoing, bubbly courtney-- more argumentative,

less time with the animals we noticed right away.

Hope: She would start like to skip school and stuff.

Tina: She was hanging out with kids

that you didn't want her to hang out with

because you knew that they were up to no good.

Courtney: I was 10 when I started using drugs.

The first drug I started with was weed.

Ivanna: That's really where it started, and from there,

it kind of escalated.

Tina: So you're trying to control what they do

and where they are.

We had rules, but she wouldn't listen.

She wanted out.

Courtney: So, I moved out,

and I moved into my dad's house.

My dad, he was always my friend,

like and I would rather live where my dad was my friend

than live in a house that I was [beep] hated.

Tina: I probably should have not have let that happen.

And I did.

hope: My dad is an alcoholic,

and he would drink a lot with my sister living there.

Mandy: There's no boundaries.

Courtney: Every night, he would get drunk

and tell me that I'm a [beep] up.

And I'm like "dad, if you keep calling me a [beep] up,

"I'm gonna be a [beep] up."

tina: Courtney's dad had called me and said

that he thought courtney was using

because he had found drugs.

So I picked her up.

At that point, all I wanted to do was get her home.

ivanna: She was clean for a long time.

She wasn't even smoking cigarettes.

Mandy: I went and hung out with her every day

to help her, like, keep her mind off it and stuff.

Courtney: And then I started in school again,

and then just did my ged.

Tina: She seemed to be doing much better.

I actually thought it was going really well.

She held down a job for a little bit.

Warren: She was pulling in some money,

and things were looking good for courtney.

Mandy: She was a good auntie.

I had just had my daughter, tia.

Tia loves auntie courtney.

Tina: She meets a boy.

He was good. He was good for her.

He was a good kid.

We really liked him.

Warren: She dated this young fella for probably four years.

It looked like it was gonna be a pretty serious thing

down the road, and everybody thought the same as I did.

Tina: She got pregnant.

She wanted to keep it and I think

he decided he wasn't ready,

so they ended that pregnancy.

tina: And within months after that,

he had a baby with somebody else.

Warren: That, to me, is really the turning point for courtney.

Courtney: I stopped caring.

I wanted to like numb myself.

[crying]

I want to go.

Tina: Everything went downhill here.

Susie: She just ended up leaving one weekend,

and never came back.

That was it.

She started all over again.

Courtney: They say that you always hate the person that

first shoots you up. Well, I shot myself up.

warren: She lived all over kenora in people's living rooms,

and basements, and she was living in a laundromat.

Tina: I didn't know where she was at.

I had to post on social media

for her to contact,

for her to touch base.

2:30 in the morning, a couple of months ago,

I get a call from somebody saying,

"how fast can you get here?

"because I think courtney needs to go to the hospital."

I phoned my sister to come with me.

When we got there, her leg was

four times the size as it should have been.

Susie: I think it was like two weeks before she even

contacted one of us about her leg.

Tina: She was irrational.

She was screaming and yelling.

We got her in my car.

She almost busted out my window.

Tina: This could have been prevented.

By you.

Courtney: By you . Tina: Me?

Courtney: You, you!

Tina: How did I do that? Courtney: Are you-- [stuttering]

mom...

Courtney: I was [beep] up.

I was seeing [beep], and she knew I was seeing [beep].

I was withdrawing every single day.

Every single day I was withdrawing and withdrawing.

Tina: The doctor came in and said,

"she's got flesh-eating disease

"because probably she's reusing needles."

they want to operate.

It was... It was like a horror movie.

susie: Courtney came very close to losing her leg, very close.

Courtney: I'm blaming you for this, so go away.

It is your fault.

Tina: My sister didn't see

how bad this was until that day.

Susie: When she was in the hospital,

the guy that had come in to take her blood,

she had known him from school,

and she's like, "oh, you're a nurse,"

and she said, "I should have been a nurse."

and she said, "I think I missed my calling."

that's very sad,

because she's so young.

She hasn't missed anything yet.

She still has a chance, right?

Courtney: I got polysporin and [beep].

Rudy: That's crazy.

courtney: The muscle takes a long time to heal,

but this was this, before.

And this was this.

When I woke up, I was so, like, devastated.

It's hard to walk.

Yeah, don't do needles. It's permanent.

Tina: She has nothing.

Like, she's...

She has no relationships with her sisters anymore.

You think courtney's gonna hit rock bottom.

I mean, she could have lost her leg, if not her life.

But it didn't scare her.

It didn't even seem to faze her.

It was like all that was on her mind was the drug.

If courtney doesn't accept treatment, she's gonna die.

Courtney's gonna die.

Tina: Hey, courtney. It's your mother.

I'm on my way over there.

tina: I usually check in on courtney every day.

Especially since she's been out of the hospital,

because I don't want her to go back

to that situation where I don't know where she is.

Tina: Hey, courtney? [knocks on door]

open up.

Can I grab a key for six?

Yeah.

I'll bring it right back, okay? Thank you.

Tina: The minute I know I have to go see her, I get anxious.

My blood pressure, I'm sure, skyrockets.

Tina: Courtney?

Courtney: Go away.

Tina: You're supposed to answer the door.

What's the plan?

Are we gonna go get you some clothes?

Tina: I have to work today,

so we're gonna go downtown for an hour--

courtney: [beep] off! What gives you the right

to come into my room like that?

Tina: I paid the rent. Courtney: [beep] off!

Get out! Tina: How long?

Courtney: [beep], I don't know!

Tina: Well, give me a time, then.

Courtney: Out, get out.

I'm [beep] sleeping.

Tina: You don't look like you're sleeping.

Courtney: I haven't slept in days.

Tina: Let's just go get what you need and go.

Come on, please.

Courtney: Get out! Get the [beep] out!

Tina: How long?

Courtney: [beep] an hour or two.

Tina: An hour? So if I come back in an hour...

Courtney: Leave me alone. Tina: ...Will this be different?

Courtney: [beep] off! Yes!

tina: It's either gonna be a good day,

or it's gonna be a bad day with courtney.

If it's good, she's usually high.

If it's bad, she's usually wanting to get high.

That's how we live.

Courtney: My mom doesn't really know I do this stuff.

Like, I don't think she knows what "ish" is.

She's kind of stupid when it comes to drugs.

courtney: I leave blood in my rigs sometimes,

'cause I have lots of people that steal coming in

and out of where I usually live,

and it's so they don't steal it.

Courtney: If you make it too thick, you could clog arteries.

tina: Court?

Are we better? Courtney: Yeah.

Tina: Are we gonna go get you some clothes?

Tina: How much money do you need?

Tina: Your friend left? Courtney: Which one?

Tina: The one that was here.

Oh, courtney...

What are you looking for?

Tina: Okay.

Well, 'cause we're gonna go there anyway,

and we're gonna go grab you some clothes.

Hope: My mom has two other kids and three grandkids,

so she goes a little bit crazy trying to spread herself thin

sometimes because she's so worried about courtney.

Tina: No, you didn't ask me to get you cigarettes.

Tina: Holy crap, you need to just chill here.

Courtney: I know, I have anxiety!

Tina: 'cause you're gonna give me anxiety.

Tina: You're over your allowance.

I'm not rich, courtney.

If I was rich, we wouldn't even be

having a discussion right now.

Tina: Do you think things just fall into my lap?

Courtney: You get your hair done.

Tina: That's why I work.

Courtney: What's the difference between giving me money

and clothes shopping?

Tina: You know what? If it was giving you money

to eat or to pay rent...

It's giving you money for drugs.

Tina: I let her get to me,

and I've tried to play hardball,

but I'm not good at it.

[crying]

I suck.

Tina: Where am I gonna pick you up, then?

Courtney: I don't know. Tina: Well, I need a plan.

Courtney: Well, park, then. Tina: [beep].

Tina: Don't leave me sit here for an hour.

Tina: What am I giving you?

I thought you were gonna figure it out.

Courtney: 30 bucks?

Tina: I'm gonna be right here.

Susie: Tina needs to be in control of the situation,

but she's not.

I think courtney's the one.

It's almost like courtney is taking tina along with her.

Hope: I haven't seen her in probably like a month or two.

Susie: Oh, yeah, you're staying away?

Hope: Yeah.

Susie: Yeah, no doubt, eh?

She needs to see us anyway.

Yeah.

Tina: Hey! Courtney: What are you doing?

Tina: I'm here to pick you up.

Tina: Because I would like to see you.

Tina: I did not once say that to you.

Susie: How are you doing? Tina: I'm good, you?

Susie: Good.

Congratulations on being a grandma.

Tina: I know, eh? She's cute, eh?

Susie: Cute. Hey!

Courtney: Hey, auntie.

I'm gonna change first and [beep] do my makeup.

Susie: Not even a hug first?

Courtney: See, I brought a friend.

Susie: I see your friend. Courtney: [inaudible]

mandy: No hello to me? Courtney: No, hello, mandy.

We're going on the deck.

Tina: Well, then, come sit with us.

Courtney: That's why I don't want to.

Hope: I feel like everybody just ignores her drug use

when we're all together,

and nobody will say anything like out loud about it,

because we also don't want to scare her off either,

like we want her to stay and be a part of our family.

Courtney: What was I gonna tell you?

Hm... I have anxiety.

Susie: Oh, she's going.

Courtney: Ba-ba-ba-ba!

Warren: You sure? Courtney: Yeah.

Mandy: We never see her, so everyone's like,

"oh, courtney, and courtney, and courtney..."

and like, courtney,

she likes to push us all away.

Susie: The dog must have been happy to see her.

Rudy: She's doing alright, though.

Mandy: Yeah, not bad. Susie: Are you too in her state?

Rudy: I am worse.

Susie: You're worse? What the heck?

Rudy: Yeah.

Susie: How are you supposed to help her

if you're worse than her?

Rudy: I don't know.

Tina: She loses weight every time you see her,

and then you go to hug her, and you have to be careful

because she's so fragile at the back.

Tina: No, that's... That's meth.

Courtney: If you guys make me feel uncomfortable

I'm just gonna leave.

Courtney: When it's like lots of people are looking at me,

that's when it's like really bad anxiety.

I get social anxiety.

Tina: I want you to relax, so...

Courtney: I can't relax. I wanna leave, so just...

Tina: Okay, well, just come and sit, and eat...

Tina: Nobody's looking at you.

Susie: Where's courtney? Tina: She's gonna come out.

Mandy: You never come for dinner anymore,

nothing to do with the family.

Courtney: Yeah, but, like, you guys

don't want to see me like this anyways, so...

Courtney: [beep]. I hate you.

No privacy in this family whatsoever.

And, like, you guys are wondering why--

tina: Don't leave him out here by himself.

Courtney: You guys are wondering why I'm taking forever--

Courtney: Why are you guys waiting for me to eat?

Courtney: Drug use is a weird thing

because everybody wants to help you, but nobody knows how.

So... Yeah.

susie: Courtney, come on out!

Tina: Okay, I'll maybe package them a little more here too.

Hope: Put them in a-- yeah, a container.

Tina: Okay.

Susie: She hurts my heart.

Courtney hurts... Makes me hurt.

susie: I feel sorry for courtney.

I wish she didn't have to go through

what she's going through.

Courtney: I hide because I don't like to be around my family

when I'm like this. [crying]

it hurts them.

courtney: That's probably the only thing that hurts me.

She's ridiculous. She's like,

"I'm not gonna give you money."

I'm like, "[beep] you," and then she's like,

"I'll be there in 10 minutes."

tina: Holy crap, courtney.

Courtney: I know. I feel like [beep].

Tina: Till when? Till Monday.

Tina: I'm not stupid.

I know it was gonna go for drugs.

I'm probably not helping her what I'm doing,

but I'm trying to make sure she's okay.

Tina: I'm out.

Courtney: Love you. Tina: Love you too.

susie: Courtney isn't gonna last too much longer.

Look at what she looks like.

Susie: Courtney looks like death already.

geri: Welcome everybody.

My name is geri bemister,

and I am a certified interventionist,

and a behavioural scientist.

About 13 and a half years ago, I was heavily addicted,

and one foot away from the grave.

My family got together, and did an intervention on me,

and I've been clean and sober ever since.

What we're doing today,

we're going to create a unified front

to tackle courtney's addiction.

We're going to tell her the truth

with love and compassion,

but we're also here for you,

to talk about how this has been for you,

what this has been like for you.

Hope, you want to...?

Hope: She's-- I miss having her there,

and now that I have kids,

it's hard because she's not there.

Yeah.

Mandy: I see how upset and stressed it makes my mom,

and it's hard to watch that.

Geri: What about you, warren, how are you doing?

Warren: Well, it's been hard.

I just miss the old courtney we used to have around the house.

Geri: What about your relationship with tina?

Warren: Oh, it's definitely stressed.

Tina: She's gonna die if she doesn't quit.

Geri: She is.

Tina: It's so hard to watch her go through this,

and it's hard to not feel guilt

when she's throwing it at you.

Geri: Right.

Do we have a lot of addiction in the family?

Tina: Yes.

Susie: Courtney's father is an alcoholic.

Both our parents were alcoholics.

Tina: Mm-hm.

Geri: So, she would have had some kind of a predisposition

likely, to addiction?

And it's not your fault.

And she had some traumas, I understand.

She lost a friend when she was young

in a swimming accident. Mandy: Yeah, her best friend.

Geri: Did she ever get any help for that?

Tina: No.

Geri: And I understand she was in a long-term relationship...

And there was a child that was lost?

Tina: Mm-hm.

They terminated the pregnancy.

It affected her, and she didn't ever address it.

Geri: So, what happens when there's unresolved loss,

and we don't process that,

every time we experience a loss,

we take the loss that was unprocessed,

and it adds and compounds, and it just catches up.

Tina: She went very quickly into

where she is now. Geri: Okay.

We've researched an exceptional treatment centre,

thorpe, just outside of edmonton

that's, in my opinion,

ready and equipped to deal with courtney,

including her medical issues.

Alright.

How is she getting her money to do drugs?

Tina: I give her a lot of money.

Geri: You give her a lot of money?

So, you guys are familiar with the terms "co-dependent,"

"enabling," yes?

And enabling and co-dependency

are fostered by good intention,

and that's what happens, and it's not your fault.

It's what happens.

It's instinctual, and right now, what's been happening

is we've been enabling courtney...

To death.

So, courtney's in a hotel that you're paying for.

Tina: Yup.

Geri: Enabling 101. Tina: Yup.

Geri: That can no longer continue, as of tomorrow.

Courtney's in control of everything.

She controls your moods,

she controls some of your finances.

Mom is completely addicted to courtney's addiction.

And that stops today.

Geri: So, what's happening is you can see the parallels

between courtney being addicted to substance,

and mom being addicted to courtney's addiction.

Geri: So, the program where we're sending courtney at thorpe

has a family program.

Would you agree to go to the family program at thorpe?

Tina: Well... I know I need some work.

Courtney's not the only one.

Geri: Okay. So, yes, you'll get some help?

Tina: Yeah.

Geri: Good.

The more that you guys take care of yourself

and the stronger that you become,

the better support you're gonna be for her.

Warren: She knows we care, and that we want to help her.

Geri: And she uses that against you guys to get what she wants.

Warren: Yes, she does.

She twists it around, and throws it back at us.

Geri: And that's part of the addiction, the manipulation.

Courtney doesn't believe necessarily that she's sick,

but she has to believe

that you will not do anything

after tomorrow.

And what about tim?

Is that a place where she can escape to?

Tina: No. Geri: Okay.

Tina: The last time, he didn't want her there.

I don't think he would take her back.

Geri: Good.

If she senses for one second that you'll cave,

she won't go to treatment.

I'm not gonna lie to you guys.

What you're gonna have to do tomorrow

is going to be the hardest thing you're ever gonna

have to do in your life.

But remember, you're not turning your back on your family member.

You're turning your back on the illness,

and what we're gonna do is get her back.

Tina: Okay.

Geri: I just want to remind everybody, take a deep breath.

Tina: I'm ready. Geri: Okay.

Hope: "courtney, this addiction,

"it has put so much stress on our family.

"not having you a part of my kids' life has really hurt me

"because I know what a great auntie you could be to them.

"I love you, courtney, and it kills me to watch

"this addiction take over your life."

courtney: You guys haven't watched me.

Mandy: "dear courtney, my beautiful sister.

"it absolutely kills me

"to think of the battle you must be fighting within yourself.

"you can do this because you're strong and brave.

"will you accept this help?"

warren: "courtney, I love you, kid.

"trying to write everything in a letter is hard.

"I know to you I've only been your stepdad.

"I've always thought of you as my daughter.

"after finding out about your addiction,
