Anyone can build a pool,

but these pools
are a little slice of paradise.

LUCAS: Today,
I'm in Huntsville, Alabama,

which is about 10 hours

away from my home
in Sarasota, Florida.

It's not often
that we get to build pools

out of state,
so this is really exciting.

I'm going to meet
Scott and Diane Schumacher,

they're both retired
military veterans.

They've been saving for their
dream pool for over 15 years.

[ Doorbell chimes ]

-Hello.
-Hey, good morning.

I'm Lucas.
-Lucas, come on in,

let me get my wife,
and show you around.

Sounds great.

LUCAS: Wow. Guys,
this is really nice back here.

This is a beautiful,
open canvas.

What are some of the features
you're thinking about?

I try to swim
at least a mile a day.

-Okay.
-So want a pool

that's long enough
that I can swim in it.

-Yep.
-Some type of maybe sun deck,
a hot tub.

Problem with that,
though, is it gets cold
here in the wintertime.

So I'd like to kind of enclose
that in a rock feature.

That's a good idea
to help keep the heat in

so it just
extends that period of time

that you can actually use it.
-Right.

What I want is very simple.

I want a hammock.

I want some shade
over it

so I can sit under that shade

and read my book
and fall asleep. Please.

I think that's
a simple enough request.

Well, maybe you guys
can relax for a little bit

and I'll start kind of
drawing everything out.

-All right.
-I'll see you in a little bit.

Scott and Diane have been
waiting 15 years for this pool.

And I want to make sure
that the wait was worth it.

As I'm in that backyard,

I got a good feeling
for what I want to do.

And I can't wait to see
what they think.

All right, guys,
you ready?

I got some good ideas
going around.

I'm thinking I'll have the pool
as long as we can

but do swim jets,
so that way

you can swim in place, Scott,
for as long as you want.

This would be a cool area to do
your sun shelf area,

the swim-up bar, eating area,
the outdoor kitchen,

a hammock area.

That's what I wanna see.

So almost
kind of dead center

to the yard,
do a big grotto.

Then not only
do you have the grotto,

but a whole water wall.
-Nice.

And inside the grotto,
like a 10-Foot spa.

So that means you need at least
a 12-Foot grotto

to cover all that.

And that's basically like
the size of this room we're in.

Oh, wow.

LUCAS:
I've seen some big grotto rocks,

but I've never found a rock

that I think would be
big enough for this build.

So I have my work
cut out for me.

-Do I have your blessing
to keep moving forward?
-Yes.

-You do.
-Awesome, awesome.

To get started,
all I really need to do

is dig out the shape
of the pool.

So for that, I just need Crash.

Oh, boy!

This dirt is just tough.

We're definitely
not in Florida anymore.

Crash and I have found
that digging

in this infamous
Alabama red clay

is way harder
than the Florida sand.

I mean, we're in our second day
of digging

what would normally
take us one day.

So, guys,
what do you think?

Can you kind of
visualize it now?

DIANE: I can, however,

making sure
that I've got some kind of shade

over my hammock

and perhaps
over the kitchen area

as well is super important.

I'm a cancer survivor

of multiple different types
of cancer,

one of those
being skin cancer.

Definitely,
we need to create shade for you.

I want Diane
to feel like the pool's for her.

She doesn't just have her one
area off to the side with shade.

I want to do
some portable umbrellas

so she feels
like she can kind of go

wherever she needs to go.

Obviously, now
hearing Diane's story,

kind of raised the stakes for me
a little bit more.

But I know in my heart

they're gonna absolutely love it
when it's all done.

It took some time, but the shape
of the pool is now dug out.

So the next steps
are to form up everything.

Then we need to put in
a lot of rebar.

We're also
laying all the plumbing

for the pumps,
the drains, the waterfalls,

and, of course,
Scott's swim jet.

With everything in place,

our next step is to shoot
the Gunite pool shell.

This thing's a huge pool.

We are gonna spray
about 80 yards today.

Crash and I have been up here
in Alabama for a few weeks,

but not it's time
to start rock work,

so I brought the rest
of my crew up here.

Welcome to Huntsville,
Alabama, team.

-Oh, it's huge!
-Awesome!

The focal point of this whole
design is that massive grotto.

JANE: I don't know
where you're gonna find

a grotto lid large enough
to cover that span.

Yeah, that's my biggest
problem right now.

So I'm almost thinking
I may need to maybe do

some artificial rock.
-What?

-Uh...
-Oh, that will look ugly.

I don't know what else I can do
to safely span the whole top.

We're known
for using natural, real rocks.

Now we're
doing manufactured rock.

I'm not too excited
about using artificial rock,

but even if I could find
a rock big enough,

I'm worried about safety
and all the weight.

But right now, I think
it's one of my best options.

I don't know if it will
work, but I'm hoping
I can figure it out.

Speaking of that,
I think I hear the truck coming.

So let's start unloading
and getting ready.

Oh, good!

Our typical job has
about 48 ton of stone in it.

For the Schumacher build,
we're gonna need 96 tons.

¶¶

Sunshine's mixing the mud.

What a man!

Woman and old man
are spotting me

while I'm in the tractor,
setting big rocks.

JANE:
Come down a little more.

¶¶

I'm getting ready
to set this two-ton grotto lid.

What was that?
-Careful, man.

Don't jerk.
I heard the straps rip.

Okay, hold it up.

I need it to hang over the front

as much as the back.

Tip it into place.
Nice.

Okay. Wow.

I think
this is pretty darn good.

Yeah. Level and balanced
on the columns.

I have the front
of the grotto built,

but I can't go any further
without the artificial stone.

I found this factory
in Massachusetts

who's known for making truly
realistic rocks.

Until that arrives, we'll get
moving on

the smaller grottoes
and the water wall.

JANE: I like
this little cutout here.

It almost falls right
in the middle of your seat.

-Perfect.
-For the last
of these mini grottos,

we're building this cool
little one-seat area

that will be hidden
by the waterfall.

[ Imitates
water whooshing ]

Oh, my grotto's here!

Man, that looks so good!

Instant grotto?

This is all molded off of
natural stone.

The inside of this is molded
off an actual cliff.

This top rock right here
is molded

off real Tennessee grotto stone.

I think it's gonna
put me out of business.

This whole actual cave structure
weighs less than one ton,

but it's gonna be able
to support

tons and tons of rock
all around it.

You ready, Crash?
-I'm ready? Are you?

LUCAS:
Go ahead and lift it.

Even though
this fabricated stone

is just a great solution
for this project,

it'll never replace
my natural stone.

For one,
it's actually more expensive,

plus, there's just a lot
of planning that takes place,

it doesn't allow me
to have that free-flowing spirit

that a natural stone has.

JANE:
Come down slow.

LUCAS: Just go down like this.

Whoop. What's it hitting?
-Hold it!

Just caught on that side
there.

We got to cut it back
to this rock.

Lift it up and bring it back
to him so we can cut this.

All right,
let's try it again.

-Ready?
-We're good to go!

LUCAS:
I hope two times is the charm.

All right,
start coming down slow.

CHRIS: We landed.

-This looks so good.
That wasn't so bad.
-Whoo!

-King of the world.
-We got it.

By using this fabricated stone
as basically a form,

I'm able to anchor
the whole grotto

to the pool shell with concrete.

Now that we have this grotto
into place,

it's time to start
getting our natural boulders

placed around it and really
kind of tie it all together.

Look how it fits in here.
Look how beautiful that is.

Wow.
-Everything
keeps getting bigger.

So now we got to get started
on this outdoor kitchen.

The first step
is laying out the foundation,

which is actually gonna be
a stamped concrete

that looks like flagstone.

This is gonna be a place
where Scott's gonna

spend a lot of time
because he loves to cook.

Next, we lay in our countertops.

For this rustic kitchen,

we're making custom ones
on site out of flagstone.

Because Scott's so tall,

we're making one area
that's higher just for him.

Oh, sweet, guys.
Look, our barn planks are here.

To give the outdoor kitchen
a more rustic feel,

I ordered custom
artificial-wood planks.

Same material
that our grotto was made out of.

JANE: Wow! That looks like
the real thing.

But it will never rot
because it's all polymer-based.

And it's all hands on deck

to finish this
kitchen and pool area.

We're really taking this outdoor
kitchen to the next level.

Fridge for drinks,
a brand-new smoker and grill.

WOMAN: And to finish things off,
we're giving Diane

a lot of extra shade
to complete her paradise.

LUCAS: I'm moments away
from showing the Schumachers

their brand-new pool.

And I can't wait to see the look
on their faces.

How are you guys feeling?
-I'm excited.

I really am.
-I am excited, too.

I kind of feel
butterflies,

and I just
want to see what it is.

And it's been a long time.
-Yeah, long time coming.

LUCAS:
Hold each other's hands.

and beyond my dreams.

my favorite waterfall.

It's just huge
and beautiful

and so much undulation
and character.

Then we have
four grottos.

Oh, just enough
for all the grandsons.

They'll have a great time

sitting and jumping
and crawling.

We have all kinds
of little seating in there.

A swim-up bar over there.

-Yeah.
-There's also the sun shelf.

Diane, I know shade
was a huge deal for you.

So you got shade
all over the place.

You got shade
on the sun shelf.

Of course, we have the pergola
that's shaded, as well.

DIANE: Right.

And we came up with a surprise
for you.

We wanted you to have a day bed
where you could sit and read.

And during the day,
you've got shade.

DIANE: So I had asked
for just a hammock,

and instead, they've gone
out of their way

and made that for me.

Perfect. Perfect.

Ah, yep!
I like it.

I am gonna take naps
out there, I know it.

Well, Scott, come check out
your outdoor kitchen.

SCOTT: That looks great.

I even made the top higher
for you because you're tall.

-That's terrific.
-There's so much rock
everywhere,

and I really wanted
to soften it up

and give a little bit
of a rustic-wood look.

-Is that gonna last?
-It's actually artificial.

It'll never rot.
-Wow.

It's got so much character
to it, too. I love it.

So, here you guys are,

there's your hot tub
in the grotto.

DIANE: With that water
dripping in there,

it looks like a real cave.

Very cool, very cool.

And looking at this now,
can you tell

which rock is
the fabricated one?

Absolutely not.

They just blend so perfectly
with the natural stone,

it just looks
all natural.

It's all heating up.

You can see the steam,
it's nice and warm in there.

I'm just so emotionally --

You're pleased.

I really never dreamed of this.
This is stupendous.

Scott and Diane were so happy,

they decided to have this big
party despite the cold weather.

They had all their friends,
their family.

They did you an awesome job,
man. This is awesome.

To make a family
like this so happy,

I mean, it just melts my heart.

¶¶

In San Antonio, Texas, Monica
and Bill Hall have a busy family

and are looking for ways
to spend quality time together.

Wow!

WOMAN: We built this house
six years ago with the intention

of having a wonderful place
to raise our family,

but also looking for a gathering
spot for friends and family.

MAN: We wanted to expand
the back porch.

And so we started
putting in a cabana.

WOMAN:
We did want to add the pool in,

but we weren't quite ready
to do it

until we put the slab down.

And then we decided,
let's just go for it.

The yard's already obliterated.

Might as well --
Do the pool.

Go all the way and do the pool.

LUCAS: Since the slab
has already been poured.

It will be incorporated into
the Halls' new backyard getaway

as an outdoor living room.

Directly off the living room

will be a huge spa that will
have a spill over into the pool.

To the side of the spa
will be the new swim up bar,

with seating on both sides
and a large kitchen.

The pool will feature
a massive waterfall

with a hidden grotto
and a wraparound slide.

The whole backyard
will have plenty of seating

and entertaining space.

It all starts with the big dig.

There quickly through
the top layer,

but there's a rocky layer below.

While they continue to dig
the pool, they can multitask.

The wood forms are being built
and loads of gravel bags

are used to support the eventual
concrete walls of the pool.

With the gravel and rebar in,
the pool gets shotcrete.

And this family oasis
is finally taking shape.

The pool edge is being lined
with bullnose coping.

Once the mortar is dry,
they finish

by grouting each joint.

The Halls' outdoor kitchen
is progressing

and the flagstone
is being installed.

The Halls wanted
the outdoor kitchen

to feel natural and organic.

So an Idaho gold flagstone
does the job nicely.

Back in the pool,
the bar stool holes

for the awesome swim up bar
are being drilled out.

The bar stools will be removable

for when the kids
want more swimming area.

The holes are perfectly
positioned

and this pool is one step closer
to being done.

As this project
crosses the finish line.

The Halls are anxious
to see their new pool.

We've got the deep end
down there, too,

so you'll be able
to climb on top

and do some cannonballs

Look at the stone.

Look how the slide
just comes out of the rocks.

That is amazing
that you all did that.

We kind of built it in
with the flagstone

to kind of give it
more of a natural look.

MONICA: This pool is so big
for our family.

But what it's also done
is it's finally allowed us

to take entertaining
to the next level.

I think it's going to change
how we live.

It's going to be
a whole new life.

LUCAS: And a life with the pool

In Nashville, Tennessee, Teresa
and Greg Hagan are warming up

to the idea of a backyard pool
for their two daughters.

Whaddya think,

Is it hot?

We lived in Chicago
the last 18 years

and we just moved to Nashville
a little less than a year ago.

We've wanted a pool for a while,
but the season is so short

in Chicago,
it wasn't really worth it.

But it is worth the investment
to do it down here.

It's stifling hot here.

LUCAS: The Hagans
are going to have a great way

to cool off
in the summer with this pool.

Their backyard is on a slope,

so there will be four
different levels of this pool,

starting with the bottom level

and the outdoor fireplace
and entertaining area.

The back steps will be removed
to make the area

seem twice as big.

The second level will be
the large pool

with a vanishing edge
and two fire pots.

The third level will have
the spa

and the beautiful rain wall
to help minimize the road noise.

The fourth level up the stairs

will be a whole new outdoor
entertaining area,

complete with a grill
and seating.

The crew begins digging
the foundation

to form this pool's unique
four level design.

¶¶

They finish digging out
the foundation

and build up the plywood boards
for support.

The rebar and plumbing
are installed.

And this pool
is ready for Gunite.

The workers do a great job
forming the walls

in the bottom
of the pool and hot tub.

A beautiful glass tile is being
installed around the waterline,

adding a pop of color
against the rustic stone coping.

The old staircase to the second
story porch has been removed

before you couldn't even see
the space under the porch.

And now the whole area
is opened up

and can be a feature
of the backyard.

Wasn't the kitchen supposed to
be right there?

It was, it was --
by the time

we put the staircase
and the air conditioners

were gonna be under that,
we wanted to make sure

we had enough room
for everything to breathe.

LUCAS:
This project has gone so well,

but as they progress from
the 3D renderings to reality,

it's become obvious that
there just isn't enough space

for the grill on the deck.

If we can't put it up here
like they originally wanted to.

I mean, the next best option,
in my opinion,

is gonna be down there
in the open area.

I think you're right.

¶¶

With the plans for moving
the grill finalized,

the crew tackles
the custom rain wall.

This rain wall will serve
a dual purpose

as a unique focal point
around the fire pit

and to help drown out
the traffic noise

from the nearby road.

Now that the rain wall
has gone up,

they need to add
in the landscaping,

finish the fire pots,
and plaster the pool.

Finally, the day has come
and the pool is ready

for the Hagan family.

-All right, you guys ready?

Wow, this is amazing.

This is unreal.

LUCAS: It's time for the Hagans
to see their new pool.

You transformed an impossible

pretty small,

so I really have to plan out

how we can make it feel
bigger than it is.

It's definitely
a big wish list,

but I think I pretty much
got all of it.

Typically, you'll see the pool,

then maybe 3 foot of deck
on the back side,

then the footer for the cage,

so now you're losing 4 foot
that you are never gonna use.

So, my idea is you use
the beam of the pool

as the footer for the cage,

so now you're getting
4 more feet of usable space

and in just in front of that,
a hot tub spa.

What if we did this wall
that's the beam of the pool,

make it elevated
3 to 4 feet,

and then what we can do
is like a white beach pebble

so that way
it's more contemporary.

I love the idea.

Yeah.

You guys also
mentioned wanting a shower.

I'm thinking kind of
right outside your bedroom

in this little nook.

Well, most of the time,
if we're here by ourselves,

how many times are we gonna use
the outdoor shower?

We can just have this open space
more as a sitting area,

and then the spa
could be brought over

a little bit of more
and make this like a Zen area

where it's a little quiet
in the morning,

you're gonna hear the water
and the waterfall.

Okay.

I think
that's a good revision.

Cool. I like that.

Also, you guys,
there is quite a long list

of appliances you wanted
to put in your kitchen.

You have an ice maker, sink,

kegerator, fridge, grill.

Well, you know,
I'm really loving this plan.

You guys have had
some great input.

I mean is this something
you want to move forward with?

The Gehrisch's back yard is
a blank canvas.

And with no old pool or
hardscapes to rip out,

we have this pool dug out
in no time.

Next we will install the rebar.

Lay out the plumbing, and then
it's time for Gunite.

It takes a full day
to shoot the Gunite.

After that, we just have to wait
until it's cured,

so we can start putting
the tiles and other stuff on.

All right.
It's looking good.

All right, guys, basically
you know we're ready

to start prepping
for all our tile work.

The beach pebble comes first.

We have to use thinset to bond
the pebbles

to the concrete wall.

A thin, smooth application
ensures the pebbles

are all even across the wall.

LUCAS: I know the Gehrisches
want a small,

Zen-Like seating area,

but I want
to take it up a notch.

I'm gonna use one of
my special glacial boulders

from my private collection
to create a water feature.

The first thing that
we have to do is dig a hole

for the basin that will
catch the water.

¶¶

Here's
our water feature.

I hope it fits in.

¶¶

Get in there.

You rascal.

¶¶

Hey, old man.

There is a lot
of grouting here to do.

[ Chuckling ] There is
a lot of grouting to do.

Let's get to work.

LUCAS: The grout will act as
a sealant

over all the beach pebble
and lock everything in place

for years to come.

All right, in the wall.

LUCAS: To remove
the excess grout,

we have to use a brush
or a pointer

to clean around
every single pebble.

¶¶

So, the Gehrisches want
a Key West contemporary feel

to their backyard pool,
so in keeping with that theme,

we picked out
a silver travertine

with a platinum grout.

It's gonna look great.

Once the tile is finished,

the rest of this build.

The new cage is being installed

and the beautiful dark blue
interior finish

is going into the pool.

Once the interior finish is set,

we can put the water
in the pool.

Ooh, rockwork.

Projects like the Gehrisches'
are exactly why I hoard rocks.

Only one rock.

I heard enough bellyaching
about the little pebble tiles.

Here's a challenge --

2,000-Pound glacial boulder
we got to get in there by hand.

And we have to core drill
the whole thing

for the water feature.
Oh, man.

These glacial
boulders are super dense,

so when you're drilling it,

it's very strenuous
and it goes very slow.

Well this kitchen
is really intricate,

there's a kegerator,
the refrigerator.

There are so many things
going on,

that this countertop
had to be fabricated

to fit each and every little
one of them items.

And TV coming in through.

We've got two TVs going in,

a custom art piece,

finishing that outdoor kitchen,

and of course, adding
that Lucas Lagoons flare

wherever we can.

LUCAS: This is a pool
where the fun doesn't end.

The central feature
for this pool

is a tiki themed swim up
wet bar.

It's perfect
for their large family.

Directly in front of the bar
will be this large,

relaxing waterfall
with the grotto.

The shallow end of the pool
will feature the elevated spa

with the spill over
Infinity Edge.

And this will be a smart pool

where every feature
from the waterfall

to the lighting
can be controlled by your phone.

Lastly, a putting green will
finish off the yard for John.

It's time to tackle this pool.

The excavator is working double
time removing tons of dirt.

The swim up bar is framed out
and lined up

perfectly with the grotto.

The wet bar is going to be

one of the most challenging
features of this project.

It's got to be solid,
sturdy, and not leak.

The crew turns to spraying
in the Gunite.

In no time the entire pool
is covered

and the shaping can begin.

Tile is going in at the water's
edge, and the paved stone

coping that was
originally planned for the spa

is being swapped out
with the same tile.

We're gonna have to follow
that radius.

And it's hard to do square tiles
to follow a round radius.

Yeah, the tile.

Tile saw is definitely going to
get some use today.

MAN: Absolutely.

Looking good. Let's keep going.

The Gunite is done
and the tile is in.

Now they move on to the decking.

The pavers go down fast

and it's on
to plastering the pool.

They've got everything
finally done.

The Harristons now have
