The factory where I'm working
is very, very difficult.

It's not easy at all.

..passionate about what they do for
a living...

It's not so much a job,
it's a way of life.

I've always wanted to do that.

..to decide whose is the toughest.

We're all looking at that
envelope over there, aren't we?

This time, a sausage factory
supervisor,

bingo show host and head gardener
go head-to-head.

I'm determined to win.

Not just for me, but for every
other gardener out there

who works 12-hour back-breaking
days.

Today, three people
with very different jobs.

Supervisor Mica has been seasoning
and stuffing sausages

at a Yorkshire factory for the past
two and a half years.

So, to succeed at this job,
you've got to be fast on your feet.

Fast with your hands.

You have to be on it all the time.

Show host Rob started calling
numbers

at his local bingo hall
two years ago.

I'm very proud to be
a bingo show host

cos I like making people laugh.
I like making people smile.

And it's a way that I can do that.

A duck and a crutch, number 27.

Some people at the bingo
like to compare me to Mr Sheeran.

Yeah, pretty much every day.

Head gardener Dan is responsible
for maintaining the manicured

grounds of a historic stately home
near Doncaster.

On a daily basis, I can go
from digging out

20 tonnes of compost
into a bed,

to then coming up and delivering
a five-year management plan

to the board of directors.

And I'd put it up there

as one of the toughest jobs.

Rob and Dan have no idea what job
they'll be doing first...

Oh, no.

..but they're about to find out.

Let's go for it.

Today...

I've just got like a really
sicky feeling in my stomach.

..you're going to be...

I have no idea what you do
in a sausage factory.

What's going to shock them the most
will be the sensory overload

with the different sounds, smells
and the temperature in there.

It's 6am in North Yorkshire
and factory supervisor Mica

is already clocking in
for her seven-hour shift. Morning!

A sausage factory supervisor
can earn an average

of ?26,000 a year.

Mica works for a family-run factory

where she's responsible
for quality control.

So, today, we've got
half a million sausages

to get out there today
to get to store.

It's so crucial to make sure
we keep that speed.

Keep those lines fed.

If you don't,
the sausage line stops.

Hi, guys! Hello. I'm Mica.

I'm Rob. Come on in.

So, today, you're going to be
working a little bit of mixing,

weighing out meat, seasonings,

then you're going to be packing
some sausages

and then we'll be sleeving, boxing
and getting them ready for stores.

How are you guys feeling about this?

I have done a little bit of factory
work in the past,

so I'm pretty confident
I can keep up.

I'm a little bit nervous.

I've never done anything
like this before,

so I've never made a sausage
in my life.

It's now 7am.
Having put their uniform on...

Are we going to rob a bank?

..the novices head to
the factory floor

to start making sausages.

So, guys, this is the factory
and behind us is the mixing rooms.

This is where you're going to start.

The production line makes the mix,
places sausages in packs,

and then into cardboard sleeves.

A hold-up at any step of the process
has a knock-on effect,

so working fast is essential.

I'm used to being outdoors

and kind of surrounded by nature

and the noise in here is really
intense.

It feels like quite an intense
atmosphere

with the machines running

and all the...all
the people doing different jobs

and trying to make sure they're
feeding their machines on time.

Most of the meat in the factory
is chicken.

Rob needs to unpack and grind
ten-kilo blocks of frozen meat

so it's ready for the sausage mix.

Let's get loaded up. Watch your
fingers! Watch your fingers!

At the next stage,
the chopped frozen meat

will be combined with fresh meat

to keep the mix at a safe
eight degrees,

but it needs to be fed in carefully.

Overloading the grinder
sends meat back,

slowing the process down.

The chicken's certainly firing
back at the minute.

It is quite intense.

It is really intense.

And there's one gone!

With the first container filled,

Rob heads over to the mixer

where head gardener Dan's
been put in charge.

Careful!

It's his job to season the chicken
sausage mix

with a secret blend of herbs
and spices.

Try and get it in the bowl,
not outside the bowl.

I tried to go a bit in,
but it didn't quite work.

If it's left any longer,
it's going to be too chewy.

So we need to get that out.

I've got to kind of sweep
this bad boy in there.

Careful, it's going on the floor
there.

Too much. The line is waiting for it
so we need to hurry up.

Dan's seasoned meat will now be
loaded into a machine

which puts the sausage skins on.

He may be used to wheelbarrows,
but this is a different matter.

You have to push it over there.

I thought it was going to be quite
easy because it's on wheels.

I was surprised by the actual
weight.

To keep the line running,
Rob needs to restock

with meat from the freezer.

Having won his battle
with the chicken,

he's now fighting the forklift.

I haven't got my driver's license.

You definitely need more practice at
this. Yeah!

Yeah.With the line waiting
for more meat,

Rob needs to get his forklift
under control

to keep production flowing.

that was a good experience.

I've never done that before.

I don't think I'll be doing it again

It's 10am, and with
their sausage meat in the skins,

the first-time factory workers
move on to packing.

OK, so what I need you two guys
to do

is put ten sausages in a pack
and put it on the conveyor belt.

Now, these guys are working
at at least 35 packs a minute.

If you don't keep up with that,

these guys, they're not going to
like you.

We'll do our best.

We don't want to upset everybody.

Feel like this is not going
to be my forte in life.

I think I might be a tad slow.

This one, on the other hand,
I think is going to struggle.

I've never seen as many sausages
as this in my whole life.

It's a lot harder than it looks.

A lot of the same movements,
the same muscle movements.

I think I'm a bit of a perfectionist
and I'm trying to, like, figure out

the neatest way of doing everything.

their 35-packs-a-minute target,

Mica pulls them
off the production line.

I think the 35 packs a minute's
a myth, to be honest.

There's just no way

that you could get them sausages in
there quick enough.

With only two hours left in the day,

it's time for Rob and Dan
to face their toughest challenge -

putting cardboard sleeves
on the packs of sausages.

At this stage, you're going
to have to work your fastest

you've ever worked today, OK? OK.

With only Dan and Rob doing the job
and 35 packs arriving every minute,

they need to work quickly
to prevent a backlog.

So if we do get a pile-up,
we have to shout through the window

and get the whole line to stop.

And this is something we never,
ever want to do.

There's a lot of sausages
flying out there,

so it'll be interesting
to see how we get on.

I'm feeling confident
about the sleeving part
of this job, definitely.

If it's anything like the packing
of the sausages and the fiddliness,

I think I'll be OK.

not pushed right to the bottom.

it was going to pile up so quick.

that the guys had that
we're struggling with.

I've never seen a pile this big.

This is really hard.

I think it was more challenging
than anticipated.

Yeah. Good. I think the second
half was a really fast pace.

We worked as a team to try and get
those speeds that we require.

And I think they found
that very hard.

It's not an easy job.

But it's the scores Rob and Dan put
on their feedback forms that count.

They'll rate the working conditions

and the mental and physical demands
out of ten.

The higher the number,
the harder the job,

with a combined maximum
score of 60.

I think the job was
mentally challenging

due to the high speed demand.

You know, processing the same
thing over and over again.

So I'm going to give
mental demands a six.

There's a lot of heavy lifting.

You know, there's
the one tonne pallets,

lots of lifting
of the pallets on to the machine.

And there's lots of repetitive
hand movements.

For the physical demands, I'm
going to score this one a seven.

They'll all find out
their total scores

and who's won the ?1,000 prize
on the final day.

Rob hasn't spoken about his job
to Dan and Mica,

so they have no idea what
they'll be doing next.

just because I know how serious

before things get really

After an eight-hour shift,

Rob's called time on Dan
and Mica's day as show hosts.

It's just so stressful.

You know, I feel
like I need to go to bed.

And not because it's physical, but
because it's so mentally draining.

Rob set out to prove
how hard his job is.

I think they have had quite
a bit of a shock coming here.

The confidence was great,

just the timing and the bits
in between that weren't so great,

to be honest with you.

But it's what Dan and Mica put on

I think the mental aspects
of the job was the most difficult.

I was kind of expecting
just to pull a ball out,

I know nothing about plants.

I would hate to be thrown
into anything that involved

any sort of muck on my hands.

I'm quite a clean person.

I don't like getting my hands mucky.

I couldn't tell you what was
a weed and what is a flower.

The workers will find it
really tough today

because we're going to be doing
a series of different jobs

which will carry on through
any weather.

Whatever it throws at us,

we'll have to keep going.
That's how we work.

It's 7:30am at Brodsworth Hall
in South Yorkshire.

Built in 1861,
this Victorian country house

is surrounded by manicured lawns,

complete with fabulous flowerbeds,
a topiary garden

and even a lawn for archery.

I think the main thing they're
going to find difficult today

is the quality of finish
that's going to be expected.

Head gardener Dan
leads a team of 40 people

to keep these 18 acres of period
gardens pristine and perfect.

Nature never stops. Trees continue
to grow. Shrubs keep growing.

And we've got to
keep on top of that

and make sure it's
absolutely perfect

every time our visitors
step through that door.

I think he'll be having us cutting
hedges and digging things out.

Digging some manure, I think. Yeah.
Definitely.

OK. So a quick run through.

Today, we're going to be going down
on to the target garden

and that's going to be removing
the summer bedding and replanting
with the spring bedding.

Once we've done not, we'll be
then moving on to topiary.

A bit of shaping
with the bushes in there.

Then we're going on
to a garden tour.

So, we're going to have to learn
the history of the site,

we're going to need to know
the plants,

you'll need to know
about the gardens.

I'm excited for today. I'm not too
keen on getting too mucky,
but I will give it a go.

Well, good luck with keeping

An experienced head gardener like
Dan could earn up to ?30,000 a year.

But today he needs to get
back to basics,

teaching two very green gardeners.

the summer bedding

The reality of working
on a heritage estate,

there's a lot of work to do.

It's physical and it's
mentally tiring as well.

As the last plant goes in,

it's time for Dan to assess
his trainees' work.

There's still a little bit of
a gap in certain areas,

but I'd say 90% of it's bang on.

And it's your first attempt
at doing this. Yeah.

And what I can say today,
you've given everything 100%
and that's all I can ask for.

with what you've done.

I did kind of get stuck
in the mud today, yeah.

Very dirty hands, very dirty
knees, a dirty face.

The planting really
wasn't my cup of tea.

I didn't quite enjoy that.

But the day's only
just getting going.

Brodsworth Hall hosts one of the
country's most ornate
topiary gardens,

where over 1,000 trees
are sheared into meticulous shapes.

So, the skill is with topiary,

if one of the shrubs is not matching
the one on the other side

it completely throws the
symmetry of the garden out.

So it's vital that we get
the lines perfect.

I think you'll definitely need to
keep an eye on what we're doing

because I don't want to mess up...

It takes three years of training
to master the art of topiary,

so these novices will
have their work cut out

to make their shaped bushes
look perfect.

So what we're trying to do
is find a line,

so you want to be kind of observing
down the shrub all the time.

Get your line in there.

You want to get a really nice,
smooth finish eventually on there

Then I'm going to come in
like this.

It's going to be something
very different that I've
never done before,

so it should be quite
a learning curve for me today.

This 140-year-old topiary garden has
been under restoration since 1995.

After a health and safety briefing,

Dan asks them to cut a yew tree
in 20 minutes.

Close them quite firm. Ooh!
That's it.

Then drop your visor down.

One slip of the shears could undo
25 years of meticulous horticulture.

I don't want to ruin
Dan's pride and joy,

so I'm feeling a bit nervous now.

Just a few minutes in,
the pair are already struggling

with the precision required.

This is difficult
to get this straight line.

I don't think I've even been
going for ten minutes yet.

I'm dying!

And it looks like Rob's lines are
dipping below Dan's high standards.

That's it. Just be careful
not to dip too much. Right.

Obviously when we're doing this,
you've got to be kind of a
bit more up there, level.

It is a lot harder than I thought
it was going to be. Definitely.

I think it's about the confidence
in using the trimmer.

It is quite a bit of kit,
to be honest.

You really want to be getting
all the sides done now

in next five minutes. OK.

Max now, ten minutes,
to get all this done. OK.

With time running out, the trainee
gardeners need to pick up the pace

without losing
the precision required.

All right. Maybe there's
a little bit of a curve.

Maybe it needs a little bit
of work.

It does take it out of you,
doesn't it?

I think I might get Dan
to finish that one off!

It's now 3pm and with
the trainee topiarists

taking 45 minutes to do their trees,
Dan calls time.

Obviously, speed was kind of
the biggest issue, really.

You know, for the amount of time
we've spent on these,

we probably would have done about
five or six of these pieces
and cleared it up as well.

That was quite hard as well, using
the extension right above your head.

Yeah, that was very difficult.

It was really tricky
getting the symmetry right.

Obviously, I was doing a triangle
and it sounds really easy.

It's really not.

Yeah, I imagine
a full nine-hour shift

of just hedge trimming all day
would take it out of you.

Using the big extendable one

was quite the task in itself,
to be honest.

Having already done six hours
hard graft,

the pair now need to master
a totally different skill -

preparing for a visitors' tour
of the garden

that they'll be leading
in just one hour.

So we always speak about the fact
that the gardens and the house
was restored in the 1860s.

So it's a Victorian garden and
Italianate in style. Italianate.

There are certain elements of
the garden which is Edwardian.

So there's Victorian and Edwardian.

Cos basically people call it
like a mini version

of Queen Victoria's house
on the Isle of Wight.

So a miniature Queen Victoria's.

The tour is going to be
starting soon.

If you guys can start practising

It's remembering, like,

was when it was restored.

so there's pressure on the new
trainees to do a good job.

about different names of flowers,

on top of their facts

and keep punters entertained.

There's little bits of tarmac there,
so that was the original tarmac.

Yeah, so that tarmac
is hundreds of years old.

Brodsworth Hall was one of the first
places to have tarmac

actually in the gardens, yeah.

But when it comes to
the Latin names of the plants,

Rob's mixing his Marigolds
with his magnolias.

You'll notice on your left-hand
side we've got a lot of...

What are they called?
Hemerocallis. Hemerocallis.

We leave them in. Quite a lot of
places take them out for the winter
and store them in greenhouses.

Is that right? No. It's the
agapanthus that we do that with.
The agapanthus, sorry.

And Dan has to step in.

Obviously, you've got your peonies
and your mahonias.

And that then will eventually be
the planting and colour palette

that we use all way through
the gardens.

Obviously, these guys
were about to say that,

but I just jumped in before them!

Oh, my God. It's nerve-wracking.
But they're all listening

and they're all engaged
so we're doing all right.

Unable to remember the 72,000 plants
in the garden,

The reason that they've
got this fern section

is actually because of
the Victorian fern craze.

It sounds like a pretty
tasty craze actually.

It's not something I'd be
quite into, I don't think!

Apparently, the Victorians
loved a bit of fern!

something that's not your

back and asking questions. Exactly.

Whereas I've got to know
what I'm talking about here.

So, yeah, I love your passion for it
though. It does show. It's great.

on their feedback forms that counts.

There is a lot of heavy lifting,
heavy loads of work,

and you've got lots of tools
to kind of deal with.

You know, it is a very hard
labour job.

So I think for physical demand,
I'm actually going to score
him a nine on this one.

The planting was physically
demanding. You use lots of muscles
that you've never used before.

But I think the hardest physical
bit was trimming the hedges

because it really hurts
your shoulders.

I'm going to give physical demands
a ten.

It's been three days of hard graft
and assessing each other's work.

But now the scores
have been totted up.

And it's time to find out who
they think has the hardest job...

has so many hidden aspects,

including nerves,
pleasing the crowd,

there's a lot of buttons
and trying not to mess up.

The feeling... I have never had
that feeling before.

The adrenaline. I was shaking,
I was smiling.

You know, I didn't know, like,
how I felt.

I was just all over the place.

You get off the stage and you
feel amazing because you feel like
you've accomplished something.

A lot of it is about like
being nervous and entertaining.

When you get off the stage,
you do feel kind of relieved.

Now for the big one, the score.

Let's do it. I'm really nervous.

Wow. OK. Yeah. So 41.

That is really close,
but that is a fair score.

That's one point lower than Mica.

Now Dan can find out if Mica
and Rob found his job

as tricky as it seemed.

There are lots of tools
that need muscle

and a bit of elbow grease
to get the job done.

It's tiring.

Yeah, I think I'll definitely go
